4.2.1 Update Discussions, issues and other info - Transformer TF300T General

Thought I'd start new thread for 4.2.1 Update Discussions, issues and other info
So first thing:
I have found out on 4.2.1 if you do fastboot command
Code:
fastboot -i 0x0b05 getvar all
The "bootloader" "recovery" & "boot" partitions are now in basic format, which means the fastboot format command will no longer work on these partitions as it is not a recognized format in fastboot, I never did try this on 4.1.1 when these partitions where in emmc format but believed it would have worked - anyone confirm this?
Code:
C:\android-sdk\platform-tools>fastboot -i 0x0b05 getvar all
(bootloader) version-bootloader: 1.0
(bootloader) version-baseband: 2.0

(bootloader) partition-type:userdata: ext4
all:
finished. total time: 0.105s
Not sure what this means as I cannot find any info on basic format & android
Anyone got any info on this?

Does any one HDMI issues after the 4.2.1? ( Only reply if you confirmed having a working hdmi on 4.1)

HDMI worked great on 4.1 and still works great on 4.2. Don't like the black sidebars, but I can live with it. Locked and unrooted.

More info:
Also one thing you might notice with 4.2.1 is that the developer options is now hidden in settings, to un-hide go to settings and click on about tablet and then on build number click 7 times, a count down will appear as you go & then you will have developer options again. :good:

Can you explain what you mean by black sidebars? Some have reported limited resolution for HDMI out on 4.2.1. Since the main reason for my acquisition of this particular tablet was the HDMI out, I don't want to lose what I have on 4.1.1 with an update. This is my main reason for waiting to do the update.

If you use HDMI output for watching movies stay with 4.1.
4.2 update has completely broken HDMI output, it's impossible to have a real fullscreen on a 16:9 TV, now I have black sidebars and for some apps the bottom bar remain always visible, for me it's almost impossible to watch any multimedia on TV with HDMI.
The problem is shared with Nexus 10, I've already posted this link in Q&A forum, but I repost it here hope that it may be helpful:

I've played a 720p movie and it was outputted at 720p to the TV, so in my case the resolution is correct, at least for HD movies. Didn't test with full HD though. The issue is that, as the above poster mentioned, the tablet outputs at a 16:10 ratio, so on a 16:9 TV you'll have black bars on each side of the TV screen. I can also confirm that the bottom bar is visible with almost all apps I've tested. Some people reported some sound output problems (as in no sound at all), but I have none. I've found out that you cannot set the sound volume once you've connected the HDMI cable to the tablet. So, rise the volume on the tablet before connecting the HDMI cable, otherwise it will output at zero volume and you'll have no sound on the TV.

I can't get the camera to come up on the lock screen without entering my pin first...

They seem equally fast in my case. But I also use Nova.
I find it annoying that the Panorama mode of the camera can work only if I start the camera with the tablet in horizontal orientation. If I start it while the camera is held vertically, I'll get only a black screen.

Aside from HDMI my other issues with 4.2 have been
1. Bluetooth audio lag in games still there
2. Bluetooth controllers like PS3 no longer recognized
3. When selecting recent apps the screen goes black instead of just fading when using Multi-picture live wallpaper
Otherwise I really like this update
It feels real smooth after Root and Lagfix.
Games run well nothing like 4.1.1. Stock. Shadowgun runs well even on balanced mode.
I've gotten used to the 4.2 launcher tho I use Apex launcher in Tablet mode to bridge the gap. (Cause who wants to feel like their using a big ass phone right).
It seems like the core I/O has been stepped up I'm not a speed test guy but I think the improvements are noticeable.
Coming from Hydro-7 with Unters Kernel where everything worked does feel like I'm going backwards a bit. The deciding factor for the switch was the hope that bluetooth audio lag in games had been corrected which it isnt. Plus now no PS3 controller support? WTF? but the improvements keep me holding on.
Bottomline: If you use you tablet as a straight up table with no bluetooth or HDMI accessories its great. My hope is that when the kernal is released our amazing devs can fill in the missing pieces maybe from the 4.2.2 update.

A few days later into 4.2.1, I am pretty satisfied with the update. There is an appreciable performance increase (or should I say: smoothness) with switching between applications and the new 'recent apps' menu. I now feel less nervous with using multiple applications, and I do not feel a need for a task manager/killer. I also like the fact that YouTube doesn't forget the position I paused the last video, after I've left it for a while.
The 4.2.1 launcher is a step back, seems to use more screen space (the extra top bar) and less features (the ASUS pop-up panel is missing). I use the previous 4.1.1 style launcher.
With the next update (4.2.2?), which will hopefully iron things out, I am going to do a device reset to start again fresh and maybe get even more performance.
Thanks to ASUS for being good with updates.

system bar lock
Hi!
My issue with this version:
When i use the system bar lock and i want to unlock it i am asked for a password. I'm sure that this never happened at 4.1 and i have no idea where i can set the password. Is this a problem to anyone else?

Considering the current status of ROMs and 4.2.1, is there anything I can do to improve smoothness and response with my tablet on stock 4.2.1, unlocked, rooted? Or do I just need to be patient until some ROMs start filtering through?

Some background first...
I was unlocked and rooted running TWRP and Clean rom. I did a complete system wipe, right down to the internal memory via TWRP and installed the zip straight from asus. I then installed the patched TWRP for 4.2.1, and installed superuser for root.
I have made no changes to the system at all. Everything seems to be running smoother than with 4.1. I must say I'm so glad asus left the old launch/UI in there, i tried the 4.2 UI and HATE it.
I have found only one bug. I used my tablet to type large fields of text into form fields on a webpage for my job. I probably type about 2 hours per day on my TF300t using the dock. I never had the first problem before, but now, if I'm in the stock browser, and I start typing, hit backspace, type some more, and hit backspace a second time, the browser simply disappears, no FC, no anything. I can open it back up, try again, and it will crash again the second type i hit backspace. Happens every single time, 100% repeatable. I have cleared cache, i have rebooted, doesn't mater. And it only happens on this particular website i use for my job. For a workaround, i can use any other browser, chrome, firefox, dolphin, etc, all work fine and don't have this problem. Very very strange.
Tonight, i will test this issue without the keyboard dock and see what happens.

I also experienced this issue on stock 4.2.1 after pressing backspace twice, at the time I was just having a play around with the new update so have not looked into it yet. I also noticed two other issues with stock browser, every now and then when I open the browser and select a text box to type in the dock & on-screen keyboard will just not type - a close & reopen seems to fix this. 2nd issue sometimes after typing and then trying to select text with long press or shift key, I cannot select any text.

2.2 Review

*** True Story ***
I am a member on Dell's community forum and have watched Dell's mouthpiece, Amy-B, post the lies and put up the smoke and mirrors regarding this for a while now. When she first announced that the update would begin on 11/15, I paid closer attention. By the end of the week when there was no update, I commented that users may have a potential class action suit. With that, I got a scathing email from Dell saying I violated their terms of use, some left handed subtle threats, and my post was deleted. I still laugh about that.
End True Story, my ongoing review below
I put 2.2 on last night and played with it for a little while before bed, then really started putting it to the test today. here's what's happened until now.
First, when I applied the update, it kept a lot of previous settings and applications rather than clean wiping. It also bypassed forcing me to login to google account, so when I tried to use the market, it couldn't. With that, I used my credentials to login to my google account and immediately started having some google calendar syncing error. It became a loop, each time asking me to report it, then asking me to force close the app, and then over and over the same thing. So I rebooted the streak, and it came up with the same exact issue not allowing me to do anything with it. I had to pull the battery to shut it down this time and when I get it all together to power up, I simply held the up/down volume keys and told it to do a factory reset.
The rom cooks itself into the streak as the factory install and 2.2 came up on the next boot, this time asking for google credentials. It worked that time, and I was ready to put the phone through it's motions.
Issues I've found
1. Voice Dialer via Bluetooth crashes each time I try to use it. It crashes to the point that it tells me to restart my phone. This is without fail.
2. swiping to unlock the phone, or pattern unlock are flaky. it will start then stop as if I've taken my finger off. I have to do it multiple times and crazy ways to make it work. Pattern lock same thing. Especially after coming out of my pocket... as if the heat from my body makes my finger not be recognized on the whole screen. This build makes the touchscreen no longer responsive as it was in 1.6... update, I've tested this over and over and over. yes, it seems to be the temperature, because if I blow on the screen to cool it, or something similar, the screen becomes instantly responsive to my touch. I never had this problem with 1.6 regardless of when I pulled it out of my pocket.
3. sometimes, changing screens gets choppy or laggy.
4. No widget bar or tray/drawer that allows you to turn BT or Wifi on or off. You have to get something from the market to do this (updated, this is available as a widget, I should open my eyes a bit)
5. Can't change the number of screens; can't add or subtract screens, stages, rooms, or whatever you choose to call it. You're stuck with 7, the center one being the default.
6. Multiple FC's for variety of reasons, many are while simply browsing the market. With that Microsoft-esque error reporting thing always popping up, I think they anticipated feeding garbage to the masses.
7. Have tried a few alternate launchers. Some are better than others, more functional etc.. .but no matter how weak an alternate launcher appears to be, they pretty much ALL beat StageUI
Likes
1. Have always liked the live wallpapers that we were introduced to in 2.1
2. landscape mode rights itself regardless of which side is facing up. could be a caveat since it puts the home/back/menu buttons upside down on the left instead of right with the hard buttons on the bottom, but still kind of cool nonetheless.
4. Support for Exchange is native and doesn't require additional software/applications.
the long and the short of it.. Dell is useless as an OS developer/tweaker and StageUI blows.
Samsung hit the homerun with it on its Galaxy S series. I was just at best buy, and the Galaxy Tab is pretty sweet but the price tag is ridiculous. Comparing 2.1 of my Vibrant with 2.2 on my streak, the Vibrant wins. no contest.
Day one of having the new 2.2 update on there and it's clear that this OS needs some patching already. I can only imagine what the people on O2 in the UK had to go through with their 2.1 fiasco
more to follow...
Here's a couple of things that I like in this build but before I list the items I wanted to address the comment you made about being able to turn of BT, wi-fi, GPS, brightness, etc. Under apps you can select Power Control and that will give you those options in a form of a widget. You do, however, will have to delete one of the Stage widgets to free up the room. Or you can just open the widget via apps. For my use, I currently prefer a different launcher than Stage. I am using the LauncherPro but there are a lot of other free choices like ADW, Zeam and so on.
Here are the things I like about this build:
1. Ability to hang up the call by pressing the power button ( you have to go to Settings-Accessibility-then check the mark for that option)
2. Radio feature - is absolutely great. The thing I don't like is the web ad that seems to pop every time I start listening to a station. If anyone knows how to turn/block that pop-up you would make me very happy )
3. Keyboard is awesome. Love the size, the options to switch to symbols, just love it. Haven't messed with SWYPE but I love the Andriod KB right now.
4. Flash - yes it works and it works well.
5. Speed - significantly faster. Whether navigating or downloading. Wi-fi speeds are faster than 1.6 or 2.1 I use to have.
6. Bluetooth volume is louder. This one was high on my priority list.
7. Music widget - looks nice and clean.
8. Camera works fine. I don't see an option for 720p though.
9. Security is beefed up by adding the option for PIN or password on top of the normal sliding lock. My slider works without any issues. But I prefer the pattern lock which also works great.
10. Haptic feedback can't be completely turned off, or you can turn off certain features alone like keyboard. I have mine off so the three main buttons don't vibrate any more. I don't think that option was available in the previous builds but I could be wrong.
These are the ones that I can think of right off the bat. I may add more as I remember them.

Long press home, then under widgets, then power control... thanks tons. that's what I was looking for.
So my quick review:
The good:
Loving the out-of-the-box Exchange support. Yay. Mobile e-mail/calendar/contacts without having to use Touchdown and the hassle of 'pushing' Touchdown contacts to the phone's contacts.
w00t. Ability to grab requiring apps from the market which require 2.x.
2.x features like portrait home screen, better multi-touch, etc.
The bad:
The Stage UI is just lame. Giving it a few days before I toss it in the bin.
I miss the old video playing app. I dunno what it was called, but there isn't even a shortcut for the new one. I installed ASTRO File Manager, browsed to my video directory and the file launched with some less-than-basic video player. What I liked about the old one was the order-by-date view which I have become used to but isn't the end of the world, the resume where you left off feature, and the delete from within the app feature. I guess Rock Player is the video player most people seem to be recommending, so I hope it has this.
For all its faults, I liked the old keyboard. I suspect it's still there, but I have yet to look. Using 2 (To/two/too) and 4 (For/four), etc in txt/IM/tweets now takes extra keypresses.
I never really knew how handy the Dell notification area was for 1.6. I'd turn off the cellular data and run Wi-Fi only, with just a couple of presses and it wouldn't interrupt the app I was in. Now I have to go to the home screen, press the menu button, and that's only to turn off wireless. I have yet to find the equivalent enable/disable for 3G.
Yet to check:
I've found the Streak's camera has taken pretty lame photos. I'm not photophile, but our 5 year old, 4MP camera takes better photos than the Streak. I've had the Streak set to the best quality (Lowest compression or whatever it was) and if you zoom in on a picture while viewing on a PC, it gets pixelated very quickly, while our 4MP pics are much nicer looking and they are twice the file size (4MP pic twice the file size of a 5MP pic?), so I'm interpreted this as 'The Streak takes crappy pics'. Been waiting to see what, if anything, the upgrade to 2.2 does for this.
So I guess it seems to lack polish, BUT, I think the reason for this is because it's actually near-to-bare Android, so I'm not going to criticise the roughness when the other option is more polish (Which one may or may not like) from Dell that means OS updates take 6+ months. I'm sure I'll be able to overcome anything I'm not liking with apps or through tweaking some options somewhere. Isn't this why we have Android?
But yeah. Stage is coming off pretty quick I suspect.
PS - You all might laugh: http://i.imgur.com/ULMLx.png
This build was far too laggy for my tastes. 1.6 was faster on some of the processes for me. I'm happily back on DJ Steve's build which is soooo much faster and has virtually the same features.

Something I'm surprised is:
2.2 doesn't have separate sounds for incoming:
E-mail
Texts
Reminders
...I dunno if iOS does, but my old Windows Mobile device did. I'd like a different sounds for these events, as I'll respond to them differently. Now I don't know if it's a calendar reminder which I can't ignore, a text which I might ignore or an e-mail that I can ignore...

Try "Quick Settings" which puts an icon in your status bar so when in an app, just drag down the status bar click on it and all your settings are there. Or, try "QuickDesk". Not sure if this is out of beta yet but its also an awesome app for doing exactly what you are talking about.....and much more.

Yes the led can work as a flashlight. I used the N1 Torch app and it worked fine.
Yes it does have wifi tethering.
I really miss the 1.6 menu bar/notification bar. Stage blows compared to the old ui. The swype keyboard is great. I have mixed feelings about the update mainly because of the ui changes.

Alright. Others have answered, but I'll pass on what I know. If you're talking Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) not talking to an Exchange server, a la Hotmail, I'm getting a "cannot connect to server" error... My EAS to work's Exchange is working flawlessly though.
And USB/Wi-fi tethering are working grand. I'm tethered by Wi-fi as I write this, so I can pass my 3G USB modem on to a colleague. w00t.
I am a little concerned about battery life. I haven't done that much with the phone today, unlike a normal day where I might squeeze in a few calls, texts, tweets, bit of web browsing, and three+ hours of video and have the battery at 20% at the end of the day. I'm at 20% left now, and I haven't done any of those things.
thnx
have you tried hotmail through POP3 ? it worked with k9 client.
what i meant is activesync on windows 7 64bit with office 2010 32bit.
yeah batterylife concerns me also. i have a habit of draining these in godspeed (A)

[Info] What the Stock Honeycomb 3.2 modified

I had update EeePad to Honeycomb 3.2,
and test some issues in 3.1.
Every thing is so fast now.
I can sure some bugs had been fixed :
1. 90 and 180 degree in home screen is such smooth now
2. Music beta idle when screen off does not appear
3. Stock browser does not show white block when scrolling
4. Youtube plugin works well in stock browser (just testing 720P ...)
5. WEBSTORAGE UI update
6. Some apps are out of screen when scaling up
7. Stock weather widget shows the last update time (but it is real ugly ...)
8. Browser input lag is STILL there ~
so on...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After charging the battery to FULL in office, I went home.
Until now, my EeePad walked through two states :
1. Suspend mode -> 2 hrs 30min (just screen off)
battery : 100% -> 100%
2. Crazy running -> 2 hrs 20min (web, youtube, music, MV, drama, RSS, FB, ...)
battery : 100% -> 83%
Both these two states are with wifi on.
Seems that 8 hrs continue working is possible for 3.2.

I'd love to know the Splashtop (MyCloud) and PressReader versions. Also is the text selection bug in the stock browser resolved? And are the physical SD and MicroSD cards still writeable?
the splashtop is running the same old version unfortunatey, 1.00.something
one more different thing is the mouse cursor is now a circe instead of the pointer,
and you can do scroll and pinch to zoom using the trackpad now,
its not quite smooth as i like it to be tho
sometimes the machine confuses the two action so becomes a big more laggy

The exact version number is quite important. Asus' Splashtop builds don't match the version numbering of the retail builds. They've made significant changes in past Asus releases with very modest version number changes.
Can you please confirm is the version number still v1.0.0.10-4 r8520? That's the build supplied with the latest OTA patch two weeks ago.
just updated to TW 3.2 and wanted to share for all dock owners
Theres a new "pointer" feature when using the trackpad; basically a circle pointer is on the screen instead of the arrow cursor
Basically it functions the same but gives more area to click?
Also when scrolling webpages with the trackpad, they inverted the direction so moving 2 fingers down now scrolls up and 2 fingers up scrolls down; which ANNOYS me so much, hope they revert it back.
EDIT: PINCH TO ZOOM added on trackpad
However its hard to scroll the pad when the trackpad keeps thinking you want to pinch to zoom
EDIT 2: Scrolling on trackpad better if you use two fingers as close to each other, further apart would make the trackpad recognize as pinch to zoom
that sucks

Gah why can't they just make these things user-configurable? I can 100% guarantee I will not be able to get my head around that, because it is the exact opposite of my laptop touchpad.
youtube app search box bug while playing video still exists, i.e pressing space while in search box while in video playing menu highlights the the other featured videos instead
Hey there,
what about "Battery usage data" in "about tablet"? Is it still not available?
Thanks for info about OTA, will be waiting patiently

To be honest, i think it is more intuitive now because now it scrolls in the same way you would scroll on the tablet screen. But then, i didn't own a laptop to confuse me Just wanted to say i can see why they did revert it.

Yeah, I can certainly understand that some folks prefer it that way. As I said a couple of months back, it's a bit like mouse look in gaming, though. It's something you can't relearn. I started off in gaming with flight simulation, and I learned that forward on the yoke means descend, backwards means climb. I've tried over and over for years to play first person shooters with the opposite directions, but I just can't do it -- the flight sims built something in my brain that expects inverted look.
And that is why Asus shouldn't be forcing a decision like this on us. Some folks will want the scrolling one way, some the other, and for most, they'll never be able to learn to change. Asus needs to make this a user option, and let the user decide what works, because otherwise they're going to have a significant proportion of their users unable to scroll with the touchpad, and feeling like they've been let down.

It's not available for anybody else, so I don't think it's available for you either. My guess is you're not aware what folks are talking about.
We're not talking about the screen where you get an indication of battery consumption alongside hardware status (battery charging, gps use, wifi use, etc.)
On the screen *before* that one, you should get an indication of battery life alongside which individual apps were running, so you can see which apps are using the battery life up.
That works on other tablets. It doesn't (and never has) on the Transformer.

[Q] tablet mode for KitKat?

Hello,
I've been looking for tablet mode for the new kit kat update but I can't seem to find anything online is there a way to do this Straight from the update? If not, can you recommend a launcher?
Thanks
Apex should have tablet mode. Otherwise I think tablet mode has not been a part of android since 4.2 (someone correct me if I'm wrong), so tablets modes in 4.2+ roms were hacks made by people, it wasn't just 'enabled', like it was in 4.1.
Here are the details of my new Samsung tablet running 4.3. I had a Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 previously, but it ran Honeycomb, which I believe was exclusively for tablets. My new tablet is actually considered a 10.1" Note.

Oddly enough, I seemed to maintain some tablet functionality when I only did the OTA and patches for KitKat (coming off a custom 4.3 rom but I've rolled back somewhat) Now that I've done a fresh install based on KRT16* image & deep clean wiped everything first, it's gone. Regained wasted junk space from various apps & data since te 4.2 days.
Most annoying is that Google Search bar on the top, it's fine until it goes horizontal as in tablet mode, it's then sitting on top - semi transparently on top of the top row of apps on the home screen. It was off to the left side of the screen - guess we will have to wait for our XDA developers here to come around to patch & mod the framework or whatever.
Already turned off Google Now's Hot Word under Search so it's good for the battery - should be an easy fix for it.
I don't know exactly how you did the OTA because for OTA to pass you need to be completely stock, no files modified or removed, but you seem like you know what you're doing.
About the google search bar: use Nova or Apex, they are the same as google stock, except better. I don't have any search bar on top, I do have one on left side (portrait) when I tilt the tablet into landscape, so it doesn't take much space. Even so, I've never ever used the google search or voice widget, I'm so used to opening browser and searching that I don't even use physical search key on Windows Phone, I press start, open browser and search from there.

Don't upgrade from 4.4.4 to 5.0.1

I did and i miss:
- fullscreen video streaming in some applications
- media volume is not anymore controlled with volume rocker
- some prgs are not compatible with ART
It's nice to have latest fw but google come on, this is one step forward but three steps back.

Just because whatever you are using isn't cooperating with the 5.0 update, doesn't necessarily mean it's the update.
Have 5.0.1 on my Nexus 7, and 5.0.2 on my Nexus 9. Full screen video streaming works in every streaming app I've used (and there are many), volume rocker controls media volume when media is in use perfectly (when else would you need direct access to it?), and most apps worth downloading added ART compatibility some time ago but that's not to say that they are all updated yet (and many probably won't be, simply because development is slow or inactive on plenty of apps).
Don't discourage people from testing out newer builds because of a few silly things you can't figure out. And it is a Nexus after all.. You can basically flash any and every thing to your hearts content, and can surely find some combination that works for you.
If you're on stock, try something custom. If custom, try stock.

Actually, it's like 10 steps forward and 1 or 2 steps back.
5.01 runs smooth as butter on my Nexus 7 2013.
I'm not using an official rom, but I'm on 5.0.2 and the ONLY thing that is not working is google play movie STREAMING only.
I can still cast and download
Other than that it's more stable and a lot faster than 4.4..... did I mention Lollipop is also prettier?
How can it be faster than KK if even Google confirmed the Memory Leak ? Android 5 allocates a chuck of memory for a system task of ~1.2GB RAM and doesn't release of when it's needed elsewhere, and only a reboot can temporarily fix it until it blocks it again? After Google releases the fix to AOSP and factory images, then maybe LP will be considered as stable.

I think it depends on the device. I've had no crashes, reboots, lockups, or anything like that on Lollipop. N7 2013
Unlock Bootloader
That's why it's recomennded to unlock the bootloader instantly after buying an Android-Device.
You can downgrade without problems and create N'android/W Backups into 1 File.
Here are the Factory-Images for all Nexus Device's (Android 4,4,1 4.2.1 is excluded )
Have a nice day
Media volume still is controlled by the volume rockers, but by the media has to be playing first

This ^^^
Tried a few different 5.x.x images (clean flashed) and personally I feel it's not ready for prime time, battery is worse, UI is lagged, and over all there seems to be a lack of compatibility and some poor design choices. Backed up my apps and re-flashed back to 4.4.4. Perhaps the next bigger version bump will get things to the point where I will try it again but for now this works for me.

It doesn't affect every device, and AOSP developers patched the leak in their ROMS anyway.

Well one scenario is when you want to jump in bed with a sleeping wife and watch some youtube or facebook. You don't want to start a video with audio blaring. I use Lollipop on my N7 and it is annoying.
I use a custom basic stock lollipop rom.
Overall it is ok. I am not sure about the notification panel. It looks too iPhoney. I can tell you that I am in no rush to get it on my phone.
The Lockscreen is annoying. It rotates and the swipe to unlock is only a specific way (up). So sometimes while laying in bed, the screen will rotate and won't unlock. I have to rotate it back and make sure to swipe before it rotates. I like being able to swipe in any direction without a target similar to the Galaxy line and others.
Mine is fine.. Audio / video is still as awesome as it was in kit kat.... Sorry yours isn't working for you... Maybe a reflash is in order... Fixed alot of bugs in mine..

Settings > Sound and Notification > First item is media volume.
I used Gravity Box on my N7 before Lollipop and I did have the option set to force media volume when I used the rockers. I still use it on my Moto X 2013. I got used to it, though. I also use an app called Slider Widget, which has a 1x1 widget that when tapped, shows the media volume and you can then use the rockers to adjust (or slide with your finger on screen) for adjustments when I'm not already playing audio.

Android M Developer Preview

It's here! Downloading it now and I'll flash it ASAP. Download link here, for those who want to give it a try:
http://developer.android.com/preview/download.html
I'm also gonna throw it out there: if you don't know how to flash this image you probably shouldn't. This is a developer preview and you are likely to run into far more problems than you would with the current official release.
I don't think it works with Nexus 9 LTE though
Edit: So you can flash the system, boot, cache and vendor img files using fastboot and get it working with just wifi. Just tried and successfully booted.

no, probably not. it'll be no different from trying to flash the normal nexus 9 image with the LTE model. that image probably won't come out until the final release - this is just a developer preview after all.
Flashed (did a dirty flash, without performing a factory reset), but back to 5.1.1 now. At least in my case I found it impossible to use as a daily driver.
Issues discovered:
1. Settings panel (in notifications) had an extra white pane underneath. Once swiped away / clicked, the settings panel was not available anymore when dragging down from the notification area.
2. Home button not working
3. Unlock screen missing, on wake up the desktop is displayed, however swiping occasionally produces an unlock effect.
4. Facebook app crashes when trying to open it.
5. Holding and swiping up on the home button did nothing (instead of opening Google Now)
Other discoveries:
1. The application drawer now scrolls vertically. It has a search bar and the last apps (or maybe most used?) at the top, separated by a horizontal line from the rest of the drawer. When scrolling, only the search bar remains pinned at the top.
2. Profile icons on the right side, (only) the first time the notification panel is pulled down.
3. The notification panel opens wherever you swipe your finger from the top (not centered anymore).
4. The volume pane now has a drop down button on the right that reveals the other volume channels.
Warning: for me flashing back (again dirty flash) to 5.1.1 leads to a boot loop, where it boots, optimizes the apps, then throws a short Google Play Services has stopped and then black screen and reboots. Then does it again.

So, to do this properly, do I have to unroot and go back to stock recovery? Or what's the best process when I'm unlocked, rooted, and with customer recovery already?

You don't have to unroot and go back to stock (as this is not an update). If you go into the bootloader (adb reboot bootloader) and flash all the img files in the factory image (fastboot flash * *.img, where * is bootloader, boot, system, cache etc.) it will give you stock Android M. I'm saying flash the img files, as for me the flash-all thing didn't work (it complained about the system partition, apparently a common issue).

I wouldn't. But you could experiment I guess (no guarantees though). Before you proceed make sure OEM unlocking is still on in Developer options, just in case.
Can someone who flashed it say some words about the the first impressions regarding performance ?
so after over an hour of trying to get it to work, i've finally got it to boot into the OS. i ended up having to force reboot it a bunch of times during the initial loading animation. interestingly, it showed a small warning for 5 seconds saying something like "your device has failed verification and may not work properly" with a red warning symbol on top, right after the bootloader splash screen.
before i force reset it (and reflashed the system image twice) it would get stuck at the loading screen for a very long time, much longer than what is normal for an initial boot on an encrypted device, and the top right corner of the tablet was getting very warm, meaning it was clearly working on something - maybe stuck in an infinite loop? anyway, installing my applications from a backup now and i'll get back about the performance and how it works.
something interesting i noticed right away is that when swiping down to show the notification shade, instead of always coming down right in the center it'll slide out from either the left, right or center of the status bar depending on where you swiped down. cool trick for making one-handed use easier i guess. i'll see if i can take a few screenshots once everything's set up.
oh, something else - there are a bunch of new neat animations everywhere. everything's a bit more fluid and there are some nice touches in a few places. not really something that can be explained without experiencing it though.
aside from the issues with booting up i haven't run into any other problems yet.
Flashed manually partition by partition, and erased user data before booting.
Absolutely no issues during flash and it booted on the first attempt.
It's currently restoring from my last Google backup, but so far a pretty easy experience (beyond flash-all being broken).
ooh there are a bunch of new battery optimization and battery usage tracking features, as well as a utility which tracks memory usage of various apps, and how often an app is running - and lets you choose whether to look at the past 3 hours, 6 hours, 12 hours and day.

I've noticed that the audio doesn't keep up with the keyboard if you type in any way reasonably quickly. Definitely seems slower to me so far compared with 5.1.1. I did a full clean wipe. I'm gonna do a restart once i install some stuff again and see if it clears it up. Noticed that the theme option under 'developer options' has an 'automatic' option, itd be pretty cool if it turned on at night for instance but its 10:24pm here in N.Ireland and it didnt go to dark mode when i chose automatic so who knows. Also see an option to enable/disable tap-to-wake, not something I want to disable but handy enough for those who do and maybe even potentially a small battery saving.
Jumpy audio through google play music, presumably related to the keyboard issue I was talking about. Still haven't restarted yet though.
EDIT: dark theme has enabled itself after i set the theme option to 'automatic', presumably because it's night time

Oddly, mine did go dark when I set the theme to automatic - I'm in England, so same time zone as you.
Can't say much else yet - still downloading my apps.
Quite a few force close pretty much immediately when I try to run them, but I'll let the restore take its course and reboot before making any firm judgements.
Given how generally poor my experience with my N9 has been to date, I'm prepared to put up with a few warts and teething issues.

I dont think its the fact that its dev preview that messed you up. By dirty flashing and then claiming it is not stable enough for a DD is stupid tho. If you want to truly experience it and not going around telling people you cant use it, then you should probably clean flash.
