Go back to old faster hd keyboard - 7" Kindle Fire HD General

The new Kindle Fire HD keyboard which is based on Swype is considerably slower than the keyboard that came with the first stock version of the Kindle Fire HD 7. Is there a way I can revert to that keyboard if I'm rooted?

[Q] Should I get a Kindle Fire?

I'm trying to decide between a kindle fire or a nook tablet. To be honest, the biggest selling point for me is, which will be more like a regular android tablet once rooted and flashed with a new rom eventually. I'm as interested in performance as functionality. I would primarily use it for light gaming, movie watching movies & Netflix, and Playing with apps and live wallpaper lol. Sorry, I'm relatively new to Android but i used to be big in windows mobile and flashing a different Rom every other day. I'm really looking for some personal opinions on this. Thanks a lot guys.
supposedly nook tablet has a locked down boot loader so custom roms and what not
wouldn't be made easily the kindle fire.
The Kindle Fire is easily rootable unlike the nook . You may then make it function more like an android tablet with all the apps you like. Read some of the KF threads and you will see the versatility of the KF.
The Nook Tablet is also easily rootable and can function like a normal android tablet. There is a script on the XDA Nook Tablet section that performs a root and then loads the standard Android Market app. From there you can load a launcher from the market (such as GO Launcher) and you are in business.
I too am wondering about this.
I'm mostly wondering if I'd need the extra storage of the nook, because the ram doesn't concern me very much. Google is getting ICS to work on the Nexus S which has the same GPU as the Fire as well as the same amount of ram. I'm confident that ICS builds for the fire based off of Nexus S AOSP will run just as well as Google makes it run on that device.
Locked boot loaders concern me more than ram. I'm thinking fire right now.

[Q] ICS; Is it really worth the trouble?

[Long Winded Question]
I rooted my Fire about a week ago and I am running Go Launcher(w/ Honeycomb and ICS themes) as my default launcher and am using WidgetLocker lockscreen. This sh*t is like a whole new tablet. Once in a while I go look at the Kindle launcher and think how absolutely crappy it is comparatively. I'm very happy. My question is;
Is it really going to be worth the trouble of flashing a new ROM just to get ICS when it's ready? What does it have to offer that Amazon's Gingerbread build in combination with rooting and custom launchers etc. doesn't? Just curious.
1 word.....YES!
Just do a search on new features on ICS.
Once everything gets caught up you will be drooling about ICS. What I'm looking forward to is better support for the expanded space of the Fire, which ICS apps have support for.

Yess only sound and video isn't working
Hhhmmmm
Might have to try it out when all the bugs are out.
Yes it is worth it. Flashing TWRP isn't much trouble at all. I'd recommend installing CM7 until the ICS rom is at a minimum of a beta stage so you can use your kindle like a full android tablet
It is definitely worth it, I got a Galaxy Nexus on release day with ICS (Android 4.0) and it is a big improvement all around. As soon as it's ready for a everyday use release I will be installing it immediately.
What really intrigues me about ICS is the fact that it was designed with button-less devices in mind. It's going to really be the bee's knees on the Kindle Fire. CM7 does a pretty good job with soft buttons (and the ability to add soft buttons to the long-press power menu, so you can re-enable full-screen support), but it's just going to be that much better with ICS/CM9.

I'm getting kinda hyped about it, now.
I have CM7 now it is fully functional and stable. Have Kindle, MP3, from Amazon, and found I can watch Prime VOD via browser by setting user agent to Linux desktop.
I have the ICS clock and taskbar from here and it works and looks great. I look at full ICS entry it goes beta.
using Tapatalk on a Kindle Fire w CM7 ROM
How's that VOD in browser working compared to using the Amazon Video app? As smooth? as nice?
In my opinion, yes. CM7 runs so much smoother and faster. The audio / video sync is perfect, or so minimal I cannot detect it. I have synch issues with Netflix still. Amazon VOD takes more steeps to get into the browser and pop it up full screen, but it is worth it to me, just not like the one touch of the stock Fire launcher.

Yes, I love it on the Kindle Fire. Visual wise, it looks awesome and crisp on it.

Yeah I agree it looks amazing, the only thing that bothers me about ICS is that its taking so long to get a good usable rom for everyday usage.

Silk browser vs. Cm7 browser?

Which is better? I am running cm7 and was thinking of installing the stock amazon kindle fire silk browser back on cm7. Are there any advantage using the silk browser or should i just continue using the cm7 browser.

Is the CM7 browser slow or laggy? Just curious as I was thinking about flashing CM7.
Thanks.
I am trying to put the CM7 browser on the Stock Kindle Rom, anyone with any idea on how to go about doing this like what other files are associated with the CM7 browser that would also need to be moved other then just the APK?
I didn't see a noticeable difference between the two. I prefer Dolphin (Mini) anyway.

CM7 browser is plenty quick, though seems to lack an intuitive tabbing system.
It also doesn't send all your browsing data to Amazon, which may or may not be a concern.
I agree - Dolphin HD is the best I've used so far - though I can't seem to get rid of that silly gesture icon in the bottom corner of each browsing tab!

This, this, and this.^^^
I tried the silk browser on stick kindle fire and was horribly disappointed. It was very slow.
I quickly flashed CM7 and use the fast dolphin HD which is my favorite browser especially because they have a lastpass plugin.

go into setup wizard and you can easily hide it.
I know this is a comparative to Silk vs. CM7 stock browser, but I've always found Opera Mobile to be the best all around browser. I've used most of them (dolphin included) and I think that Opera is the fastest page loading and has the smoothest scrolling due to it's implementation of hardware acceleration within the app. Dolphin may have this now but it's been a few months since I've tried it. I also do like Dolphin's tab system, but IMO Opera Mobile is the way to go.
The best one eI have found for my Kindle Fire is the Dolphin HD browser. Someone mentioned Opera Mobile and it is indeed very fast too. It lacks a good animation when pinch to zooming though that makes it very "choppy". Maybe it has been patched recently but when I tried the browser on a Galaxy S2 a while ago it was however not smooth.
I use Dolphin HD on an unrooted KF and am very happy. Silk is slower by enough to get on your nerves.
Thanks everyone im going to give dolphin hd a try

[POLL] Phone or Tablet Keyboard?

Well I am reviewing the Note currently, and I just installed Swiftkey X 3.0 Beta, and it told me that I might like to try the tablet version instead. Now the only difference between the two is how the keyboard handles landscape mode. Device keeps the keyboard together, while the tablet version spreads it apart.
My question is, which do you guy prefer? I'm actually using the device version more than the tablet version in landscape. Mainly because I have no problem with reaching the middle of the screen. But what about you guys?
Tired both I prefer the phone version of swift. Using it on 240DPI.
I have used Tablet mode for Swiftkey virtually since I got the phone. Make sure that you tweak the row height settings to get the right balance though as unfortunately even in landscape i find keyboards generally take up too much room.
The screen on the Note is so big that it is nigh on impossible to get across it quickly using Swype. No probs in portrait doing this but as a result SwiftKey offers the best balance overall.
Download the Swiftkey trial and give it a shot!
PS: If you are reviewing it give the one I did a once over...
I have been using the tablet version since the beginning and I am quite satisfied (I use it mainly in greek and french languages) . There's one feature I miss though, namely the ARROW KEYS, that seem to be available in the phone version.

I'm running my Note @ 320dpi and therefore i use a phone keyboard (was stock ICS keyboard, now i'm on SwiftKey Beta 3) but that's mainly because i'm using a phone UI and not a tablet UI
If you're using 213dpi or below then it makes sense to use a tablet keyboard (Thumb Keyboard etc.)

Did Google get rid of tablet interface?

So all the pictures show the tablet running a phone interface and not what a tablet interface. Did Google give the Nexus 7 a phone interface instead of a tablet one or is it completely gone from 4.1?

I'm sure they didn't remove the interface entirely and the launcher displayed on the Nexus 7 isn't exactly the same as the phone interface (six permanent icons instead of four), but I'd certainly like to know if it would be possible to change interfaces easily.
During the demo, tablet versions of apps were displayed.
So basically in JB it seems that there are 3 different interfaces.
Phone: Galaxy Nexus JB/ICS setup. all phone setup
7 inch: phone style launcher/notification bar, but tablet mode for apps (gmail, G+ was shown in tablet mode)
10 inch: full tablet UI.
Honestly, it makes sense, the tablet UI does NOT work well in portrait, but the phone UI does.

Yeah but the phone UI looks like crap in landscape which is how I will be using it 99% of the time.

It is good news to know that tablet apps are used. I personally am not too concerned about the launcher since I will most likely change it anyway
You should be able to easily change this with minor tweaks.

I am not sure about that, I remember the music app, youtube app were opened at phone version in the demo.

true. the choice if display is done through the app.
The developer can tell it to use the tablet mode on 10", phone or tablet mode on 7" and phone mode on below 7"
many tablet apps are not optimized for a 7" display, such as youtube, so they're going to default to the phone version.
but gmail for example, loads the tablet version of the app.
No.
7" tablets just look better in portrait.
Tablet mode is designed for landscape and Gogle have saod this tab is designed for portrait use minus films and games.

I'm hearing a lot of people say that it's because portrait mode is just better for a 7 inch device. Personally I don't think that answer suits everyone. I'd rather not conform to the ideals of others, everyone has their preference and opinions. Here is to hoping custom roms will give us a choice in the matter.
I'm hoping for a custom rom that allows per-app DPI similar to the one I'm running on my GNote.
I run in tablet mode but the rom allows different DPI settings for different apps, allowing those that need the phone UI to still look the way they should.

Changing the pixel density will automaticly put the device in full tablet mode. Detailed further here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1749501
