Media server - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Is anyone else having this problem with media server constantly running and draining battery. Yesterday the media server didn't drain any of my battery but today after I charged it out stayed on the whole time and drained my battery when the plunge should have been in deep sleep. Any idea how to turn it off. I don't have a lot of music on my phone just 12 sums in my extSD card. Any ideas?

Ok I think I solved the problem. I moved the few tracks I had from the external sd card to the internal and so far no battery drain from media server. But if anyone has a better solution please help because my phone will get full quickly if I have to store all my movies and music internal.

Import from the cloud or computer itself. Faster imo

If I use a custom ROM, will that help solve the media server issue?

Its draining my battery like crazy

What media server issue? Isn't it simply related to listening to music?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
No it won't. A custom kernel, like franco or trinity, can help prolong your battery life significantly though. (some custom ROM may use though kernels)
Media server service is used for a lot of stuffs. Like syncing contacts or emails, sending your location to Google, listening to music, reading newspaper, etc. There maybe some apps that are using your service and draining your batter via media server service, but custom ROM can't help you much with that.
Edit: There's also a mod that kill the service all together. I haven't tried it, but you might want to.

A kernel makes a bigger difference than a ROM.
We need more information on your end to see what's using your battery.
Its happened since I first turned the phone on ever. I disabled currents and music but damn it never happened on my GNex. At first it did but using Francos kernel and AOKP I never saw the problem again. I'm using Franco's kernel now too

It seems to be the consensus in the xda community that it media server issue is related to corrupted media files, be it images or music. However I don't think this is the case.
I have the issue only when playing my sd card music from a music player like power amp. It doesn't happen when not using it. I turned off all scanning within the app and it is still happening. I think this is a 4.2 issue... I deleted all of the files on my SD card then resynced and it's still happening! This was not an issue with the same EXACT content on the galaxy nexus. Can anyone help fix battery drain issue!?

[Q] battery drain by "media server"

Hello,
Sometimes, I Have a heavy battery drain (50% in 2h without doing anything and with screen off)
Under battery info I can see that "media server" in 1st position with 60% of battery usage.
Do someone knows which app can launch this "media server" ? Perhaps I don't close It correctly ... Or will remove it.
Were you listening to music or watching videos by any chance ?

On my Nexus it means that VLC is running : you can try to clean multitasking after watching a movie and see if it change something.

Honestly, I was worried about this earlier on but I stopped because I realized it tied into my use of music and movie apps. I get what I think is great battery life from my n4(10+ hours of heavy use but I'm rooted running pa3 with Franco 102 kernel), just do your due diligence(turn off WiFi and the Google location stuff...also, don't leave apps running when you don't need them.) and you should be fine.

FWIW, Greenify is great here for me.
I used Pandora, Songza, etc, but even if I exit, they still run in the background. With greenify they "hibernate" once I leave them. Useful for a whole lot of apps that seem to hang out in the background.
Google play music was my culprit for that media server drainage

Please search this topic has been discussed since day one. There's a fix for it...someone here in the forum. I wish I could provide you the link but I can't right now.
This happens when you have a corrupted media file and the system is constantly on to scan it.

huge mediaserver/audioout_2 wakelock hogging battery life

Today i want to work and put the device in a drawer. never touched it during the whole shift but one phone call. during a five hour period 30% of the battery was wasted. bbs showed audioout_2 wakelock took place for 5 hours. screen time was 30 minutes. I haven't kept any screen shots from bbs but i did capture on system battery usage.
what could have caused it?

op, perhaps a little enlightenment on your setup(rom/kernel) would yield helpful information from someone running similar setup

STOCK EVERYTHING .
not even rooted or bootloader unlocked. An out of the box Nexus 4 16GB (301k),.
Perhaps there's a corrupted media file somewhere in the storage system.

I have no media files on my storage, all my music is via GOOGLE PLAY.
(the wakelock is not caused by google play because since I booted the phone I have not listened to any music)
There seems to be a fix for the problem, haven`t used it myself though. Link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2050252. Its a init.d script at boot and you need root.
I wish to avoid rooting my device. when I bought the nexus I wanted to have a vanilla Google experience.
Also I don't wanna void my warranty.

Not rooting a Nexus is like forbidding the Pope to pray But to each his own.
Yeah I know, I think I'll root if i hear reports that rooted devices can receive official google updates

I remember one time, I left a game without closing the game. 5 hours later my battery dipped and I tried to figure out why. I realized that the game was still running in the background and drained a good 30% of my battery because of the mediaserver. I know it was still actice cuz when I hit recent it picked up exactly where I left off with no lag jumping back into it.
I'm guessing the game isn't coded to freeze in the background when you leave it. I could be wrong, but this is one possibility I think.
I'm on PA, with the matrix kernel. The game is called PAD in case anyone wants more info. I say, just be sure to exit games or generally certain apps when you finish playing them.
This only happened once and since then never again since I started closing that particular app correctly. Also, I don't mess with any music volume booster mods. Just get some noise isolating earbuds/headphones. The volume booster mods definitely killed battery much quicker than it was worth with my first nexus 4
I close everything and still got 1.5h of AudioOut_2 and AudioOut_3 wakelock overnight . 20% battery drain overnight. normally my battery drains 5-6% overnight.
up
Maybe there is a corrupt file on your phone, it doesn't have to be music, could also be a ringtone or a video.
considering you don't want to root I would consider factory reset then reinstall 1 app at a time until you find the culprit. I know it's time consuming but it's either that or keep your charger handy

Battery drains fast!!!! Help!!!

For the past few days I've been noticing that the battery is draining terribly fast, a quick check in the battery details page revealed that my wifi is being used throughout the time my phone is on, even though the wifi is off in settings and quick songs notification panel. How's that possible?. Is it some app which is using the wifi?. But can the app use the wifi which is off? . My S4 is a GT-I9500 model running 4.4.2

WIFI is always ON in your example, but it is not the issue you are looking for.
You have to find what application ( or wakelock) is running in background when your graph is in AWAKE state.
Drain? What drain? There is absolutely no drain visible on the screenshot. Your screen uses power. That's normal for a screen to do.
Smart Stay and adaptive (screen mode) drains battery a lot so you should consider disabling it.
I've turned off adaptive display, ill check if it will improve the battery life. Thank you

It came down from 95 to 13 within 7 hours, no games, no text's, 4-5 phone calls. Dats it. I once in a while turn on the screen for checking time and browse through my gallery. The charge went down 7% while i was typing this reply

As u can see from this graph, my phones charge came from 95 to 15% in just 7 hours, with hardly any usage. Is this issue hardware related, could a faulty battery be the culprit. My phone is just 3 months old and still under warranty, should i consider replacing it.
