[Q] Rooting without a MicroSD Adapter? - Nook Touch General

Hey there, XDA Members.
I have posted a few times, one because my device was bricked. I have reset my device, and was happy with it. Now, I want to reroot. It seems that I have lost my MicroSD card adapter, so there is no way for me to put the image onto it.
My point is, is there a way I can root my NST DIRECTLY from my PC?

No you cant. No way.

I would mostly agree with "No, no way".
For completeness, I would add that if you figured out the JTAG interface,
soldered on a connector and had a JTAG interface you could do anything you want.
The other way would be if you could get fastboot to work.
Just to be clear, these two methods are advanced and have never been investigated.

I suppose you could try using an android-based phone that is already rooted. A rooted android phone may have the ability to write an image directly to the sd card, and most android phones have micro-sd card slots.

Is there something wrong with going to Office Depot to temporarily buy the adapter, using it for this purpose, and returning it within 14 days of your purchase for a 100% refund?

evo usb cable problem..

Hello Im new to the forums
So I was trying to root my evo but i ended up messing it up. It wouldn't read the usb cable or charge and would also not read my SD card. I ended up being able to make it read my SD card but i still haven't been able to resolve the USB issue. I have searched several threads but all those methods of fixing the usb issue require your EVO to be rooted which mine is not.
does anyone know of a way to fix it without being rooted?
and i can't root my phone because it won't read the USB cable while the phone is booted up into android only in fastboot

Trying to follow your problem so I'm assuming that your cable is defective. The OEM (HTC) cable provided with my Evo was defective and I had to torque the cable back at the neck of the connector to get it to work but sometimes it would still disconnect. I just bought another cable from eBay and problem solved, I had it in two days and it was cheap.
well i don't think the cable is defective because i can still connect it to the computer in fastboot and run adb commands thru the fastboot
is there a way to run the usb fix through fastboot usb from adb in the command prompt? i read the thread in which it shows the commands needed to fix the usb not reading but it requires super user and i was wondering if you can run that through fastboot instead
the cable isnt defective, you bricked your phone by rooting it incorrectly.
It's actually really hard to brick a phone. Your phone does not energize when it's bricked, hence the name.
You actually don't need a computer to root your phone so the whole USB cable doesn't have to be an issue. I read a post a while back by XDA users that rooted their phones without a computer and then found this on YouTube. I have NOT tried this but it appears plausible.
HTC EVO 4G from Sprint - How to Root and Unlock Nand Protection - Full Root No PC or ADB.
You have to understand that it's really difficult to give you solutions without knowing most of the parameters of your technical challenge. I don't think your phone is bricked but a defective phone is possible hence its irregular behavior--and I mean defective before you purchased it. But persist with this and you'll find that you'll learn a lot in the process. Good luck.

Clockwork Mod without USB

I know this is possible depending on the phone, but on the Vibrant I have not found a way to install clockwork mod without using USB. I saw that mobile odin was an option for some samsung phones but not the Vibrant.
My usb port is dead, no warranty etc. I bought it for 70 in like new condition with knowledge that the port was bad. I figured that the port needed to be soldered back down. But after taking the phone apart, I don't see anything wrong with it. Its not loose on the board, but the socket itself is loose inside.
The baseband is KA2 Eclair. I got it rooted with the oneclickroot tool.
On a side note, the phone also came with pictures of the seller and all his girlfriends naked . Not pretty
So let me review what you want to do, you want to install CWR without having a USB port. Seems easy enough.
Firstly, find a app that will let you connect to your phone to your computer, apps like Dropbox, Box, and this app i put up on these forums a bit ago will do more than just the job HERE
install one of those, which ever you like. I'll use the MIUI File Manager as a example throughout this post because its the easiest.
Open the app, go to the FTP and start service, go to your computer open MY COMPUTER and type in ftp://all your #'s
Put this file in your ROOT meaning just in sdcard/ no folders just drag and drop it in there. DO NOT RENAME,EXTRACT OR ANYTHING TO THE .ZIP just put it in the sdcard/
*Thanks for the CWR file from Woodrube and S15*
Now go into Recovery mode on your phone
Power + Volume up and down ( i think )
Press REINSTALL PACKAGES
It SHOULD say something like booting into clockwork recovery.
it will reboot, if it goes to clock work recovery, GREAT. If not, press Reinstall Packages AGAIN and it should directly go there.
Just reply if i'm explaining something wrong or if you need more help.
Or you could just download and install rom manager and flash clockworkmod through there. No offense xriderx, just seems like a lot of work to just install cwr that a single app can do as well.

To each his own, Rom Manager never has worked great on my phone. Even bricked it completely once and I don't believe it was user error.
Relevant guide, +1 cookie. One suggestion though, organize the steps a bit further so there is a clear distinction between steps.
ie:
• Now go into Recovery mode on your phone, Power + Volume up and down ( i think )
• Press REINSTALL PACKAGES. It SHOULD say something like booting into clockwork recovery. it will reboot, if it goes to clock work recovery, GREAT. If not, press Reinstall Packages AGAIN and it should directly go there."
Anywho, to the OP: Since it's rooted, why aren't you simply downloading ROM Manager from the market and installing CWR from there?
edit/ beaten
Don't get me wrong, your tutorial is spot on, I just never had any problems with ROM manager before so I threw it out as a suggestion.

As far as the port goes, Eugene, Krylon360 and myself all fried ours when we were porting the V4G - so you may not visibly see anything wrong with it at all.
Thanks guys, I ended up semi bricking the phone . Even though it was my 6th droid device. Not sure what I did, I was in recovery and everything was working, then went to reboot and it was stuck on the Galaxy screen, could no longer get into recovery. Too bad that USB port was out . I ended up just reselling it to a guy for parts and still made some profit off it. Shame though, that AMOLED display was beautiful. Ended up getting a G2X yesterday for 195, just missed one at 150 on craigslist. Already got it up with CM 7.2 with a minor OC. Hopefully towards then end of this year I might be able to get a Galaxy 2 for cheap.
hi.
pls need help.
have the same phone. my usb is not working too.
t-mobile vibrant t959.
its CM7.2 skang-kang flashed.
have issue with mute-unmute.

i have tried this.
but gingerbread loader and froyo loader are different.
it gave an error at flashing and stopped flashing.
Hmmm. That would require fastboot huh. Don't know of a wireless way to use that. Is there an unroot procedure you could do from your sdcard without a cord and then re-root to gb perhaps?

and i'm asking for something like this.
but i ask for froyo not unroot.
to flash from sd card.
it gives an error

I don't think it is possible to downgrade to froyo from CM7 without ODIN. I might be wrong but that is how i remember it.
Though i did find this thread..

But i don't know how that worked for people. You might wanna research a little bit more. IMO you are better off going to ICS.

Just use Odin, don't shortcut it. The OP here has a very very basic idea of the reason and necessity to change these files, and has not provided a complete set of steps in two different "guides" he has posted here, and nobody has been successful as per the reports.
Bottom line, save both yourself and dev in the future a headache, and just use Odin.

its very sad ((((
Just a reminder to some who have USB port problems. I'm not trying to insult anyone's intelligence here but remember Samsung phones are picky about USB cables.
I know because my phone was Semi bricked while doing Odin. Turned out my original Samsung cable went bad halfway through Odin'ing a new bootloader. After two months of playing with it I tried literally 5 different data cables that all fully worked for other phones and a few cheap off the street cables. Some would not even charge my vibrant but would work fine for data and charge on my wife's LG Quantum. Hard to find good micro-USB cables here in Peru. Finally I ended up modifying my original cable with another cable's micro-usb connector and wrapping a separate ground wire around the shield to get it to work. Samsung phones must require really good shielding to communicate and possibly not all cables have the shield connected on both sides or are properly shielded.

[Q] A500 burnt out internal drive, how to run system from external SD?

Hi guys, I apologize for the very specific question, but I really need help and will try to be as informative as possible.
A few days ago, my tablet froze, and unlike the other times it's frozen, didn't restart automatically. When I rebooted it, it hung on the "ACER" boot screen. After hard resetting, and factory resetting after nothing else worked, I did some research, and found that I may have a burnt out NAND drive. ****.
Whenever I try to run NVFlash to read or write, I get the 0x8 error, "Fatal read/write error", which seems to back up the idea that the internal storage is shot. (And yes, I have the right SBK and everything, --sync works fine.) --- (Also, I spent two days learning an easy way to retrieve the CPUID from APX mode if anyone needs help with that.)
Blackthund3rs A500 APX Flash tool hangs on the "Uploading" part of the process. I tried both Thor's recovery and TWRP's recovery with the same results.
According to this topic it is possible to run the system from a micro sd card, though it will be slower than internal storage unless you have a class 8 or class 10 micro sd card. So I was wondering if there's any way to install a system, including rom, recovery, and bootloader, to a sd card to run on the A500? And if so, if it's ever been done before.
I really need this to work because I don't have the money for another tablet, and I don't want to spend the money for a whole new motherboard. If you can help me out, I'll buy you a drink.
Thanks,
-Tibyon

It was running OTA ICS. It was rooted. Acer's ICS update was never stable,
I would really like some input here guys.
Maybe just a bad sector in memory card. I read somewhere (old guy can't remember where) some one had the same problem. They did a scan an repaired (locked out that sector) then the tablet worked because it did not use that area of memory. This is how hard drive disks fix memory errors.
Google search of repair memory card might get you tools.
Sorry can't be more help.

[Q] Secure Erase?

I have a question. Let's say we don't want somebody to ever recover our stuff like user data and pictures on internal memory after we sell them a phone. What's the most secure and thorough way to destroy all data on the S4, making it impossible to recover, short of destroying the phone? As far as my experience..I am rooted, Ive used odin a bit, and Ive flashed several ROMs in the past. Help would be greatly appreciated!
Throw it in a fire.

Short of Daniel's suggestion, which is the best by the way to be absolutely sure of it; format your internal and externalSD cards (can be done inside of Android). Then use PC Odin to flash a stock ROM - all depending on what version your one now. Probably best to go with MK2 since you're selling it.

[Q] Is it dead?

So I apologize in advance, I am a n00b to rooting android devices.
Long story short, I think I hard bricked my TF300T.
I had followed some rooting guides (from other sites ) and yup, I'm stuck at the Asus logo with the "unlock" message in the corner.
I can't get into fastboot or anything else by holding Volume Down + Power, all I can get is my computer to recognize it as an APX device.
At one point previously, it almost bricked and froze at the same spot, but I somehow played with different reset combinations and it came alive again. Is there any reset combinations that worked for anyone?
Also, I remember doing a system backup within the device. Is there any way to access that, or is it gone?
In other words, do I need to buy a new motherboard? Or is there a remote possibility I can fix it?
One last layman question: why is it I can't just read and write to the device's internal memory, regardless of its status?

Looks like you will need to replace the mb, if you have not already generated nvflash binaries. You can't read/ write to internal memory because when connected to a pc this is done using the mtp protocol which os loaded by android, and hasn't in your case.

NvFlash blobs are specific to each device they are generated on.
Its like trying to infuse with a different blood type, where each tf300 has a different blood type. Wheelie will reject it and your tablet will reject it.

Here is a link to my guide to enter the bootloader.* Try these each several times as this tablet morphs as you progress.
Provide us a little more info.
What happened to create this problem? *Details please.
Did you have a custom recovery, rom, etc? *If so which ones?
Can you fix it; maybe. *We'll have a better idea once we know your details.

Thank you for that illustration. It did help me understand.
One last thought of desperation: Is the internal storage an actual SD Card? Or is it just called that on the device menu for some odd reason?

I was installing a custom ROM, when I went to "RCK"(?), it hung up when it said it was booting kernal. It didn't do anything for quite a while, so I held down the power buttong and reset it. And now it is stuck in the boot loop.

off topic but that is a pretty good analogy :highfive:
One question tearing me long enought: did someone tryed to hack nvflash binaries? As far as I know there is only one unique file and may be not all of it's content is specific for certain device. Did someone dig in that direction?

that would be really useful.
And although I understood the analogy, I still don't get the technical aspects of why you can have 1,000 devices that are all the same but they each need a different file. I'm used to building Windows computers, and you can use the same image repeatedly for multiple copies of the same type of computer.
I'm also wondering: why can't anything be installed straight from the SD card or even USB when a device is bricked? How does Asus do it when they fix people's motherboards?

Think of it like a cryptographic key. Each tablet's NVFlash blobs has a certain signature. To compare it to the Windows situation, assume that you have a legal, non-volume licence key for Windows, only that when you installed it the first time, the key was permanently bound to the motherboard.
Assume that it is a string of lower-case letters (good chance that it has numbers, capital letters, and all sorts of fun stuff). A two-character signature has a space of 26*26, which is already over 625 keys. That number scales hella fast when you add more characters.
Asus will fix your tablet by either replacing your motherboard completely (more likely), or they may have the NVFlash keys for your device by its serial number. However, since your bootloader is unlocked, and they will have your serial number on file as "unlocked", they may just refuse to repair it outright. Surely, they will refuse it for a warranty repair, though I don't know if they will even repair your device for money.
