Widgets keep flashing / refreshing when re-entering scree - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The issue; any time i return to the home screen, either from closing an app or unlocking the phone I am see widgets disappear and reappear Or refresh. It causes a brief lag on the phone and is annoying.
What changed: started day of the big io conference. 2 things happened that day, I side loaded the hangouts app and play services. I also got many app updates from the conference including SwiftKey.
My one friend has the same exact issue at the same time, ideas?

as an experiment, uninstall the hangouts app. i bet that is the cause. you arent the only one that has mentioned that behavior starting at that time.

Bugs? Empty Market & Application Manager + CNN Widget Slowdown

A couple of things happened last night. Anyone else experience these?
I went into the market and was presented with a grid of 16 apps, and that's it. I can click on the apps and install them, but searching revealed no more apps nor could I get to the main app market home page or menu.
I attempted to close the market app under settings, applications, manage applications, running services.
The problem? It was empty too. So was the list of installed applications. According to Android, I had nothing installed.
Rebooting fixed this issue, but I don't know what caused it.
Second interesting thing. One of the first apps I installed was the CNN app with the widget. I thought it was a pretty neat widget to have on the home screen. Over the next few days I noticed lag. Keyboard lag, browser lag, app drawer, etc. Just about everywhere. Last night I removed the CNN widget and guess what, lag vanished. I don't know if it's the widget or just a coincidence but thought I would share.

I have had some weirdness with the CNN widget. For no apparent reason, it would disappear from my screen but would really still be there, just invisible because I could not add another widget in that spot. Rebooting corrected it the few times it has happened. I noticed they released an update today (or yesterday) so I installed it and hopefully that will take care of it.
Same problem here. I even tried to remove the invisible CNN widget but couldn't. Restarting the Xoom seems to fix it but hate to keep doing that all the time it disappears on me. Needs to be fixed soon

I cannot click "Allow" when the permissions pop-up comes up.

So this has been happen to me lately and I have no idea why. I just tried loading Focus for the first time and it asked for permission and when I try and click on allow, nothing happens but Deny works.
This happened with something else a week or two ago and I just tossed it up as an anomaly. Now that it happened with Focus it's definitely a problem.
I don't have any app like lux running, which used to cause a problem like this in the past.
I am completely stock, unrooted and on latest OS.
Do you happen to have the app Lux installed? If so, temporarily disable it.
I have exactly the same issue on my 6P. Several different applications and the same behaviour - deny works fine but allow doesn't do anything (seems like it can't even 'click'). I do not have any app called Lux installed.

WIth a bit of searching on Google forums I found that this issue seems to be related to a specific application using the 'draw over other apps' permission (you can check witch apps have this in the Apps Settings on the device) since the June 2016 updates. Apparently the updates included some anti-tapjacking changes which has resulted in some apps having issues. The culprit on my (and other posters on the forum) device was FileManager. Either uninstalling the app, or just removing the 'draw over' permission, resolves the issue immediately.

Yup, I also found that out by doing a Google search last night. I don't have Lux installed either.
Another work around is to go to settings, apps, then go into app that needs permissions and change the, here.

Google now cards issue

About a week ago, I started having issues with the Now Cards (or feeds or whatever Google calls them now) showing up on the Google Now screen when I swipe over. My google search screen (on left) showed no cards even after 24 hours had passed, but in the notification dropdown, it showed a weather notification and showed some number of cards at the bottom right. I could click on the notification and it took me to the Google Now search, which had NO cards. I reset the Google Search settings, history, and the Google app. It worked...for about 2 hours. Now back to notifications showing 21 Cards under the Weather but nothing in the Google now search screen.
Since I was wanting to go ahead and unlock my bootloader and root, I reset the phone, rooted it, and all the other fun stuff. Google Now Cards...still the same problem. Even took the same steps outlined above. I get a few hours where it works, then nothing.
So my question is this: Cards/Feeds seems to be on because I am getting notifications, but clicking on it takes me to a blank Google search screen. How do I make the cards under notifications show on the Google Now search? Or am I missing something else? Did Google just decide to break their own stuff during their EOL for Google Now launcher?
Mine has been doing this occasionally as well, I am using the Google App beta, so I thought it may be due to that. Are you using the stable release?
Tapping the search bar within the Google App (where the cards/feed should be) fixes this issue for me, until the next time it occurs, usually a day or so later.
I'm using stable. My cards have come back again but for how long is unknown. I guess Google is messing things up in the updates because it started happening right after the latest update.
Card went away again. Quite frustrating. I'm using Google now launcher so I will try to switch.

I'm using Nova, same issue. Just tapping the search bar from within the Google app brings my cards back.
Tapping the search bar on Nova didn't help until I reset the Google search, then quit working again (yes I get a decent number of feeds do to weather, online orders, etc). I actually liked the now launcher and swiping over as I actually find the cards useful. I like Nova well enough so with now cards being intermittent at best, I might as well turn off the feeds to save battery if they aren't reliable for now and switch over to Nova so I can utilize screen real estate to the left of home.

Tapping the search bar from within the Google app fixes mine, not on the launcher home screen. So with GNL, swipe to Google Now, tap search, fixed. Nova: open Google app, tap search. On my device this works anyway.

Didn't work on mine. I'll keep trying some various things over the next few days to see what comes of it. Hopefully it is just a bug that Google will release an update to fix.
I had same issue, I solved that issue doing the following:
go to settings => application => app google => empty cache and data
Kind of factory reset for google search app.
Just need to re enable google now after that and cards are back.
Seems not be device related but google search update released 17/02/2017 see the comment on the play store.

After reading through the reviews on the play store, it is looking like an update issue by Google. Using the Google now launcher pretty much leaves the cards useless for me. If I use another launcher, the Google search app will work with the new tab thing they have going on.
Hi all,
I am with Google Now Launcher. I have the same issue with the google now cards. Can't seem to make them appear on will. They come and go whenever Tried force close on Google app, cleaning cache and so on. Opening the app from the app drawer make no difference. Interestingly when I switch to Pixel Launcher and tap the google logo on the top left on the home screen and then tap the google logo from the search bar all the cards are there but when I go back to GNL the cards are missing
So I guess something is messed with Google app/Google Now Launcher relation.

Thanks for confirming this. I wonder if Google is just giving up completely on the Google now launcher since they are removing it from the play store. It bites if they are especially considering the are a fair number of people who use it.

My thoughts exactly
I have also been having this issue. Blank Google Now feed and using the Google Now Launching, which is stock. My MXPE is virgin stock since day 1. I have even factory rest and the issue still came back a couple of days later.
This all started about a month ago for me too.

Thanks. It is obvious from reviews and he that Google screwed it up with an update... About the time they added tabbed feeds. What a crappy way to drop support if that is their end game.
My cards are functioning fine..Haven't noticed any change or missing cards.

Yeah, I started having problems after a Google App update.
When we get Google notifications, for things like time to leave for an appointment. It goes to Google Now when the notification is pressed and there's a blank screen.
If Google were to end support, it would leave us with dibiltated devices.

Maybe the ROM you're using still uses an older version of the Google app, before the issues started?

The cards work fine if using another launcher like Nova and you enter the Google app. In fact the Google search app when entered via another launcher will show the tabbed feeds that the latest update boasts about.
It is specifically the Google Now Launcher with the swipe to left function which seems to have the feeds broken. The tabbed feeds will not show up in the Google app under Google Now. If you press the colorful G icon, in all apps or the persistent search bar, it does not launch into the Google app, but rather takes you to the left of the homescreen, which is the part that is broken.
Since Google plans to remove the Google Now Launcher from the app store, I fear they may have dropped support for it and will not fix the feeds issue. I hope Google's announcement to bring Google Assistant this week to MM and N will fix this problem... Or give us the Pixel Launcher (I know I'm dreaming but I can hope).
Thank you, you're right. I prefer Arrow Launcher as a fallback and now the cards work again.
And I agree, Google probably will not fix the Now Launcher. We will see how they plan to roll out Google Assistant.
New Google App Update fixes Google Now Launcher, but Nova no longer works the same
There's a new Google App update out. Maybe preparing us for Google Assistant .
It fixes the Google Now Launcher. But now, when clicking "Google" in the search bar on Nova Launcher, instead of Google Now cards opening, it's just a search and nothing more.
After using the Arrow launcher for a bit, I moved to Nova.
I'll stick with Nova for now and added a desktop icon to open Google when I need Google Now cards.

Google Assistant

Has anyone gotten the Play Services update that enables google assistant? Google says they started the rollout and US will get it first but I still don't have it.
Yes. I needed to factory reset my phone because the play services kept crashing. Hold off.

A few days after I factory reset my phone, I got a new google a new play services update today.
Holy crap this thing is cool! Wait for it to come to your phone because it's worth out!
It is supposedly a server side change. In theory the parts needed have been out in the field for a bit. Just have to wait until Goog decides it is your turn to have it turned on your account. To this day, how they decide who gets what when is a complete mystery. (I've been an Android user since the T-Mo G1 came out and have never been day one or week one of anything, even being on beta channels for various products.)

It just happens. Lol! Out of no where I decide to long press and it appears. My only question for you is after you set it up, when you long press home again, does Google pop up or does assistant pop up when you're at your home screen? For me at home screen, Google now pops up, but when I long press it again, assistant pops up. Only time assistant works is if I'm in an app or browsing. Weird
I got Google Assistant on my LG V20 a few hours ago; still learning it. Its pretty dope....
I think it would be helpful if people that get it list their carrier and network area.. Just so we can try to grab a concept of how this is rolling out..
Oh I just got it as well
Biggest joke I was holding the home button and I thought I got it but actually it is due to the title of this thread

Regional.. That's why instead of saying "I got it" people need to say what carrier, what region and whether rooted or not..
Just got it... I long pressed the homme button and Voila!
I'm on tmobile and in southern California.
Installed apks for Google services and assistant. I can get it to work at the first press of home button. I get to the assistant, and I can work with it until I close it. The next time I press the home button, I get to the Google now, or search on screen app. If I then log out from google now and close it. I can press the home button again and get to "set up assistant" and use that until I close it. Next time I open it, back to Google now. What am I missing.
Unrooted, out of Sweden but with English system settings.

I suspect you will find no rhyme or reason to who gets it when just like a lot of things Google pushes out. It's a server side change using who knows what algo Google cooked up. Nothing you can do but sit and wait.
yeah it sucks. holding home doesn't bring me to Google now cards anymore. hate it.

Fire 10 (2017) - Google play apps won't open due to sd card error

Hello,
Yesterday, several apps I downloaded through the google play store (sideloaded weeks ago, never had any issues) and one from the amazon app store are grayed out and I get an error when I try opening them that says "SD card not available" and goes on to tell me the SD card where the app installed isn't available. I've never had an SD card in the tablet. I can click "download again," but of course that brings me to the amazon app store.
I have tried re-installing, force stopping and clearing caches, restarting, and updating apps. The weird thing is I can get to the apps if I take another route in ie. if I go on google maps (not affected by issue) and go to a restaurant's website, it opens in Chrome (app affected by issue). Then, Chrome runs normal.
If it makes any difference, the apps that don't work are Chrome, Gmail, YouTube, Memrise, Hulu, and Google Sheets.
Thanks in advance for any help!

I had the same problem today with Aquamail. I went to another launcher that I had installed through the Play Store, and uninstalled it from there. Then a reinstall worked. And then the icon for the app appeared in both launchers. I have no idea why it said it was an error with the SD card. There's just some bug with whatever new update they gave us. But that's the only app I had it occur on.

Hmm, I tried uninstalling the app in every way I can think of - including through the play store - and no dice. I have also found that when I uninstall the app, the icon doesn't go away. When I uninstall from the play store and try to uninstall from the home screen, it says the app wasn't found in the list of installed apps. But when I tap to open, it gives the same SD card error.
I'm still really puzzled by the fact this isn't limited to google play apps...does that mean it's something with the OS?

The way I uninstalled was by going to another launcher (total launcher) . You tried that also? I only had it happen with that one app, and it was from the Google Play Store. As far as why it's happening, I really don't know. But it seems to have happened to me today, which makes me think it had something to do with an update either yesterday or today.

Oh no I haven't tried another launcher - didn't know what that was until I just looked.
I also notice that every app I update grays out now. Newly installed apps don't appear on the home screen. However, they all open fine if I open it through the app store or another functioning app. So I'm wondering if I uninstall it through total launcher if it won't even appear on the home screen once re-installed.
How do you install a launcher? I installed one, but when I hit the home button, it brings me back to the default Amazon launcher.

It sounds like this won't help you, but I'll point you to it anyway. Look for the XDA thread called New: Any Launcher, No Root (Launcher Hijack V3). This talks about installing other launchers and hijacking the home button. Sorry that I can't think of anything else. You might try I factory reset and start over, but you may not want to do that, and it may not solve your problem.
---------- Post added at 07:37 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:33 PM ----------
Sorry, I didn't see one of your posts. I have also had the problem where anything I install does not show on the fire launcher home screen. But it will show on other launchers. This started yesterday or today for me, so something in one of the updates caused this. If you use another launcher it will probably solve the problem of not seeing the apps on a home screen. But you said it did not help your problem with those that you cannot delete. Evie is a nice launcher that is simple to use, so you might start with that one.
I think I was wrong in what I told you before. I thought I was able to uninstall aquamail which said something about requiring the SD card. But it just happened to me with a different app, and I get that sd card error. So I think I was misled because I uninstalled it and then reinstalled over in the other launcher. Then when I looked back on the fire launcher, the icon was there and it could be clicked. But if you really want to get rid of it and not reinstall, I don't see a way to do that yet. Sorry to have been on the wrong track.

Okay, I learned a little more. I'm not sure if all of these steps are necessary. But I went to settings, apps and games, All, Home Pages. That's the fire launcher. I cleared its cache and data and force stopped. Then when it is launched again, the apps that couldn't be deleted are now no longer showing. However, if you had arranged all the icons in some kind of order, now it is all alphabetical. I also think that newly installed apps do show, but I haven't really done much testing with it yet. I'm mostly sticking with another launcher. So I don't really care about the fire launcher, but once in awhile, I might like to use it. So it's good to see that we can clean these things up.
EDIT: Ignore what I said about it now being alphabetical. It seems to be in the order that apps are added.
Got the same Problem now, but on a new Fire HD8!
Apps were running fine yesterday or a day before and now 3 apps installed from Google Play Store are Grayed out and give the error "SD-Card not Available" and i should insert the same SD-Card... Did you try the steps I mentioned in the previous post for the Home Pages app?

No, i am using the Stock Launcher and didnt do any changes to that. Besides that i do have the Option to deinstall the Apps and the Apps are still running fine, but only when opened from Play Store.
And i dont think deleting cache or forcing stop of App will do any good as long as the Apps itslf still work.
Yea, there must have been some minor update. He showed me something in system updates, but OS is still 5.6.0.0

I'm talking about clearing cache, data, and force stop of the Home Pages app itself. I'm not talking about the apps that you installed. Try it and see what happens.
Looked around and found this from User "Ms_Carla":

Did exactly the same steps above and now works fine again. Grayed out Apps are back. <3
Lets hope the best and that it stays like that

That post was doing the exact same thing that I was suggesting that you do. Not sure why you wanted to act on that one and did not do what I was telling you.

Well not exactly the same... In Your Post you say to Stop/End the Launcher.. Thats different to Appstore.
I dont like fondling around with launchers... And i dont want other Launchers than Stock or missing/deleted Icons And Installing other Launcher to fix a problem is no alternative
You are right that I overlooked the part about App Store. I assumed that person was telling you to do the same thing that I did.
You don't have to install other launchers. I was just giving an example of how you could see the apps and do what you needed to do by installing another launcher. I wrote that part before I realized what the "fix" was for the stock launcher. But if you want the original stock launcher to work, you will need to do the steps that I mentioned. Clear cache and data and then force stop for Home Pages, which is the name of the stock launcher

I had the same problem, your advice:
"settings, apps and games, All, Home Pages. That's the fire launcher. I cleared its cache and data"
pulled out all the problems, thank you. I had three programs, including PLAY STORE, give that error message and then grey out and become unclickable and unable to be removed. I had did a factory reset three times in two days, and then couldn't get PLAY STORE or any apps downloaded through it to show up on the HOME screen. your suggestion of clearing the "Home Pages" cache and data brought everything working properly. Thank you.

Glad I could help. It's happened to me a couple more times. I learned that the easiest way is just doing a force stop on the Home Pages app. Clearing cache and data means a little more work when the launcher comes back up (it wants you to step through some instructional screens, but I think you can exit out of them) . But if you don't have another launcher to switch to, I don't think you can do the force stop while you are actually using Home Pages as the home launcher. I can't be sure about that because I am rooted now, so the behavior might be different if I was not rooted.
Clearing cache and data probably works for all cases, so maybe that's the way to go. I've made it a little more confusing by adding the detail that I just did in that first paragraph!
Slowly does it

Hello,
Yesterday, several apps I downloaded through the google play store (sideloaded weeks ago, never had any issues) and one from the amazon app store are grayed out and I get an error when I try opening them that says "SD card not available" and goes on to tell me the SD card where the app installed isn't available.

I had this problem. Tried everything to no avail
But I left my fire 10 on all day as I use alexa a lot and the greyed out icons slowly came back.
Restarted the tablet and they where greyed out again but they came back quicker this time.
I know it's a pain to leave it on but something seems to be running slow in the os,
Not a permanent fix but it may help until an update os comes out
