dead pixel/dust? - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey guys
so just today i found out a tiny black squiggly line in the middle of my nexus 10 screen
i'm having trouble figuring out if it's dust or a dead pixel.
|----------------------------------------------|
|
|
|---------.
|
|
|----------------------------------------------|
(won't recognize spaces so i made a '-' to drag it out. the '.' is the dust speck)
it's around that area of the screen so i'm having trouble believing it's a piece of dust. there also doesn't seem to be any way for the dust to get into my screen.
then again i don't think its a dead pixel b/c my nexus 10 is fairly new (4-5 months), and it's a squiggly line
do you guys have any suggestions to identify this? should i send it back for warranty? has anybody actually gotten a dead pixel/dust on their screen?
on a side note, i had just recently gotten ktmanta kernel and tweaked the GPU voltages. it's probably not this since i tried resetting the voltages and the black line was still there.

Mine also has something like a dust particle, but it appears a bit lower than yours. At first I thought that I could live with it, as it is only visible when there is some solid bright background near it. But I recently discovered a hot pixel - a constantly shining white dot when the background is very dark or black. I also bought the magnetic charging pogo cable and the tablet doesn't charge through it at all - tested the cable with the Nexus 10 of a friend and his tablet charged just fine. So I don't have any reasons to keep this tablet and phoned Google for a replacement.
If this dust speck is visible under normal operating conditions, you should be able to arrange a replacement with Google even if this is the only defect. We are paying for defect free devices after all

Same issue here. I just got mine from staples a few days ago so planning on exchanging. I hope the new one is better but I have read some horror stories on other threads of people getting a new device with more dead pixels or dust than the first. Will see what happens.

[Q] - Water indicators?

Hey everyone!
Somehow, on my HTC Touch HD, quite a big spot showed up. It displays colors and everything, the touch screen works fine on the position of the spot, but the spot is just brighter than the rest of the screen (you can hardly notice it, if the background is dark, but it's quite noticable, if the background is white / bright, or if you're looking at it from an angle.) Now, I have no idea what this is, but to me, it looks like some sort of water damage at most.. Yet, I have no idea how my HD could have come in contact with enough water to create a spot like that. Now, I'd like to know, where the water indicators on the Touch HD are, and what color should they be, if the device hasn't come in contact with water, and what if it has come in contact with water. I only know for the one on the battery, and that one is white with red stripes all over it (in a pattern). I'd just like to figure out, if my device really has come into contact with water (steam perhaps). Oh, and btw, the spot doesn't change if I apply pressure to it, nor is it visible if the device is turned off.. I'm letting my phone sit in a dry spot, without the battery in it for now.. I'll see if it gets better in a few days.
Thanks in advance! Perhaps, I'll post a picture of the spot, if I'll be in the mood for charging my digital camera..
Just under the battery in the bottom corner is a strip.
If it is pink/red it has been in contact with water (thats the colour mine is )
I think there are a couple of internal one around.
Check the manual posted around here somewhere. It has the factory instructions on how to pull it apart/put it together and where all the strips go.
Well..The stripe under the battery, to be precise, under the battery pins is still white.. But the one on the battery is white, with red patterned stripes over it..But I heard the one on the battery should be like that.. Not sure though.. And I don't think I'll mess with opening the device up..If the spot doesn't go away in a few days, I'll contact the shop, and ask what the hell's wrong with my new (5 days old) device ..
Kinda afraid I'll have to pay muchos euros for the repair though Does anyone have any idea, how much does it cost to fix the screen?
Just tried turning on my device, and, I think it's getting a bit better to be honest...The spot had even brighter areas inside itself before, but now, the whole spot has the same brightness.
Complain now while you're still inside a week! But hopefully it will go within next few days (i'm just hoping, I got no clue what it is!)
Good luck
I had something similar with other devices, an air pocket between the digitizer (it looks like water but isnt) and the LCD, you may have applied too much pressure to the screen at some time. The spot can be pushed out, using you finger push the spot towards the outside of the screen, eventually it will return again if you apply too much pressure. This normally happens from the device being in pants pocket and when you sit or bend the pressure is increased. Also hold your LCD to the ear, if you hear a high pitch eeeeeee squeal then you your LCD is faulty. I would send it back for replacement.
Hello again!
After not using my device for 15 hours, the spot has almost vanished. It's still sliiiightly visible from an angle, but otherwise, it has really improved over the night. So, I really think it's a drop or two of water that's inside, which is slowly vaporizing now. Kinda reliefed! I'll report tomorow again, to tell you if the spot is still there or not! But I'm pretty sure that it's going to go away completly by itself.
Anyways, thanks for all the suggestions everyone, but, I think I'll let the device cure this one by itself .

Pressure damage to screen, resulting in white marks!

I'm fearing the worst, but I thought I'd come and see if anyone had the same problem or a possible fix...
Basically a few times I have absent mindedly put my phone in my back pocket and then sat on it! The screen has not broken or cracked, however when I have removed it from my pocket there is a dark black mark that gradually grows smaller and then disappears. I thought nothing more of it until the phone was rebooting the next time, when I noticed on the brilliant white HTC loading screen a small white spot. As I mentioned before, I've accidentally done this a few times and now have a number of these white spots that are only noticeable when the screen is white.
Is anyone familiar with this issue? And more importantly is it fixable?
cheers
ClownShoes
if it's LCD screen, could be permanent... I dunno.
could be damaged lcd
lucky u havnt cracked it when sitting on it like what i did to my ipod. but on my old omnia i also have bright white spot on the screen
I had the same problem and I think is not because of you sat on it. I got it too but without miss treat the phone, so I went to HTC and they changed a new lcd for me.
i have the same marks on my bootscreen also thought it comes from pressure..
If it is the LCD that is damaged, does anyone know if it will be expensive to get replaced? I've just bought the Galaxy S and this is killing my chances of selling my HD2 for much

depends on how you define "expensive".
yea, LCD is one of the most expensive components of a phone, I'm afraid.
Pressure damage
Yo Peeps
Same happened to mine. Back pocket idiocy.
I fly quite often and when the plane reaches 30000 feet the mark disappears completely. I tried opening mine but I't not worth the risk since the screen still works perfectly (touch as well) and I live in South Africa where the HD2 is barely available (I bought mine in Germany). Also when you twist the screen the mark grows/shrinks.
If anyone finds some smart solution please post. Although the phone works perfectly it's rather sad to have such a beautiful screen stained.
Ive also got this problem. I've had it for the last 2 months. I can only notice it on white screens and its barely noticable then. I can't be bothered sending it off because its so mild. I keep my phone in my front pocket and im miffed as to how it happened though.

Like above poster, i cant be bothered sending it back as im fromi australia and bought it from Handtec UK.
i also have 3 white spots visible on white screens... its really anoying seing this white spots...
I had it on mine too! They replaced the LCD.I've waited 1 mounth.
Damaged
HTC state that my phone is damaged and I have to pay for repair
HTC want £178.68 to replace the MB and send it back to me.
I haven't paid yet as I spent £500 on the phone when it was launched.
When you pay that much you look after it.
It's in my jeans front pocket ( not tight ) most of the time, on a glass bedside table when home and if I take it into the bathroom I wrap it in a towel to ensure no moisture damage.
Look at my phone screen ( image was taken on a webcam not good quality )
The screen was like this from as early as I can remember but put up with it until now.
I have the same problem as U guys. those spots really annoy me. If you find out how to fix it it would be awesome. I woluld send it to htc but i bought mine on polish ebay and i found out that its blocked in uk (report as stolen and sell) i have got a buying proof but i dont know they will accept this. what you guys think?
Hello!
I have the same problems. A few white marks on the screen. I don't have warranty and i hope's to fix that problem by myself. If anyone have an answer please post it!!! Tnx guys, this is my first message on this forum.
Have the same.. It actually seems like the backlight led underneath the spot (on the bottom of the screen) is actually brighter than the rest..
I also started noticing a white spot on the middle of my screen as of a month now. Had the phone as of november last year, and really, this annoys me.
Nothing bad happened to my phone.
Does anyone know whether this is covered by warranty or not? I'd say once more white spots appear something must be wrong in the design/hardware of the phone and HTC should fix it. For free.
isnt it a dead pixel or something ?
like with computer/tv screens.
and a lcd screen with digitizer inc shipping costs something like 87 euro.
its pretty easy to replace by yourself if you use the step by step movie from HTC
ive done it last week and was working again in 20 minutes
(screen cracked btw)
Where do you buy the LCD screen with digitizer? Because now I have white spot marks + my touchscreen isn't even working. I think my digitizer is broken..
i have bought mine on ebay.com
most of them comming from hongkong , its not listed anymore in my ebay account because i bought it more then 60 days ago.
i know i was lazy to fit it earlyer haha
htc hd2 screen or htc hd2 lcd etc
you will find them, just watch for the shipping costs.
they have a custom to rip you off with it
goodluck

E Ink Spot after rooting... - Any fix? :(

Hello,
I just rooted my NST successfully with Touchnooter. After I used it a few minutes (about 5 mins), I found a black spot in the middle of my screen which won't go away.
It's everytime there, no matter what I do, even if it's off I can see the spot.
Powering the nook off and on again doesn't help.
Since I imported it, I can't replace it. That's what makes me really, really sad. Is there any way to fix this stucked spot?
Send the picture. It may help understand what is happening.
I'll do a picture if I'm at home.
After I used ADW Launcher and opened the App Drawer (where I slided from left, to right, etc. to look for the app i was searching), I got a stuck pixel (the e ink display doesn't have pixels? that's why i called it ink spot or stuck spot).
It looks like a dead pixel which is black all the time, even if my nook is off.
There have been a few reports of dead pixels.
I heard that somebody got an exchange because of it.
I doubt that anything you did with rooting caused this.
There are multiple "pearls" or blobs per pixels. See this microphotograph:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/pamoroso/5407255967/in/photostream/lightbox/
I don't think that you are seeing a single pearl getting stuck.
It seems to me that the problem must be electrical.
If it were me, I might try just for the heck of it to see if it could get "unstuck".
I'd try some full-page black white transitions, but I wouldn't hope too much.
I'd go for the unrooting path. If it comes back to original state, re-root again and check if the problem shows up again.
Forcing a black screen and coming back should work (sort of a screen reset), maybe a screen check program would do the trick (look for it in the market).
I already did use my backup, but that didn't help, sadly. It seems to me, that this pixel is burned in the screen now.
I also used a whole dark screen because I also hoped to reset this pixel, this was also not working.
Aww, it's driving me nuts. Is there really an app in the market that could help me? Because dead pixel at an e ink device aren't that normal. Oh well, so sad. And I paid 200€ for it + 1 cover + 1 light because of the import, now that. T_T
Thanks for your replies, apeine.

Yow! They were selling refurbished ones on eBay for $65.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Barnes-Noble-Nook-Simple-Touch-2GB-Wi-Fi-6in-Black-/300688948315?afsrc=1
Hmm, well they seem to be $79 now.
So, nobody knows a fix? T_T
like already said thi is a hardware issue..
it happens if you root or even if you root not..
its like you said a dead pixel.(on a TFT its not that bad because there are more pixel)
use the support(remove the root before)
thats the problem with a importet divice
its not cheap incase of an supportcase
As much as I like the Nook Simple Touch's general design, I have to say gross light diffuse!!! One day of use, extremely extremely extremely extremely extremely extremely extremely extremely careful on the screen. Now I have a white spot (when Glowlight is on) and black spot (noticeable on white background). Come on B&N! I really liked Nook (still do), but going with new Nook Glowlight (2013) is not an option for me at all. Up to now, no eReader can come close to the lovely Kindle Keyboard. It's like Windows XP of Microsoft products!
P.S. I guess the black spot occurred because of rooting, if not just because of bad design of NSTwG.
The black spot was definitely unrelated to rooting. The fragility of the light diffuser film is a very well known issue since day one. When the glowlight first came out bloggers posted pictures of their damaged bright spots. Though of course B&N never admits anyvsuch thing on their web site, so people just keep unwittingly damaging them. Get a replacement and use a case that protects the screen at least when not reading. I use a Speck case that has a formed shell that snaps onto the back and a hard book cover front. The whole thing is covered in fake leather. The inside of the screen cover is velvet-ish. I damaged mine too when I first got it. I was extremely careful too. Since then I use the case religiously and I know not to let anything touch that screen at all not even casually. Just my fingers. Since then no problems. I agree it is a bad design to be so delicate and bad policy and bad customer treatment not to warn you about it.

Thanks! yes I was aware of these issues right off the bat, but bought one as my 2nd eReader. Believe it or not, after this happening, I'm just more in love of my K3. It's just such a sturdy beast! Best of all readers, for me it even defeats Paperwhite or what not. It gets beaten around in my backbag etc. and I've had it for several years now. No wear. Handsome as first day.
My plan was to make this my main eReader, but now I can't fully trust it, so it'd still be my night time reader. Now my plan: get a case, be even more careful... and cherish K3.
Edit: Well, I have to say that the black spot is extremely small, like 1 pixel. You have to really look close to notice it. The white spot is even smaller and just noticeable in Glowlight and from one direction! From 3 other directions, it's not noticeable at all. With this, I realized: 1. The device had been like this since I got it in mail. 2. Rooting has nothing to do with these issues.
I still love my NSTwG though.

[Q] LG G2 screen problem - yellow spots

After two months of use I suddenly discovered yellow spots on display, which can be seen in the light background.
Do you have any idea what can I do with it?

I have the same problem, I'm going to send it away, I still have warranty, I hope they'll fix it soon.
I just hate this...
I have the exact same issue in the exact same spot. I'm still under warranty, thing is I rooted my phone, went back to original room which was suppose to unroot my phone but when I go to the isis app, it says this is a rooted phone blah blah, so I'm scared I'm going to get an out of warranty fee. Tf do I do?
I read that some tablets have the same problems which are caused by the adhesive under the display. Turning on for some hours the display at full brightness can help in this situation. But I only know abaut this problem abaout new tablets. You have the problem with an few month old mobile...
Yellow Spot no garantee??
Same here,
Yellow spots in the middle after a few minutes use. The spot gets bigger after intensive use and there is a small faint yellow line going from the spot to the bottom of the phone.
Went back to the shop with it, waited 4 weeks just to learn that LG does NOT think this is a fault of theirs so no garantee!!! My vendor is contacting them to find out what exactly makes them think this a is not a production flaw.
I'm gonna try and send it back to them anyway. This time i'll say its an overheating cpu in the description.
I had nothing but trouble with this LG phone. So if you'r planning to buy one I hope you read my posts before making a decission.
I'll keep you posted
I got mine changed with a new one, after they tried to change the display and it didn't work. So, I suggest you to insist.
Good luck!
I have the exact same problem. Yellow line on the top right of the screen. Looks just like your photos. I think it got there after some of the updates, the phone started to get really warm. Could it be some kind of burn? Melted glue? Guess I will have to take it to the shop, but not looking forward having it in the shop for a couple of weeks or more. Really annoying screen problem though.

The yellow line issue has occurred on other devices. On the Surface pro it develops due to heat damaging the screen, you'll need to have yours replaced.

Yeah, will repair it later on, need it too much right now.
Hi guys, just have this yellow spots when my phone is warm while playing COC, just notice it when I opened new tab in google chrome. Then what I did is I power off the phone and fan it then power on, the yellow spots disappeared. Should I replace it? Or should throw my happiness?
Hwy guys, FYI, we've established in another forum that it's the glue from (probably) only the first batch. Since then (probably) LG has started using better glue for the screen and thus no yellow spots. When it gets warm it gets yellower, when cold, it's back to uncolored.

Would they replace my G2 if I have this problem?
Hi All,
I am planning to buy LG G2 D802 for $399 with 7days replacement option & one yr international warranty.
I saw various complains regarding screen damage after few weeks/months use.
As the warranty claim is expensive & hard for me, due to non availability of LG service center in my country.
Please suggest me, whether I buy it or not?
LG G3 yellow spots
I have a new LG G3.
I recently noticed a yellow streak parallel with the shorter power connection side of the phone, quite visible when the background color is supposed to be white. If it's a glue issue, they've not upgraded the glue to prevent the problem.
I now do believe that it's an issue when the phone gets fairly warm. After coming into a cool air conditioned office and waiting a few minutes, the streak goes away (if I'm not constantly using the phone). You'd think they'd figure out how to avoid the problem. Someone's not doing enough homework, or they just don't consider the issue that important.

Just the phone, but I think that's up to your carrier.
I had a yellow spot show up far left middle of screen when the phone got real hot and now its at the top of the screen to the left. But its only there if the phone gets real hot. I also have garbage gps locking that loses signal a lot. But im affraid of rmaing and getting someone else's issues instead lol.
so there is some thing we can do?

What went wrong with my Nexus 6p?

Hey Guys,
I noticed something strange with my phone this morning and it has gotten progressively worse throughout the day. Has anyone encountered something like this? Originally this started off with a large set of vertical green pixels (as seen in the first picture). Then a further degrading of this with purple blotches as seen in the 2nd pic, and I'm pretty sure my display is dead now as I can swipe up and feel the haptic feedback but can't see anything on the screen.

The phone isn't bent in any way so I'm guessing that the connection inside the phone went bad. I know a repair guy who is pretty handy but I want to see if anyone knows what I am up against.
Thanks!

Hello definitely a hardware issue. At least I already seen this before and the screen was dead. My wife used to have an LG G2 and it displayed those weird purple smudges all over the screen after one of our daughter crushed it walking on the device.
Do you eventually sit on chairs with your phone in your back pocket?
Good luck...

I wouldn't buy a phone 2nd hand off Ebay. I hear to many bad things. Use Swappa in the future brotha!
That is most certainly a defective digitizer. I'm guessing a stress was placed to the digitizer at some point or heat/cold maybe?

Bought it for $400 in Jan 2016 when it was 3-4 months old since someone didn't know how to bypass the Google Factory reset lock. Most other 128GB were going for $650+ at the time. Ebay/ Swappa would have ended up in the same place regardless. I don't blame Ebay for this experience but I have not bought many phones from them regardless. At least 6+ purchases on Swappa and all have been great. Taking to my local repair guy who I trust very much who quoted me for $195 to do the work and replace the board which is worth it to me.

This ironically has been in a Supcase Unicorn Beetle case since day 1. I am guessing that the phone being on the larger side of my front right pocket definitely has pressure put on it which likely caused this.
