Hero dropped into the toilet :(

Hello,
today i accidently dropped my Hero into my toilet (no joke!)
I pulled it out and dried it and immediately turned off and removed the battery. I tried drying it with a hair fan and am waiting now but I am scared to turn it on again (happened like 7 hours ago...)
Do you think it's broken?

put it in a air tight container with some silicon granuals u get from paking or a load of raice and leave it some were warm for a few days b4 u try a battery in it

I don't think its alive, but before turning it on let is for 3-5 days inside a bowl of rise, so all water will be dry from the motherboard. Remove battery , cover , sd card and let the rise do its job.
I hope you get your phone fixed by that trick

I did this recently with my hero, but instead it was the bath.
First thing I done was take out the battery.
I then put the phone in a plastic container without the back cover or battery and covered with rice.
I then put this on top of a radiator and left it for 3 days.
This worked for me thank god. The phone is now cleaner then ever , only downside the watermarks are now red so no warranty for me.
I hope you have similar luck.

I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to source three of '77H00668-00M' if you knew where you were looking. I can tell you that there are three of those waterproof stickers in the phone, and only one is visible from the outside. The other ones are located internally, one at the radio on the bottom surface, and the other at the top right, near the earpiece (all on the rear of the phone with the screen facing down). There's also one tamper-proof 'VOID' label to contend with, part number '77H00615-01P'.
For informational purposes only I do not condone 'warranty fraud'!

Unfortunately that's the bit I can't help you with
Would you happen to have a similar old HTC device that uses those same stickers? If so, if it's out of warranty, a transplant of water-evident stickers (carefully so as not to damage them) may be possible. The 'VOID' tamper-proof one is slightly harder though, and you may need to just find a way to remove it without 'triggering' it. Usually, it is possible to remove these tamper-evident seals without damaging them, so long as you are slow and careful, and know what to do.

Well, that sorta killed the topic..

Open the phone.
Get a 100Ml bottle of IPA(Iso Propyl Alcohol) or Spirit.
Dip the tooth brush in the IPA and clean the board throughly.
Then blow it dry using the hair drier.

Water and HD2...

So I got some water into my HD2 and it's been sitting in rice and now silica gel for about 2 whole days now. Seems it's dried out around the circuitry (the screen doesn't flicker anymore and the touch screen is 100% functional). My problem is, I can see water under my screen. It is a pretty large amount of water under the screen as I can see discoloration (like water on paper sort of discoloration) and when I press the screen water bubbles move.
I'm relieved that the phone turns on and it functions 100% it's just there's so much water trapped under the screen.
Can anyone help me out and tell me how to disassemble just the screen so the water can get out? If that's too difficult, does anyone know how long it would take (ballpark estimate) for the water to come out. I'm paranoid because I think about a water bottle with a bit of water in it and that if it is sealed the water doesn't evaporate and just stays in there. Would that apply for my phone because it is sealed up? I mean the water got in there somehow so there must be some holes/gaps that will allow the water to evaporate out of (screen isn't foggy or anything though) but I'm afraid if the water stays in there too long it might do extra damage?
Sorry for this long novel, but any help or advice would be great. Thanks in advance.

Yeah I saw that too. Thing is, I'm terrified to try. That and I lack the tools to do so and even if I were to buy the tools, I have yet to find a video on how to just do the screen as I don't want to take the whole phone apart. It looks as if you might have to take the whole thing apart, but I was hoping there was an easier way to remove the screen

From what I saw on the video I dont think you can just remove the screen. I have not gotten the nerve up to do it myself either

On a side note, leaving the phone horizontel in the silica gel/rice for about 3 days may work also. Did on an old sansa mp3 player of mine. Let gravity help?

Do you mean like on its side? I didnt think of that... Its been flat on its back. Great advice! Thanks! Ill check back in 4 days to update.

Hopefully you haven't taken it apart yet. I got water under my screen too (from installing a knockoff brand of an invisible shield) had the discoloration.etc and so I put it in a container of rice for about a week. after 99% of it had gone away I stuck it under a lamp for an hour (make sure to not put it too close so you don't melt anything) and now it looks and runs just fine. Plus this way my warranty isn't void still (sticker on the back is white.etc)

That's really great news. I wouldn't dare to take it apart. I was hoping to hear from someone who has had the same thing happen before and have had good results. So about a week then would be a good time to leave it. It has been sitting in silica gel for about 3 days now (and rice before that for a day) so I'm gonna check up on it in two or three days. Was it a lot of water under your screen? Cuz mine looks like a lot.
My indicator actually showed water damage but I bleached it back to white lol (hell I don't have insurance nor will I be turning it in to T-Mobile anyhow) because the red is ugly. Anyway thanks for stopping by to let me know, it feels really good for me now because I've been worried sick for these past few days!

Hello (Sorry for my english), I have similar problem. Today I try place screen protector via wet method and now I have display full of water and my hd2 is in the box of rice.
For all that hd2 is fully functional. I hope it will be not very long procedure.

It took mine about a week to dry out about 95%. Hopefully yours turned out/will turn out alright too.

Just messed up my screen. (w/pic)

I was putting on a screen protector and the water got to the screen now the lower part of the screen is very white. Still very readable. What do ya'll recommend I do?

Is the liquid damage indicator normal? If so, swap it out with your provider. If it indicates liquid damage then see if there's an out-of-warranty replacement option and cross your fingers.

You could try drying it out with rice or silica dessicant. It might take a few days. Got any picts?

I know it sounds weird but the next morning it was dry. Something about the warm dry air coming from behind the fridge.

Put it on anything that radiates heat, nothing extreme but something that is somewhat warm to the touch. Refrigerator works well, also a PC, DVD player left running, etc.
Leave the battery out for 24-48 hours and see if it dries up the moisture...

Dry heat will help but be careful in case there's something that produces humidity nearby. I wouldn't leave mine on an appliance in the kitchen. I'd opt for an actual desiccant like silica. If you have a new jacket or pair of shoes you can find a packet in there. It's a long shot but rice also works in a pinch.
If that fails I'd send it to the OEM and play stupid. I don't think there are other LDIs in the device but if there are, I don't believe your provider would charge you a replacement fee because you checked the only one that's accessible. Just check it out with the respected technical department you talk to before sending it on, or ask a retail rep if your provider has a store or kiosk at a nearby mall. Just say you normally keep it in your pocket or in a protective case and boom, screen got messed up.

Same thing happened to mine, def the computer or fridge is a great way to get rid of the water. But only dry heat!

Yeah, it doesn't seem that huge problem, just give it some time and warmth
Some people have heated the (electric) oven up to 40-50°C and put the phone there, but I would recommend that only if any other method doesn't help..

Dry rice or silica dessicant. Take out the battery and stick it in there for a few days and it will be good as new.
Don't heat it, it won't work any better than this method.

Well I let it dry on top if my cable box and I happy to report all but four very very little dots dried up. I've learned my lesson and will only be doing dry installs for now on.

Some of these clear body shields are wet-applicant. They come with a little thing of liquid adhesive that you apply first. I've been around phones long enough to know that they don't play well with water, so I've steered clear, but I know plenty of people who don't have issues with them.
For the record, every wet-applicant protection system I've ever seen explicitly states that you should only apply it with the battery out and leave it out to dry for ~48 hours (to prevent exactly this).

Yes but this is my only phone and there's no way I can not use the phone for that long.

Haha, very creative. I wouldn't even think to use a cable box as the heat source even though I've been running one of those laptop cooling fan bases upside down on top of mine to vent the heat that was killing hard drives.

When messing around with phones to the degree that most of us do, it's always a good idea to keep a cheapo backup around.

I would highly recommend picking up a cheap backup - you never know when you'll need it. Typically you can just snag the cheapest prepaid phone that T-Mobile offers, they usually have something for $20 or less. Toss the SIM it comes with and just keep it around for an extra. That way, if something were to happen with your main phone, you've got *something* to keep you going until you can figure out a replacement.

yeah, and if this is not your first T-mobile phone, you can just go back to the old phone for a day or two while you wait.

Mine had the same thing from a paper cup leak onto the table my G2 was sitting on. It didn't resolve with the rice/heat tricks but T-mo switched it out under warranty. No down time because they ship the replacement and you send the defective one back in the same box.

Get closet dehumidifier. It's at Walgreens in the hardware section. It comes in a plastic tub and you put it in your closet to remove moisture from your clothes. They're little white beads in a basket with a cup underneath to catch the moisture. Put your phone in an enclosed space with that.
If the water was clean it should leave no residue. If it was soapy then you will probably have marks left over afterwards

[Q] Water damaged HD2 (advice please)

Last Friday night I had a little accident and my HD2 ended up spending some time in a river... I won't get in to details but the phone's been drying out ever since and I've got a torx T5 screwdriver on the way so I can take it apart if needed. I tried to turn it on earlier today and it actually seems to almost be working perfectly ; I've got sound, vibration, WP7 boots up just fine and the touch screen is as responsive as ever but the one problem I do have is the backlight. I can only see things on the screen in pitch darkness. From what I've read, it looks like I might have to buy a new LCD screen but before ordering parts I'd like to get a few opinions about what I should try to get it working properly again.

I'd try the bag-o-rice trick first, since even this late in the game I've heard that it can get the last moisture remnants out and solve some issues.
Sounds like the LCD needs to be replaced to me personally.

I've had it in a bowl of rice right next to a satellite decoder box (that gives off a little heat) ever since the accident so unless taking it apart completely (once I get my screwdriver) helps it looks like I'll need to buy some parts...

i will go defenitely for lcd + touch screen IF it comes mounted by factory... it will be very easy and more secure for your device.
but if you arent in hury wait 2-3 days just to make sure your phone its ok so you wouldnt i lose more money ( i work in a mobile shop service and wet phones have troubles after couple days if not at the beginning ), i hope everything turns ok .

Dim screen could also be caused by bad ic chip on the board that controls the display.

What board exactly are you talking about? So do you think that changing the LCD and touch screen might not even solve my problem?

Motherboard, but I would attempt lcd replacement 1st, if fails it the ic om motherboard.

i had water damage on 2 phones, both work fine. sun, zip lock bag with rice, hair dryer < that worked for me. i read that dipping phone in 100% alcohol also helps get water out. (when water drys up it leaves residue, alcohol doesnt)
ps. it can take up to a month for everything to 100% dry up. my iphone had glitches, then glitches went away.

Enegry drink + tf101 = A bad situation

Hey everyone
My poor transformer has seen better days, here's the deal
I had a can of energy drink in my bag and it decided to open its self and left a puddle of liquid at the bottom of it, sadly that's where my transformer was. after a few hours of drying with a hair dryer I turned it on and surprisingly it turned on and is working fine other than the left hand side of the screen is now brighter the then the right (here's a picture of the screen https://www.dropbox.com/s/ci6m1y4abh8n0z6/IMG_20120731_113759.jpg). I rung asus and apparently gonna cost $300 + nz because they only replace the whole LCD panel which is far to much. touchscreen, volume rocker(volume rocker side got wet) etc all work fine (Im typing this off it now). Just want to know if anyone has any ideas about fixing it .

Almost looks like it's still not dry yet you should have put it in a zip lock bag with rice right away

If i had enough rice i would lol, Its been sitting under a heat pump for a few hours and nothing has changed with the screen . Im a complete noob with lcd's but it almost looks like drink has reacted with some layer on the lcd, its gone slightly transparent down the bottom of the screen where the back lighting is. heres a better photo: https://www.dropbox.com/s/srhe70sumk34e63/IMG_0241.JPG

You should have waited for few days before you turned it on... hair drier will dry out the moisture from outside, so what about inside ? So turn it off and let it dry out..... also don't over heat it, you might melt the plastic

lol i accidently turned it on trying to get the bezel off, then stripped the screw so now its gonna be a mission trying to get it open lol , i thought i had killed it when i saw it booting up but I left it and it's working fine so far i thought if i leave it running it might start drying it out internally. Im gonna probably try claim insurance on it so anythings worth a try atm lol

Is it worth claiming insurance (then getting an insurance raise) vs getting a new one if it is broken? Good luck, I wouldn't dry it with heat... just soak it in rice because the rice will soak it up..

Yeah gonna see how much excess etc will cost first,hair dry was making slight progress which is good but i'm trying the method here (http://chathuraw.wordpress.com/2009/04/16/rescuing-a-water-damaged-laptop-display/) hopefully ill see some results, id do the rice method but i believe only a small amount of liquid managed to get in, there just seems to be a bit of moisture on the back of the LCD panel.

Definitely try and get it open, possibly give it a rinse. The sugar and crap in the energy drink would eat away at bits you don't want to be eaten away.
If you were in Dunedin I'd do it for you, had my 101 open a few times, and recovered lots of stuff that's had **** spilled on it

Cheers man , I got one of the screws out but the other is starting to strip so i want find a proper sized Allen key before i ruin it completely lol, Is there anything specific you would recommend rinsing it with?

Distilled water if you can find it. Bottled water at a pinch. Under no circumstances use Christchurch tap water

Well you could try it with alcohol. I do it quite often with water damaged phones.
You turn the pad off open your TF101 - here I have to mention that I have never open a Transformer so I can't help you with that - if possible you remove the battery, protect the display and brush the damaged parts with something high in alcohol content (my drugstore has a 98% ethanol)
The idea with distilled water can help sometimes but I experienced often that it just worsen sharply

Ive been looking at exploded pictures of the tf101 and I dont think it would have managed to get into the circiuty but ill open it up just to make sure. I was thinking rubbing alcohol might do the job, im waiting for the screen to return to normal its about 50% better then it was which is good, once that's back to normal im gonna try get it open, its a mission because i was panicking trying to get it open when i first done it and i threaded the screw so i gonna try super glue an allen key to the screw and try to get it out like that lol
