[app] KF Boot Animations - 7" Kindle Fire HD General

How to change your boot animation.
YOU MUST HAVE ROOT ACCESS. Will not work with Persano's Tweaks applied!!!!.
Enable WiFi. You will need it.
Available at the Play Store > Boot Animations ★ root
For a visual demonstration, check out my video here.
***Update*** I've tested about 30 different animations so far and all have worked on my KFHD7. :good:
And....... if you go here, you can get the boot animation for cm10. Unzip to desktop, choose the size you want and grab the boot animation.zip within that size/layout folder.(I used 800 in the vertical folder) Copy it to your sdcard and navigate to it using the local interface in Boot Animation, choose install. Viola! CM10 boot animation on your KF.

ROM Toolbox, I think.

Yeah, or it can be found separate in Play. I provided a link.

Krsmqn,
Very nice find Krsmqn, thank you for posting this tutorial.

This doesn't work on my 7". I followed your instructions and now have no boot animation. The kindle fire logo comes up but it doesnt animate and everytime I boot now it says 'upgrading' then boots as normal.

This does not work if you have the 2nd bootloader installed.
Edit: ok it does work with second bootloader. It was persanos tweaks it dont work with. It boots to fast to see the animation.

I have the second bootloader installed and it works for me. I'll post a video in the OP.

Could it be because i havent moved the apk to the system/app folder and changed permissions?
Sent from my KFTT using xda app-developers app

Give that a shot!
***EDIT*** I just checked where I had the apk installed and it's in /data/app/ with rw-r--r--
I am sorry. I can't tell you why it isn't working for you. I'm just not that tech savvy. All I can offer is the video and my so so instructions. I hope you get this figured out. It's nice seeing something other then "kindle fire" upon boot.
Good luck.

Katalystik,
We wanted to plug in here for a moment. Sometimes, without rhyme or reason when you have an App that suddenly stops or will not initialize we have found moving it to /system/app solves the problem 90% of the time. Be sure to change the permissions to User: Read Write | Group: Read and Others: Read.
The other 5% of the problems are cleared by:
1. Going to More+ Applications > Installed Applications
2. Find Boot Animations ★ root and clear the Data
3. Reboot
The last 5% need:

I apologise, I should have explained my problem more clearly. Before I moved the app it was working fine. I could open it and select a local or server file to use. I chose local and selected a boot animation.zip from /sdcard using the cyanogen 10.1 vertical 800 file as per the OP. I rebooted using the option at the top.
What I was greeted with was the orange kf logo, non animated, and which hung there for 20-30 seconds before dimming, and then getting the kindle is upgrading message. It would then boot into nova as normal. No animated kf logo, no custom animation and no animation at all. On a few occasions, before the kf logo dims and before the kindle is upgrading message I get what u would call a brick screen (looks like digital static) which was scary when I first saw it but it still boots correctly.
Now would be the right time to say I have persons tweak pack installed, i have read somewhere that with the tweaks it boots too fast for the animation to display. This is a shame if true. Is there anyway to get both working if so as I'd rather not lose my boot animation or persons tweaks as they rock my kindle.

Go back to the Parsons tweak's thread, there may be something posted by another user that could help you.
For anyone else, this should work fine.

[Q] "Process System is Not Responding"

I just installed the latest version of Apex, did a few customizations, then rebooted because I changed the LCD Density. Now, whenever I boot, it says "Process System is not responding". I can force close it, wait, or access the power menu. But, the screen is black, and I can't do anything. This is after a day full of reflashing and wiping because the damn device couldn't receive text messages.

If you have a backup try restoring

How? I'm trying to follow the guides, but whereever I go, the SBF zip is corrupted.
It appears to be working now. I think I'll hold off tinkering with it for a little while. I still would like to know why it did this, though. For now, I'll just restore my apps, but only the ones I use all the time,

Did you happen to delete any system apps when you were customizing? You might have deleted an app that settings was dependent on by accident, which could cause something like that.
ALWAYS do a nandroid backup before you start tinkering with the phone, it will save a lot of trouble.
Heres how to do it:
1. Boot into clockworkmod recovery using Koush's Bootstrap Recovery
2. Select Mounts and Storage, and mount /system and /data
3. Return to the main menu and select Backup and Restore
4. Select backup and let it work.
5. When its done, return to main menu, and choose to reboot.
Now you can tinker however you want. If you happen to mess something up, return to clockworkmod recovery (hint: if you can't get the phone to boot properly, boot the phone, and pull the battery when you see the M logo. Replace the battery and it should take you to clockworkmod)
1. Boot into recovery
2. Mount your /system and /data again
3. Go back and select Backup and Restore
4. Select restore, and select you restore file (should be the only one if you've only done 1 backup)
5. Let it work, then reboot the phone, and your phone will be in the exact same state as it was when you did the backup.
If you can't get into clockwork, you'll need to SBF.

Thanks, that'll really come in useful. The reason I couldn't fix it before is because Moto sucks, and encrypted the bootloader, so I was having a problem getting back into Clockwork. Did I say thanks? Oh well. Thanks.

Yeah moto does suck for that. They are giving options on future devices to lock and unlock the bootloader though (like the xoom) so at least they are making progress. Doesn't help us though...

Are you using Droid 2 Overclock? I'm asking because it allows setting screen density. I found that the new startup scripts added to Apex 1.4.1 don't play well with OC settings that were fine on Apex 1.3. The scripts add sysctl and CPU tweaks.
I set my OC settings to more conservative settings, and it has been far more stable. This isn't a knock against either product. Both work fine together with a bit of work.
Fab did release a test release (1.4.2 seems to be the informal name) that doesn't launch his new startup scripts automatically, and that's what I'm currently running.

Aye, I am. It seems fine most of the time for me. However, I've only been running for a few days, and have barely rebooted.

I am had luck with 1.4.2 by setting my OC values to defaults before doing my pre-flash backup with Titanium Backup. After flashing, I was able to restore everything, including OC (default) values.
I also disabled the CPU tweaks Apex puts in /etc/init.d scripts, and and re-run QuickClock Advanced to recalculate my clock and voltage settings and imported those into Droid 2 Overclock.
So far (5 hours), it's been solid. If you don't want these issues, stick to Apex 1.4.0 for now. It was very stable.

Motoactv

Just curious if anyone is willing to tackle this little gagdet. It needs some fine tuning and possibly a voodoo sound app would be awesome. It lacks the loudness like most android phones.
It looks interesting, but I would not personally buy it. It does not have enough features for me to use it over my phone.
Sent from my XT862 using XDA App
Well I purchased one and with the help of the other thread about the apk i was able to sync to my epic with all features including the calls/missed calls and acuweather. This was with the corded headset. I have no real reason to get the wireless. The only real problem that i have right now is the sound level of the player. Its very frustrating to have to use a program to up the db level in every song i put on it. It running some kind of android platform so someone has to have some ideas.
Well, it looks like someone has listened... I didn't see a thread anywhere else, so I'll post it here, some one has rooted the motoactv. the story, along with a link to a how to is available, just google it. I was gonna post a link, but I can't.
The Motoactv runs gingerbread. CWM has gained root on it and installed Google apps. It has a decent chip and ram for a small device. The bootloader isn't locked. More and more smart watches and wearable computers will be coming out. I'd like to see a custom launcher for this size screen as QCIF+ ain't exactly great for a lot of launchers. A custom rom that remapped the hardware buttons would be nice as well.

Hi People
I just rooted the MotoACTV with the tutorial provided by Wade, the guy that rooted the watch. But I am having problems installing the ggole apps on it. The guide does not explain very well how to install the gogle apps. I managed to install several apk via adb commands and they work ok. But I am missing the market and every default google ape. Can someone explain how to do this? I already downloaded google apps zip file from cynogen web page.

There are libraries in the unzipped file that need to be installed with the adb push command to get maps to work. The market needs a bunch of crap to work. You should push all the apk (except car home if you don't want it) once you have those over, restart and you download the rest of the apps from market.

This sounds intriguing can you run RunKeeper on the rooted device. I have the motoactv and love it for running but RunKeeper in my opinion is the best running app. Im anxious to hear more about this.
Thanks Dragon, but one more question before I keep trying this market stuff. Do I do the adb push command to the same exact directories as the zip has. Like for example: the zip file that I downloaded was for CM7 and it includes a lot more directories than simply the app directory. Do I have to push every single directory the zip has and create the ones that are missing within the watch. Can you please explain more in detail if possible. Thanks again for the help as this is the only thing I am missing from this "the market".

So, once unzipped you will see "META-INF" and "system" folders.
Inside "system" you will see:
app
etc
framework
lib
inside "app" you will see:
*CarHomeGoogle.apk
*FOTAKill.apk
GenieWidget.apk
Google Maps 5.12.0.apk
GoogleBackupTransport.apk
GoogleCalendarSyncAdapter.apk
GoogleContactsSyncAdapter.apk
GoogleFeedback.apk
GooglePartnerSetup.apk
GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk
GoogleServicesFramework.apk
*LatinImeTutorial.apk
MarketUpdater.apk
MediaUploader.apk
NetworkLocation.apk
OneTimeInitializer.apk
*Talk.apk
Vending.apk
(*not really needed on MotoACTV but won't hurt to install)
I am doing this from a Mac using terminal, it has been a richard year since I have used CLI with windows but for Linux the commands will be the same ("dragon$" is just my terminal prompt).
dragon$ adb push ~/Desktop/gapps/system/app/Vending.apk /system/app
dragon$ adb push ~/Desktop/gapps/system/etc/permissions/features.xml /system/etc/permissions/
So, you see I have pushed the files to the corresponding directories that the files are found in the unzipped folders.
I cannot remember if adb push defaults to parent owner and permissions but if not you will have to change them to root/root and RW-R--R--
I followed CMW's guide to root mine, too.

A full custom would be great (but not needed for remapping hardware keys); Motorola's UI is really quite nice for the screen size, but won't show custom apps. Instead of the fake Honeycomb one, I prefer to use Zeam (with the launcher and grid set to 3x3 icons) -- I just think it works much better, without overlapping icons and so on.
To get a shortcut to the wifi access point settings in zeam, press and hold in a blank area, and go to "add", then "shortcuts", then "settings", then "settings" again. This "settings" is the hidden wifi one.
I also remapped "Start" to menu fairly easily by modifying they G2-keypad.kl file under keylayout; nosit1 was able to do the same with music to home. The people in #motoactv on freenode.net are very helpful, including CMW.
More information on that:
/system/usr/keylayout/G2-keypad.kl
Change this line:
key 220 FITNESS WAKE_DROPPED
to this:
key 220 MENU WAKE_DROPPED
On a separate note, you'll want to backup your userdata partition, too. Otherwise, it can get corrupted and make the file loop at the motorola logo:
dd if=/dev/block/userdata of=/sdcard/userdata.img bs=1024
adb pull /sdcard/userdata.img userdata.img
Even when restoring that, there are a ton of force closes from com.motorola.gault.activity; you have to get past them to a custom launcher to factory reset.
@dragon_76
Does anything need to be done with the META_INF folder? I'm attempting to get Market working on my Motoactv but I'm still getting a Google Services Framework force close. I pushed over the gapps from CM6 (the ones under HDPI). Not sure if those were the right ones.
I think I need to factory reset and start over from the beginning. :/

No, that folder is for recovery mode installers.
Amazon app store works perfectly if you can't get Market to work. It takes a fair amount of trial and error with apps to find ones that are functional.
I can't recommend enough installing grafitti pro. I have it from Amazon FAOTD.
I have superuser.apk installed and I had to push my preferences from /data/data/ on my phone to my watch so as to autorespond "yes" to root requests and no notifications because the UI is a fixed size window.
After doing that I installed button saviour and my purchased key for the pro features to have only home and menu onscreen. (Button saviour needs root permission).
I use golauncher ex with 3x3 home screen and the notification bar hidden. I wish I could remove the dock but oh well.
Android is going into more types of devices, I wish Google would push scalable graphics. I am however very impressed with the amount of apps that work usably on a QCIF+ screen (Netflix!)
I also like the main launcher and if I could access an app like AltDrawer from it I would not have another home replacement installed. I will tear apart Launcher2.apk soon and see if there is a way to customize it.

Okay so last night I attempted to root my motoactv but my adb for some reason say it cannot load the root.img, I had the same problem where it's couldn't load the recovery.img for my photon when attempting to apply CWM or twerp recovery. Fastboot devices definitely sees both my devices (no I didn't do them are same time, and the files needed are in the same file location as instructed) and I can even Fastboot reboot and have that work. Any ideas or suggestions?? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, wasn't sure about the META-INF folder. Going to try installing button saviour. How did you "push" preferences from your phone to the watch? I have root/su on my Xperia Play so I should have the files there to push?
Did you personally get the Google Apps working?
EDIT: Everything is forceclosing on me. :/ Installed the Stock Browser from my XP but that's forceclosing as well. Attempted to change the permissions of the applications but either it didn't work or it didn't help.
I couldn't figure out how to push preferences, but I was able to tell Superuser to allow all apps after remapping Start to Menu, then just doing Superuser > Menu > preferences. You could always do this to get Superuser working, get Button Savior working, and then revert it back.
(I made a step by step on Pastebin, but if you use Oneroot, it might do all this for you: http://pastebin.com/AZRemesV )

Thanks a lot. Just did a factory reset, figure I'll start from scratch. Did you get the Google Apps working after Superuser was configured? What Browser are you using? (Dolphin was forceclosing for me every time I went to type.)
EDIT: Got Superuser working, did the keyboard hack to make Start=Menu. Anybody know what button Music is mapped to in the configuration?
Going to fiddle around some more w/ Google Apps. Anybody have a walkthrough of installing the apps? IE Which ones you must do, don't have to do and what to do to get it working.
EDIT: It was WAKEkey 378. It was set to "MEDIA" so I changed it to "HOME". Works perfectly!
Hanging at the Red Moto Logo
Followed the instructions and had it working rooted, etc. Was going to change out the launcher. And obviously did something wrong. Now it just just hangs at the Red Moto logo. Can get it to power off and can still get it to the fastboot mode. Have tried reflashing the system and userdata, wiping the user data, etc. Any suggestion on what to try next?

We have been working on this for a while. We are planning on working on a thread for this.
Currently I have Spotify and Sportstrack Pro running well. I'll start to compile a list of working applications.
If you're stuck in a boot loop, you'll need the userdata partition image. I'll edit my post with it once I'm on my computer.

Go launcher working!!

New method.
I have figured out a safer way to install a custom launcher. Your device still needs to be rooted.
1- Download the launcher of your choice from the Play Store.
2- With a file manager of your choice navigate to data/app folder, this will have all the apk's you've downloaded from the Play Store. (the name of the apk will look different ie: nova launcher is named "com.teslacoilsw.launcher.apk" )
3- Move launcher apk to system/app folder install or reboot(the permissions should already be set to rw-r--r-- so no need to change them)
Personally I like using Rom Toolbox Pro/Lite(can be found in play store, i bought the pro version for more options), I have no affiliation but this app is great and you should check it out. It has every different tool for root users you can think of. In the App Manager section if you long press on any app there is an option to "convert to system app", no moving, cut/paste, or installing.
This should help avoid getting some screwed up apk file from an alternate source and messing up your device.
As always try at your own RISK.
I would recommend checking out this thread before messing around with your device:

I completely feel ya, try at your own risk but definitely worked with mine.
I didn't need to restart but I can confirm go launcher and Nova are working. I'm sure any launcher will
Well maybe some of these other launchers are better but all I want is the android look to tell the truth with icons so ADW Launcher EX without rooting is fine by me to get away from the carousel.
Works great. Thank you.

For me its not even about which launcher is better they all have pros and cons, but i personally like to use my home button. With this process you can set the launcher as default. Not be bounced back to the stock launcher every time you use the home button and have to reload a custom launcher. Too much of a hassle for me and takes away from the experience.
This method also worked with Go Launcher HD, it looks better then then regular Go Launcher imho.

It does i agree, but is there a way to hide the notification bar and action bar on hd version?
I didn't find the way to hide NAV bar. All works perfect with Go launcher HD. I am sure that nobody want to try removing NAV bar, cause it is a high risk of breaking your KFHD. Auto-hide in this case would be great, but i can't understand when NAV bar hides. I suppose it hides when there is in exit button, or return button in running apk. IMHO.
How do you change permission on a non rooted device. I downloaded the go launcher hd all v1.17. I tried rebooting and nothing. Can I do this on a stock fire. If so can you provide a step by step. I tried moving the apk to system/apps but says the apk cannot be moved. Thanks

There is a setting in go launcher ex that allows you to hide nav and notification bars, the little tab is still visible at the bottom or side of screen so you can open them with ease. Gives the tablet a full screen. I love the look of the hd version but would rather have the full screen, wish the would put this option on the hd version

you cannot change permissions of system files or anything about them unless the device is rooted. This keeps the average person from screwing up there device.
Lockscreen?
Guys, have any of you had luck with the lockscreen for GoLauncher? I tried GoLocker and i had to go through the original Amazon Kindle Fire HD lockscreen and then to the GoLauncher Lockscreen. SO, basically, i had two lockscreens going on at once. Is there a fix for this?

Happens with the KF 1st gen also but I never bothered with it. Might want to look into the KF 1st gen and see if anyone found a way around it.

To get go launcher ex working on the KFHD I took these steps.(On rooted device)
1- download the Go launcher ex.apk from a third party (from play store will not work)
3- change permissions to rw-r--r--
2- using a file manager find the apk and move to system/app folder.
4- reboot the device.
When it reboots there should be a message saying "kindle is upgrading".
Then it should prompt you to pick which launcher you want to use.
If you did not get the latest version you can now go to play store and update.
I assume this will work for other launchers though i have not tried it.
Finally I feel like im using more of an android interface(at least until someone figures out this bootloader problem and i can flash cm10)
I just downloaded go launcher hd and did not change permissions, still worked. Could someone tell me if this is necessary. I just copied the permissions of the stock launcher when i loaded the ex version so i assumed it was necessary they were the same

I did step by step like you, but after restarted my KFHD freezing at KF logo, please help me to fix it.
First question, did you install this app in the /system/app folder, AFTER you placed it in there? You must install the launcher after it is placed and permissions are changed. It appears you may have a soft brick if that KFHD isnt booting at all.

WELP! That doesn't seem like a great scenario to be in. If this was me, I would connect it to my PC and pray that while you're stuck in that logo limbo it would still give you connectivity. I would then go into the /system/app through your PC (on your KFHD directory) and physically remove the launcher files. Then try a restart.

widgetlocker

Widget locker works on the kindle fire 2, download said app from the play store and move the app to system/apps permissions are already set. After the app is moved install it and re boot and voila custom lock screen

My bootloader hasnt been unlocked or broken in any way. Im using the kindle fire 2nd gen, and personally i prefer safestrap by hashcode over anything else, for the simple fact that it makes it alot easier for me to prevent any kind of brick.
Just so i know, has anyone used this on the kfhd And how well does it work? From my understanding it should work just the same as on my kft but i may be wrong

WidgetLocker Lockscreen by Teslacoil Software
To All-
This is now a paid application and so we are not taking from a fellow developer, here is
revised instructions:
Lock Screen Step 1: Open Google Play Store, Search for "Teslacoil Software".
Lock Screen Step 2: The search results will return about 6 choices. Choose
"WidgetLocker Lockscreen"
Lock Screen Step 3: Next, pay $2.36. Then you will be presented with an
option to "Install". Choose "Install".
Lock Screen Step 4: Next Reboot. There is an odd bug if you do not Reboot,
so immediately reboot after the install has completed.
Lock Screen Step 5: Next, open Root Explorer. Using Root Explorer, Move
com.teslacoilsw.widgetlocker-1.apk from /data/app to /system/app
Lock Screen Step 6: Check the permissions of com.teslacoilsw.widgetlocker-1.apk
should be Owner: Read Write, Group: Read, Others: Read and Change
the Owner to 0-root.
Lock Screen Step 7: Reboot the Kindle, wait for the Kindle to Upgrade
Lock Screen Step 8: Launch Widget Locker and configure as needed.

KindleFireGuy and idontwanttobeanoob,
I new you must have been out of town since you are very good about responding to threads.
Also, it has happened to me. It is really hard to keep up with the software vendors, what is
free today may be a paid application tomorrow and just like that you have gone from a legitimate
post to an illegal post. The bottom line is: As long as you remove the link once you have been
made aware of the issue, there is no problem. Everyone have a great 2013 and than you for
taking care of the problem idontwanttobeanoob.

[Tutorial] [OTA 3.0] [Nvidia Shield Tablet] How to debloat and optimize ota 3.0

DISCLAIMER: though this seems safe, there are always risks. Warranty may be void, bugs might crawl out of your shield. I am not responsible for mishaps, bugs, crashes, damage, loss of jobs, girlfriends, and/or if your shield turns into Skynet and begins to destroy the human race!
Firstly, throughout this tutorial I will be shamelessly pointing you toward others threads. Please, give them your thanks. They are masters in their fields and with out them none of this would be happening! Also remember noone gets paid for any of this, they with their skills and I with time do this out love for tech and a desire to help others and see them enjoy their tech as much as we all love ours. That said... Onto the cookies!
*********PLEASE NOTE*********
*********THIS ENTIRE PROCESS CAN BE DONE WITH OUT ANY ACCESS TO A PC!
--BUT--
TO KEEP A LOCKED BOOTLOADER AND AVOID WARRANTY NASTYNESS PLEASE READ
*If you are still on a locked bootloader, and want to easily keep it. Root ota 2.2.1 first, install flashify, and use it to install twrp.
*Rooting ota 3. 0 and using flashify from there will also preserve locked bootloader.
*Rooted ota 2.2.1 or a custom recovery will break nvidias native ota system. You will have need a copy if the FULL OTA from the links provided. They flash easily in twrp. But ONLY THE FULL OTA, NOT THE INCREMENTAL.
******PREREQUISITES (These Are Required)******
*Must be rooted.
If coming from stock, (unrooted, stock recovery, and locked bootloader) Kingroot will root any ota so far.
Install apk, run it, it will most likely reboot your shield, on ota 3 it will freeze, (mine did at around 30% on ota 3, but instead of a reboot, I got a freeze) this is normal. Hold power button until the shield turns off. Boot back up, and run Kingroot again. It should now complete fine, installing Kinguser as root control app. This gives you enough root to run flashify from play store to install the next step. (thanks to China for making kingroot and whoever translated it for us)
Kingroot link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/one-click-root-tool-android-2-x-5-0-t3107461
*Team Win Recovery Project (twrp) must be installed.
Head over here to @Steel01 thread for multi rom twrp. You will only (at the moment) need his modified twrp build. More instructions there. Don't forget to thank him! (Thanks @Steel01)

*BusyBox - Busybox is required for viper4android install. Make sure to run and install it BEFORE YOU INSTALL VIPER DRIVER. The apk can be installed, but when you run it. It will try to install the viper driver. Selinux must be set to permissive, and busybox installed first.
It can be found in play store.
*selinuxmodechanger can be found in fdroid repository.
*ViPER4Android audio engine (thanks @zhuhang)
For viper install. Be sure to install fdroid and get selinux mode changer. And change to permissive BEFORE YOU INSTALL VIPER DRIVER. the app is fine but for the driver to install selinux must be set to permissive. After that it's fine to set it back to enforcing.

Someone said cookies? (Procedure)
**tip** titanium backup SUCKS FOR backing up app data. Bugs out the apps sometimes. So for games, manually backup saves and place them back after reinstall. It's helpful to use tibu to backup your apps alone. Then use tibu again to make a recovery flashable zip to reinstall them all at once....
*Firstly you will need a root enabled file browser (I use es file explorer)
*On the internal memory, firstly back up any pics or ANYTHING you want saved from internal memory to the external SD card. (I usually name my backup folders starting with a # to keep them separated from anything that's written to external via an app or the system. Helps to keep track.)
*Next delete it ALL. In es file Explorer just as everything in sdcard0. /android gone, all folders, ax them. I even nuked the hidden folders and all. I wanted a totally clean install. So anything in the /sdcard0 folder can get wiped. As wiping through twrp DOES NOT WIPE THESE FILES. And sometimes can cause oddness on new installs. This can also be achieved through twrp but it takes longer. Keep in mind that everything inside /sdcard is rebuilt on FIRST boot. Hence deleting in twrp. Don't navigate to straight / things go bad if you mess about in those files....
*After everything has been deleted on internal, and the folders your not using for backups on external. Namely the /android folder on external. You should be ready to reboot to recovery....
*Now reboot into twrp. Click wipe, advanced, then check dalvik, system, data, and cache. Wipe
*Now flash the FULL OTA for your model of shield.
*Next click the home button in twrp. Then Mount, then, uncheck the box for system, then, re-check it. (remount system)
*Now click on the Home button again, Advanced, File Manager.....
*Now the fun part...
Navigate to /system/app and delete the following FOLDERS, contents and all, by clicking on each folder one at a time, once clicked, it will show you contents of that folder. At the bottom click select, then delete, swipe to delete. For each of the following folders....
++*NOTICE* Some of these folders contain libs (library files) and i discovered some issues with deleting them. (videos not working, possible connection console mode crashing, etc) These folders are indicated below, and any side effects possible due to its removal. Console mode has been solid so far even without the libs. That doesnt mean that it wont cause any issues later and i just havent seen it yet. So BEWARE o0o0o =D
Adobe reader
Books
Calendar
++**Chrome (I use chrome beta) (CONTAINS LIBS) possible connection to the "great chrome slowdown" These ARE SAFE to remove and removal may cure the slowdown bug. either way, using any browser BUT chrome (i.e. Chrome Beta, Dolphin, Opera etc.) also fixes the "Chrome slug races"
Cloud print
Input methods for Japanese and Korean (unless you need it)
++**Drive (CONTAINS LIBS) i havent noticed any side effects from removing these and SHOULD BE SAFE to delete. also i use es file explorer for drive access
Email (I use inbox)
Evernote
Evernote widget
Exchange2
Gmail (I use inbox or reinstall from store)
++**Hangouts (CONTAINS LIBS) i use hangouts for OUTGOING PHONE CALLS, as such i feel these libs are POSSIBLY NOT SAFE to remove. i havent found any issues so far but BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY on an essential core sytem
Holo spiral
Google tts (optional)
Juswrite (I don't use the stylus or handwriting)
latinIME (aosp keyboard)
++**Maps (CONTAINS LIBS) i havent found any issues but NAVIGATION to me is an essential core system therefore i feel these are POSSIBLY NOT SAFE to remove. again BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY
Music2 (I use gonemad music player or reinstall from store)
Newstand
Nvcameraawesome (it sucked and I use camera51)
Phase beam
Play games
++**Print spooler (CONTAINS LIBS) never use(d) it so i dunno really. SHOULD BE SAFE to remove (feedback welcome)
Street
Stylusmobileoem (like I said I don't even HAVE a stylus (unless someone has an extra they are willing to mail....)
Talkback
Trine 2 (unless you like it)
Twitch (unless you use it, also in play store)
++**Videos (CONTAINS LIBS) I had issues playing embedded videos in play store (app trailers) and some websites. i would recommend DO NOT REMOVE THIS. i ONLY left this here for info only. remove ONLY AT YOUR OWN RISK
Write (again with stylus stuff)
++**Youtube (CONTAINS LIBS) never had any issues removing this. but i feel it could be related to my above mentioned video playback bug. this is OPTIONAL.
*now navigate to /system/priv-app
Delete folder musicfx (needs to be gone or disabled for viper4android audio install)
*now navigate to /system/vendor/app
Delete the folder watercolor (dabbler can be gotten from play store)
*if you feel busy /system/media/audio is where the ring tones are and you can delete the ones you don't use for more space but it's only 3mb....
*FINALLY hit the home button in twrp again.
**DO NOT FORGET** Install superSU beta for root!!!
*REBOOT!!
*After system boots up and gets done optimizing, it's safe to reboot back to twrp and flash the xposed framework.
*You're done! That's it... Wait... What? You want even MORE cookies? Well, OK....
*Keep reading for optional steps for even better results!

And some more post script.
PPS **tips**
*System apps always keep a copy of themselves for when it gets updated, so all those apps (that you just deleted) end up being over 400 mb after they all update once. And they ALL HAVE updates at time of install. So you save there. Just takes a minute to reinstall as user apps from the play store, and save a bunch of space.
***WIFI ISSUES!** If you do NOT HAVE a 5ghz router. Go to wifi settings, advanced, wifi band, switch from auto to 2.4ghz, makes the Web run faster and if it's set to auto I notice a good 40 second delay in wifi connecting. Also make sure the box "wifi always scan" is turned in. Otherwise wifi doesn't auto connect at boot.
*Get folder mount from the play store. It automagically patches android to let apps write to external SD. As well as links folders on external to internal so you can move ANY app to sd card. Profit!
*For a cleaner install. Install fdroid, then ad away. And run ad away before you ever open more than play store for es file Explorer to install fdroid. This way ad away is the first or one of the first apps to open. Blocking ads from that point on. That way if apps have built in ads, they won't even be able to load!
*Also thanks to @djdarkknight96 here's a link for a bad ass themed SwiftKey keyboard
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016053
*To improve system responsiveness, enable developer options (In settings, click about tablet, click build number 7 times.) Then in developer options about midway down, turn "window animation scale" "transition animation scale" and "animator duration scale" from 1.0 to .5 this increases the speed of animations throughout the system/rom
*After installing the gravitybox xposed module, you can turn those 3 animation scales down further to .25 for even faster response.
*Native lcd density for shield tablet is 283.
It comes stock at 320
*Nvidia corporate tegra color scheme. Green is hex (#76b900) rgb (r:118 g:185 b:0), and grey, hex (#5c5c5c) not sure greys rgb. And black.... I looked it up in their corporate and product guidelines pdf.
*You can add apps to console mode by clicking the little + symbol under "android games" and "media apps" in shield hub. They will then be added to the "easier" to navigate shield hub menu.
*In the play store kernel adiutor (yes that's how it's spelled) allows control over the cpu speed and other critical stuff and things. To squeeze alot more juice from your battery, if everything else here is done, I found I could clock the cpu @2ghz (200mhz down from stock) and it's just as fast as true stock. Killer battery savings on top of the improvements already made in ota 3.0
*If you adjust the clock speeds in kernel adiutor... Make sure to reset the minimum to 51 every time and sit and watch to make sure they stuck. They will float around, then settle. But if you exit after altering the max and the minimum is floating high, it will set the minimum to that value.... Found THAT out the hard way......
*The letters that form the word "SHIELD" on the back of our devices.... Are stickers in small indents.... Looks really kewl if taken out. (see post #13 for pics)
+ *POSSIBLE USB ON THE GO (OTG) FIX*
Power off your shield, plug in USB OTG cable with a flash drive in it. Power on the shield. Once booted, pull flash drive and use whatever OTG compatible device you wish (mouse, keyboard, micro missile launcher--thanks ThinkGeek!))
ONE CONDITION! This method BREAKS CHARGING UNTIL NEXT REBOOT! (thanks nvidia!)
Enjoy!
Questions and comments always welcomed and encouraged!
If i forgot something, missed a step, whatever. Let me know!
I'll update/add to this if/when I think of things.
Ideas? Let me know!
CHECK POST #2 FOR UPDATE TIMES.
I'll try to highlight changes until I update again.
Look for the + symbol
Cheers,
Cyris
Mmm cookies just like mom makes!
Just a reminder! ALWAYS CHECK THE MD5 CHECKSUM FOR DOWNLOADED FILES. Md5 checker in play store works great. It can certainly save some headaches!
A SECOND MORE IMPORTANT REMINDER, KEEP A COPY OF YOUR FULL OTA IN THE ROOT OF YOUR EXTERNAL SD CARD. THAT WAY IF THE LIQUID DEFECATION TRULY STRIKES THE AUXILIARY ROTOR. YOU CAN USE NVIDIAS BACKUP STOCK RECOVERY (AT BUGDROID (ANDY ON HIS BACK WITH A RED ! OVER IT) HIT "VOLUME UP" + "POWER") TO WIPE DATA AND FLASH A STOCK FULL OTA AND GET BACK UP AND RUNNING AGAIN. THEN USE KINGROOT, THEN FLASHIFY, THEN TWRP, TO GET ROOT BACK AND CUSTOM RECOVERY....

No worries. I created this thread for a laid back easy way to (try) and get the most from our device. Xda was always my go to place to find help and it's a bit different now. Not everyone is a developer, but it shouldn't be hard to get knowledge from those that are. Hell I'm no dev, just like to test stuff, a crack flasher. But at one time I didn't know what root was..... We all were. I know I love it when I show someone my device I spent 100s of hours tweaking just right and the look on their face! At one time that was me. I had to ask questions that probably got a few chuckles. But usually there was someone there to ask. If i can help I figure I SHOULD,
As I said I encourage questions. It may help someone else later on. Cheers!

All is well. And the wipe, install directions from TWRP went flawlessly.
As soon as it booted, I was presented with the Welcome screen, as if it were a brand new device, unlike just updating an older OS. Chose the language, if I had a Google account & signed in...all that cookie dust. Apps from the list I have backed up to the Google servers under my account downloaded & installed automagically.
And best of all....no more "Android is Starting" & no more "optimizing the apps" at cold startup! Big thumbs up there! :good:
By the way, I could not get the full install from the link you provided from another user. It went to Mega & Mega is having transfer issues. It would download about 10 thru 15 % then flash something about a transfer error, then reduce the file transferred back down to 8 or 9 %...then download that again up to around 12 % or so, then back down to 8 %....lather, rinse, repeat...indefinitely! I used this user's link in his post to get the correct ROM: Android 5.1 out now
Just an FYI there.

It's an 8 inch screen. With a resolution of 1920x1200 I'm not sure the math, but it adds up to 283,or there are a few sites that you can go to and enter your the screen info and it will tell you what you density is. Density is how many pixels are in a square inch. Also GSM arena and a few other sites show this data if you Google "shield tablet specs".
Switching from 320 to 283 just makes the screen look sharper. It also can effect what games are listed as compatible in the play store. Example, dead space and dead trigger 2 will not install @ 283. But will run at it. I have dead space myself and it plays fine but I have to side load it or set my density back to 320 in build.prop then install it.
Think of it like running different resolutions on your pc monitor. The monitor will show them just fine, but only 1 is the exact spec from the factory, and look the best.
Thanks For This
Hi, @Pariahnoble. Just wanted to say that this is great, exactly the kind of effort that supports the XDA community.
I am sure that this will be a huge help to a lot of people.

Thanks! =D Just hope it does in fact help some folks enjoy their shields a little more. I've been pretty unhappy so far, it was this or a Nexus 9, now I don't regret my decision anymore lol

I'm surprised there aren't more comments on this thread. This looks great.
By the way, did I miss something or can this actually be done completely without the use of a computer?

Nope didn't miss a beat. This whole process can be done with no pc (I don't have a pc, my shield is my ONLY device.) so I've learned how to do it all locally (on board the shield itself).
This is only just now available, 5/13 kingroot was released that would root the tablet stock off the shelf. And flashify to put on the custom twrp. After that it's good times!
Ps, thanks for the heads up on the no pc thing, I forgot to mention that, OP updated...
That's great news for me since my computer recently took a **** and I'm about to throw my old laptop out the window. (windows vista, won't take adb drivers, runs out of memory using chrome, etc...)

Ouch! I feel your pain. I recently had to try to flash using add (adb but "add" was a great typo) on Windows xp.... Oh yeah... THAT went well.... Then 2 days later kingroot came out.
Just make sure (and I'll add this to the op as well) to keep a copy of the full ota on the ROOT of your external SD card, that way if your shield take a flaming deuce in your hands, you can STILL use nvidia backup recovery. If you have ever seen the "bug droid" (ole Andy on his back and the flaming red ! Over it) hold the "volume up" button and hit power and the nvidia recovery comes up. Let's you flash a STOCK FULL OTA and bam, back in business, just kingroot, flashify, twrp, keep calm, and carry on!
Man, I'm glad you said something! I'm gathering all the files on my external sd card in a folder (downloads/Shield Optimization) and I was getting ready to take the plunge. I'll move everything to the sd card's root before I get started.
I'm also considering backing all of my sd card to a work computer temporarily so I can reformat it. My junk heap of a laptop can't read it but I suspect my shield may have formatted it to a weird..... format.
I just want to have the card ready in the event I want to transfer large files and not wait as long.
Speaking of which, would I be able to format my sd card via my PC with it still in the Shield, connected by a usb cable?
Sorry if I'm getting slightly off topic.

@radio five
Firstly the only file you really need in the root folder is the ota zip. That's only because I'm pretty sure that's where the stock recovery will look for it, IF everything goes to hell.
Yes about formatting your card or storing files elsewhere during all this. The closer to a fresh card and internal memory the better.
Not sure what if any besides ntfs that the shield would format it to. But ntfs is recommended. And it's so far the only (I think) supported format for cards over 32gb. Also. After you format it to ntfs, quick format is OK, full is better but much slower on Windows, make sure to name it. Any is OK. "Sdcard" works.
In Windows Explorer, click on the volume (Sdcard you just formatted) to select it. Wait a sec. Then click it again. And name it when it highlights.
It fixes SOMETHING, Noone really knows what, but makes the shield recognize SD cards over 32gb
I'm sure there IS a way to format via adb, but I have no idea how...
What topic? >.< lol all questions are encouraged.
