[Q] GPS stays on even when location access off? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello.
Is it normal for the GPS to be on when I have turned off location access (both GPS and WiFi)? Are apps able to override this system setting?
I noticed that sometimes even though I have this off, GPS symbol stays in the status bar for hours. Killing suspected apps didn't help. In battery I see 'fused location' using my GPS.
Please see the screenshot.
How do I troubleshoot this?
Thanks,

Something draining my battery!!

All of a sudden my battery is draining overnight.
I installed a trial of GPS Tuner the other day and wondered if it's anything to do with it.
I know the gps drains battery but I only used app for about five mins and then shut it (not minimized)
I wonder if GPS receiver is still active after app shuts down.
Does anyone know if there is an app or registry tweak to make sure GPS is off when not needed by an application? Or is there a way to turn it on/off manually?
Thanks
Rog
Normally the gps receiver is turned off, when no application is need. There is a registry tweak to change the time interval after which the the gps is turend off, but the standard value of 500ms should be ok.
Personally I'm using GPSGate, which changes the color of the system tray depending on the status of the gps receiver.
But if you shut down any application that uses gps, it shouldn't be enabled any more.
You should check the processes that are running, maybe it is something different than the gps.

[Q] Power Control

Hi,
I am looking for a tool to dissable Standby on a temorary basis.
For example... if I leave "GPS status" the device shuts down GPS and goes into standby.
I would like to dissable standby for some applications and turn the display of instead.
Maybe someone has a different idea but in OSM i can turn on logging and leave the application running in the background. GPS does not get dissabled if I turn on logging and it looks like it also runs in the background if I turn the device into standby.
Does someone have an idea how to manage that?
Last but not least.. I am looking for a good ENMEA-logger which also displays the signal strengh of each sattelite.
Thanks in advance!

[Q] Android lost drains battery and keeps GPS on

Hi guys,
I started to use android lost, it has some cool features, the problem is it drains my battery like crazy.
Its the main cause for my battery decreasing and the GPS is always on but for some reason there is no indication of it in the notification bar - there the GPS is off.
I tried to remove location access for the application but the GPS remain turned on.
Thanks in advance.
I had this issue too, the gps bug, haven't had it since 4.2.2, when I disabled gps, android would report it running, you have to reboot, the indicator and setting was switched to off, maybe turning it on/off several times?, I will try if it comes back

GPS turns on by itself?

I got my 6p last week and it's been running great until this afternoon. It got warm and the battery level drops by 70's at around 10am to low 30's at 4pm; during that time it was mostly on airplane mode with all sync/bluetooth/gps turned off.
When I checked the battery history it says that the GPS has been on for over 7 hours. I certainly did not turn on the gps myself (I turned off location), and I do NOT have smart lock.
Question: How can I determine which apps/processes turn on the GPS?
I also notice that "Miscellanenous" is responsible for 29% of the battery use.
Question: What the heck is that? How can I turn it off?
Thanks!
Try disabling the GPS in settings.
I believe your issue stems from Wifi not GPS, anyhow try this - turn off WiFi scanning, and turn off the option to continuously scan for more accurate information. I had similar issues before I turned this off, my battery used to drain a lot on Wifi.

Thanks! Where do I find these options for turning off wifi scanning & for (not) continuously scanning for more accurate info?
Under wifi-->advanced wifi I already set "keep wifi on only when plugged in". I did turn on "notify whenever a public network is available" --- is that what you meant by "wifi scanning"? But I can't find anything about "scanning for more accurate info" (I already turned off location and smart lock).
Thanks!
EDIT: I just realized something: The compass on my 6p has not been working properly (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/help/compass-t3243394). This morning I spent a good 10 min calibrating the compass by doing the figure 8 dance etc. It didn't fix the compass, but the time where I began the figure 8 dance roughly coincide with the time where the GPS was reported to be turned on... The plot thickens...

Are you even using this device or android M or you just giving advice from android kit kat? There no longer is "turn on/off scanning" in android M.

There is no plot. Just find which app runs in the background and continuously asks for location. Problem solved.

Wifi bug on 6.0.1

I have tmobile and am on 6.0.1.
I have Google now on, location history on, location on device only or on high accuracy, with scanning off in wifi settings unless plugged in.
Even if I physically turn my wifi off my wifi bar is constantly active in my battery graph. The only thing that will turn it off is airplane mode. The only reason this bugs me is wifi constantly shows up as draining the battery.
Any ideas? Is this a bug with 6.0.1?

First I've read of this. Something is definitely buggy with your software. I would back up your SD and flash the 6.0.1 factory image then set up device as new when entering account info.
