[Q] OPDS Library searching - Nook Touch General

Has anyone found an application that allows/works for searching OPDS Catalogs? When ever I search with FBReader my NTG will reboot itself. I have always used FBReader on my tablets and phones and the search works fine on them. I recently bought 2 NST and another NTG for the rest of the family. I have not tested this on a NST but my NTG will not search with 1.2.1 firmware nor would it search when I had an earlier version. I have also tried Cool Reader and it does not seem to search though it does not cause the NTG to reboot. I could not get Aldiko or Moon to install to test them.
Anyone have any ides/thoughts?

I will install and try FBReaderJ tonight and see if it works.
I am not holding my breath based on this issue on the github for FBReaderJ:

This is exactly what I get.

I did try the latest version of fbreaderj and it still caused the device to reboot when doing searches on OPDS catalogs...

Just wanted to let everyone know that the nook versions of Page Turner Epub Reader in this forum does work for searching. I do wish it supported adding more than one OPDS catalog though.

Google Books (wifi only) fix

Google Books website has the solution, although it took some digging to find it.
Go to Settings...Applications...Manage...All
Scroll down until you see "Google Partner Setup"
Open it
"Clear Data"
reboot
You should now be able to launch Google books and see the 3 preloaded books.
props to girkmonster
+1 this should get stickied its def a working fix!

Worked for me. Thanks for the info.
U.S. only perhaps?
I just factory reset my xoom to take back (to get the screen fixed) - or i would have tried this in uk...
... re set up my device anyway - done the above - and no google books... doesn't seem to work on the UK vers...
https://supportforums.motorola.com/message/365897
Lothaen, I cant even install google books in the uk, market says its not available on my carrier, but it's a wifi xoom... any ideas?
Google books is only available in US.
There are ways to install it anyway, but what's the point? You can't buy any books anyway if you are not in US.
I thought it was pre-installed....
also i thought(hoped) you'd be able to add your own epub/pdf's in.
I'll have to get alkido again then

I was also interested in this and searched a little. I didn't find a way to side load anything to google books app, so I didn't see a point in trying to get it working.
But there was a thread here where was a guide how to get books working, of course i'm not sure if it will work on the European Xoom. Try to search if interested.
I'm in exactly the same position Lothaen, Books is a non-starter for us in the UK.
I am wondering though if one of our American friends with root access could backup the Books apk with Titanium and let us have it? Don't know if it's possible but worth a shot... can anyone help please?
In the meantime I'm using Nook as Aldiko keeps FCing on me.

We can use it. I have the mobile version on my phone and I can download all the free books. Also it looks pretty.

This is interesting, I searched but didn't find anything about sideloading, other then forum posts saying its impossible.
Does the UK Xoom have books under Settings> Applications?
If it is there, then a how to get it working is posted somewhere here in the forums.
Sorry I edited my earlier post as I thought I'd seen a post on sideloading but can't find it anymore.
Books isn't on by default on the UK version

Can't search Market and Opera / Stock Browser FCs

Rooted my NST today( just got one ) and am on 1.1.2 firmware, everything seems to be working ok except I can't search the market. I can install apps from the market just fine, but when I search it just shows a blank list like it didn't find any matches ( although I know there are matches )
Also, opera mini and the stock browser both FC after opening before it renders the first web page.
Any fixes for these out there?

In another post the search issue was confirmed as being an issue with the Google Play from Google Market upgrades( even though we use the market.apk ) ... Using the SearchMarket app on the Play Store allows you to search as a work around.
Uninstalling Opera Mini and installing Opera Mobile fixed the browser crashing issue.
It's been about 16 hours since I rooted or so

Sorry, it wasn't a post, got a private message from eded333 containing the following pertaining to search in market functionality...
Well, a similar issue happened on early stages of the way we installed google apps, probably market needs an update to work correctly as Googleplay or the new 1.1.2 update has broken search functionality again, when I have time, I'll look into it.
In the mean time, install from the market webpage on the pc Searchmarket (https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...JjaG1hcmtldCJd) select your NST when it asks you, which will maybe appear just as phone, connect the NST to your wifi, and open market, wait a minute or two, and the app will install.
This app will work as a substitute to the search functionality on the market while its broken.

Google Play on rooted Kindle Fire unable to find common apps

So, I used SuperOneClick on my Kindle Fire and it worked great. I've installed GoLauncherEx and I'm up and running mostly fine. What I've found strange is that, while I was able to find certain apps when searching on Google Play and install them on my Atrix, I can't seem to find all the apps when I do the same on my Kindle Fire. A couple examples of this are: Google Maps and Any.Do. Even when I directly search for these by typing in their exact name they're not on the list that shows. I have tried to install apps that 'aren't compatible with this device', but I guess I'm not surprised seeing the KF is not a full blown smart phone. Still, Google Maps and my Any.Do (a task list program) shouldn't give me trouble. Is there some setting that I'm missing? Has anyone run into this also? Thanks!

You need to edit your build.prop
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Yup. Just need to edit your device ID on your build.prop. Nice and simple.
Google just may be your best friend
If you don't want to edit the build prop flashing a new rom like gede or modaco are already modified to look like galaxy nexus and galaxy tab respectively. Then you can get maps because the kindle does not have built in GPS so it won't show up. Though those roms allow network gps. Hope this helps

version
Currently running v6.3.1. So, I guess I just have a stock rooted KF. Correct me if I'm wrong, thanks!
Before I posted here I watched the noob movie and I also looked on google for a solution. There are many different posts and I wasn't sure which would be good to use. Realistically, from what I found (even after searching on this forum too), many people are just saying to 'edit your build.prop'. That's great but edit it to what? Yeah, I understand that I need to change the manufacturer and model, but what are some actual examples so I get the format/syntax correct? Maybe I need to learn to use search better, but I'm surprised there's not a sticky for build.prop examples and the communities responses to those examples so we can build on what others have experimented with (and big thanks to those people!).
I'm also interested in installing CM7 seeing that seems to be a good way to go also. But there's lots of reading to begin to understand what's going on with all that. It's in process...
Thanks.
updated ROM. Done and done.
Took the leap and installed the most recent build of gedeROM. Took just a few minutes and all was done. POOF! All my problems got solved, at least those Android related. Nice work, Devs!
Thanks for the help!

Should my rooted NST be working better?

Browser crashes when I visit any page.
Opera mini never opens.
Kindle app is listed as Amazon.co.jp and I can't login. WTF?!?!
Market won't search or update to play store.
I can't scroll in the market to different app categories. Only the first page.
Is crap like this normal?
I updated to 1.1 and ran the Nooter project. I thought I did it right, but nothing seems to be working. What am I doing wrong, or is this just it? If so, I might sell the damn thing.
Opera Mini is a known issue. Try Opera Mobile. Which browser is crashing, Opera?
Market will not search or update to Play Store. This is a known issue. The NST runs Android 2.1, so is not compatible with the Play Store. However, you can use SearchMarket to work around this, and the old Market still works for updating and installing once you locate a package with SearchMarket. Again, this is a known issue.
Not sure about the Kindle app. I just see it as "Amazon Kindle" in ADW.
I'd suggest reading the installation threads all the way through so you're sure of what the current status of things are. You may well have had a bad root, but most of the things you've mentioned are known problems. The rooting procedure is a hack, after all, and can't make the underlying old Android OS work any better than it did.
FWIW: I've had good luck with TouchNooter 2.1.31, with everything working as described in that thread (not necessarily everything working).
thanks for the help. How am I supposed to install opera mobile if I can't search for it and I can't get to it in categories?
Scrounge up the apk from somewhere.
That's what I did but I forget where I got it.
I don't use Android Market or Play.

Installed the Kindle app via Google Play form a computer. It downloaded and installed when turning wireless on, on the Nook.

Did you try SearchMarket after 24 hours? Did you try installing from a web browser on your computer to install to your NST ("phone")? Did you try installing from the Amazon App Store? From your posts, it's not clear whether you did or not. You also haven't provided us with much info to try to help you with. Did you encounter any errors while rooting? Does anything else work?

OK, let's go through the issues here. I think I've got a summary here from the responses.
1. Don't know why ----------------------------Browser crashes when I visit any page.
2. Known issue (why in nooter?) --------Opera mini never opens.
3. Don't know why ----------------------------Kindle app is listed as Amazon.co.jp and I can't login. WTF?!?!
4. known issue (how to update manual?)----Market won't search or update to play store.
5. known issue --------------------------------I can't scroll in the market to different app categories. Only the first page.
The first one is the built in browser, I don't know why it won't work. It appears it does for others.
I didn't experience any errors in rooting that I know of, but here is my process.
1. ran nooter 2.xxxx
2. had issues, found out I was at NST version 1.01 and ran the wrong nooter.
3. did a hard reset through the button holding method to wipe all data.
4. updated to 1.1
5. ran same nooter again.
after that, the process appeared to work, but I'm having these issues. I might needed to do more and screwed it up. Hopefully this is clear. If it's not, let me know and I'll try to explain better.

The native browser is not fully functional, from everything I've read. TRY OPERA MOBILE.
There's another running thread in which I list the specific steps I've used on my NST, if you're interested.

[Q] Kobo app - reading books

Hello, so managed to bag a Nook Read Touch Simple for GBP30 and have got it rooted and market installed etc.
Also have been able to successfully install the Kobo app and download a book from it. However when I try to read a book from the kobo app, I get the swirly Kobo thing, the screen goes black and then it pops back to the Kobo app menu.
Anything I can do to get it to work?
Thanks in advance!!

You need an older version of the Kobo app. I'm successfully using 2.7.617 from an old personal backup from one of my previous Android phones.

Thanks again, tried that version and an earlier version, however I just keep on getting the swirly wheel on the books. Some book so work if I enable "original content" or something like that, but the quality of text isn't the best.

I can't post URLs because I'm too new, but if you do a Youtube search for "Updated Kobo App Now Works on Nook Simple Touch March 2012" there is a video with a working Kobo app link. You may have to expand the first comment to see it. I've installed it on my Nook Touch and it works fine. I don't think it's a modded apk, just an earlier version, so you may be able to get it elsewhere.
