Alright, to start off, I apologize if there is a thread already on this (I searched but couldn't find anything).
I am a complete noob at rooting and don't know much about it. I plan on rooting my Nexus 7 in order to get Stickmount for additional storage on my device. My worry isn't about that, after I root it, how easy will it be to update it when a update for the Nexus 7 is released? I heard of stuff like flashing a rom with a updated software or flashing a modified firmware. Will tutorials be available for this when the time comes?

After you root, install OTA rootkeeper from the market. I assume it works with the Nexus 7, not sure why it wouldn't, but this keeps your device from losing root after an OTA. You can also install clockworkmod recovery and install any ROM you want which makes more sense considering this is a nexus device after all

i can confirm this works.
i tested out a few different scenarios last night.
booted up device, ran update, unlocked bootloader, put bad boot.img on
restored to factory, rooted, booted, used OTA Keeper, ran update, rebooted and root was gone. ran OTA Keeper to restore and BAM! root was back

I just looked up that app, it seems it's already integrated into SuperSu (that's the one I'm planning on getting). I just want to know if it's easy or not to upgrade the device once it's rooted.

"The application doesn't support original Superuser and not SuperSU for a very simple reason. The same feature OTA protection feature is already present in SuperSU."
That's what it said on the app overview section.
SuperSU Premium has it and it worked for me on my T-Mobile G2x when I updated to new OTA. Don't know if free version has it

I'm a noob to this type of stuff so if free SuperSU DOES have the OTA rootkeeper, does that mean I can update my device without any trouble?
If it doesn't, what methods can I take to update it without causing any damage?

OP: You should calm down. I mean that in the nicest way possible. This is a Nexus device. You can unlock your device anytime you want. You can simple re-root if you happen to lose root, there well always be a method. If you like to be on stock, you can just flash the updated stock firmware. Chances are someone will pack a nice stock rooted firmware within a couple hours of it being released, possibly before you even get a notification that there is a new update.
Sorry if I came out as panicky, it's just that I never did this before so I don't know what's right from wrong. Well I'm sure I'll get used to it eventually, thanks for the help.
I was interested, after reading the thread "are you satisfied with your TF300?" to see just the proportion of owners that unlocked their bootloader, as this could have implications with the speed of development. I also noticed how many users said they were not satisfied when their tablet was stock, but became more satisfied when it was running a custom ROM. It seems to me that some people are unsatisfied with the stock ROM, but don't wish to unlock the bootloader and void the warranty meaning they wont be able to send it back should there be a problem, or sell it on for maximum retail value.
Please choose one of the options above, thanks! (It would also be interesting to post your thoughts on how this affected your satisfaction with the tablet)

I cant use a device w/o root... Same day they released the unlock bootloader I unlocked my device! All my android phones are rooted and or unlocked the day I got it.

I have unlocked and installed the Hydro ROM (see the development section) . It is smoother for sure, no browserlag any more.
First I made sure to have root, so that I could backup my current applications and their settings with Titanium backup. Then I installed TWRM, the modern equivalent of Clock Work Mod, to backup the stock ROM. By taking these precautions the riscs of creating a mess are fairly reduced.
I also used the stock ROM for approximately 6 weeks, to be sure that the hardware was alright and that the chances of needing Asus support in the coming year were small.
Unlocked and rooted the day I got the tablet. Been happily running Hydro since its release.
Still locked bootloader here but rooted off course. I'm waiting for official jellybean
If you are completely satisfied with your device, then don't tinker with it by rooting and unlocking. However, if you unlock the device and install a custom recovery, then it becomes very difficult to brick the tf300. You can almost always come back to a working stock official rom with a custom recovery by simply flashing the software directly downloaded from the ASUS website. I have no regrets about unlocking my bootloader.

still on latest stock rom. since there will be an update to 4.1.1 i will not root or unlock (the bootloader) of the device. my girlfriend uses the tablet more intensively than me. rooting the device might cause a drop the WAF.
but i am planning to unlock/root as soon as asus stops developing for 300T.

I am unlocked and have used clean rom, hydro 4.3, cm9, skank for ics, aokp for ics, aokp for jb, cm10 and am currently running skank for jb. For me personally, my tab has run the fastest & smoothest with the custom roms w/ little, if any lag at all. With the new TWRP doing /boot backups as well as external sd support, it is so easy now to try all the roms and find one you like.
I'm not unlocked. Like some, I'm waiting for the 4.1 update to see what I think of it. I find it runs slower than my phone for some functions like updating apps, so I'm leaning to unlocking for a faster rom.
Mine is unlocked & rooted. And yet, I didn't found a rom that would satisfy me - just the stock one But maybe I will try the Clean ROM.

I have unlocked my TF300G bootloader using ASUS Unlocker V.7 and also root it with CWM as my recovery. I'm still on TW .40 official ROM but I have tweaked the build.prop a little bit.

Use wugfreshs toolkit to root. Rooting is great. When you root your device you need to unlock the bootloader . When the boot loader is unlocked, the warranty is void. But its a nexus device so its easy to lock it back up so that your warranty is back so don't worry about that. Yes, you can unroot, its as easy as flashing a stock rom. There are many benefits of rooting, I for one love no ads in Any apps, including games. I use an app called wifikill which allows me to kick any WiFi device at my house offline so that I can use ,more bandwidth than my siblings also, rooting opens up Roms and kernels. I downloaded and flashed trinity kernel. I am getting crazy battery life. Up to 6-10 hrs of ONSCREEN time which is ridiculous . ROOT YOU DEVIIICE!!!!

I couldn't agree more with what he said. Try wugfreshs toolkit, it's very simple and forward.

as people said, don't fix it if it ain't broke. unless you need more storage via stickmount. My is not rooted yet, maybe later.

One issue no one has brought up--some apps block rooted devices.
On the one hand, I've rooted/jailbroken all my previous devices, but I'm getting my N7 partly to watch video via Hulu+ and Time Warner. Neither of those work on my One X. Is that the case with this one? Has anyone found any workarounds? The threads for the signed versions of those two apps seem to have died.

Not enough information. What did you try, with the cable, did you load stickmount. Did you try to use it to mount the drive. what type of "pendrive" etc..

You have the stickmount app installed? USB must be formatted as FAT32....as the easiest solution. I think linux filesystems also work like ext3 but then you can't use the usb on a Windows machine without additional software.
For a while my USB didn't work, then I plugged in a mouse and that worked. Plugged the usb in again and it somehow started working.....weird eh?
silly question, always root. even if you dont need root today, tomorrow you might. and by that time you might have useful data that might get wiped when you do decide to root. anyways, its nice to have complete control over your device, if not for the performance side, then for the maintenance and customization side.
Its MoserBear 16 GB, FAT 32 formatted Pendrive, was trying to connect it via Galaxy S2 OTG and I also installed stickmount, when i click on mount it show there is no active mounts....

I rooted my phone and have decided it's not necessary on my N7 (yet). On my phone I just end up with a bunch more apps that get updated more frequently (like Titanium). The only issue I have with the N7 is real small text on some apps (like Amazon App store), will rooting fix this? With a 3rd party launcher you can make the N7 look and feel any way you want. I have 4gb left of 16, so I may root "someday" if I want to put more music on it.

The only one I can think of is Barclays Pingit - though not sure its compatible with N7 anyway.
Agree with previous comments - even if you dont need the benifits from rooting immediately its always best to root it at the start before you set it all up and have to wipe it all. I've learnt this the hard way before.
IMO the benefits of root overweight the downfalls, by far

On the Google Wallet FAQs it says that Google Wallet doesn't support rooted phones...can anyone confirm it does still work or..? Cause that's the main thing holding me back. Sorry if this has already been answered

is this happening to everyone? Wasn't going to install or even acknowledge that there was an update, because of the boot loader. But i plug it into a charger and 5 minutes later, it is like the phone is giving me the middle finger and accepting the update on it's own, without any question on if i want to or not.
My phone feels violated.

Alos please excuse my noobiness, this is my first android and coming from apple jailbreaks, I of coarse was not happy with closed phone policy so i was researching root options (which i know very little about since its my first android platform). Anyways long story short I rooted using motochopper exploit and got superuser. My questions are:
1. Is motochopper a real root or just tricks the phone into thinking its root?
2. Read about a bootloader hack soon to be released...what exactly is that and what will it give us? also what would be the difference between the motochopper "root" i have on my S4 now and the bootloader hack to be released?
3. Got Ram Manager but was unable to create backup recovery since clockwork mod is not yet released for S4, is that true or is there other ways to use Rom manager?
4. And the last but not least, what should a noob user like myself do, or how can we avoid bricking our phones now that we rooted (with motochopper) or will use the boot-loader hack?
5. is Samsung.Cloud Data Relay 2.1.4 responsible in anyways for forced updates?
Please if you can answer any or all questions I would be so grateful, as im sure many other noobs like myself would be. Please don't think I don't research the subject, its just when you are new to something, you always want to be sure. I am sure logic is to be used and common sense also as to not mess with software service or delete stuff you don't know as to avoid bricking but is there something else to watch out for?

unlocking the bootloader will allow us to flash an alternate recovery such as clockwork or twrp and then flash a rom. best bet to avoid a brick is to read everything you can about what you want to do. make sure you read any instructions several times before doing anything to make sure you understand.

thank you, will there be some custom roms developed for S4 once the bootloader is unlocked or is there some good once already?
also, i read that since AtT can force updates it might patch the bootloader unlock in the future, which processes do we have to freeze in order to avoid it on Att S4. I couldn't find any SDM processes as explained for other S4 carriers. Is it At&T Software Update V 42_1_1303_5_1, do you know by any chance?
I would imagine that roms will be developed & released, but can not say they definitely will.

Hi guys.
Confession: I'm really hesitatant about rooting my g2. I have a couple of reasons for doing so, like xposed and bigfaus split view mod along with greenify but I am afraid of not being able to return to stock in case anything should happen to my phone. I prefer a stock, working phone over a brick any day.
Any advice or recommendations are really appreciated and I won't hesitate pressing the thanks button

The benefits out weigh the drawbacks by quite a bit. There are more than several threads how to return to stock and unroot. The root process was by far the easiest I've done of the 8 devices I've done. I'd say if there is a legitimate reason to return for warranty work it'd pop up within a week or two.

If you only root, then it's a simple process to get back to stock. Installing a custom recovery is where you run into a more complicated process for restoring to stock. Fortunately, you only need to install a custom recovery if you plan on installing custom ROMs. It's not necessary if you only want to install apps that require root.

I've now had it for three weeks and there has been no bugs whatsoever. In fact, defect phones are really rare in Denmark as they undergo an even stricter control than in the US and the warranty is 2 years as opposed to one year elsewhere. That only covers defects that shows up over time though. I am well aware of the Go back to stock thread, but people seem to be getting it wrong despite the fact that they follow the guidelines.

I am familiar with rooting on a chinese tablet and using TWRP, but that is the only experience I have. I soft-bricked my tablet the second day I got it because i messed around with firmware and so on.
