I have a Nook simple touch with glowlight which I have tried to root with methods from XDA. I did back up an image of the original installed version 1.1.5 and created a "Noogie" SD. Have used it successfully to restore my nook after several failed attempts. However I can't recover from my last attempt which was not a root attempt but an attempt to manually update to version 1.2.1. Used CWM v5.0.2.7 and the update-nc-stock-1.2-keep CWM zip. I can now only reboot to CWM v5.0.2.7 and when sd card is removed Nook hangs up rebooting. How do I get out of this. Will not boot from "Noogie SD"
A properly written Noogie SD card should always get you to "Root Forever".
Are you saying that that doesn't work?
A properly written backup should always be able to restore things exactly as they were.
Is your backup ~1.9 Gigs?
simply .... right ur backup and make sure it's 1.9GB , also boot with noogie Image and give us a print screen of ur internal partitions of ur NSTG ...... and between that make sure ur remove ur sd after u make recovery ...... also i guess ur (UrRamdisk and other file cant remember , did u replace them for get into CWM )
good luck
Problem solved
Amazing what some good input and a night's sleep will do. Renate you are right "A properly written Noogie will always work. Although I had used my Noogie image at least three times previously I decided to format my SD and reflash. Worked first time!! I had an image saved of my original nook so I flashed that and now am good to go with version 1.1.5. Still need to figure out how to upgrade to latest 1.2.1 since B &N instructions and download don't work on either of our two Glowlight Nooks. Spent an hour with support the other day walking me through the upgrade and they couldn't help. Their final answer was "since your Nook is running OK with your older firmware you shouldn't worry about updating. My purpose in updating was to use the latest root method from Gabriel.:

there's easy way ..... u download th package u want upgrade to it ( 1.2.1 in ur case ) and extract and then rezip it and boot up with CWM recovery and go for install package option and install the zipped package ( if u boot up with CWM sd so put the zip file in it)
good luck

I rooted my Nook had super user, market, rom manager etc. I backed my rom (I always do a nandroid back up). I haven't been able to get out of cwm recovery since the nandroid reboot. Can someone give me retard directions on what to flash to get out of recovery, also flashing roms looks very diiferent on the Nook compared to phones. Ion phones you put the zip on the root of your sd and flash.... is that the same here and how do I get the Nook to flash that zip if its not done through recovery via "choose zip from sd card". Sorry for spitting all this dopey **** but Im really frustrated because I know this **** and can't figure it out on my own. Also I really want cm7 on my Nook. I've been in some sticky situations with my evo and ALWAYS got out of it via restore, ruu, etc. Well anyways if anyone takes on this charity case (me) Im in debt to you for ever. I know android language so walking me through this should be farely simple. Everyone at XDA kicks ass! Peace and love.

It's more or less the same on the nook. The one difference is that the nook can boot from the sd card itself, so it's better put cwm on the sd card, not on the device. That way you can avoid problems like...getting stuck in a recovery bootloop ;-)
I'm guessing your bootcount is higher than 8 or something so it's trying to boot into recovery to recover, but your recovery is cwm not b&n recovery so...either that or your regular boot files are hosed and it's falling back to recovery but can't recover because your recovery files have been replaced...or...
To make matters even worse, last I saw making a nandroid doesn't even backup /boot files, so when these things come up, the nandroid is completely worthless, the B&N recovery which would at least get your system back bootable is also gone...
You get the picture.
I'd make a uSD card with cwm on it as detailed here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=987735
Then use that card to get rid of cwm on your nook. Just throw the files on the card and throw it in your nook, just like you would with a phone. More information on the files you need are here or here depending on what you want to do.
Getting the standard b&n boot and recovery files back on should get you out of your boot loop.
Then you can install cm7 or root stock or do whatever in the usual ways, just use the sd card to boot your cwm recovery instead of putting cwm recovery onto the actual device, at least until you are more familiar with mucking around on the nook.

You just made my night. I'm almost 100% that my regular boot files and cwm files are borked. Thanks for taking the time to type that out for me. This is why I love xda.... OK I'm going to try this when I get home in a few minutes.
Nook was running cm7
I went here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=958748 and downloaded recoveryfix.zip and installed it
that was silly
now nook is stuck at book
How can I reflash cwm 3.0.2.8?

Do you remember what version of the stock OS you had before you installed CM7? What happened, was that file that you downloaded is specific to a version of the stock OS.
Make yourself a bootable CWM card by following the directions HERE
Then download the attached file that goes with your stock OS version, and put it into the root of the CWM card.
Boot the device with that card, and flash the file. Remove the SD card when done, and reboot. You should now be back into your CM7. At this point to can flash CWM back onto the NC, or leave it off.

Not really, the version 1.1.0 update came out at the end of January, and the guide that you linked to was made in February, so I would say that there is good chance that you were not on version 1.1.0. I would start with the 1.2.0 package, and work my way down.
No luck
Got meself a monster root pack - http://code.google.com/p/monster-rootpack/downloads/list
1.2.0 and 1.1.0 gave me install failed after rebooting
1.0.1 its still stuck at "Touch the future of reading"
Dont I want to flash a good copy of CWM back so that it can boot cm7?

The NC does NOT need CWM installed on the device to install or run CM7. A lot of people don't install it because of problems like this. I just did a restore of my CM7 image, and took the same steps as you. When it reboots and says install failed, I just shut it down and restarted right back into CM7.
The problem with the package that you had started with was the fact that besides the recovery files it installed a version of u-boot.bin that does not seem to be compatible with your device. The packages that I put up include each version specific u-boot.bin and recovery files.
I would flash the 1.2.0 file again, this time when it restarts and says install failed, just reboot the device, and it should go into CM7. At the very least, at this point you could do a full factory restore.
Update
before seeing your last message I built cwm 3.2.0.1 card using http://www.techerrata.com/dl.php?path=15&file=1gb_clockwork-3.2.0.1-eyeballer.zip
downloaded cm7 latest nightly
flashed it
applied titanium backup
was up in about an hour
BTW I do like CWM recovery, I can take nandroid backups time to time
Thanks for helping
I just bought an NC 1.2.0
no need to bore anyone with details but it is safe to say that it is virtually bricked. i would love a surefire way to get it completely back to the stock to start all over again.
i tried the repartitioning and reformatting technique using cm7 without any luck whatsoever. when i boot the device gets to the big N and "contains Reader mobile technology..." screen and never fully boots.
does anyone have a solution?
Presumably, one of those boring details involved writing an image to an SDcard:

Download 1gb CWM 3.2.0.1 sdcard image from here. MD5 of .zip: 1319739d33642ed860e8044c3d55aa56. (I made this based on work in this thread. credit: to cmstlist and DizzyDen, and kevank for hosting). You really only need the 1gb image ... no matter what the size of your card is. A smaller image will burn faster, and when you're done with the guide you can reformat the card anyway.

There's a decent chance the problem with your install is that you were using an older version of CWM on a newer NC, and it didn't write all the partitions correctly. Regardless, get the current version now.
Grab a B&N 1.2 image:

I modified the official 1.2 update to allow CWM to flash them. You can use these to upgrade to 1.2 or to return to stock.
There are two files. One replaces CWM with the stock recovery (good for going back to stock). The other doesn't replace CWM (but will replace uboot).
Other than that they are identical to the update from B&N.
update-nc-stock-1.2-keepcwm-signed.zip
update-nc-stock-1.2-signed.zip
Please note neither one of these are rooted yet.

and install zip from sdcard > choose zip from sdcard in CWM.
Another option, if will at least start to boot, is to start the boot process and then hold the power button down to shut it off. Repeat this 8 times in a row and the unit will initiate a self restore to the way it was shipped.
One thing to remember is that if you have a blue dot on the box for the nook, it has a different partition size and must be accounted for when installing CM7.

If he has CWM on his internal recovery partition, I don't think 8 failed boots will work.
Also, the latest version of CWM can install CM7 correctly regardless of partitioning, though the old-style partitions are going to be preferable for most people running CM7.

It does if you flash it from ROM Manager, regardless of whether you have ROM Manager running internally or on a CM7 SD install. If he hasn't done that, 8 failed boots should work, but I'm not 100% sure on a repartitioned device.
I would like to remove CWR so that I may sideload the Nook 1.3 software. Right now, CWR is blocking the installation of 1.3 with an error each time I sideload the file and the Nook restarts. I found a CWR Removal zip file but it only works with Nook 1.1 .

I'm pretty sure this has been asked before and the answer is you have to do a complete reinstall of the stock ROM.
Let me guess, you used verygreen's guide to installing CM7 to the card?

That's one of the reason, I never and not suggest others to flash CwM into eMMC.
I guess, you have to completely reformat to remove CwM.
I never install CwM into eMMC so I have no experience how it goes
Managed to do it. It's a tedious process.
1. Make Backup of rooted 1.2 with CWR SD
2. Restore the signed 1.2 ZIP to make it a fresh install and generate a new /boot
3. Backup fresh 1.2 with CWR SD
4. Restore backup of Step 1
5. Do an advanced restore and restore /boot from backup of Step 3
6. Install OC Kernel
7. It will boot up the Rooted 1.2 but without CWR in EMMC
Hope this will help anyone else who might have installed CWR into EMMC

Excellent advice! Thanks for sharing. I am sure others will appreciate it.
It's a good sign for those who intentional or unintentionally flashed CwM into eMMC and want to restore back to stock.
Good work, m8
Glad you guys like it. Quite a few steps but at least it lets us wipe off CWR
Hey guys, I'm new to XDA and I have a few questions needed to be answered if you don't mind .
So an "official" ICS leak came out not too long ago, and tonight I tried installing it on my a500. By "it" I mean the stock leak for unrooted devices. Problem is, it's not working.
Long story short, I Googled like crazy looking for answers to these questions, and I found no specific answers anywhere from Iconia users, only by people with Droid phones.
I need to know the answers for
1) Can I install the stock version ICS from my internal SD card? If so, how?
2) How do I do this without rooting my device?
3) After renaming the download to "update.zip", as some have said, do I first extract the contents then place them in a folder called update.zip, or leave it as is and rename the large file?
In the end, I renamed the file to "Update.zip" without extraction, then reboot my device in recovery mode. The green Droid came on, then a warning sign, and nothing happened. How do I boot the ICS?
Sorry if this seems like a lot, I barely know any of the technical aspects of this stuff!
must be on externel SD with stock recovery.
same thing happend to me. I found out that my pc named the zip update.zip.zip, i used file explore on my 500 and took of the extra .zip and flashed it. And it worked perfectly.
0) You shouldn't have messed with this without first understand exactly what and how you do it. There's a really BIG STOP sign in the thread. Read the thread first to avoid bricking your device. Everything is here, so you don't have to "google like crazy".
To your questions:
1) No. You need an external SD for your stock recovery to flash the update.zip
2) Copy update.zip to the ROOT of your external SD card, power off, then power on, while holding Volume DOWN key
3) You should not extract the archive.
About root - it's a nice thingy - you are able to install a custom recovery in order to BACKUP your current firmware. Then you can flash one of the 4 custom ICS ROMs that will keep your recovery safe and not overwrite it. Actually you can flash very easily any custom a500 ROM with a custom recovery.
Now, try to flash again by using an external SD, if it still doesn't boot, try to hard reset the device (tutorial on how to hard reset - in my signature - in the revert to 3.0.1 thread)
If it still doesn't boot, read this thread on how to recover your tab:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1516012
Good luck.

The above could not have been said any better by anyone. EXACT TRUTH.
i just want to add this is a leak for the a500 . I do not think i would call it official. Also Remember Its yet to be known of the procedure you will have to fallow to accept the RELEASE IF I C S from acer in April (when they say anyway)
Thou from the past i can nearly guarantee you there will be a way. But could require you to downgrade root and flash one of the many ics cwm roms..as in the post above mine signature

Thanks! This all makes sense. However, there remains something unclear to me. If I have to use an external SD to boot a leaked ROM, how/where does the OTA update install from on my internal sd card? Can't I just place this ROM where the OTA usually loads from and run recovery after that? Thanks in advance

The way you can flash it yourself (stock recovery: Vol down + power) requires an external SD. You don't have access to your internal storage by using stock recovery and there's no "key combo" you can use to do that. Once you install custom recovery, you'll be able to flash from Internal memory as well (thor's does, still haven't used RA recovery and don't know about it).
...But in order to install custom recovery, you need root. Custom recovery allows you to make full backups of your currently running FW + app data. If you're still on Honeycomb I recommend you get an external SD and go for the method 2 downgrade procedure and root it or go for timmyDean's procedure that installs rooted stock 3.2.1 ROM on your device (says it does need an external SD so it might be your choice), then install CWM and voila - you're in control and you can wipe your tab and install whatever cusom ROM you like....and you backup first of course
If you don't feel like messing with your tab's system, then wait a little more for ACER to release ICS OTA update.
