I wasn't sure where to put this but any help would be appreciated. Lately my phone gets extremely hot, I'm running froyo 2.2 latest built. And I'm running launcher pro home replacement replacement with only 5 screens. And I have battery indicator telling me right now that the temp of my phone is 105.1F. How do I find out which app(s) is making my phone heat up?
Try looking at what's eating your battery then go from there.
It shows my display at 86% and android system at 8% those are the highest using battery...my backlight is at 50% brightness...would Anyone recommend having that set to auto brightness?
i have my n1 set to auto and it still gets pretty hot. i have not had any issues with it over heating though so maybe give it a try. also, are you running a task killer? ive got security set to low, and it auto kills apps every 30 minutes or so. it seems to help out a bit, saves battery too.
I've had this problem since I updated to Froyo.
After a while, the data connection seems to be used -constantly-
and I really mean -constantly-, I'm also running Launcher Pro - So maybe there's something there?
As an earlier post said, the Screen appears to be the top "battery" user when looking at the battery stats (I've found these to be EXTREMELY unreliable though )
My screen is set to Auto, so I doubt that's where the problem is.
Also, in my case, it's the very bottom of the phone that gets hot (I believe that's where the antenna / actual chipset for the radio is?)
One thing I've found that "helps" so far, is to disable account sync, then re-enable it. Apparently that's what's causing an overuse of 3G for me. This only helps in some cases though.
Usually I just turn off data completely for a few seconds and re-enable it.
Any "tips" on what could be using that much data all the time (Maybe it's not even using the data, but just somehow trying to keep a single connection alive?) would be greatly appreciated. I'm honestly not sure here!
Any ways, that's what I've found out "so far".

Thanks for all the feedback and tips I will try all these things. But I agree and ever since I upgraded to froyo it gets extremely hot. And I'm running launcher pro but I tested it with the stock launcher and still gets hot....who knows....
I'm having the same issue on my nexus. I have a custom rom with stack kernel and ADWLauncher with 3 screens and brightness on auto.
What should i do?

Run System Panel, it'll show you any apps using CPU, and network stats.
Something is clearly wrong with your phones/config/cache/something, my Nexus One stays ICE COLD all of the time even with K9 mail with push IMAP, weather syncing, GPS uploading to my website every 10 minutes, etc..
Hey guys I'm having some concerns about my xperia play and so i want to know if i should be worried...
My screen flickers. ( Not on/off) but between shades. It's hard to explain but it drops between levels of brightness, but here's the deal i turn auto brightness off and it still flickers. Now i have noticed that the screen will dim ( flicker shades) with the orientation of the phone. Idk.
Also when I'm downloading the games thru xperia app it takes forever, i have high speed internet and I'm connected via WiFi but should i be expecting A 150MB download to take up to 45 minutes. Seems kinda slow to me.
Thanks in advance guys.
By Tue screen flickering if u mean the auto brightness increasing and decreasing immensely at times its normal since u cant turn off the auto brightness in our phone....
About the games..most of the games took 15-20 mins or less for me on an 8 mpbs connection

Is there some kind of other brightness settings, i turned auto brightness off. And I'm still getting fluctuations in the shade of color.
if you have root you can disable this, but it is only temporary as somewhere in the system it re-enables this.
create a gscript with su ability
start script below
echo "0" > /sys/devices/i2c-0/0-0040/leds/lcd-backlight/als/enable
end script above
do not include the start and end parts
lasts around an hour, stops the flicker in bad light situations

It wont turn off even if you untick it, its an anoying bug, hopefully custom roms/kernels will solve this, dont worry about the downloads, even with high speed internet, keep in mind most of the developers are small companies and cant afford expensive hosting, even the gameloft servers are slow imo

You can NOT turn auto brightness off on the Play, it is hard wired right into the os, even if you used an app or widget saying it if off it is NOT! there is nothing you can do until SE fix it or some members here mod the os,
All the Play's do exactly what your describing, lots of topic here and elsewhere about it, everybody moans about it!
And regarding downloads, things from the market download fast for me, very fast, but other stuff from other places can be very slow, gameloft for example, takes hours! just depends on the servers your downloading from.
Hey thanks guys for the information. When i get to a desktop I'll hit the thanks button for all of you. I think my WiFi was acting up last night, i was playing some zombies and downloading torrents at the same time.lol. anyways thanks guys again.

Actually you can disable it, its just not permanent please see my previous post
To be honest with you I like the auto brightness. I think is super responsive which other phones it seems like it takes forever to kick in which is why I normally shut it off

I think it works great too, but it is nice to have this little gscript ready for times when the autobrightness goes wacky and the screen flickers
Hello everyone, as some of you know im totally new to android stuff so i ask alot of questions. I would like to find a way to increase my screen on time or maximize it.
Please keep to subject and post only if you have found a way to get longer then average screen on time.

it depends on how you use your device. if you are watching movies or listening to music, youll have longer screen time. if youre playing games, itll be shorter. if all you do is use the browser, itll be average. screen time is dependent on your use.
Turn off everything you find in settings, including NFC and state broadcast stuff. go through all settings with a fine tooth comb.
If you have stuff like facebook ect, make sure they are not constantly syncing; check their settings.
Run low brightness as low as you dare, turn auto backlight off. Use only use wifi or 2G; don't play games, unless it's a card game
When putting the phone down for a while, bring up recent apps and swipe them all off, that way you can make sure of no weird wakelocks.
And when you sleeping, set airplane mode.
The next step involves underclocking and undervolting ect with custom kernels.
You can flash custom rom, and kernel, undervolt, lower brightness....
If you need more details on this, let us know

Try to flash the Motley's kernel.t helps greatly with battery life.

Thx meangreenie i will do that.
By the way what does airplane mode do?
Kk yall im a heavy user playing games, surfing the web, and listening to music. I am rooted and on CM I get about 4 hours of screen on time, and what I mean by 4 hours is literally that, i get around 3 to 4 hours screen on time which is terrible!
By the way what is a custom kernel, what does it do, and how do i use it?
Will i lose my data if i install, flash or root the kernel? What ever those steps are called.

You won't lose your data if you flash the kernel. However, unlocking the bootloader does wipe the data off your phone.
Look up Hippowise. They have a pretty easy guide to follow.
The kernel is basically the bridge between CPU and the actual applications so it controls how the CPU manages and processes everything. If you flash a custom kernel, then basically you can modify how the CPU works including how much voltage it's going to draw. If you want better on screen time, what I suggest is flashing a custom kernel like motley's and then undervolting it. Also since this is a quad core phone and not all applications are made to use all 4 processors, I would modify the hotplug control so only 2 cores are being used to save battery. These things are very dangerous and could make your phone go into a permanent bootloop, so I would tread with caution. Read, be informed, and know exactly what you are doing before attempting anything. Also, don't ask questions before trying to find the answer yourself. XDA is not for tech support, it's for learning. Google is also your friend.
Some SIMPLE things you can do without any fancy modifications at all are with screen brightness and wifi. The biggest factor for on screen time is probably display brightness. Turn off auto brightness and lower brightness to the lowest that you can comfortably view the screen. The second biggest factor is probably wifi versus cellular data. If you do web browsing and streaming a lot, streaming on WIFI will significantly raise your on screen time versus using cellular data like 3g/4g.
flash a more configurable kernel, I managed to get 2 hours more with a conservative approach. cut the games and delete or disable those service apps you don't use.
airplane mode cuts out your communication signals/wifi,blutooth, you can enable wifi again, its good to use while asleep or in poor service areas so the phone doesn't waste power on recieption.
if you did tinker with the kernel which resulted in bootloops, you get into cwm since the kernel config won't apply at the bootloader, but when it loads the OS?

Yep, you could still boot to recovery (CWM)
Ok wow thats alot to take in but i am doing it and seeing about a 1 hour jump in my screen on time.
But for the games XD sorry guys i got have my deadtrigger.
I will be installing a custom kernel that will maximize my screen on time, now that i hav learned about this.
Any last suggestions would be great

Even if I am using manual brightness set to max - when browsing for example XDA forums which has alot of white - I notice if i drop down the statusbar to check notifications - then go back into xda the screen dims down a notch. (Going from alot of black to alot of white)
This is with all auto-options set to disabled and at max brightness.
This also occured in omega rom, also MF8 base.
And sometimes after a while, it can go back to max brightness randomly. I feel its some sort of adaptive brightness thingy that is misbehaving - even though everything is set to manual.
I tried MGA but its the same thing - . -
and it happens randomly. then after a little while the brightness can go up to max again.......
There's an option in the display settings which is badly named but which turns off this behavior. I think it's named adaptative display or auto tone or something like that. It's the 2nd from the bottom.

Same probleme here....
That made now 2 weeks that I search a solution. All the options of auto-luminosity are disabled, luminosity set to the maximum manually, auto-tons disabled and eco mode off but despite everything, in a dark part, my screen dimmed. It is very disturbing because it dimmed then return in full luminosity etc.... It is a problem but beyond that, I noted that at the time when the automatic adjustment of luminosity occurs, the processor also loses in frequency. It still reaches a maximum at 1.458 ghz or worse at 1.2 ghz.. I tested several Roms: Stock rooted, Google edition 4.3, V8.0 Omega, the result is the same one. I tested several Kernels: Faux123, KT-SGS4 and Adam Kernel. I tried to block the processor at 1.89 GHZ (min + max) at a session of games but at the end of a few seconds, automatic reduction of the luminosity and decreased processor. I think it is not a hardware problem because much of users of Galaxy S4 have this worries.
I become insane with that! And my wife also
Is it possible that a developer integrates a corrective in next a Rom or perhaps make a tweak?

I think i know what's causing the issue.
When I got my phone I noticed the same thing. Apparently its a function of the software deep in the system(at least that's how I understand it). There is no easy way to turn it off. Basically it throttles the screen brightness depending on the average amount of white displayed. The more white the more the brightness is throttled. Not sure if it's to prevent the screen from overheating or to save battery or for both. It's kind of like how the screen can ramp up to a higher brightness when in auto than when in manual. I think it's a thermal issue, but not sure.

i also think its thermal/power saving related.
a kernel tweak should fix it.

Lately my s view case when opening has one heck of a lag turning on. Anyone else experiencing this problem?
I have been having the same problem. I have had the case on for about 3 weeks now and everything was fine until about 2 days ago where this started happening and it has been very randomly. Every time i have tried to show the problem to anyone it doesn't seem to happen. I also happened to notice the issue occurring more when the phones battery level is under 50% (not sure if that has anything to do with it though).
Mine even locks up occasionally. Assumed it was an app (the music download app was my guess), but the timing with these other instances is very odd. I deleted about 15 apps and seems more stable now. Could it be a memory issue? For those with this problem: please reply with a) last 5 apps installed and b) free space on internal memory.

I have not installed any new apps since I started experiencing this issue but the last 5 the were updated were Facebook (multiple times) Spotify Galaxy Gear Manager Chrome and S Fitness. My available internal storage is 6.88 GB and my Ram used is 1.4 GB. I have also started to notice that it does happen more with my galaxy gear paired with my phone (but that could just be coincidence as i have my gear paired 90% of the time that my phone is in use). I also tried flashing my SD card thinking that might be the cause as i have had to do that to help with battery issues in the past with other galaxy devices but it also did not work.
When you open the case, do you open it like a book or flip the cover all the way open so it rests on the back of the phone? I feel like it happens more when I open all the way. Is there a magnet in the cover?

I have just been opening it like a book and it is happening. I am not 100% sure if there is a magnet in the case. I would have to guess that there is a magnet which is what allows the s view to work properly. I do know that i have a smart cover for my Galaxy note 10.1 (2014) and that does have a magnet at the top that allows the tablet to turn on and off automatically and I think that they are using this same technology on these covers.
Are you using a third party launcher? I have Nova installed and am beginning to wonder if that is the cause of the issue. I was just noticing it happening regularly so for testing purposes I switched my phone to Touch Wiz and everything appeared to work fine. I am going to try and work with Touch Wiz over the next few days and see if that makes any difference.

I thought that may be it could be Nova launcher but the same thing has been happening with the Google Now launcher. Has anyone figured this thing out? It makes me want to go back to my Note 3.

I have gone all weekend without the phone freezing once with the cover on. Even pressing the power button two or three times quickly (which previously would freeze the phone immediately) worked just fine and it has been just as responsive as the day i took it out of the box. Just for fun i turned the weather and pedometer views back on the the S View Settings and almost immediately it started freezing again and stopped once i turn the features back off. I am going to go out on a limb and say that this was a success for me. As much as i love having those features turned on for quick glance purposes I will gladly give them up for a quick functioning phone.
Alright.... This ^^^^^ worked for me no matter what launcher I used! I literally spent hours throughout the day trying to get it to freeze after disabling the pedometer and weather but it never did. Thank you!

I bit the bullet and did a factory reset. Pain in the a$$, but no problems for a week...
I contacted Samsung yesterday about this. A factory reset will work temporarily but the issue will come back again. The only suggestion they had was to clear the data from the weather app and the s health app (which means loosing all data in your health app and any weather locations you set which I have a fair amount set) which again. Is only a temporary solution. In my opinion this is not an acceptable solution but it's all they could provide to me so I am choosing to stick with keeping these features off for now.

Yeah... I'm on the same page. I shouldn't have to keep clearing the data to get my $50 cover to work properly with my phone. I don't need the weather and pedometer in s view that bad....

Just a heads up it appears that samsung has fixed the issue. They released an update to the s health app today and a fix to the s view issues was on top of the changes. So far (it's only been about 10 hours) I have not had an issue with the pedometer and weather apps on. I will update again if I run into any problems.
