[Q] S4 - Contacts - Last Name First - How? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello All
I just bought a new stock S4 and syned my contacts with Google. Unfortunately the Contacts List displays First name first but I want to display Last Name First. I've searched the Forum on this issue with no luck and I've tried looking at every setting I can on the device and also no luck. My old S3 and Jelly Bean 4.2.1 allowed this option.
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers Kym

Thanks for the quick reply Dean but when I go to Settings the only 4 options are "Contacts with Phones", "Service numbers", "Contact Sharing Settings" and "Online Search". Definitely nothing about Family Names First.
What you have described is on Jelly Bean 4.1.2 and is on my old S3 but not on the S4 running 4.2.2.
Thanks anyway.
Cheers Kym

This is on my S4 running on MDM 4.2.2.

Thanks again Dean.
Below is a photo of my Settings screen for "Contacts". It is different to yours. It might be because I purchased my from the Net from Hong Kong. When I got it I had to change the language over from Chinese to English.
Again thanks very much for your time.

Mine has only three settings - "Only contacts with phone", "Service numbers" and "Contact sharing settings". I wonder whether this is caused by changing the language setting from Chinese to English or a bug in the firmware.
Anyway, I my contacts list is stuck at first name first and I can't change to last name first and this irritates me. Any solutions?

Z1, same thing

I'm running Sony Z1, but I have the same problem and same screen as you. Running 4.2.2.

Hi, since I had the same problem and my recollection was I could fix it before but forgot how. It took me a half day and finally it came back to me by keep looking at a Chinese forum. It mentioned about how to add a T9 search feature on the S4 based on Chinese spelling.
Here is how to solve the problem:
First you need to root the phone.
Install an app called Root Explorer (because you need to edit a file)
Then
Use Root Explorer go to system/csc -> feature.xml or others.xml
Change >TRUE< to >FALSE< of following line:
<CscFeature_Contact_DisableMenuNameOrder>true</CscFeature_Contact_DisableMenuNameOrder>
Reboot the machine, and you will see the option let you select to display order for Last Name or First Name.

Thanks for the reply

Thanks for the reply but in the end I returned the unit and bought one that had the Last Name First and First Name last in the Contacts.

Quickmark showing boxes instead of words

Am using the Dopot CT9000 with the English ROM and there is this program called Quickmark which I think is a name card scanning software. The thing is, all the instructions in the program are in boxes and not in English. Is there any way around this?
Does TyTN have this program?
Tell me pls the following:
1. Which language -exactly- have you installed on your device?
2. What filenames have the two files Quickmark.xxxx.dll (whereas xxxx stands for the landcode as defined by Microsoft).
Check this and post it here. Then there will be a solution for you.
The QR Codes are really cool!

Thank you so much for your help.
1. I presume the language is english as everything else in my CT9000 is in English and all. The keyboard has some chinese strokes but that's the only thing chinese about it. My software version are as follows:
ROM: 1.23.707.1
ROM date: 06/28/06
Radio: 1.06.00.10
Protocol: 32.37.7010.01H
Is there any other information you need to know?
2. The 2 files you were talking about are as follows:
Quickmark.0409.dll
Quickmark.0804.dll
Would appreciate any help I can get on this.
Thank you.

QuickMark.0409.dll contains the english text.
QuickMark.0809.dll contains the chinese text.
So, delete QuickMark.0809.dll and either rename or copy QuickMark.0409.dll to QuickMark.0809.dll, so the program will always find the dll with the english text.

Hello,
well Chinese isn’t Chines as is with German and German (or English and English) in the sense of localization as defined by Microsoft !
Just have a look at this most valuable “List of Locale IDs” published by Microsoft:
http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/reference/winxp/xp-lcid.mspx
I had the same problem as you when I first started Quickmark and was even puzzled for a moment when I had restarted it again, having changed the locale ID to German.
All menue items kept showing up as little boxes – which is what one usually sees when there is a problem with the localization.
Resolution was that there is a special modified Locale ID for Austria !
(Here in Austria German is the official language, but there is a Local ID for German (Austria), which is 0c07 and for German (Standard = Germany), which is 0407.)
When I changed the English language file to Quickmark.0c07.dll (instead of the previously tried Quickmark.0407.dll) the English menue showed up again !
As you mentioned that on your keyboard you can see some Chinese keys I’d suppose your device isn’t a US-English version.
Also I’d assume from the flag you are using next to your nick that your native tongue isn’t English either, correct ?
What you should do:
Go to Settings | Language (or Localization or whatever it be called on your device) and check, which language you have set there.
Then look up the Locale ID for this language setting in the table (see link above).
Replace the Locale ID in the filename of the English language dll.
Reboot !!!
Now you should see the English menue instead of the boxes.
I don’t know anyone where this procedure hasn’t resolved this problem !

Yeaaaah !!!
The QR Codes are a really cool application.
Actually in my opinion the coolest "fun" application I can think of.
(I am no gamer, so those games do not really phascinate me.)
However on a MS Smartphone (I have the Qtek 8300) and Nokia phones (tried it out on my 6680, whose camera is quite good) this application even works better:
You just have to point your phone onto a QR Code (can even be done rather fast and unprecise) and the action is triggered automatically - WITHOUT having to press a button, as on the TyTN !!!!!
This is a BIG advantage, because when pressing a button you move the device a tiny little bit.
And as the camera resolution of these phone devices aren't too high, this might be enough for not being able to decode the QR.
Actually I have no idea why Quickmark has decided to add this "Press a Button" requirement on the TyTN.
(Maybe they just ported the code and the automatic trigger mechanism is different on the Hermes platform.)
Anyway Quickmark should optimize this for the TyTN !!!!!
What do you think ? (Question to the audience.)

I have not run into any Korean language related developers on this xda forums yet.
I was able to install and run Korean language with help from some of Korean HD2 users group forum,
but that was when I had Touch Pro 2 phone.
Now, I bought HD2 last week and have been trying to Koreanized(한글화) my HD2 with no success.
NO, I take it back. I was 75% successful on HD2 compares to Touch Pro 2.
I was using HD2 method on The Touch Pro 2 and got 99% working.
Only a few menu items are not in Korean and input method was excellent in both Korean and English.
I've posted results of Touch Pro 2 on this link. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=644091
Now, with my new HD2, most of bottom menus are unreadable (small squares) and input methods locks up in Korean and can't type English.
I've posted problems and only recomendations so far is to soft reset up to 3 times. I have soft reset many times. Still NO GO.
PHP:
This is one of Korean HD2 forum.http://www.mymits.net/zboard/zboard....page=2&no=5757
Perhaps, You'll have a better luck. (Good Luck )
Please post with any results you'll get. It would be greatly useful to everyone whom seeks for Koreanized (is this a word? )
How to install Korean language on HD2
Hi All,
I was gonna edit prior post, then it may get messy so here is another post.
I've tried installing Korean language on my HD2 for couple of days and finally made it happen. WooHoo
I was having troubles because I tried staying with roms I liked. Then I finally gave up and installed "Lost in Asia" rom.
The Lost in Asia rom is already multi-language (Eng. and Chinese). Therefore (I believe) it had necessary files to accept Korean installation.
After the installation of rom Lost in Asia, I've installed 1 to 6 of MyMits Korean installation steps then I've installed Moa key cab and WALA. All main menus are changed to Korean.
Let me see if I can help you guys out...I'm Korean myself and had been trying to install Korean language support on my hd2 t-mo US for awhile now. Now...I'm not sure exactly what you wanted...the ability to read Korean font and text in Korean font? Or...like the previous poster, are you trying to change the entire UI (menu's, etc) on your hd2 to complete Korean?
If that's the case you will probably have to install the lost in asia rom...I'm almost positive with other rom versions or stock US rom's it's just not possible, but don't quote me on that.
If you want the ability to read Korean font and message (type in Korean) go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=646728
Follow those steps...download and install the Korean font .cab => than install the moakey .cab
Than go into start menu -> settings -> personal -> input settings and change it to moakey. You can change the settings on moakey to your tastes as well.
Don't forget you can hold down the keyboard icon when typing to open up the message options screen and you can switch back and forth between the different message input methods on the fly.
I'm personally using the newest version of Energyrom April 1st, hspl2, T-Mo US w/ no issues.
One other thing to note, you can definitely read Korean fonts now...but when you put mp3's etc into media player or core player (whatever you use) alot of the Korean titles won't display properly...it's not because the K-language support isn't working, it's just that those programs need separate K-language support.
Hope this helps =_) 좋은 하루~!!
thnks all!!!!

This AWESOME! Its seems to be working flawlessly on my Nexus One on CM7 nightly rom. Will update more observations soon. God bless you for this.
Aside : I wish others with programming skills would make such amazingly meaningful apps instead of eye candy themes. I hope I learn android programming soon.
Can I see your permissions from your manifest file? LOL
why you need that ?.... anyway... here is list of permission:
android.permission.GET_ACCOUNTS
android.permission.READ_CONTACTS
android.permission.WRITE_CONTACTS
android.permission.READ_SMS

I think you have installed earlier version and now you are trying to install it without un-installing it.
try this:
adb install -r aha_signed.apk
if it doesn't work then un-install it manually and then try...
Good luck
sorry, that didn't mention that
it is first install
have tried the reinstall option too

Hey, another request.
Am using this on Nexus One with a CM7 Nightly Tom.
Currently you need to scroll to select the contact you wish to send.
I use the search key, it pops up, but it does not register any entries and therefore cannot find the specific contact.
Can you please include a search option?
Thanks.

There is very easy work around for this.
Open Contacts App -> search contract -> menu -> share -> select "Share Contact" app -> You get the contact in "Share contacts" Application
Please let me know if it works for you

[GUIDE] How to "add" 5 more languages to XX based stock roms

So,
It seems like Samsung has introduced a new way for supporting languages on the Galaxy S3.
If you go inside the language settings you will see a nice bunch of languages.
But! Those are not all the available languages on the phone!
There are 5(!) more languages you can "unlock" in 2 ways.
The languages are:
Arabic (ar)
Farsi (fa)
Hebrew (iw)
Japanese (ja)
Thai (th)
Vietnamese (vi)
Chinese (zh)
The easy way to enable them is to download the application "morelocale2" and add to choose or add the language code you want.
With this method you will not see these languages in your language settings.
To enable these languages in the language setting of your phone, you will need to root it.
you can use Chainfires method here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1660918
The next step is to use root explorer or any other familiar application and go into /system/csc.
There is a file there named languages.xml.
If you open the file you will see a list of languages to display.
Just add your desired language code from the list above (in 2 places in the file) + country code, reboot, and then you will see that language in your language setting!
good luck!
Another way, you can flash XXLEF to enable some hidden languages. Change modem will change your languages support
It's not the modem, it's the CSC file

Ah ok! I forgot that I flashed ZS firmware
Well..i used the "morelocale2" method and i found them added in the "language settings" rebooted and they are still there, my rom is XXALE9
Back in the days of i9000 and Froyo, my country was only having Froyo 2.2 while many other countries were already having 2.2.1. What I did was decompiling all the 2.2 system apps, and implanting the languages into the 2.2.1, and thereby creating a genuine feeling of having a 2.2.1 rom with my area locale. Though not 100% fit, but at least it was better than using the Morelocale app.
Refer to this link for the details of how to do it.
Though we are talking about different phones and different Android system since then, but I believe the methodology is the same.
But there is no need to do that here, as the xml files are already inside the rom, just not enabled.
I gave the instruction on how to enable them

Yes, but how did you edit the Read Only language.xml file? That is the problem. I can edit it, but I can't save it.

You have to go to settings in ES Explorer and scroll down to root settings and also check "Mount File System". I was able to save the file after adding the codes for Chinese, but after I rebooted the phone, there still was no option for Chinese.

you can use this app Wanam just made:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1925831
thanks but i don't want to use an app for this.
i've already edited the language file so i do have my language as a display language.
i still don't have it as an input language in Samsung's default keyboard. there is a way to enable it?
I tried to added the languages to the CSC file and also tried the applications .. but nothing worked for me..
I have Sprint Samsung S3 FreeGS3 Rom (Stock rooted)
Of course my version of the GS3 phone is SPH-L170 but I don't see why that would be a problem?
Is there anyway to enable Arabic in the languages tap and the keyboard?
I use hackers keyboard and that works fine with Arabic but I want the stock one to have it as well.
Thank.
Still waiting for someone to help..
Use the morelocale2 app but it only changed the language in a couple of apps that's about it.

[YotaPhone2] YotaMirrorCFG 2.1.0 update

Update 2.1.0 2016-3-16
1.Optimized Manage UI.
2.Optimized for other versions Lollipop besides RU1.99.
3.Modified for the issue of "read fail".
4.Optimized for config redundancy.
5.Added the language recognition.
6.Fix ROM 4.4 support.
Introduction
What is it?
YotaMirrorCFG is my stab at developing something useful for the Yotaphone 2. It's a configure tool for YotaMirror, which controls the mode each app mirroring on the back screen. It is specified and has been tested on the latest firmware (1.99 RU).
What it does?
- The configure tool allows you to change and manage mirroring mode for each app.
- The configure tool provides full-refresh mode for mirroring , also could change the dithering mode, waveform mode etc...
Installation instructions
I'm not going to bother putting this on Google Play because of the extra work with little benefit, so you have to install the apk manually. Here's how:
1. Check "allow installation of apps from unkown sources" from Settings - Security so that you can install the file.
2. Download the apk file and put it on your phone, or download it to your phone directly.
3. Open the apk file with some file manager and install it.
After this you can manage the mirroring mode for each app in it, just following the instructions.
Download
Download here (2.0.0)
Known issues
- This Widget requires Lollipop to work. No backwards compatibility.
- Changing the parameters in YotaMirrorCFG may cause unpredicted issues. Please set to default if you got mirroring issues on your yotaphone.
FAQ
The graphics without aesthetic ...
- If someone wants to create new graphics for the app, I am very willing to change them.
What are all these permissions?
- The MOUNT_UNMOUNT_FILESYSTEMS permission.
- The TWRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission.
- The ACCESS_BACKSCREEN permission.

Hi, what problem did you meet? Reading failure or setting issue?
Could you take a screenshot of Yotaphone info and version, that would be helpful for me. Thanx.
And I update the version to 2.0.0, hope that would be useful for you.
thank you for the update
now the app is in English for me, good (I'm on the latest RU build)
- when I click "MIRRORMANAGER" I get a force close.
- in the 'modify mirror cfg' I see 2 'ONE KEY BACK TO DEFAULT' buttons.
Also it would be good if you sort the app list selection by A-Z
thanks for the work
This is Genial application! Thank you so much for your effort! It works and I'm testing the possibilities.
Can you explain all the menus and buttons a little bit more? What are they for? Also I didn't get why not all of my applications are shown in the list? For example I can not find Google books there but it is installed in my yotaphone 2.
What is A2? What is other options?
App enquiry
Will this app enable me to change the frequency of the flashing (full screen refresh) on the epd screen? I am desperately looking for this function, regards.

that is not true, it doesnt actually allow me to change the update mode for the functioning of the back screen, just individual apps

Thanks for the app but I'm not sure what the different settings mean. I see the local refresh option but presumably that is to minimise flashing? I'm after the opposite - to force a full refresh on the home screen - I'm using Apex Launcher and getting a lot of ghosting after opening and closing menus/app drawer/folders.
I'd like to force Apex to do a full refresh - is that possible with this app, and if so, which settings should I use?
(Sorry for my ignorance.)
For Waveform: Google "yotaphone waveform". You should find a link to mwiki yotaphone com

Hello, is there any way to use this great application to set the setting of yotareader, because the reader apply some sort of "anti-aliasing" to the font to make it looks fine but i prefect sharper renderer (even if the font is aliased)
Thanks for your works
I can't get it works even on listed app.
Maybe it's not compatible with 1.1.124b ?
Thanks
Hi, is the source for this available somewhere?
i've tried to mp the devel but got no answer, maybe you'll have more luck
I'm on the last version of RU firmware and can not install Yota mirror - my phone says that file format was not recognized... any ideas?
Apologize for the late reply,I'm not playing Yotaphone since then.
For you guys questions, please see below suggestions.
[If you want to know about the meaning of each mode/prameter in settings...]
Refer to http://mwiki.yotaphone.com/wiki/Waveforms
The official document will give u a detailed introduction for the mode/prameter in YotaMirrorCFG. Please spend some time to read it if you really want to play it. Otherwise you can just tick in page 'Mirror Manager' in App.
[If you encounter a issue indicating format error of missing files...]
Please go to the directory /sdcard/TitaniumManger in your phone, and delete mirroring.cfg. Try the app again.
Ps. If no directory /sdcard/TitaniumManger found, please establish one yourself.
Contact me by twitter, [email protected].(As in China, it's quite difficult to get over the network wall. So sorry if you got no response from me.)
