Quick and to the point:
1. Is a clockwork backup a full image of the system, such that if I restore from it no matter what kernel, rom, mod, etc. I've installed, I get exactly the completely system and state that I had when I made the backup? I.e., it is a true failsafe against messing up the phone, so long as CWR will boot and the SD card is intact?
2. A complete backup with Titanium, backing up all apps and system data, is a migration path for trying a new ROM? IOW, I can simply do a complete backup with Titanium, wipe wipe wipe, install the target ROM, then restore "missing apps and data" from Titanium and -- voila! I'm on the new ROM, but with all my apps, configuration, etc. I had before?
I'm getting ready to try out the Syndicate ROM...

Ha! I am searching now for the exact same question! I am looking to try the Epic Experience. I will follow this thread to see what the answer is.
Thanks.
First off might I comment that Syndicate Rom is a great choice. Not just saying that cause any of them are my buddies either, cause IDK Any of them... so far though Running Syndicate Rom/Kernel with SetCPU at 200-1200 has been the smoothest Rom experience I have had up to date.

Yes in theory it is a backup of everything, data, apps installed, boot, system, literally the entire phone is backed up. Is it a failsafe though? I would rather say not. On some phones we can restore a clockwork recovery and have no issues, but since I've had my epic and switched around with different Roms, I've noticed that restore dosen't work quite as it should, probably because Roms are so much different, and you run into FC's, boot loops, and other issues... Restoring peices in advanced restore works well but a complete restore almost always has bugs.
True statement though that even if you screw up and get a boot loop, or constant force closes/phone restarts, as long as you can get back into clockwork your phone is not screwed. You were right on that one. So no worries if you wanna test and play.

You have the idea right. You really don't even need to back all your apps up with titanium anymore these days, though, it too is plagued with FC's and problems. If you are using clockwork recovery, and you have made a backup already... all you have to do when installing a NEW rom is first wipe-fest, then let it boot once, then restart, go to clockwork, go to Advanced Restore, and ONLY restore the DATA part. (Reason for this is if you restore Boot, System, etc it will try to restore the Rom you just installed... Data is where all your apps/settings are at) This will do exactly the same thing as titanium backup will do, only with less bugs and alot easier.
Cool... thanks for the great response.
It's too bad there isn't an iron-clad, 100% reliable means to take a snapshot of the phone that can be restored reliably.
On WM it was simply a matter of using one of the various backup utilities (I used SPB Backup 2) to make an image of the system. No matter what I did to the phone, I could always wipe it back to factory clean, then restore from backup and have my phone back exactly as it was, with no issues.
I'm trying a CW backup, factory reset, restore cycle right now to see what happens. I'll report back on my experience.
EDIT: Okay, one deviation from the WM experience: The factory reset did NOT reset the kernel -- MixUp is still showing as the running kernel. Is Odin the only way to get the factory kernel back?No matter what, I'm on my way after that to the Syndicate ROM!
EDIT: Okay, the CW restore seems to have restored everything back to the way it was, without problems after some brief playing around. No FCs (so far). On to wiping again, installing Syndicate Standard, then restoring data from CW as recommended here.

Alright I took the plunge and it seemed to work well. Some things that I noticed was that on first boot (before I did the restore), all of the preinstalled apps showed up (for instance, wireless tether, wired tether, launcher pro, etc...). Since I did a restore of the data, all of MY apps are there, but some of the apps that were preinstalled disappeared. Not all of them, though. For example, Launcher Pro and Wired and wireless tether disappeared, but Car Home is still there.
Another thing to note is that my widgets on the home screen don't seem to function correctly at first. I had to remove them and readd them to the home screen for them to work.
Other than that, everything is as it should be.

Hmmm... okay. So just to provide a different datapoint, I'll go the Titanium route to get my own apps and settings back, and report. I'm guessing CW wiped the DATA partition before the restore, wiping out the pre-installed stuff from the ROM.

Ok, since yesterday, I tried both ways. I did a wipe back to the default Syndicate Rom and installed Titanium Backup. While restoring, I noticed that not all apps would restore (seemed to be ones that were in the stock ROM so it's understandable). I did a restore of apps + data. Now, I had most of my apps back, however, I noticed that some of the data was missing. For me, most importantly was the SMS Messages. I also wanted to note that doing an application by application restore of the backup was very time consuming! I had to basically reinstall every app (and then Titanium restored the data)
Nandroid doesnt seem to touch the kernel on our phones ether I noticed. I had a problem yesterday after I flashed a new rom and when I went to do a restore through nandroid I got a bootloop. Once I reflashed the kernel it fixed the bootlooping problem. I have noticed this in other instances to with kernels not being backed up since I did one after I rooted my phone so I would have a stock image.
Thanks guys on your experience and feedback on the backup thing that I'm wondering what to do after stock root.

This is what I have been told in the past- a nandroid restore does not replace the kernel
Ok, so I have made a number of nandroid backups and after doing some ROM flashing I decided to restore to one of them. I am using TWRP2.6.0.0 and when I clicked on restore it went through all the normal processors for boot, system and recovery but when it reached the data section it took the usual time to restore data (300 secs or so) but then an error message appeared.OK I thought to myself, this backup must just be corrupt so I tried a previous one but the exact same thing occurred. I decided to reboot anyway and it booted up fine but strangely it seemed like the data had already been restored, Google account was logged in, alarms were set ect, but when I launched an app all the data had been erased. I have tried restoring backups using TWRP 2.5.0.0 and 2.6.0.0, backups both with and without compression and restoring each part indevidualy but still I got the same results. As I had no titanium backup data for most of my apps I used an app called nandroid manager root. This let me access the app data from by nandroid backups and restore them and that worked fine. For a while everything worked fine until I noticed a few of my apps had been uninstalled, exposed installer, too manager, 3d mark and few more, I tried redownloading from the play store but I keep getting "app not installed errors" I have also tried installing the apk and using root apps to install it but I keep getting errors. this makes me think some files must'be restored from the nandroid and are not letting the app be installed. I'm not sure and I'm quite a noob but I am wondering if their's anyway to fix this without factory reseeting and if theirs any way to get future nandroid backups to work. Thank you.
"Insufficient storage available" and "Error 24" after Nandroid restore
Hello all. This is one of my first few posts but I've been reading these forums for a while. This is the first problem I've really been stumped on even after Googling and searching these and other forums for a couple of days on and off.
Some background:
I had Cloudystock 2.5 installed on my D800 and had to SIM unlock my phone. Apparently Cloudystock didn't include the HiddenSIMUnlock apk. So I did a full Nandroid backup including EFS partition and installed the Stock Rooted KITKAT ROM - D80020k by Vectus. This gave me the option to SIM unlock and then I restored my backup. I cleared dalvik and regular caches for all the installs and restores.
I did make the mistake of restoring EFS once I had SIM unlocked, but I installed that stock ROM again, unlocked and restored which gave me the SIM unlock on the restored ROM.
I have deleted app cache through the storage settings. I have also backed up and wiped the SD-Ext partition to make sure that wasn't the culprit.
So, now comes the problem:
The big issue is that anything I try to install gives me either the "Insufficient storage available" error or "Error 24" It makes no difference what app I try to install. Also if I try to install directly and not via the Play store, it will not install the application.
This only happens on the restored backup. On Vectus's ROM or a Cloudystock new install, apps install fine. This leads me to believe it's a file on the data partition that is causing it. Otherwise though, everything seems to work as it should.
I forgot to add: installed applications auto-update without issue.
I'm pretty much stumped as to what to do next.
Some help would be appreciated as this has become somewhat frustrating and I would rather not lose my settings.
UPDATE: On a clean Cloudystock install, then restoring just /data the problem persists. Also, restoring then updating over it to latest Cloudystock does not change the behavior.
Does no one have any idea where this stems from? I would have to assume it's one or two files in /data creating this problem, but I don't have enough experience to know specifically which one.
Hi,
I had been using Temasek's Unofficial CM 11 ROM on my SM-N9005, then I decided to update to lollipop. So I backed up with Titanium Backup Pro, wiped data and dalvik and cache, flashed the AICP ROM, and now I'm trying to restore apps.
Restoring has been difficult in TB - it kept freezing/getting stuck on what seemed like random apps, and then it started to give me "Unfortunately, System UI has stopped" messages, which reappear a few seconds after they're dismissed.
I've somehow reached the point where if I install ONE more app (no matter what it is or whether it's restored from TB or downloaded from Play Store), I get "Unfortunately, System UI has stopped", but if I uninstall it I'm fine.
I know that apps should use more space with the ART runtime, but I have ~7GB of free storage so it can't be that. It seems silly, but is there some kind of app limit in lollipop that I'm unaware of?
Thanks in advance!
Actually the most important thing is what method are you using for restore? I mean are you using the only restore missing apps method or something else? Cause if you are using a method other than that then you will have problems.

Did you take a nandroid backup? If so, Restore it after wiping then use TB to make an Apps Update.zip and copy it across to your ExtSDCard. THEN flash the ROM and GApps - i also flash SuperSU.zip at the same time. Then I start the phone and set up basic info. Then Back to Recovery and run the Apps.zip file.
I also use Nova Launcher so once in I restore the backup and Voila! I have almost everything back as I like it.
Another thing to check is the SDCardfix - you might want to download a zip of it and flash it while in Recovery. Once it is done and you are in LP version it seems OK, but I had to restore and older version of Temasek's ROM and promptly had SDCard access issues until I ran the fix again.
Thanks for your replies!
I am definitely doing "restore missing apps with data", though I am deselecting some of the apps (the very large ones) before restoring if that's an issue.
I didn't take a Nandroid backup unfortunately, I usually don't as I have no need for the data other than apps. Using an "apps.zip" sounds like an interesting approach - I might try that next time.
I'll try to work with the SD card - should I try to find and flash an LP version of SDCardFix or just use the KK one?
I tried reflashing the rom after a data, dalvik, cache, and /system wipe. Then I restored all apps, but the same problem came back, so the problem seems to be replicable.
Some people in the forums have suggested doing a "Fix permissions" in CWM, however that feature was obviously removed. There's a flashable zip that restores the feature apparently. Do you think I should try that or will it have no effect?
Thank you!
