[Q] [POLL] How important is THEME CHOOSER to you. - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Theme Chooser importance
Im asking three questions.
If you want you can give reasons why after you answer the questions.
1.On a scale of 1 to 10 how much does Theme Chooser mean to you?
2.If you flash a rom and it doesnt have this feature would you flash one that does?
3.Is higher benchmarks worth not have Theme chooser?
Please follow this format/after that your free to elaborate at the bottom.
Let me start with my answer.
1. 10
2. I would find one that has it.
3. No.
Explain: I can live with having the speed of most roms but i like to change up the look of my phone on the fly.
Ex: One day i may want Blue the next i may want Red/white/green whatever.

I don't even use it, I prefer the look of stock Jb.

1. 8 (I rate 8, coz I like themes to be included in android, which I loved on Nokia symbian devices. But I do like minimal) Cool to have it as part of customization.
2. If that's not available in Stock latest version of android then so be it. (I also prefer stock as much as possible)
3. Stability, Fast and Battery performance is on my top priority.

1. 6
2. It's OK. I rarely use a theme
3. Stability, battery life and speed rank way above theme for me.
Sent from my Nexus 4 in a Faraday cage

1. 4
2. I would get a rom that I like even if it doesn't have theme chooser
3. To be honest, I would prefer stability and battery life over both
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app

1. 7
2. Yes
3. No
I love the concept of theme chooser. I would gladly give it 10 if only I could download a theme. Pretty much ever good theme costs money and I don't have a credit card nor can I get Google play cards sooooo I can never ever try them.

I will rate 9 because i'm quite of angry about the uglyness of many stuff on Google Stock ROM.
Like the clock, just a poor circle or the battery, which we cannot guess easily how many %, or just the interface, too much thin, no modern, etc...
I love Artic Blue, but seens i have bought my Nexus 4, i cannot put it.
I do not want to flash CWM 10.1 because it's now pointless as Google Stock ROM is the same.
I'd just like an easy way to have T-Mobile Theme Chooser to be able to apply any theme i like.
Otherwise i'm happy with global performance, no bug issue, except the LED will never turn on unless using LightFlow... Which is a shame to have a Multicolor LED without any way on the basic system from Google to exploit it !!
So to answer your question, for me theming is extremely important as Default one are always ugly.

1. 0
2. No
3. Don't give a sh¡t about benchmarks.
I like modding my system ui by myself. I can then create my theme my self without theme chooser. I wouldn't recommend this if you don't know how to use Photoshop.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium

I like theme chooser. What I'd love is to be able to add it to a stock build without having to flash a ROM that uses it but I've not ever seen instructions for doing so. I don't know if it's even possible.

1.10
2.yes
3.benchmarks are overrated

3. No

10
yes
no, benchmarks are nice pissing contests but much much more

Perfect rom for you?

I'm about to cook again, and i'm somehow lost in what to include to somehow satisfy as many people as possible. I've stopped cooking for nearly one month, and i guess there are many new things out there. I'm going to take a look at the forums, but i think it's much more accurate if i ask people for their own opinion.
So here are the questions (i know there are many questions, so just answer some if you want, thanks) :
Which tweaks do you want to have pre-installed in the rom?
What kernel do you prefer?
What apps do you think are essential?
Any system apps you'd like to get rid of?
What theme would you prefer (must be the theme of an android phone, since i'm not good at drawing, only porting themes from other phones)? Also include please if you would like 9 ls, extended power menu, overscroll glow etc... Thanks
Any ported apps from other phones like sgs ii, sns that you'd like pre-installed?
Any other things?
What launcher?
So it's basically a query to find out what most users want in the rom.
There'll be addon packs also.
Thanks in advance
Regarding kernels my favourites are semaphore and talon.
TW3 works better than TW4.
I like redmanner stock theme.
Juwe ram script.

This guy said already all the important things. I took GingerReal 7.1.2 and i've been happy with it. Kernel mainly controls smoothness and quickness, but scripts and other tweak **** does nice things too.
I would have taken Talon 0.4.1 but for me it wasn't as much undervoltable as 0.3.1 or semaphore and 0.3.1 was for JVP, for now i will stick with semaphore 1.3.1
And as what comes to launcher, take spb shell 3d. You won't regret it, i didn't have much money at the time but 10€ for the launcher was well worth it, i haven't used ANY other launcher after 3 months.
And i have paid for launcherpro plus, but haven't even tried it after i bought spb shell 3d
I too like redmaners theme.i also like hardcores kernal.if you were to include a launcher I would use go ex launcher imho its the best free one, no way I would spend 10€ for spb total rip off, yes it looks good but 10€ ?for a launcher, lmfao.

Have used every Rom out there for galaxy s. I think presently gingerreal by redmaner stands out. It scores highly on all key fundamental requirements like speed coupled with stability and a very impressive battery life to backup a powerful phone.
I don't have the lagfix on and the speed of my phone actually surprises me.

Ah! Forgot to mention you might want to use adw launcher. Once customized properly it beats all others hands down. But the key is to understand its customizations.

Overglow scroll is a must and has to be in the same color
most feature i want: Stability, less FCs and restarts

- instant access call and endcall
- instant scroll to menu
- file explorer instant without lag
- and battery life (i cant call more than 4-5 hours with full signal edge, and the screen of, i dont belive we need 1000mhz to do this task)

Back to Stock ROM from CM10 and loving it ;)

Hellooo friends,
Yup its true. I just reverted back to Stock from CM10 and loving it.
CM10 is good and Jelly Bean but seriously pure Android is horrible with that Tron-ish look. Samsung UX looks polished, colourful and elegance with most of the things working. Here's a rundown :
Pros of CM10:
1. Jelly Bean (latest and greatest)
2. Smooth and Fast
3. No bloatware
4. Good Battery life
5. Pre-Rooted
Cons of CM10:
1. Ugly UI
2. Need to install app for everything
3. No DLNA
4. No WiFi-Direct
5. No Driving Mode (little gem I need)
6. Phablet UI or a not-so-good Tablet UI
Pros of Stock (4.0.4)
1. Polished, colourful, good looking UI
2. Smooth and Fast
3. DLNA
4. WiFi Direct
5. Awesome Music Player with Folder support
6. Powerful Video Player supporting almost all codecs with large Thumbnails
7. Mini Apps (yes they are very convenient)
8. Proper Tablet UI
9. Driving Mode
10. Power saving mode (and it works)
11. Equally good Battery life (compared to Cm9, 10)
Cons of Stock (4.0.4):
1. Unnecessary apps (Bloatwares)
2. Waste of Space due to high LCD Density
3. UnRooted es
I used RomsWell's Rooted, De-odexed, Zipaligned Stock DDBLF3 ROM. Thanks dude
Now can somebody tell me how to change LCD Density on Sock ROM ? There is no ro.sf.lcd.density entry in build.prop and I have read it in some places that changing density in Stock ROM can lead to bootloop and re-install
Any suggestions !

Beauty is a subjective thing bro'
What's ugly for me can be most beautiful for you and vice versa
I personally go for a cm rom on any device first. If you like stock rom but hate bloatware try metallice rc1.stock rom with many tweaks.basically fully optimized with oc support.had mine @ 1.38 and tablet was never faster.try it you won't be dissapointed.

I guess that is one of the greatest advantages when it comes to using an Android device. Whatever or wherever the itch... We will always find a tool / rom to scratch it

You missed some things:
With CM 10 you can enjoy gaming(I have +10 fps in gta3 with cm10(without OC)Also i can use 450mb ram instead of 350.
Powerfull music player?? are u kidding me the stock in is very bad, apollo and playerpro can do better.
"colorful" ui??? wtf???
Although i had to stay that the basic Samsung apps are quite enjoyable(video editors, photo editor, hubs etc)
I think we need a dual boot with stock and cm10
Back to stock too from cm9. And loving it as well. Missed the driving mode, better bluetooth usage icons, better phone dialer, and longer batt life. Not good enough for a gamer maybe, but good enough for this sales professional. This is all subjective of course.
Cheers.

I have to agree, but also love the beauty of each his own. I was regretting my tab, until CM 9 & now 10. The performance LAGGED with all the bloatware. Now it hums, makes phone calls, plays games and videos better then a Nexus 7 ( go figure)

I'd agree but once you are rooted and remove all the bloatware it is fast as CM10

iPhone 4 Owner Switching To The Nexus 4 - Questions

Guys,
I've just received my Nexus 4 after deciding to give Android a try. I've always been a big fan of all the Nexus phones knowing that they're completely free of bloatware and offer a pure Android experience as it was meant to be experienced by Google.
Currently, I have a jailbroken iPhone 4 16GB but I wanted to try something different after my 24 month contract and decided it a no brainer to go for the Nexus 4 16GB especially at the price Google Play are offering it at. Also I was getting bored of iOS and fancied a change especially given that the screen size of iPhones are pretty small in comparison.
However, I just have a few questions on how to do a few simple things as below if anyone would be kind enough to answer.
1. How can I get a battery percentage like I had on the iPhone? Any recommendations that work well with the Nexus 4?
2. I just want a black ground for the wallpaper to maximise battery life. How can I do this?
3. Is there a way to add toggles to the notification bar to enable or disable Wifi, Bluetooth, GPS, Location, Airplane Mode, etc?

Root + a custom ROM can solve pretty much all of this (except for the background)
1.) Many custom ROM's/mods have battery percentage available as an option, so the easiest way for you to get the battery percentage is to install a custom ROM. CM10 does this perfectly. For steps on how to root + install a custom ROM, try using one of the toolkits available in the Nexus 4 Original Development section, or try to find some guides in the Nexus 4 General section or the Original Development section. I'd link you to them, but I'm on my phone right now, and its too cumbersome a task to go back and forth between the browser and the XDA app. You could pm me however, and when I'm on my computer I'd be glad to help.
EDIT: Another way you could get battery percentage is using an app from the play store -
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.naeem.batterystatusnotification
It's not optimal, but it works.
2. Don't quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure a black background vs any other non-live background won't make a significant difference in terms of battery life. I think this is because the Nexus 4 has an IPS display. Super Amoled displays, however, are a huge culprit in terms of battery life and so a black screen is beneficial to only those with samoled screens.
3) Have you tried swiping down from the notification bar using two fingers? While those only act as shortcuts, they still do work. If you're not satisfied with this, get an app on the play store called "Elixir 2" and that should suit your needs
If you need anything else, feel free to shoot me a PM

1. I would also recommend you to root your phone and install a custom ROM, there you can change the statusbar with battery and clock and so on
3. As far as I remember you even have a widget on stock ROM for toggles. And if you want them in the notifcation bar you again should use a custom ROM. Some of some can change the quicksettings to real toggles.
I would recommend AOKP ROM but thats a matter of taste.
Power toggles https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.painless.pc will allow you to add some pretty looking toggle widgets to the notification bar. It also has the ability to add a the battery percentage to the status bar as a separate icon.
This is a good solution if you want to remain stock.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
You need to try awesome ROMs like aokp, but READ A LOT BEFORE!!
as for the background, I'm pretty sure it doesn't make any difference, just set brightness to auto.
there's an app in the play store called 'notification toggles', which does a pretty good job at bringing toggles to the notification bar.
and i would also recommend installing a custom rom, especially CyanogenMod, because that's the closest to aosp (vanilla android) as you can get.
just search for 'mako' (the codename of the nexus 4) on get.cm, and you'll find detailed instructions on how to unlock/root your device, and install cm. i recommend using the monthly/milestone release, is quite stable and bug free.

Paul O'Brian's Modaco rom changes the factory shortcuts in the notification bar into quick toggles. You short press to toggle, or long press for the shortcut. He makes two versions of his rom. One is based on the stock rom, and the other is built on Cyanogenmod. If you subscribe to his site you can "bake" your own rom with the features you want.
Wow tanks for the quick responses guys! Wasn't expecting this many suggestions seriously. Definitely a knowledgeable community!!
Right, I've installed a widget called battery percentage which has solved my problem. It seems very accurate so far too.
In regards to the toggles, I'm very happy with the 2 finger slide down option and I've learnt something new about my phone.
Got the brightness set to manual but at the lowest setting as this is how I used to use my iPhone most times to maintain decent battery life.
I'll see if I can download a custom wallpaper app that will allow me to change it to completely black and I'm pretty much done.
As much as custom ROM's sound tempting, I think I'll leave them for now as I'm extremely happy with the way the system operates just now. Leaving it stock will allow Google updates to be installed easily too.

Black backgrounds or any backgrounds for that matter won't make a lick of difference on an IPS screen. The light is shone from behind the screen and doesn't change in intensity based on pixel variation. The AMOLED screen is an entirely different ball of wax, where lighter pixels would indeed draw more power because the light is generated by the pixels themselves instead of a backlight.

Power Toggles is a near enough essential app.. You wont regret it.. plus you can change the icon in power toggles to show your battery percentage in the notification bar.
As youre new to android youll probably find many apps that are useful and satisfy your needs, but then you might start to notice the limitations of stock, resulting in eventual rooting and finally installing custom roms etc.
I use AOKP in which you get the toggle page by one finger swiping. I also use CircleMod which is built in and gives you the opportunity to replace the stock battery icon with it.
I rooted a week after I got this phone, and after the weeks I installed my first custom ROM. This is my first Android phone btw.
Thus AOKP or CM 10.1 would be your choice.

I uninstalled Battery Percentage for Power Toggles. It pretty much ticks all the boxes for me.
As others have stated don't use a black background to save battery. That is for amoled. If you like the look go for it but don't do it for battery.
Here is the fun part. You can download a app like wallbase for all types of wallpapers. Or you can just get a picture from anywhere you like. Drag one from your computer to the phones storage. Download any image with the phone browser or app. Open the gallery and set it as your wallpaper by pressing the menu icon. Set as....
You're not gonna believe this guys, after letting the battery completely die then performing a full charge, the phone will no longer connect to my wireless network.

If there is a very big wait time, I'll just get a refund and get another iPhone.

There goes this thread. Let the trolling commence.
In all seriousness, mentioning iOS aside from 'I left it for Android' is pure trollbait. Just for future reference.
Imagination is for turbo-nerds who can't handle how kick-butt reality is!
The wifi finally came back on me all of a sudden.
I then restarted the phone to verify if there is an issue with it or not and got the same problem.
Seems like the wifi is not activating when the phone comes on even though it's activated in the o/s.

Software - is it that bad?

Tempted to walk into my local 3 shop and pick one up for £399 looks like a great phone and will have better battery than Nexus 5 which is a big thing for me. My issue is the software, is it that bad out of the box say versus a Nexus 4 running on pure Android? Havent played around with custom ROMs but thinking I might have to with this device.

I had to apply a theme, which was super easy to get it to look the way I like: but the software doesn't get in my way. the phone is SO customizable that you can make it how you like. The phone is butter smooth and work great for me. I dislike only 2-3 minor things about the phone which can be fixed...
I'm running it stock: no root

I was used to running cm 10.2 on my lg g pro (the g2 is so much better imo) and the software is fine. I just flashed clean rom and a mod to get rid of the at&t logo and phone volume slider and I can't be happier. I also got rid of the soft buttons and use GMD, I almost never touch the back buttons with the knock on and made nova launcher double tap to lock. Pretty freaking awesome.

Came from GNex with AOSP ROM and I think LGs ROM is okay. I was expecting worse, but it's not terrible. There is way too much bloat (Verizon), but I will most definitely be install a custom ROM as soon as AOSP ROMs hit the grid. I do like the knock on feature and some other stuff they baked in though.
I have a few apps out of the box that are draining my battery at idle which I will have to figure out.

might help http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2456974
It's not that bad at all. Certainly better than Touchwiz. I actually like this LG UI more than any I've used outside of some of the modded AOSP ROMS (CM, AOKP, PA etc.). It has a few quirks, but nothing that I would consider to be a deal breaker.
I ran tw I ran aokp, I ran cm plus a multitude of kangs of all three including miui.
I am 5 days in and not once got bored, glitches, battery drains. Its got all the customazions I need, except dpi and permissions. I am cured flashaholic. That says a lot about the software coming from an avid flasher
I have been a big fan of cm for some time now and love the stock android look. I may very well install a theme to get this look at some point but I see no real reason to flash or even root at this point.
The software is smooth and customizable. It is heavily skinned in a love it or hate it kind of way, but themes make it far less of an issue.
Hope this helps!

so no thesoftware is not bad
I like it, it's smooth unlike touchwiz and mostly everything can be changed. Refreshing.

Came from a nexus 4 and I love the software.
My only wish is that I want more multitasking stuff (like TW's mutiwindow just without the bloat )
yeah multitasking is android 8ssue they implemented window support on an app per app and not os wide basis, thats why not all aps are launchable that way
The LG skin/software is awesome. I really like it. Its fast, fluid, and has many features. example: theme keyboard, theme ui keys, nav ring shortcuts, pop up windows for text and phone calls, etc..
With the nexus 5 predicted to have a 2300mAh battery and a worse camera at £399 it's a cracking deal for the LG G2. I work at 3 and am tempted to take up the deal.

The skin is more that adequate for anything you want to do. this isnt 2010 where htc sense and samsungs stuff blew ****. everything is great. whether it is motorola or sony's or whoever, they are all fine....
I hate that stock android is taken to the point of god like. its good. just like sense. or touchwiz. stock isnt better than either of them. they will all do the samething. in fact, often these skins on top have more options and are a fresh breath of air from stock
No I love the software on the g2. I had 2 s4's and both lagged and didn't run as well as I wanted it too. Great processor but software bogged it down. I like this phone so far for its software and its beautiful screen. Samsung threw whatever they thought up into tw and it was a lot of junk I personally didn't use nor anyone that I know personally

Themes on Note 4 stock android?

Hey all,
Need a new Android phone and I think the Note 4 is the way to go, I've had one before and I enjoyed it but that was a while ago. Note 5 doesn't have the removal battery that I need.
I hate the Samsung theme though it's so ugly, so is there any way I can change it easily to something stock android looking with a custom rom?
Thanks

I love my Note 4 so I would highly recommend it. The Note 5 is a total deal-breaker for me with no removable battery and no SD card slot either. The mind boggles with those choices by Samsung. Anyway, I totally support the move to the Note 4. It is a damn fine phone. Although the second poster is right, the camera can tend to lag. But personally, it's not a big issue for me. In fact, I've just upgraded to an S7 so we can sell it and get a Note 4 for my best friend. That's how much we love this model.
As for theme changing, the easiest way to do that is to just load a launcher onto your device. Even the best launchers have free options.
My top 3 favourite Launchers are Nova, Apex and LINE Launchers.
If you prefer fancy widgets and 3D options, look at Go Launcher or Next Launcher. But they are riddled with ads for their other products.
You will find a lot more options available through a Launcher in terms of customising your device to look and feel how you want it to. For most, it's as simple as downloading a theme and activating it through your launcher settings. Very easy and straight forward.
You don't need a custom ROM for that, http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/official-layers-bitsyko-apps-rro-t3012172
And this is one of the best time to buy Note 4 by the way, price is low, camera is still solid, one of the fastest I have used, don't know exactly how much faster the camera on the Note 5 is to call Note 4 camera laggy and slow!, but it is irrelevant to me, can't ever touch a mess of greasy glass nuisance.

Thanks everyone for your comments.
Anthro- I am receiving my Note 4 today and need it for a long plane journey so I can have a removable battery and keep a spare, also I want the SD card function to switch between the phone and my GoPro on holiday. Hopefully with a ROM like Dr.Keaton it will be fast and smooth. As for the theme advice, thanks for that but I like a full theme which themes the full system like the setting and pull down menu etc. I am sure Iw ill figure this all out tonight when playing with my phone.
I may consider the Note 5 in the future but I can't seem to get one in the UK at the minute.
Thanks again
