Smileys/emoticons in the default keyboard - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I love the default JB-keyboard, but for some reason the <3 is taken out of the quick-smileys(used to be there, when you longpress the bottom right key). I would like to get this back. Is there some way to add/edit/replace/remove smileys from the list that pops up?
Or is my only option to use 3rd party keyboard? It was ok in ICS on my Huawei Titan..

..and by the way, how the heck do I get a new line(where's the "enter"/"return"-key) now in SMS?!

Bump for justice..?

i'd like to know how to get the carriage return key back and get rid of the smiley button.

Well, the possibility is certainly there, since the smiley-button is replaced by return-key in all other apps than messaging.

+1 for the carriage return key. It pisses me off slightly that I can't insert a new line in SMS. Anyone with any suggestion/advice please?

Android keyboard swipe down to hide

So I normally use the HTC_ime but until a new one comes out with speech I'm using the stock keyboard.
This is totally stupid so if you all know don't bash me- but swiping down from the "t" to the spacebar will close the keyboard, just like better keyboard does. Beats the back key any day.
I've had android since the day it came out and didn't know that.
Yes and swipe left to right brings up the voice command.
Wow you guys are geniuses! I didn't know both of these commands xD. Thanks!
thanks for that T down swipe, I didn't know that and it's been bugging me bad
Nice! Didn't know either of these as well. Definitely useful.
Thanks the for T swipe down. I used to love to be able to hide my keyboard on the hero, so it's handy to know I can do it with the stock keyboard.
Haha, wow, was this always true? Ive had android also since before it came out(although there was no soft keyboard then) and I usually use better keyboard but I never knew, now I wanna know how long that its worked for.
Not sure how long that's been available. Since I had to use the stock keyboard I also learned that to save words to the custom dictionary you long press the word to save. Simple but with the HTC its just a simple press. Weird it took me so long o realize that. I can actually live win using the default android keyboard. And even better, with manups nextheme its the best looking one too.

Just tried on my hero and Dream the KB goes down with swipe.
Doesnt matter where you swipe down from as long as its on the keyboard "dosent have to be T"
yep, swipe down it works anywhere.
I didnt know either of those...either, Very cool thank you. Since swiping can bring up voice how can I get my comma button back? The microphone button (formerly MY comma button) now seems redundant...
Amazing, I would have never known!
The swipe across was in the manual, but I was wondering if it would work with the HTC_ime?
I would LOVE to get the comma back. Its a simple little thing but bothers me everytime I have to make a list or actually send an email (or more writing than a simple text).
Either disable the voice input in the kb settings (replaces the 'mic' key with the comma again) or long press dot.....
wow, I've used android for as long as it's been available and never knew this.

Only problem with this that it is it switches it off completeley - would be useful to have swipe for voice input AND the comma key
Yeah, comma on the keyboard and swipe to activate voice would be ideal.............

home screen for phone app?

since there is no phone/talk button, like on the g1, will we have to go to the home screen to use the dialer? Or is there another way?
i remember seeing a tiny app that puts a shortcut to the dialer in the notification bar, can't remember the name though ...
EDIT: try "bar control"
All seven of the home screens have a phone button at the bottom, so you're never more than two button presses from the phone. That said, I know it's possible to reassign a long press of the search button in Android, so it may be possible to map that to the dialer but I don't know for sure.
I guess it's not that big of a deal, once you get used to it, but I'm just so used to my mt3g.
It' gonna take awhile
I'll have to get used to it too. I've owned many Treos and WM phones, all of which had hardware send and end buttons. It's a first for me, but it's just one extra key press so it shouldn't be too bad. The bigger change for me is that this will be my first smartphone without a hardware QWERTY keyboard.
Also, I found this app which also adds phone and/or contacts to the notification bar: http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.application.dialeratbar2

on-screen keyboards

So, before I rooted and went to Eugene's new rom, I had the grey keyboard. Now I have the ugly black android one. Anyone know why or how to change it back? Thanks!
Okay so people are A) not gonna help you whatsoever or B) they are gonna come in her and be mean to you. I am not one of them. I think what you are trying to say is before you were using the HTC keyboard and now it switched to the Swype keyboard. Very easy to change. Long press a text box whether it be messaging app, browser or w/e you can type into basically. Long press in that box, options pop up. Choose Input method and change to which ever one you would like.
Thanks! I guess I dont remember having to have changed that before. I really appreciate it.

Hey
to sort the delay look in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT find CLSID reg/folder export it to my documents or sd card (doesnt matter where) then import it back & soft reset.
as for the arrow i find it helps to press just slightly to the right of the arrow instead of aiming directly for it.
hope it helps.
wow the solution makes no sense but it worked like a charm.
i would be glad to know what caused the problem and etc..

[Q] CM7 keyboard enable smileys

Hello,
Is there a way to enable smileys on the default CM7 keyboard (instead of the enter key). For example in the Gtalk app there is a smiley option, but I would like to have it by default everywhere (facebook, messages etc.) - any way to do this?
Cheers...
Wasn't it always like that? Have you enabled another keyboard? I had searched high and low for a keyboard which removed the smiley key and brought back the Enter Key for the Messaging App, and only about 2-3 weeks back I found it.
Well, since I've flashed CM7 I haven't installed any other keyboard. I also haven't fiddled with any keyboard settings. So I'm quite puzzled that I have the smiley button only in Gtalk and messages (sorry I was wrong in my first post, there IS a smiley button in messages). However, I would like to have it also in Gmail and pretty much any other app - for example Facebook or its alternative Friendcaster.
Any idea how to enable it?
Not without any 3rd party app (Also, I have no idea which 3rd party keyboard does this). The default Gingerbread keyboard is context sensitive, i.e. - for a fixed set of apps, it will show the smiley key, and, for another fixed set of apps, it will show the enter key.
Editing should be possible if you don't wish to go for the Enter key, but, are all your GMail E-Mails only 1 line messages? (Because, till date, all I have seen, you can either get the Smiley key OR the enter key, not both) I find it difficult to live without it in the messaging app itself, leave along Gmail and browser.
Anyway, to state again, editing the keyboard should be possible, but it needs technical know-how, and I can't help you on that.
Well you have a point there, that writing a mail without enter would be quite a problem ;-) Anyway, I guess I'll have to stick with writing smileys the long way (using "." long press) ;-)
Thanks for clarifying the issue.
Cheers...

One way to go around that is by making the smiley (or smiley menu) appear afther a long press on the enter button. There is a keyboard on the market ("keyboard from android 2.3") which does that, in the gui of (as the name says) the android 2.3 keyboard.

Thanks for that. It's indeed the perfect solution, but I thought it was unaccomplished till date
