I had the same problem..
I installed the v4.0.8E WiFi + 3G HD with Black theme from this xda thread [MOD][2.5.16/4.0.23] YouTube APK with 720p HD playback (WiFi + 3G)
Nice with the black theme on ICS
Fixed the crashing 4.0.23 crappy youtube market app.

yes it's better if you can download apk manger from play store it will make an apk back up for the app

Also, this version of google map also is way smoother than the new google map.
YouTube version is 3.5.5; map version is 6.9.0.

I have never heard that vm heapsize affects battery
However for longr battery
Uninstall apps lile facebook google plus.. Auto brightness apps
Disale samsung bloat if u dont use it..
Dont use phone while charging
Use internet on edge if u okay wid it..
But edge speed is not more than 30knps in our carrier in bangladeah

Same here .. Its 128 kbps in india... Download is 10kbps...
Bt its good if u use mainly.for.chatting...
