[Q] Rooting question - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I picked up a used Nook Color. It had a passcode on it so I did a factory reset. It is now sitting at the setup screen.
I am planning on putting CM10 on an SD card to be used on this NC. Do I need to go thru the setup process first?
Thanks.

No. And even if you tried, you would not be able to register it. But you could do what is called a skip OOBE, which essentially lets you run it in test mode without registering. You can learn how to do that from my NC tips thread linked in my signature. You might want to just put CM10 on internal memory since you cannot run registered stock anyway.

Because if it had a lock code, that means the original owner did not erase and deregister it and it can only be registered to one owner at a time.

I tried the oobe but could not get it to work cuz the volume keys do not seem to be working.
I then decided to try the setup and it worked. I got it to register with my B&N account. But the volume keys don't seem to work. I went into sound settings and found the mute box checked. I unchecked it and tried the volume keys but it went back to checked immediately. I see the software version is 1.4. Could this be a software issue?

I am surprised you could register it. It may have been a non-B&N ROM on there and they had deregistered before they installed it.
If you look again at my NC tips thread, I have a link for a CWM flashable 1.4.3 B&N ROM. But if the volume keys truly do not work, then you cannot make CWM work.

I have the NC running CM10 from SD card. Everything works except the volume keys. The down one works fine but the up does not work.
I can go to the boot menu and the volume keys both work to go up and down the boot menu items. Any ideas? Hardware? Software?

That is strange. The key does not work on stock or on CM10 on SD. Yet it works on the cyanoboot menu. To me that says hardware. Cyanoboot may use different key codes than ROMs. I know of no solution. You might try some third party diagnostic software from play store.

Thanks for all your help. I really appreciate it. I agree it is probably a hardware issue. I found a volume button assembly which should arrive in a few days. I plan to replace and see what happens. Have an awesome day and keep up the great work!!!!!

Highly doubting anything can help me unbrick my Nook Color[SERIOUS]

I've spent about 20 hours total trying to unbrick my nook color.
It started when I was (happily) running CM7, but I wanted to have HC preview 4 to use at times, so I decided to dual boot it. I went in to dual boot it, and it had an error. So I flashed the remove dual boot zip to reset it, then I went looking for an answer. I find that it looks like my media partition somehow got corrupt, so I go into ADB to see if I can get that working. From within adb I run "adb reboot recovery", and then it never turned on. Freaking out, I searched for an answer. I got it booting into CWM on SD, and Nookie Froyo SD. I've tried all the unbricking methods, even the advanced one that requires DDing boot.img and system.img. I got into adb from recovery and found that my partition table - I had none. So I find out how to fix that, and I do. Fixed it properly infact, looked exactly like it should. So then I go and DD boot.img and system.img, remove the SD, unplug from power, and try to boot into recovery, no luck. Tried a normal boot, no luck. I've done this multiple times. I think it has something to do with the boot partition, I verified it had contained the proper files(u-boot.bin, uImage, etc.), it was marked as bootable, but it wasn't booting.
I held down the power button for 25 minutes just to confirm without a doubt it wasn't(I watched a show while waiting, unfortunately it was my figure holding it down, not tape).
Nothing I tried fixed it.
I think I may have been one of the first to "actually" brick my nook.
Any tips on what I can do to try to unbrick it? Ask me questions, have me acquire data, I don't care.
I have access to adb in recovery, and adb connected wirelessly via nookie froyo sd bootable(for some reason it won't let me use adb via usb).
I apologize if this is in the wrong section.
Also, before you go saying that this is pretty much a repost of other threads, I looked at multiple threads with people trying to fix their nook, threads with 60 pages, read all of them. No one had a problem like mine.
If you are willing to put CM7 on the internal memory, follow the instructions here: http://mrm3.net/nook-color-how-to-install-cyanogenmod-nightlies/
Make your you use the latest version of CWR (v3.2.0.1) Once you have everything working properly, reformat the card to use as storage. Better, keep it as is in case you ever have to preform a new installation and buy a new card for storage. You will need one to properly use CM7 to full advantage.

I was hoping doing what you said would work - but it didn't.
I follow this guide(http://mrm3.net/nook-color-how-to-blue-dot-nook-color/) to get the partitions reformatted properly then installed it.
Glad the site still was able to help you with your issue....

Go to my youtube page.
Download my ROM by clicking more on my description.
Extract and burn to a SD card with WinImage or something.
Seems like you need to fix your boot partition. Hold the power button down for 15 seconds with no USB plug in the nook. Put your recovery SD in the nook and hold power for 5 seconds you should boot to the SD card. Flash the “repartition-boot_emmc-800mhz-stock.zip” if you want the 800 MHz stock kernel and reboot the nook. If you want the 1.1 GHz Kernel flashed then use “repartition-boot_emmc-1.1ghz-froyo_setboot.zip”.
Once you flash that go ahead and flash my rom just for ****s and giggles to see if you can boot into it. Enjoy. Let me know if I helped.
If this doesnt work you can always DD your way to a new partition. Example below but lets do what I put up top first.
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p1 of=/sdcard/xe.nook.color-froyo-v2.2-boot.img
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p6 of=/sdcard/xe.nook.color-froyo-v2.2-data.img
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p5 of=/sdcard/xe.nook.color-froyo-v2.2-system.img
Well, I'm already processing a return... But if I run across this problem on my new nook, I'll try that.

Return it and try CM7 normally installed to EMMC. Dont **** around with dual boots and all this other crap
When you get your new one in, and if you decide to put CM7 on EMMC, just leave it as CM7 alone.
Shame you sent it back before we could work it out, I was looking forward to trying to fix this - but I can imagine just how frustrated you have been with it and I don't blame you. Probably at the end of your rope and in your place, if I could have gotten B&N to exchange it, I would have too.
Because the Nook Color boots from the SD first, you can always just install whatever else you want to play with to a MicroSD card and run it that way.
Verygreens sd card prep thread is a fantastic first step in this regard. (click "SD Install" in my sig to get to it)
I personally still have my Nook Color stock on EMMC (with B&N official updates) and run my CM7 and other installs from the sdcard. Just make sure it is a SanDisk card and you'll be good to go. (also links in my sig to find out why SanDisk if you're curious)
The benefit to running from the sd-install, especially on possibly unstable ROMS, is that if it doesn't work you simply remove the card to get your device back - instead of having to run recovery on your device.
The latest stable release of CM7 is absolutely fantastic on the Nook Color, and i'd highly recommend it as your daily driver.

I wanted something on the emmc, and my microsd card is to slow to consider booting from it. I'll probably get a better one or just use my current one, and install honeycomb on that.

There's an image around these forums somewhere that lets you dual-boot Phiremod and HC preview on the SD (you just flash it to the SD and go).
It's always safer to play with SD new boots, since you won't hurt your EMMC installs.
With that really said -- the HC previews on the NC are ... not really worth playing. There's no hardware acceleration - so that are abysmally slow. Really bad. You'll try swiping the home screen and go "ugh, back to CM7".
Quite honestly, there's nothing better for us than CM7 on SD or EMMC. Phiremod is just candycoating on CM7 anyhow - and nobody's ever come up with a ROM for us that isn't just fiddling around with a base CM7 or a themed layer on top of it.
What we get from our CM7-Encore installs is pretty much what we want. Theme it all you like - but in reality, nothing else beats it.

[Q] Rooted Nook Color resets to stock firmware

I have an odd problem, My Nook is using one of the CM 10 nightly builds on a microsd card from about 3 weeks back and has an issue in which when it goes to sleep and i press the button to wake it, the default barnes and noble firmware boot screen comes on.Has anyone else seen this and how can I correct it?
I have not heard much about this happening on the Nook Color, but it happens all the time on the Nook HD/HD+. What happens is the kernel runs into an operation it does not like and it literally panics. When that happens it boots to bootloader, which then boots to stock. So there is something happening in the wake up process that causes a kernel panic. Could be something in the wifi driver. Are you leaving wifi on all the time? Could be your SD. What brand and class is it?

You could try turning it off during sleep. There is a setting for that in settings, wifi, menu, advanced and wifi sleep policy. If you don't need it on, then setting it to go off may help.

Updated Nook HD+ vs. Booting CM

I've been using a N2A card to run CM on a Nook HD+. Yesterday I rebooted into the native Nook operating system and upgraded with Google Play support.
The good part is that the apps I got from Google Play are available. I even loaded Nova Launcher to bypass the B&N home screen. It is working well so far. The only trivial problem is that at times (such as going into the settings menu) it does ask again which home screen is wanted.
It also seems faster and more stable. I get a lot of crashes with the N2A card. (The seller did send me a beta late last week which I haven't had a chance to test yet). However, this is not a fair comparison. I have lots of apps set up with the N2A card and very few when booting into the Nook and there is an excellent chance that the crashes come from some of my apps. (I don't mean this to be criticism of N2A--just looking at pluses and minuses of each way of using the tablet).
The negative side of using the new B&N software is that apps other than from the B&N store and Google Play remain blocked. The rare program which I purchased directly from the software writer, along with the few apps I got for free from Amazon which I actually use cannot easily be used unless repurchased from the Play store. I'm also finding that several apps which I got onto the N2A card are listed as not being available for the Nook thru the Play Store. Obviously the advantages of rooting are also lost, but this isn't as important to me on the tablet as on my phone (other than losing the ability to sideload apps).
I'm wondering about the experiences of others who load rooted ROM's from sdcards versus the new B&N software. Any differences in performance from running the operating system directly from the Nook as opposed to the sdcard, and any differences in stability?
If you want to be able to install third party apps in stock, go to my HD/HD+ CWM thread and flash the Extras zip. It enables unknown sources so those are not blocked.
N2A gets their ROMs here so expect them to act the same.
Battery life is much better with stock. It deep sleeps a lot when the screen is off.

There's no problem installing third party apps when booting with N2A. I'm comparing the updated stock OS which now allows apps from Google Play but unfortunately doesn't allow installation of other apps. If it allowed for the installation of other apps I might give up on booting from the SD to get a rooted tablet and run it as a stock Nook.

Look at my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature. And yes, you can do it without rooting. You don't flash with stock, you flash to stock using a bootable CWM card. You can even use the CWM on your N2A card (assuming they left it there when they copied the ROM from here).

With Nook's 2.1 ROM for the HD+, is one required to revert back to stock ROM, update to 2.1, then reapply the Hybrid fix? I'm considering a straight up stock ROM install in any event given the deep sleep, stability and increased responsiveness reported by some, then reinstall the Hybrid SD.
I've read through this and other leapinlar threads (all excellent and worth the read in their own right) and if the procedure is explained, for those running the Hybrid HD, I missed it.
As kudos, Leapinlar's clear explanations, instructions and flashes are at the head of the class, any ROM class, and I've flashed plenty on various smartphones and tablets. Barnes and Noble would do well indeed to make him an offer he can't refuse!
Then again I'd selfishly prefer he'd refuse and continue on XDA.
I'm running CM10 Hybrid SD on the HD+.
Thanks.

What about performance?
How does the stock updated Nook home compare to CM10 on SD? Which one is faster? Lag? other differences?
I'm interested to see the GPU performance on the HD+. Can anyone show me the HD+ running something like Blitz Buggy or Into The Dead on youtube? I'm very interested in this tablet, at the $179 pricepoint, but I need to know that it can perform first.

Sorry, I can't upload a clip but I have just downloaded and tested Buggy Blitz and it ran perfectly even with the graphics options turned up to max resolution. I saw no hint of frame rate slow down even when the screen was very busy. I hope that helps

I ended up going from Hybrid to straight stock, partly because I accidentally factory reset my CM10 install rather than stock when setting up the update, but also to escape the need to reboot back and forth. I like stock for magazines, but was doing everything else in CM10, and half the time when I picked up the tablet it would be on the wrong OS for what I wanted to do. The worst shortcoming of stock is lousy multitasking without ICS/JB Recent Apps. The stock Recent Apps only seems to register apps/media launched from the stock home screen, which I tried to like but ultimately found too dumb to live.
I accidentally turned off my HD+ when it was downloading the 2.1 update. Now when I boot into stock, I can't get the device to update again. In device information, it just shows the device is updating, but nothing happens. What can I do now to update to 2.1 via OTA?
Also, I'm running Hybrid cm10, is there a way that I can boot into stock without removing the sd card?

To boot into stock without removing the SD, when the cyanoboot logo comes up hold the n key, it will boot to stock.
Unfortunately when you interrupt the download or flash, it thinks it is completed and will not try again. I suggest you download my plain 2.1.0 stock zip from my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature. You should be able to flash that with the Hybrid CWM since the zip is hard coded to install to emmc. Do not do any wiping with it though, as it will wipe Hybrid instead of emmc. Just flash is all you need to do.

Running stock coming from CM10 on SD card. Have Apex installed and it is running smoothly. I am rooted with the Extras installed. One issue is that the Nook Video doesn't seem to want to play my UV movies. They start but just sit there in the buffering state. I got VUDU sideloaded so its not that huge of a deal.

I agree with you about stock being too limited. I have been running stock exclusively now since the 2.1 update was installed. I just wanted to see if I could get used to it. I have to admit that I like it a LOT more than the older versions. There are some highly annoying things about it though, which may send me back into the arms of CM10(x).
One of the things I don't like is the inconsistently placed back button, and the fact that it sometimes Disappears entirely as in the stock email app. The only way out of there is the nook (home) button. And the recently used apps is also not nice.
I'm not sure yet but I am getting close to deciding to go with 10.1 on emmc. Just giving myself some time with stock to see if there's anything I'll miss. I like the magazines on stock but haven't been using it for that, so I'm not sure I'd miss it. (I do have a couple print subscriptions that I also get on the nook, but I can probably live without)
I guess the only other thing I need to do is compare the stock nook reading app with the regular nook for android and see if I'd miss anything there. Also, does anybody know if there is a nook magazine reader for android that could act as a replacement for the one on stock?
I just find it amusing that on the same day we got this much more usable stock ROM, we also got the ability to completely remove it from our devices and replace it with CM on the emmc. I wouldn't be surprised if by this weekend I'm running straight cm10.1 on the emmc. Stock still has just a little too many annoyances for me to be completely happy with it. I don't want to "settle".

If your emmc boot partition is corrupted, the NC will not even attempt to turn on. But it should turn on and boot to a bootable CWM card (assuming your battery is charged). Have you tried that?

The fact that your PC makes noise when you plug in the USB cable makes me think it is on but screen off.
Have you used this same CWM SD to boot before, or is it burned fresh? If it is fresh, that could be why it is not booting to it. It has to be burned just right or it will not boot.
And, I guess I have to ask this. Are you sure it is a Nook Color rather than a Nook Tablet?

Returning to CM7 and Nook won't access Market

Hello XDA peeps.
I've had my Nook color for about 3+ years. Have had both my wife and mine running old versions of CM7 on the SD card without issue.
I recently dug mine out to set up for the kids (for a trip we're taking starting this weekend) and first installed CM10 (10.3 I think). loaded and was able to get apps running w/o issue but the poor old Nook and CM10 was so sluggish I felt it was just too much for this legacy device, so I reflashed to the CM7.2.0 [stable]
loaded just fine, but when I went to install GAPPS it installed fine, but will not allow me to access my account now.
no matter how many times I try, it tells me the password does not match for my account.
I know for a fact the password is the right one, and I can get on the Play store just fine on my Galaxy S3 using the same credentials.
I even reflashed the GAPPS to an older version and no luck.
Any thoughts? Really stuck here, since we're leaving Saturday morning and I want to have both Nooks up and running current versions of our boys fav games to pass the time. right now it has no app store, so it's pretty much a stripped Android tablet.

I actually have the CM10 on the root of the device. I thought I had put it on the SD card, but didn't. (just found this out by accidentally powering on the tablet w/o the card in it)
So, currently downloading the CM 10.2.1 update (from 10.1.3), and perhaps it will fix the sluggishness.
I have a third stock Nook that I have not touched in years that I'm going to flash on the SD card...see if I can't get it to CM7.2 w/o any issues.
but previously I had wiped the card twice and attempted to Reinstall CM7.2.
I think the fault lies in the steps I was following to burn the SD card.
Told me to add the gapps AFTER installing CM7
I was pretty sure in the past I put both on the same SD at the same time.
or it is possible the Google two-step verification/authorization is not compatible with the older Market app. I can get on the Play store just fine on CM10 (but it did have me open in the browser to verify the device).

I don't think CM10.2 is going to help. CM7 is the best for NC. I would wipe the internal CM10 you have on there and install CM7 to internal. Be sure to put the right gingerbread gapps on there too.

yes, thank you. I feel anything higher than CM7 just boggs the processor on these dated tablets. For a kids' tablet, it's just fine and will run most of their games/books and it remains snappy. CM10 just feels overloaded. It is sluggish and slow to respond. I'll try to get it moved back to CM7.
I've been trying to flash the other Nook, but after much effort, I have not been able to get it to boot into recovery.
I have the same card set-up, but I cannot get it to start with the card....constantly goes to the B&N root.

Thanks Leapinlar,
Still running into issues. now on BOTH Nooks.
I was pretty sure I remember something about an updated B&N ROM that was signaled with a Green sticker on the box, which the troublesome boot one has.
I am using the generic_sdcard_v1.3.img + cm-7.2.0-encore.zip + gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip all being burned via Terminal on Mac.
The only thing that has changed since I was dabbling with these in the past was the CM release.
I am not able to find my original bookmark of the tutorial I used to use (2+ years ago) so I think there might be a flaw in the instructions I'm following now. (for instance, the instructions I'm following now, the dd= command isn't proceeded by 'sudo' and without the sudo command, it errors out when trying to write the generic SD image to the disc (says disc is not available or locked).
gonna keep trying, because I want to get these up and working for our trip...we have 36+ hours of driving over the course of a week, so I know they'll get bored of looking at sights, reading books, watching DVDs, etc. Mainly for my own sanity, since I'll be driving.
**EDIT* i found the original tutorial I used years ago in my trove of bookmarks. It was the original GlassKeys tutorial. gonna give that a shot and report back with my success/errors.
Well, one thing, if you are going to use that old original image file you need to rename the CM zip to begin with update-. That will not help with the booting issue, but will make it so that image will recognize the CM zip.
I have an updated image zip in my updated instructions for NC SD installs linked in my signature.

Thanks. should have mentioned that I did rename the file to "update"
got my old CM10 to boot into Linux penguin and it seemed to be doing it's thing, after formatting the SD card following the GlassKeys instructions, but it is now booting to CM10 still by default and if I hold the "n" key for the boot menu on Cyanoboot and try to boot from SD card (normal or recovery) it just stays on that screen until I power it down.
as for the second, untouched Nook, I did the GlassKeys instructions to the SD card for that and it loaded to Penguin and went through all the install procedures, but now it still boots to the B&N emm setup screen.
wish I had never taken the other to CM10. now I have two Nooks that aren't acting properly.
thing that bugs me is the first one was running fine, just market wouldn't recognize my sign-in...now both are jacked.:silly:
SUCCESS!!!
So thank you goes out to leapinlar!!!
I dropped what I had been doing on my system as far as the files I was burning and read over all your FAQ and tutorial.
I downloaded the files in your how-to and had the tricky OE ROM flashed in a jiff!
The second one is installing now on the peguin screen and JUST now loaded to the CM7.2 bootloader screen.
Still used the GlassKeys instrucitons on how to burn via Terminal on OS X, but used your files (generic-sdcard-v1.3-CM7-9-10-10.1-10.2-11-largest-Rev8c.zip )
My original issue, I have found through all this, was that the Market wouldn't allow me to sign in...well that is an issue with the 2-step verification for my Google account I had activated (someone tried to hack my account, so I had it on). Once I turned it off, I was able to open the market and sign in.
Thanks again for your help leapinlar....check this one off!
Going to update both tonight with our boys' fav apps and games and get ready to hit the road first thing Sat morning!
