Hi, this probably sounds like a dumb question but can I easily tell what region my ROM came from? What information do I look at to tell?
I'm asking because I bought an I9500 in a country where they sell the I9505 as the default - I know the device got imported but don't know exactly where it came from, hence I don't know the region. I know it's not my own country, but beyond that I don't know!
Thanks,
Ian

Not sure if this will work for you, or if it's what you require, but when I connected my phone to Kies and went to Firmware Upgrade, it told me what I had on it, what it can be updated too. At the end of the line of information, it gives you a code. Mine is TGY, which when i looked up on google, turns out to be Hong Kong. But i'm in the UK.
You can change your CSC though to match your country

Thanks for the info. Apparently my country code is Afghanistan. I know there is desert in the region where I live, but I didn't think it was that close!

Hi,
I'm thinking about getting a Galaxy Note. Unfortunately I'm in the U.S. So I'll have to get it from overseas. Even if I get it from a US seller, the phone is probably imported anyway. I'm planning to get it from Handtec. They have the EU version I believe.
Now if Samsung relases any OTA, does anyone know if I'll be able to get it here in the U.S.
Thanks.
As I understand, the Note doesn't need OTA's per se, as they're also downloadable directly into the phone through your WiFi using a piece of software called Kies, that is instaleld both in your phone and in your desktop.
I don't own one yet tough, so I'm just passing along forum information.
Funny you are asking that on XDA. Who cares? You can always come here and get it. Be much more concerned about the lack of warranty. The only thing holding me back from getting the Note

Correct me if I'm wrong but the Note comes with an international warranty... Well my Note did. I'm in the UK and bought it as an import from Germany. Confirmed the international warranty with the supplier too and it's definitely in force. Got a warranty book in the box to prove it.

the availability of OTA is dependent upon the region the phone originated from, not which country youre currently in.
ie. if you have the european note, it will only update when a european update is available, not when the US update is available. doesnt matter if youre in US or australia like me, cant update until they release a european update.

It doesn't matter where the warranty comes from, but if any Note user decides to:
a) root their device
b) install any custom rom/kernel
the warranty will be gone in most cases. The warranty will cover hardware or software malfunction but if you install not-stock stuff on your phone, then you can't complain if your service provider or repairshop won't do it for free.

Yes, but I believe his question was more about if an american carrier would broadcast a european OTA over their networks. They don't, but Kies take care of that.

I wasn't expecting the update to be broadcast from the carrier actually. I'm expecting Samsung to broadcast it directly. It sounds like I should be able to get the update, either through OTA or through Kies. It'd be nice to be able to update without requiring a desktop though.

carriers only broadcast updates to carrier locked phones iirc.
if you purchase an unlocked phone, it doesnt matter what carrier youre on. when you go to check for updates, it should be connecting to samsung's servers, not your carrier's.
Hi there guys,
I am not familiar with samsung products and i have a question since i'm thinking on buying one. I was talking to a guy that i have known from ebay. Guy has a S4 for sale. This is the short story.
The guy says he lost his S4 one day, and reported it so. Contract was finishing so he got a new S5. He ended up finding the S4. He says everything is ok with it, works just fine, but he can't make calls or receive texts with it because of the lock. Other than that, the phone is ok.
Here is the catch. Guy is from UK, i am not. He says he read somewhere that the phone is probably locked only in the UK reagion, and that i would be able to send text and make calls without problem in my country.
I've never heard or read anything about this. Am i being played for a fool or should i give it a shot?
Regards
Dial *#06#
If you see numbers of the imei the phone can be unlocked
But that means you cant use calls & sms at all
Unless you unlock the phone

He probably reported it stolen/missing so it's IMEI is banned from all networks. He has to contact police and provider to remove this lock.
S4 has "regionlock" yes but it's unlocked as soon as you put a "correct" SIM in it. For example if I buy a S4 here in SWE it will be locked to Nordic suppliers, sweden, Finland, Norway and so forth. So if I try a US simcard it won't work. But if I first put a Swedish or Finnish simcard the phone will then be able to use any simcard from any region.
Yep thats right

Yeah i saw some videos about the region lock on the Note 3. That isn't totally true, you would be able to use a US card on the phone but you need a code to be able to use it from what i've heard on the videos.
But i guess that's not the problem. So is there anyway to check if the IMEI is blocked? Can the IMEI be blocked only in the UK networks for example?

It may be vendor-locked of course, and then you need a code to make it universal.
The theft-lock should make it banned in any country and supplier.

Ok that was my doubt
Is there a website to check if the IMEI is blocked?
What a brilliant mess of terms, locks and understanding...
1. REGION lock: regions to which the Samsung phones/phablets (some only) are limited to are: NA (US, CAN, MEXICO), Asia, Russia, Europe etc, therefore: NO country specific; phone works with all sim cards form any country in the region. Furthermore, first use of appropriate card (for example: phone purchased originally in france would have EU lock, so using Greece or any other European country will be allowed) will unlock this feature, so in case of travel, the simcard from Russia or China can be used.
2. PROVIDER lock (simlock) - phone works with sim card from one provider only. Usually can be unlocked for small fee or free of charge (typically in europe when the contract is ending).
3. IMEI lock - phone is locked as the result of claim to be stolen, lost or damaged, if the replacement phone was given by insurance company or provider. can be legally removed by the legal authorities only.

NOPE. The problem is: If you'd buy the phone, and if the guy would claim it as stolen/missing - you'd be responsible.
The guy can go to insurer/police, return the new phone, claim that he found the old one and unlock it.... can you imagine that he'd do this?:laugh:

Eheh that would be a problem... if i wasn't making the deal through ebay and haven't had prof that the guy sold me the phone.
Either way, different countries, i wouldn't have that kind of problems because of a phone.
I just got the N9005. It was purchased from eBay, which I don't trust at all, so I want to check the authenticity of the product, which app is there is make sure the product I have is authentic/genuine? Other than app, any other things I shall check?
Also I am scared about this region lock thing. It's a N9005, unlocked version from Europe, and I am in India, so SIM card might not work, so is there any way around that, to get rid of the region lock?
Thanks in advance.
Try "Phone info" from play store
Download CPU-Z from store and see the specifications. Also download Antutu benchmark and run it. You should get a very high score.

Yes, as suggested, use CPU-Z, Antutu and Phone INFO ★Samsung★ app to check.
In 'Phone INFO ★Samsung★' app, open the Menu > 'Refurbishment Check'.
And test hardware functionality with the secret code *#0*#

Okay, thanks all, for recommending those apps. Now kindly check for the results. My idiot brain sees everything transparent here, but maybe something else is there (It's like I am trying to prove it a fake, LOL)
The screenshots are attached, kindly have a look at them. If there is any other thing I should check kindly say that too.
@a_prabhu7: Judging by the screenshots I think that the phone is absolutely original. But let the others confirm first mate.
It's genuine.

For more check you may need to show the plate (sticker) on the back of the phone, behind the battery.
And also check if the IMEI and S/N on that sticker match with those in Phone INFO app. And scan the bar code and make sure it match with the IMEI.

For those of you who bought an UNLOCKED, NON-CONTRACT S7 Edge from Best Buy, could you tell me which CSC/home country it is?
You could either (1) on the dialer, press *#1234# -- no need to press the green icon -- and wait for a black screen that shows the CSC version. But, this may do nothing on your phone, so you have to, (2) Install "Phone Info" by vndnguyen and it will show the active the CSC Code.
(Reason for asking but not really the topic for discussion: I'm curious which one(s) Best Buy is selling. It would be nice if Samsung USA expands the distribution channel outside the carriers and eventually releases an unbranded USA CSC with built-in support for US carrier features)

Sure did! Last night. I would recommend if you do get it - update the firmware with Samsung Side Sync. Kept failing when I tried to do it through the phone.

Hi Guys.
Can someone explain what the Available Csc codes section is and if it means anything with mine being blank ?
Update just in case this question pops up for another person.
Another owners phone purchased from the same outlet reports its the same on his phone.
Samsung U.K. confirm it's nothing to be concerned over.

Mine is XEU (purchased from Carphone Warehouse) and Available CSC Codes shows multiple.
Mines from the Samsung Experience Stores also owned by Cpw (well until 1/3/17 when Samsung take them over)
Was your supplied with contract via Cpw or sim free.

Come to think of it, mine is actually an exchange from my Insurance (original phone was from Carphone Warehouse, forgot I had it changed).
That could well explain the difference then.
