Hi. I think I promised to tell my feelings of the Samsung slab after I got it, so here goes:
tl;dr: I like it very much, almost perfect for what I want it to be.
Specs we all know, so not much point brooding over that.
(EDIT: For those of you who want to know: Froyo.XWJJ3 / Baseband P1000XXJID / Kernel 2.6.32.9)
Price: I'm paying 32.90€/month for mine, no other charges. Unlimited data/calls are part of my earlier contract. I think it's worth it, even though the price is quite high compared to, for example, the states.
First impression: Sturdy, heavy. Perfect size. NICE display.
Usage
Browser: Otherwise butter-smooth (pinch-to-zoon is smooooth), but somehow scrolling is really jerky. I don't like that, but it's not THAT bad.
Camera: Sucks balls. It's easy enough to use and that 7" display is a treat to use as a viewfinder, but really, the camera is bad. Much worse than SGS's. (Still pictures, I haven't tried video.) I haven't really tried in good like outside (hard this time of year here), but inside the pictures suck. No way to say it nicer, sorry.
Interface: I hate TouchWiz. The stupid "you-are-on-screen-#" at the top spoils the look and makes it impossible to arrange widgets so that the topmost looks good. The Application Drawer is .. I don't know.. infernal? If there wasn't LauncherPro Plus available for such a small price, that alone would've made me re-think the purchase. I can't comment on the smoothness of TouchWiz on Tab since I installed LP+ after just about 20min of use. LP+ on the other hand, is butter-smooth. I really like it even though it only supports the standard 4x4 grid of icons (or, with the option I always keep selected, 4x5 grid).
I don't use the included mail client since I only use Gmail. No comments on that. The calendar is really good, it fits my usage perfectly. the Notes app is about the same as in SGS and I couldn't really live without it anymore. I use it too much
The reader's hub is rather pointless here, since the newpaper AND magazine parts aren't yet activated. Only the books work, and since it's the Kobo reader, it only supports the kobo-store and can't import ePubs (at least I couldn't find the option). Sucked balls, but at least Samsung included the "eBook" app by Aldiko.
Which, weirdly, is NOT the same app that is included with the SGS. The Tab's version is waaay better with more options to view/arrange the books and looks nicer with page transition animations. Weirdly though, it takes RREEAALY long to load a book if it has many pages. Much, much longer than the free Aldiko app takes on the same Tab. I like the free app so it doesn't matter that much.
The speakers aren't really that great. Much, much better than SGS, but that isn't much to say, SGS's speakers suck deep. You aren't going to enjoy listening music via the speakers, but I don't think anyone expected that anyway. They are good enough for game sounds and voice calls.
Incidentally, call quality is top-notch compared to Desire or SGS. I can't see why I wouldn't use the Tab as a primary phone al the time (other than the fact that I own the SGS already and carry it with me anyways). If you have something private to talk about, use headset (or a separete phone as I do with SGS. Since they all work with the same contract via MultiSIM, I can use every device interchangeably as they all ring the same time and calls come from the same number regardless of what device I call from.)
Size: YES IT DOES FIT. (sorry) Unlike some other forum members seem to think (and now that I really own the Tab, I REALLY call shenanigans on some parts of that said member's writings, or his sanity, depends) the Tab IS pocketable. I only own TWO pairs of trousers that I can't fit the tab in. I only carry it in front pockets so I can't comment on back pocketing ability) The build quality is SUPERB it doesn't, really doesn't feel like plastic-y like the SGS. When that one member commented something about breaking the Tab in half, he was either Trolling on purpose, or he had been trolled BADLY in the first place. The Tab is really sturdy and I couldn't bend it if I wanted to, much less BREAK it. The front is covered with Gorilla Glass for added protection.
It IS rather heavy, so I don't expect to carry it around in any trousers that don't sport a belt, but that's not really a problem. I don't use jeans at all, so don't know about those.
It DOES NOT recharge when connected to a computer via an USB port. The supplied charger, however is standard-looking adapter that plugs into a mains socket and has an USB-port on the top. I will test to see if the tab recharges from a) two usb ports on a computer connected with y-cable, like some 3G modems need or b) 3rd-party USB-charger like that one Samsung supplied (but goes around 5€ rather than ~30€ for the Samsung one...)
Somehow the Tab downloads/installs programs REALLY much faster than the SGS and it doesn't have the "SGS-lag" Supercurio is so adapt at fixing. I haven't tried any benchmarks for scoring, but based on pure opinion and usage, I'd bet that the Tab DOES NOT utilize the same RFS partitions as the SGS. At least it doesn't act like the SGS, which is all good and cool
The battery lasts long, but with only two days of use I can't comment more. I'll just say that as it came pre-charged and I played with it the whole day, it was only down to ~45% in the late evening.
Please, do ask questions about the Tab and I'll answer as much as I can. And I'll add more info about it after a few more days of use.
Thank you for your feedback here.
I also own it for two weeks now and I 100% agree with your comments and experience .
It is the best android device I ever owned to date (and I owned MANY).
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
I agree about that "best android device" statement. I really like this Tab a lot.
A couple more bits of info:
Sadly, no, you CANNOT recharge the thing with either a) or b) options. I was using a Deltaco -branded 5€ mains-socket -style usb charger rated with 1A and the Tab refused to work. Also same when connected to computer via y-cable adapter that came with Huawei's 3G modem (takes power from both usb-ports).
The supplied charger is rated at 2A, which might be the point here. I'll continue to search for a 3rd-party charger that would work because I really, really don't feel like ordering any number of the original Samsung adapters at that price.
The screen: OK - it's not a SuperAMOLED screen, which I'm DEEPLY in love with in the SGS. It is just pure bliss and heaven watching that 4" screen with so vibrant colors and awesome contrast - nothing even comes close.
But. It's no standard TFT either. I'd say it's just on par with normal AMOLED/SuperLCD screens used in the HTC Desire currently. Definitely better than the HTC Hero's screen. The black is not as black as SGS's SuperAMOLED but otherwise the color reproduction is quite close to that. It's crisp and contrasty enough.
I'm not complaining at all
Thanks for the review man
Its great to see that the battery is up to some heavy usage and that its nice and smooth to use.
As soon as vodafone gets its act together and puts them up for order here, I'll have mine 24 hours after that Still can't believe that its so close to release and there's no prices *grumble*
This has been discussed before... the tab will charge over powered USB. Just very, very slowly.
The USB can be plugged into an Apple Iphone socket and used in the wall as well to charge....

Well, I'd really like this to be true. But unfortunately at least my Tab doesn't. Or then it recharges REALLY slow, I mean less than 1% in 3 hours. I tried.
Mine just displays the charge icon overlaid by a circle with a slash when connected to any other than the supplied charger.
I don't own an iphone so can't try that charger.

Just a correction, with launcher pro you can have even a 10x10 grid, the option is under homescreen settings

Not REALLY, no. It's just a grid to arrange the icons, it's not "the real thing". As in, with that columns/rows option, LP just crops/cuts the icons/widgets and sticks them to the screen. MOST of the time this just looks HORRIBLE. There's another option that allows the real 4x5 grid, and that's what I'm talking about. The columns/rows option is just a "virtual" grid over the "real" one.
Ok, I don't make much sense, but try it. I wouldn't keep those options up more than absolutely necessary, they destroy any semblance of nice visuals there is
EDIT: Hookay, TRY before speaking... I was talking with the experience of using that option in the Galaxy S.. on Tab it ACTUALLY looks kinda good... I admit, my fault. -> I'm now using a grid of 6x7 and it looks mighty good - thanks for that mate!

I always (regarding phones, at least) use a powered hub (or my G19 keyboard, which acts like a powered hub anyways), or the aforementioned Deltaco-brand charger that outputs 1A (double the amount of a powered usb port) but still no dice. My Tab just DOES NOT recharge on anything else that I have available than the supplied 2A-rated Samsung charger. I haven't tried y-cabling two of those, but honestly, that is going a bit too far
Fortunately, recharging the Tab is not that an issue as it is with the SGS, I'm still only down to 52% battery and I last recharged yesterday evening-ish or so. Played with it a lot and read late at night. Been surfing and doing stuff the whole day with it. I'm guessing from current battery drain that I can get around 20h of near-constant use out of it, which is way more than I expected so I'm very happy with it.

Can you please give further information on this ~ as in where you got the SIM's from, how much, what kind of tariff, etc. etc.
I would dearly love to use the same SIM contract on both my Galaxy S & Tab.

Well, it is kind of standard here in Finland for operators to offer such service. Mine is from Saunalahti. The original contract is from 2006? or 2008 I don't really remember. It includes 3000 min of calls to the same (and parent/sister) operator. Monthly payment is 0€. (it was originally like this because I took a phone at the same time.)
Later I added a data plan to it that's 13.90€ per month, includes unlimited data at unlimited speed (depends on network) and MultiSIM for up to 5 devices total. All features of the original and data plans are accessible from all the five devices simultaneously except sms messages only arrive to the device with the original sim card.
Well, that's it, really.

Many thanks..... Appreciated.
If anyone in the UK has heard of a similar deal I would be very interested.
I'm currently on T-Mobile and they told me they do not do multi-SIM deals.
I seem to remember Tesco selling two cards for one some time back but this has now stopped.
Thanks in advance.
My opinions are here.

Yeah I got mine at lunchtime on Monday from CPW on Oxford Street. Came with a free 16GB memory card. I ended up going for the £500 deal + £10 monthly contract.
First impressions are that it's just a big phone. It does everything my HD2 loaded with Android 2.2 does, perhaps a little bit less! My tab does seem to like streaming my mp4 files from a http server even though they stream on my phone. Another minor minor quibble is that the Facebook contacts don't sync pictures with my current contacts but I'm not too arsed about that.

For those who actually were able to make it to the NY Event, how do you feel about your purchase? It is meeting or exceeding expectations? Is it heavier or fatter than you thought it would be? I'm hoping to see some reviews from actual users, not review-sites. I know there are a lot of the IO edition users here, but I feel when you plunk down $500-600 for a device, your feelings are amplified and may provide for a "different" review.
Edit: and for those who wanted the grey, how do you feel about the white that you had to purchase? I originally wanted white, but feel that the grey would be more durable (that's a total guess, though).
My specific question regards creak and light bleed. I love the Asus transformer Inks some slight light bleeding along the bottom and right side. It is minor but I am obsessive.
Don't mind the bigger size of it as I do prefer its expandability.
Only review out since new release of the Samsung tab is on mobiletechreview YouTube. I could swear I see some light bleeding along the bottom and right sides. If this is at all an issue on these tabs I am happy to stay withmy Asus.
But my return window ends tomorrow so need help deciding now.

I'm happy with my purchase. i am also glad that i went in the afternoon (2:30p) instead of joining some line it literally took 2minutes tops. The build quality is actually quite sturdy considering that it is extreamly light, everything just fits snug and tight no creaks. i didnt notice any light leakage, but i was slow to notice it on my evo until i saw what to look for, so it's not noticible if present at all. i think for me personally no matter which tab i keep i'm going to be giving up something from the next, i like the sd card and the overclocking of my xoom but i gave it up for the light weightness and the sleakness of 10.1.

Corrected. It just feels like over a month away
you guys that bought one in NY, help us out with a 3.1 system dump
Hey,
I purchased mine yesterday, I got their at about 11:15am before the sale started. I really wanted to purchase the 32gb but ended up just buying the 16gb. This is my first 'tablet' that I've ever purchased.
I have a Droid 2 Global phone and I've done all the rooting etc/loading different mods etc and I'm looking forward to doing it with this. I bought this because I want to customize it the same way I did for my phone.
I'm kind of disappointed that i''ll have to buy the usb desktop hub thing in order to get full the usb functionality. Other than that though I really like it.
I bought the Wi-fi version because i can easily tether it to my phone (and have- it works really well). I commute from NJ to NY every day so I wanted something for the train that was bigger than my phone. I think its worth the purchase.
PS i voted - YES
I bought mine yesterday after work around 6:00 and I can honestly say that as a former Transformer owner, the Tab is a much better tablet for the extra $100. No light bleed, no creaks, no FCs...none at all. Plus its a lot more comfortable to hold especially over a longer period of time. Be advised that if you are a Mac owner there is currently no way to transfer through USB. I had to use doubletwist and sync wirelessly.
Did you try the Kies for Mac beta?
I was third in line. I'd been waiting since 5 in the morning. I'd planned to get the 32GB in grey, but since they only had the 16 white, I was a little let down...until I started to use it. I'm totally and completely happy with the device, and can't see myself being separated from it. I've already ordered the USB adapter from Samsung so I can connect my travel HDD and thumb drives for movies. I actually am so happy with it that I'm going to keep the White 16GB.
I wish i could see why the 2 people who are unhappy wothhthe device have voted as such. Assuming, that is, that they're not just trolling.
I'm only selling mine because I want the 32gb version. its a really sweet device.
I was 13th in line at BB and also was disappointed that the 16 GB white was the only model available. I let a couple of the Samsung reps know my dissatisfaction with the way the whole thing was handled, but that's a gripe for another thread. I'm happy with the unit and have zero regrets and, if I didn't like the gray-backed one better, I'd totally keep this one. Those that haven't gotten to handle one yet will be very happy with the unit.
I stopped in at 9pm on the 8th and there were plenty left. It's already listed on ebay in hopes I can make a few bucks. If not I will return it to Best Buy. Build quality is fantastic but 3 major issues:
1. How the F do you transfer files? I'm not interested in hunting down drivers or trying to find back door soutions. The whole purpose of getting an Android device over an ipad is NO ITUNES meaning DRAG AND DROP. I have tried connecting on Mac OS and Windows with no luck in getting any of my computers to recognize the device.
2. I installed Dropbox, waited 2 hours for 1 movie file to transfer over (AVI/divx format) and when it had finally transferred, the default player would not support playback. I didn't even bother trying to DL another media player. The F'in default player should play divx files since that is what is advertised.
3. The damn USB cable requires the charging block that came with it to charge. I can't trickle charge on my laptop's port or use any of my USB travel chargers. That means 1 more charger PLUS one more stupid proprietary connecting port that I have to travel with. Maybe not a big deal to most but I fly about 150 times per year so 2 more things to have to remember to pack is a huge deal.
WARNING - this is a half baked OS. Looks pretty and the device flies but is nowhere near ready for mass consumption. I work 60-80 hours per week with a screaming 2 year old at home. I don't have time to search the web for stupid tricks to make this thing do basic things. For $500 I want something that works well and feels solid. And WITHOUT itunes.
Got mine last night a BB. They seemed to have at least a dozen left in the display area stack. But when I inquired 10 minutes ago they said they were sold out, though the may get more I stock by tomorrow.
I too wwas disappointed that the white model was the only one available, but in actual use it looks and feels pretty good. I may just stick with it.
Build is surperb, but honeycomb needs more tuning. Dedicated apps are supreme, just not enough of them. Looking forward to software improvements, including custom ROM, but I doubt I'll see better hardware before Christmas or ipad3 next year.
(Typing from my GT with thumb keyboard. Which is awesome!)
Mine died today. i was using it and i shut the screen off and now it wont turn back on... I will go back to Best Buy tomorrow to exchange it for a new one.
All and all I like it.
A
1. Downloading samsung kies driver from samsung's website should do the trick,no?
2. Don't bother to convert when transferring video files, and play it using a file a file manager, and it should be fine. (I've watched two HD David films with it already)
3. Not sure about the charging situation, shall check again.
hope this helps!

I fnally made the leap and bought the Thrive and I couldn't be happier! Yes this thing rocks! I must have visited Best Buy and Staples at least 5 or 6 times each, playing with all of the tablets trying to make a decision. They probably thought I was casing the joint or trying to steal one of the display units because of the way I camped out by the tablet section each time. And after spending a couple hours probably of combined time playing with them I can honestly say the Thrive was the best. Granted the Galaxy 10.1 & Transformer looked a little sleeker and sexier but to me this had the better screen, and response time. I noticed a little lag with the other two. I think the full size ports and SDXC finally did it for me. I can get 128GB of instant memory and/or hook up my 1TB WD Passport for another TB of space all without the need for adapters or special cables. I was showing my cousin how crisp and clear the 720p encodes I did looked and he was blown away. Then I unhooked his upconvert dvd player and plugged the Thrive in and played the same movie on his TV in HD and completely floored him. He told me I couldn't show his girlfriend, because she is a gadget geek like me and would want one! I don't know if this had been said before but regarding the tethering issue. I couldn't get Wireless Tether or Barnacle to work but suprisingly Sprint Hotspot worked with no problem using my Evo 3D. 3G and 4G. But overall I think Toshiba made a great product and I'm extremely happy with this thing. Havent rooted just yet, just waiting for some ROMS to pop up. Actually don't see the need, they haven't installed that much bloat and some of it is actually useful unlike the crap Sprint throws on every phone.
Hey that was an excellent comment . I was laughing as I was reading . Lol . The staples comment about casing the joint . Hahaha . Good way to ad some humor in your post . But yeah I too am happy couldnt be happier . I myself put hrs and hrs on reading about the fifferent tabs out . Its not always about who has the sexier looking tablet or new gadget its really about what it xan do and this thrive is 100% amazing . The first time I hooked up the full hdmi out to my hd tv and it just came right on my jaw dropped . I couldnt believe how fluent it was . Clarity and all . I did a youtube demo on it and for the first while doing a video I went to the media app and connected to my network server figured id show that off and my hdd from pc came right up so I click a movie and within 15 seconds the movie started to play . Lol now that really made me feel good . This thing is awesome and yiur right you made a good choice in the tablet world ! Welcome

That's a diction error, at the most. And you should be able to let that slide seeing as capacitive screen technology rely on capacitance theories.

I was wondering about development too. It is really what is stopping me from picking up one.
i saw a video on youtube of the location where they develop the actual chip, can't say it instilled a lot of hope.
At worst flash a different rom and do a little cleanup and its good to go.
OK I'm 2 hours in and i have ran into a few issues. First of all the stock software is horrible. they load a bunch of weird stuff on to it before they ship them out. While my daughter was playing Bouncy Mouse it locked up the screen went non responsive and the music continued. I had to hard reset it buy long pressing the power button for 15 seconds. at that point i figured what the hell. ias soon as it came up i reset it back to its factory setting. this seems to have improved it a bit. we will see. I will keep you all posted.
that just makes me more worried, lol
maybe you'll have some luck with a different rom.
Well resetting it helped a ton. You have to more sure you don't try and over work it. I kissed mx player onto it and it plays video flawlessly. Netflix works great. I am very happy with it.

This is the working hulu plus apk. I have used it and can confirm it works great.

I'm jumping on this one
I figure for 70 bucks it's worth trying. If nothing else it will be good for keeping the kids quiet in the car.
Tablet + MiFi hotspot + Netflix = Mom and Dad don't have to threaten to pull over lol.
Ordering today, I will post how long it takes to arrive and maybe even a little unboxing video

i'd really rather get the cheaper one tho if the battery lasts atleast 4 hours surfing web pages.
Screen protector and rubber/silicon case
Planning on getting a couple of these for my kids. That way I won't cry too hard if they do get broken!
Anyway, since they are for kids, does anyone have any idea which screen protectors and silicon/rubber cases may fit these?
Thanks!
I read that in actuality 1.5 hrs is the actual battery time, is that what you guys are getting?
I want to buy this tablet as a movie player for my son for road trips.

Hi guys. Im typing this on my verizon note 3. The note 3 I was soo excited about and waited anxiously since the leaks came out. Etc... I finally got it (I come from a gnex) and ya know what? Its a huge dissapointment!
The note 3 feels terrible in hand with its sharp edges. 1 handed use is impossible and the development scene due to verizon and samsung is a embarrassing joke! (3 lousy threads in dev section here, no kernels etc..)
One thing I loved on the gnex was the custom kernel with gmd tap to wake. This is a feature that comes second nature. Knock on on the g2 is this but native and works awesome. I find myself tap tapping all other devices no instinctively to wake them lol..
I stopped by a vzw store on the way home from work and played with a display model. Put tue note 3 sode by side.
The g2 display kills the note 3! Also the g2 feels so much more snappier as well.
Anyways... the big issue everyone has with the g2 over the n3 is no sd card... I never had an issue with my gnex but i had an idea..
I mainly listen to my music on my long commute to and from work via bluetooth. I drive a 2013 500 Abarth.
Its got a powered usb port in the glovebox.
Heres my idea....
Buy an adata dash drive air.
Load it with a 128+gb card with all my music files. Stick it in my glove box and pull all my audio from it wirelessly to the G2 and play it over bluetooth.
Think this would work?
Get I car. I have nfc tag on my car dock. Connect BT. Connect the adata drive. Hit the google now button on car mode ultra. "Play iron maiden aces high" boom.. plays...
I have a 128 or larger full collection in the car at all times..
