Which One Do I Have? - Xoom General

I have a Verizon Xoom that is 3g/4g, though I only use it on wifi. Is it considered a wingray, stingray or what, because I wish to flash a new rom.

Anyone?

It's a Stingray. I also assume it says MZ602 as its model number?

With no data plan the best rom would be (dream MY android winray) and (the captain) - shield kernel...

It's stingray. That said, if you don't have a VZW data plan for it, you can flash wingray (WiFi-only) ROMs to it. Even if you decide to keep it stock, I would flash a wingray stock ROM to it as the latest wingray ROM is 4.1.2/Jelly Bean while the latest stingray ROM is 4.0.4/Ice Cream Sandwich.

:good: Thanks to Kamau54 and oldblue910 for this thread!
I've been tinkering with Linux (Mint, Fedora, Ubuntu) on Win7/Win8 PCs/laptops for the last 3-5 years and have been avoiding the "rooting" world...until the last week or so. My end goal is to root my Samsung Galaxy Note II and actually use extSDcard for more than a space filler.
I've been a good XDA Developers n00b  and have read and searched and read and slept and read ... about rooting a Xoom. Until today, however, I had only known my tablet was an MZ602 (U.S. Motorola Xoom with WiFi + Verizon 4G LTE) running ICS (4.0.4).
NOW, I can add the last piece to my puzzle before I free the Xoom from its OEM bondage: theh MZ602 is also "stingray".
Well...moment of triumph is over. I'm off to rootify my stingray! Reason for starting here: No warranty, no worries. Plus, the process of rooting Android is fairly similar...it's the actual steps that need to be practiced before going to my 1 y.o. e-brain!
========================================================================================
Current mobility: MZ602 (OEM) on Verizon; Samsung Galaxy Note II (OEM) on Verizon
ROOT EXPERIENCE: Bup-kiss
N00B Practice: MZ602 "100%" backup to Google Drive via Helium/Carbon AND to laptop using adb

Good luck!.. I've got an"Everest" mz601 but found the eos 4 roms pretty stable and easy to use..

Thanks for the response, rockhoond!
Once I'm done tinkering with the Xoom, I'm moving on to my Note 2. After that, I'm looking at something more "in depth" like the eos 4 ROMS to play with (program with, etc.).

Project Voodoo help

I just bought a nexus s 4g about a month ago. I came from a Samsung intercept (worst phone ever) . I'm familiar with Android, and his everything works. Going through the app store I stumbled upon voodoo control by super curio. Since I love music it only made since that I dl it. Now that I have it I have a few quick questions.
1. What's the best way to root my phone?
2. What's the best way to flash the kernel required for voodoo control?
3. Will I still receive OTA updates (such as ice cream sandwich) when rooted ?
4. Can I flash the kernel without root?
Thanks in advance feel free to answer any other questions you feel necessary.

theres a youtube video that shows you how to root your phone its by qbking or youtube it . that how i did mine then the flashinf a kernel is just like flashing a rom.....root your phone 1st then post back and you take it from there
and yes you NEED to be rooted to flash a kernal or flash anything
by the way imho the best kernal ive put on my ns4g is matrix
the best rom is anything cm based. or brainmasters miui with the new ics launcher

Search for the Nexus S4G One Click Root
2. What's the best way to flash the kernel required for voodoo control?
The best way to flash anything for any Android device is using Clockworkmod Recovery
3. Will I still receive OTA updates (such as ice cream sandwich) when rooted ?
You can either unroot to OTA update it or just flash a rooted ICS rom when it comes out
4. Can I flash the kernel without root?
No.

That should just about cover it.
It's a common myth that you need to root to flash a kernel. You do not. You can flash anything as long as your bootloader is unlocked.

No the issue is people misuse the term root and it becomes synonymous with unlocking bootloaders.

Short answer: no. If you're running CM you're on a completely different build than the version of Android/Touchwiz that ships on the device.
Longer answer: Both CM and the build that ships with the device are obviously both derived from the same source: Google's Android. So if Google fixes security problems in Android, then theoretically the CM guys should be packaging those into the next update of CM. If there is a security flaw specifically in the AT&T version of the phone, then it was probably caused by something custom that AT&T built into Android, in which case you won't get that update - but you wouldn't need it because you wouldn't have had the custom code that caused the flaw in the first place. Does that make sense?
Like eagle said, when on a custom ROM you are on your own and you don'T depend on Samsung or your carrier for updates, you depend on the developpers of the ROM. So you will probably get JB faster with CyanogenMod than with Samsung so it doesn't matter.

Bounty for metro pcs gs3 dev page

To request a new forum
Also, check my signature, the Galaxy Tab 2 root method, it's a generic debug-fs root that works on many different devices and may work for your met pcs gs3.
so I put the request in
how do you find out if its accepted and what's the process after if it is
Does the NEW device section magically appear under the forum list

Just keep looking for it I suppose. I requested my tablet be added but due to very few people actually owning it I doubt it'd ever make it. Did you give the debugfs a try? It should get you rooted.

Doesn't matter they may be foreign or crap here and there my point is doing the phone justice giving it room in the dev community the development is not about or for the carrier for metro its for the gs3 which this is the same phone same specs etc....just split the s3 thread for this like its already split in 4-5 other areas per carrier
The lg esteem was huge crap but it got roms root and hacks
Like to add the s3 on sprint is like putting a diamond ring on a pig atleast metro has 4g decent too and unlimited

Why don't you start dev? If they see more and more people using it and more dev they may be more inclined. I believe forums are created on a popularity basis.
You could try porting a VZW or other GS3 recovery to your device. It's actually very easy and no development skills required. Heck, I was able to get a GS3 cwm ported to my Galaxy Tab 2 by just extracting my tab's zImage, splitting gs3 cwm, replacing the gs3 zImage with my zImage, and repacking. Flashed and booted right up. Since the hardware is generally teh same, the only thing you *should* have to do is inject your kernel.
You could probably easily get cm10 or aosp to port also.
Help me do this
I'm still bit confused if u read my other posts under xda android dev and hacks I posted what I want to attempt
I figures vzw gs3 Rom would be best shot since metro and vzw are both cdma both devices are same specs hardware
I wanted to dload a stock vzw gs3 4.0.4 Rom remove its kernel and modem/radio and dump metros stock kernel and modem into it and attempt to flash
but I know nothing about doing this either all from my device itself or from a Pc I am rooted I do have twrp recovery and root explorer but root explorer only allows you to tamper with the actual installed Rom your running how would I hack the downloaded vzw gs3 Rom of choice without getting fancy and using android workshop tools
what's really the Protocol to do just what I want

Here is Clockworkmod 6.0.1.5 if you want that. And here is the official link for the latest official CM 10 nightly for your device straight from the get.cm servers itself.
i tried that cm10 nightly all i got was bootloop after install
does it have to be with cwm or can it be with twrp recovery
i know how to flash roms know how to wipe what needs to be wiped prior to install
It still boots to the cyanogen logo then reboots completely

Yes for CM 10 flash jelly bean gapps zip here is the link for that . As a general rule only flash ICS gapps with CM 9, gingerbread gapps with CM 7, jelly bean gapps with CM 10, etc. As far as the fixapn zip, only flash that if you are having network and data problems, or your not able to make or receive SMS/MMS. Hope this helps .
I can get the SGS III running on metro, given that an S3 was donated. It's not too difficult if you reprogram phones daily, and that's what I do. Because of this, I don't have any competition from a business point of view. I'd provide the service to myself for getting it working. Right off the bat I can get:
Talk, Text, MMS, and 1x Internet Working with little to no effort. 3G varies on location, but I can take a crack at it too. If this bounty is serious, just donate me an S3, I'll do the legwork, and I will not be accepting any form of donations, other than the donated S3, I'm good with that.
Cheers.
Edit: If someone is serious about this bounty, and willing to donate, you need to make sure you donate a GS3 using CDMA, (No Sim Card) Not GSM. It can be with a BAD esn so you won't pay an arm and a leg for donation.
Verizon and Sprint GSIII use CDMA, I believe the international version is CDMA & GSM.
Double Edit: I can cook up a few roms as well, MIUI, AOKP, and Custom Stock Rom.

It's not a scam, its an offer to something I know I can do. Did you see the programming guide topic I made? Every other phone followed it and copy-pasted my tut. Bounties offer amounts higher than an SGS 3 is worth. I'm not asking for a new SGS3 with custom design and preference in size, I'm only specifying the carriers that share the same cdma technology as metro, I even specified to get a bad esn one as that's used and not able to be activated with the main carriers. If the bounty is as serious as I am, I can do it, given that the bounty is real. I'm not accepting bounties, just a used sgs3 for me to work on, I'm going to pay for my own metro services in order to program and test the phone and build some roms together for it. If anything, this would be costing me, not anyone else. I enjoy doing what I do, and I have the tools to work with. As for the "scoring a free sgs3" I'm accepting that as payment for my time invested into this fun project. I do have a job outside of XDA, and getting my clients work done and doing this on my time off deserves at least some sort of recompense. I'm not asking for much. I'm offering a service and asking for something in return to start with. If I wanted an SGS3, i'd buy it myself, but I don't need it, I'm fine with my Epic 4G running CM10. This is an offer, not a demand. I'm sorry you "smelled" a scam, by no means are you being held at gunpoint in demand for my time. Nothing is free, and even then, I like to help for little or close to nothing. If this bounty isn't serious, I suggest a mod close this thread. But the talent is out there.

Just bought a xoom! (advice needed)

Hey guys,
Just bought a xoom (wifi, told it's an mz604?). I'm in the UK but the previous owner has made it get the us 4.1.2 update?
Anyway, I absolutely love it. Best birthday gift to myself by far. But, I enjoy a good tinker with android, so I was wondering if you guys can suggest what to do with this xoom? I've read the cm10 is great on here, but at the moment I don't even know how to check if my bootloader is locked (I feel like a noob all over again).
There's only one issue I've had so far which is that I get some serious over scan when using hdmi, and my tv won't allow me to just scan like my other tv :/
So please, any advice or tips etc you have will be gladly recieved

ROM choices...
First off, congrats on your Xoom tablet purchase... As for ROM choices I would suggest either using Team EOS 4 or CM10 ROMs both provide many useful features and are updated regularly. I am personally using EOS but my phone has CM10 on it so I can say that both are great software. My best advice would be to search this great site under the Xoom Development section and start reading some of the posts. You will find great advice and answers to your questions. Enjoy.
I would assume if its got 4.1.2 it was GEDified, which would have meant unlocking the bootloader to install the US images which then allows you to get updates from Google....
The old owner *may* have relocked the bootloader after doing this mind you - I never bothered when I did mine....
tbh, I'm still a real novice so unsure of a way to tell if the bootloader will be locked, but had a google search and the following came back:
"You could try flashing a custom recovery to it. If it works, then your bootloader is unlocked".
For a recovery, I would recommend the latest version of TWRP found in the Development thread. That also contains an img version that you can try to flash through fastboot....
For ROMS, there's EOS, CM10, a new 4.2.1 and Codename Android.... I've only tried EOS so can't comment on any of the others (latest nightlies for EOS are also 4.2.1, but I'm currently running their last 4.1.2 rom, nightly 155).
Hope this helps.....
Hey guys Thanks for the replies, I have been reading but just thought I'd ask some direct questions
Think I just want to gain root atm and look into other Roms over the weekend. Are there any root methods that are none destructive and fast?

New to the tab 10.1 few questions

So I got this tab from a friend for free and need to make it better.
First I need to figure out the teems I'm reading in development. I see things like p4 and p4wifi. According to my settings this is a GT-P7510. Does that = a p4wifi?
Second I know how to root (have a GS3) but not sure which rom is the one I want. I'm thinking of going to JB, but I've read something about updating the boot loader. I haven't seen any threads on that though.
Any help you could give would be great.
