Nexus 4 wont make calls - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Nexus 4 has been going in and out of service since Thursday. I'm not sure if it's the cell towers by my house or what.
The phone says I have full H service but whenever I try and make a phone call the call is automatically dropped and whenever I try to surf the web nothing loads.
My phone isn't rooted, any advice would be awesome.

I did this and it worked just fine but when I woke up this morning it was having the same problem again. I turned off the phone for 3 minutes again and it started working again. I don't want to have to go through this every day I want to use my phone. I'm thinking about going to the t mobile store later this afternoon and talking to them about it.

The problem seems to only happen within a mile of my house. I've never had this problem before until last Thursday.

Same thing happened to me today... when I camed out of work my phone's 3g/edge icon was gone. I decided to reboot and the phone was working but with no data. I then reset to factory setting and now I cant log in because there is no data. I tryied my other phone and data is fine. Something happened to my g1 that the 3g and edge is not getting turn on... i am on hold for a t mobile representative
ha u must live near me in florida then lol i talked to the people from t-mobile from there store and they said the 3g towers got a bug and shut down
Early this morning my coverage went out.... no 3g or data... I tried to manually start data and that didn't work... I went to bed and it came back when I woke up.
Maybe this is temporary.
i was experiencing the same problem all afternoon data has JUST returned however. Patience fellas. No network is perfect.
Wow, I am glad to see others experienced this. It happened to me right around 4:50 Central time. (I know because I was walking out the door at work.) I was logging into IM and I had a signal then it went away, completely. I had no 2g or 3g at all. When I got home, WiFi worked fine, but nothing else. Hours later I tried it again and no go. I turned on airplane mode, then turned airplane mode off and then 3g and 2g came back on.
The only thing I did out of the ordinary was mess around with bluetooth, I hadn't used it up until then. I will play around with bluetooth some more to see if it is somehow related, but after reading others comments, I doubt it.
By the way, I am in the Chicago suburbs.
My data was down until about 12:30 AM last night. I'm not even in a 3g area either.

Powering off your phone may force a network refresh?

I refused to install the 911 update so I rooted my phone last night. This morning I called in and got a network refresh but the tech said powering your phone off and pulling the battery for about 20 minutes will force the phone to do a network refresh.
Can anyone with a newly rooted phone that still has no internet confirm this? It would make things a lot easier.
It would make sense , since there is a timeout period for the network. If you turn off the phone for a longer period of time the network just clears the address assigned to you (IP). Now do carriers do it that is another story

I can confirm that this does NOT work. I left my phone powered off for several hours and when I booted back up, I still did not have data. Call in and request a network refresh until you get one. Don't tell them you're using an HTC Magic, tell them you're using an iPhone, Blackberry, etc. Preferably mention some really old phone where they're not gonna be able to direct you through the menus, so they can't troubleshoot anything.

Carrier? Have you checked if they have problems?
Tried your SIM in a different phone?
Tmobile is the carrier..now i lost my signal all together....I dont have another phone to try my sim out on
ok...so both data and service came back for about 30 seconds...i got two white arrows going around in a circle like it was updating something then i lost all connections again and says emergency calls only
any ideas?
ok...i have this weird folder on my sd card named .android_secure...dunno where it came from looks new to me
data signal lost here
Hey, I'm having the same problem here, no weird folder in my sd card though. Went to bed last night everything was fine, woke up and my apn list was wiped.... I reset everything in the apn and still no data connection but I have service. I'm running the latest Cyanogen mod stable for nexus, almost seems like an update was attempted last night and since i"M not stock things went crazy....
Call t mobile and see if there is a data outtage.
I had no signal for like three hours last week.
tmobile uk? mines down too. manchester area.
sim cards do go bad.... i had this happen last year... maybe go to tmobile and see if you can get another if there are no reported outages.. the probably wont even charge you if you go to a corporate store
so i called tmobile and they said they knew what it was...had to turn my phone off for two minutes and still waiting to see if it worked..but i dont know why the sync or update arrows were showing up on my notification bar. sure hope it was Froyo passing me by

where are you, uk or usa?
I've had something similar happen to me as well. This was a few weeks ago. I live in Chicago, and use T-Mobile for what it's worth. I ended up pulling the battery for a bit and rebooting. I got the data connection back.
Sometimes though, the data connection will seem to hang a bit and I'll see the flashing arrows and sync icon as well. It seems random, but the last time it happened to me was yesterday.
back
It must have been a localized black out here in Washington State (US) because my data connection came back on just now after 3 hours of being shut off. For awhile there I only had edge and no 3g and without me doing anything 3G and H have connected back on.
Well that's good. The optimist in me says that the outages and weird issues are related to the upgrade of HSPA+ for us Let's hope it's true.
I had the same problem in WA. Data has also been restored here.

Data Issues??

Occasionally I get no data connection & I have to restart the phone, does any body else have that issue?

Haven't had that issue myself.

That works I wonder if its an issue, if anyone else has the prob let me know

I have that issue as well, idk why it happens but I'll add it to the list of problems for when I call to get a replacement.

That just happened to me today also. It switched from "H" to "E", then when I opened USA Today it FC-ed and the icon turned into a generic Android one like the app was on the SD card and unavailable (even though it's installed to phone) and then 5 more background apps that I didn't even know were running FC-ed (Amazon MP3, Finance, QuickOffice, something and then Facebook three times?) and the phone locked up. I was able to power off then back on, but data never came back even after waiting about 10 minutes until I powered off and on again. Quite odd.
I get the same issue where am connected to wifi and as soon as i walk away from it it doesnt connect back to the data network. I got a replacement phone coming so hopefully i dont have the same issue. Another thing is the random reboot and i get black screen a lot especially after rebooting

I've had the issue, but each time it appears to be related to JuiceDefender not properly enabling the radio. If I shut JuiceDefender off, the connection comes back, although sometimes its just easier to airplane mode it and be done with it.
I called T-Mo about it, they said call about a week after the inital release date and see if they have a fix by then, there isnt enough information kept since it hasnt been officially released yet.
I'm having the same trouble. Are you guys on the new sim card? I popped in the new sim card and the tech told me to not use it and just save it. I noticed when I put the new sim card a notification of a new voicemail came on. I didn't have any voicemail.
Edit: I'm starting to have some serious data issues. I'll get cut off, but my phone will still show full bars and "H". I try the whole airplane thing and it still does nothing. I constantly get the "check network setting, try again or cancel". My market wont load, browser says "unable to connect." This is getting stupid. When I call T Mobile it always start working and then cuts off shorty after hanging up. I've never had this isssue before. I live in the middle of the city. Only 3G around here. Its getting annoying.
Guys I'm afraid that it might problem with the antenna placement. Holding the phone on the bottom half will drop me from 3 bars of "H" to 4 bars of "G", then it will bounce back up to 4 bars of "E". If left on a desk then it will remain at 3-4 bars of "H". I notice this especially at a place where I have low-mid signal, such as my school (reinforced concrete FTL). When I have a strong 4 bar signal, it usually won't drop all the way down to edge but I do loose a few bars. I hope a simple software issue is enough to reduce this effect. I might be being crazy paranoid but I'm definitely noticing a lower signal than on my G1.
Try holding the phone by the edges, then hold it in a normal grip and see if the signal strenght changes (Menu->settings->status->signal strength)
I just got off the phone with tmo and was told its a known issue with the network affecting about 10% of users. The issue started for me yesterday on my hd2. He also said they have people working on it. I asked if I could get my buyers remorse set back 14 more days to ensure the issue is not permanment but he said that they are no longer doing extentions. I'm sure if I get tranfered to retentions the answer would change. I hope.

I'm also having the same issue. I just rebooted my phone, so I haven't had the chance of switching airplane mode on/off yet. I'll let you guys know if that works for me, either way, I'm hoping there's a fix from T-Mo.

Wow that's funny, my MYTOUCH does the same thing with airplane mode off/on. I also remember that the store demo g2 I played with last night had the voicemail icon in the notification bar, but when you pull the bar down, there's no option to connect and retrieve the voicemail. I found that even weirder since the phone comes preloaded with google voice.
Also experiencing the same issue here in Phoenix. Been having it since I got the phone on Monday.
I have been in an ongoing round of tech calls and will be having a follow-up with the tech who I spoke with last night... I've tried everything from APN resetting to swapping the SIM card to a total factory wipe -- nothing is changing this for me.
I *know* my neighborhood has full 3G access, but I am maxed out at 1 Mbps. (Before the factory wipe I was getting 0.35 Mbps.) If this doesn't change I may just return the phone and switch to Sprint to get the Epic 4G. I mean, I'm not getting HSPA+ coverage either way, and at least with the Samsung Galaxy S Pro I'd have a full 5-row qwerty...
>_<
Wow, this is really too bad. I was SO excited about this phone...

If this happens, try going to settings->wireless->mobile network->network operators and see if you get an "Error while searching for networks" error as I did.
Reset fixed for me too. But it makes me worry.
I'm on a brand new sim card (switched to TM from ATT). I'm having some data issues too. I talked to TM tech support and they reset my connection but that did nothing. Now they're going to their android techs to see whats up.
