So this should be a no brainer right? but Im freaking stumped... I just got my S4 on thursday last week and already have used almost a gig of data... I checked and a couple things that make me wonder what is going on are that "remove Apps" has used 250M of data in the background, and "Android OS" has used about 300m.
How can I find out what in the OS is using my data? I really dont want to go over my limit and at this rate I probably will... Im on a 3 gig plan, but am thinking maybe I should bump it up to 5...
Have you been installing/uninstalling apps on your new phone? maybe that's the reason?
I usually do these operations while home on wifi.
Give it another day of NORMAL activity to see how it behaves. And no rush to upgrade to 5 GB if you are on AT&T, they charge you only extra $10 (I believe, not 100% sure) for each additional GB of data.
Also, this Q belongs in QA

Use root explorer and see what is taken all the space.
this is related. If you are using the new Google streaming music service... WATCH YOUR DATA!
I skyrocketed over 2GB after just one day back and fourth to work. It obviously streams at a much higher data rate than Pandora, and you should take care to download most of your music on Wifi and keep it on the device, so just be aware of the data usage.

Try Data Manager app.. does what you need
Well Im not streaming music, so that isnt it. Heck I froze all but the "Music" app, so play music and the like arent even running.
Im not concerned with data storage, so root explorer wont help me.
and yep, this question was such a no brainer, i posted in teh wrong darn section.... Oops.
Im wondering what in android OS would have chewed through that much data? I think I figured out the remove apps using high data, I had downloaded Speed Test and ran it quite a few times, used250M of data with it. once I deleted it it is nolonger in the list of apps to show its data usage, but the phone has to account for that data usage so it lumps it under remove apps.
I nowmally do all my downloading and is=nstalling of apps at home over wifi, which is part of why I was wondering about this....
Gonna download and check that app out now.
Thanks for teh responses!

I've searched the Market but I can't find something that can do this.
I'm using 3g Watchdog to track overall data usage, but I want to be able to see how much data each app is using, so I can decide whether to keep it or not.
With o2 introducing it's 500mb limits in October I need to get on top of my current 1gb a month data usage. I know I can pay the extra fiver to get another 500mb on top, but if I can ditch some of my biggest data scoffing apps that'd be preferable.
I guess that's a no then.
If you install spare parts you can track each app split into network usage.
Spare parts is installed but I can't see where to do that.
**Edit. Check that. Must have been an older version that came with the Rom. Thanks for the pointer. Now what the heck is this "Media" that's been draining my data?
Theres an app called "Trafficstats" which will do this for you

be careful I am 90% certain this caused massive battery drain on my phone, my advice would be use it for a few hours then remove.
I'll check it out.
would it be possible to boot chromium os instead of ubuntu, i know it may sounds silly because why would you want to use chromium? but i think it would be pretty interesting to see how fast it boots on a mobile device and also if you wanted to browse the net fast and have quick startup times then it would be the way to go
I was actually just browsing on some chrome os info and was wondering the same thing. if we can boon linux... can we possibly boot chromium ?
Isnt it a fully online OS? What for ppl without dataplan?
lol, screw people without a data plan. I see no reason to ever get a smartphone, that has all these many features, and never get a data plan.
seriously, what is the point? you cant use any features unless you are connected to wifi. not everywhere is there wifi. and if there is, most of the time its not an open network, and if it is an open network, i hope that there is someone there packet sniffing and catching your info for being cheap and not getting a data plan.
bottom line, get a data plan. t-mobile has an unlimited plan as do most others. i've used 10 gigs in a month and no cut off, so that is plenty for ANYONE.
stop buying bottled water and drink tap, and you can afford the data plan.
i apologize for the rant.
Lol you don't know what you are talking about. Over here it costs me 20 euro extra per month so please stfu. And next time be nicer.. not all countries offer 3g almost for free!

i have to kinda agree with the data plan post, altho it wasnt nicely put he is kinda ryt, but also i agree with you, not everyone can afford the extra money and not evrywhere in the world has brillian 3g coverage but tbh if u dont hav a data plan then u dotn install chrome os simple as, and even if u did get it and dont have a data plan its not lik its a rom, leave it on your sd card then boot when your around wifi? i just thought itd b a nice idea to have a web browsing device that boots almost instantly, well atleast hopefully it wud. i know yeh im gna get comments lik "we do have web browsing devices just use the built in browser on android" or "use the hd2 winmo browser" but its just a question and an idea.
if anyone who reads this is interested and maybe wants to giv it a go at making chrome work on the hd2 then there are already some precompiled builds called chrome flow, search for it on google unless u alredi know what im talking about.
Ive been reading about the possibilities of rooting and why its a good thing.
Well I finally rooted, but what should I do now?
I've already removed the bloatware and im not interested in themes.
As for ROMS/CustomOS, there hasnt been any ROM that sets it that much more better then the stock 2.2firmware that came with the phone. Aside from the possible swipe texting, is there any significant benefit from using a custom ROM as oppose to the standard OS?
Also what are some must have apps for rooted phone?
Feels like the only real benefit from rooting (if one is not interested in themes/looks) is just removing bloatware
Same boat
So I just rooted my phone too, I was hoping to gain the ability to remove the bloat ware and maybe free mobile hot spot, but im such a noon im too worried about bricking my phone so really all I've done is the initial root, I did download the liberty 1.5 and saved it to my memory card but I don't really know if I did a full backup or not. I downloaded the titanium backup app that specifically says root on it and did what I thought was a backup in preparation for putting the liberty rom on my phone. Do I automatically gwet free mobile hotspot or is that a separate app all together?

Im not sure about titaninum backup or the liberty 1.5 youre trying to install.
However, I can hopefully share with you what I know about the free mobile hotspot. If by that you mean tether, than yes, you do need a seperate app. In fact the app is the only thing you need, no need for roms and what not. Some of the tethe rapps are PDAnet, easytether, and wireless tehter
theres probably more but those 3 are the ones I see most mentioned and hear success stories with most of them
alot of the Roms out there include a wireless 3g hotspot app in them, for example the rom im rocking is Darkslide 4.2 and it includes the app, and always remember to give credit where credit is due ^_^ and always thank the devs for doing this for free
Oh for sure, I appreciate the help info ethus site is the bomb and the dev's here kick butt. So I was using pda net before I rooted but I was told by someone that you can get the wireless hot spot by rooting. I might check out that dark sliders rom too. Is it a lot of work tojump between roms?
Just remember than Verizon is now monitoring rooted phones and they can send you a bill for data. I would suggest against it but it depends on where you live as to if they are monitoring.

How do they even know that a phone is rooted? Im guess I don't know what to think of that.. I know its a service you are supposed to pay for but isn't that kinda along the same lines as apple or google monitoring you? Do we know what markets Verizon is monitoring? Is it something where they pick the people who are using gig's of data, I've only used maybe a couple hundred megabytes

I need more ram for the phone because it is sooooo slow I only have just 4 apps aside frim the original apps
Sent from my SPH-M910 using xda app-developers app
Unfortunately there is no way to get more RAM for your phone, as it is a piece of the phone's hardware. I have this phone as well, and yes, it is very slow. All you can do is try to make sure you have as few apps running in the background as possible.

The intercept is a piece of trash. I cant believe people still have this phone. The intercept was my first smartphone. I hated it! But that was 3 + years ago. I have a Nexus 4 now.
I had the transform. The sexier version, try a different ROM/kernel. Mine got to an acceptabal speed with my personal ROM. I took out a lot of stuff, kept data and WiFi off. It was usable. Didn't play any games and I never did anything crazy.

Yep, might tight behind, has kept it. I pay less than half of any other plan in my area, so, for now, i will keep it, and smile every month when i have to pay the bill !!!!!!
In short, I would recommend the App " Link2SD". partition your SD card with and Extension. In Recovery, format system to the same as your Extension. Boot. Run the app.
In short, this takes your apps, only placeing a fragemnt in th esytem, as to where it can find the App, and Places them on the SD card Extension, even Widgets, but it tricks the system, into thinking it has more space than it does. Widgets, they still work as they should, if they were in the phone it self, as a posed to just putting them onto the SD card, cause ya know they won't work that way.
FYI > get Titanium Back Up app, keep it on the SD card. move everything through Links2SD, and you should be fine. If something happens to you card, you really cant get the info back out of the extention...just an FYI.......LMAO
Hey all. Recently switched to T-Mobile and got the G2. I immediately rooted it to customize things how I wanted them. Everything I have been doing has been with WiFi enabled. I never turn it off, honestly. In just about 10 days, I hit my 3 gig data cap, and have no idea how. I was rooted, and thought my Rom could be part of the reason, so I KDZ flashed back to stock. Now all my data usage is wiped, but obviously still at data cap. Is there anyway I could take it into the store? It's going to look really bad on my end when I tell them I factory reset my phone because I hit data cap, but it just doesn't make sense. I never came anywhere close to 3 gigs of data on Verizon, and that was a whole months use with not much WiFi involved. A bit irritated right now.... any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
There is a separate data usage tab for WiFi & mobile data. Are you sure you were on the right one?

Yeah, I got the text from tmobile letting me know I'd be throttled...
I had this happen to me a few months back when I was on a T-mobile stock rom... if you have a custom recovery installed and aren't on the latest OTA update it will download the update, fail file verification and re-download the file... I blew through 2gb in one afternoon.
Here is the link to the post and the solution if this is your issue.

I was on slimkat with twrp, so doubt it was the issue. It's quite possible though, so thank you for the link. I'm pretty sure that going into the tmobile store would be a waste of my time...

They won't help you or restore your data speed, you can upgrade to a higher limit if that's an option for you. Your limit can be filled a little easy if you use social media sites, G+ uses about 1gbs/month for me.
