Help! - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I'm trying to connect USB cards and a mouse (Like in the Tinkernut video) but I can't.
The app that I'm trying to use is called Nook tweaks.
I'm using the original Nook cable and then connecting it into a USB female to female connector, so it's now like an adapter.
But when I connect the USB or mouse, nothing happens.
Help please!

I've not played around with this myself, but I wouldn't be surprised if the nook can't power a mouse directly. Maybe a powered USB hub would work. However back feeding of power could be an issue. Be careful when messing around with host mode. Check these forums, I'm sure I have seen lengthy threads on the topic a while back.

There is a whole thread on this subject. Look for dalingrin's thread on Nook Tweaks. And the last user was right, you need a powered hub.

Xoom Camera kit not working as OTG cable

No notification pops up, my phone just doesnt seem to recognize the cable. Any reason? I was told the xoom camera kit cable would work for otg usb.
hello? can somebody help?
nobody? okay...coool
You'll need external power to power it

its a pendrive, which should work unplugged. It just doesnt seem to even recognize that its there. Do you think the cable is defective?
In the usb otg tutorial video in the accessories section it shows that plugging in the cable without anything attached to it should trigger a notification. If it doesn't, it's probably the cable

okay, I guess the motorola xoom cable does not work for some stupid reason. Or its defective...well ****.
I guess, it's missing a resistor to trigger OTG mode.

in this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1092493&highlight=usb+otg+resistor) you'll find detailed instructions on what makes one cable work and another one fail. apparently, you'd have to open the micro usb plug and connect pin 4 and 5. the connection between pin 4 and 5 determine, what kind of connection it is: charging, sync, usb otg, mhl, trigger download mode... and indeed, that is done by putting in different resistor strengths.
I got one of these, only £2.50 shipped and works perfectly, its great fun plugging in a mouse!

USB compatability thread?

Hi all,
I'm deciding to buy this or the Transformer. They way I see it, the major selling point of the Iconia is the on-board USB. But how well does it work?
I could not find a simple USB compatibility thread here for the Iconia. If someone could forward it to me, please let me know. If there is no such thread, can anyone answer....In general, are these compatible with Iconia:
USB Hub, unpowered, with keyboard and mouse
USB Hub, powered, with keyboard, mouse, and Hard Drive
Generic USB storage dongles
GSM modem dongles
Card readers.
I can say that the following works just fine on my acer:
- unpowered usb hub with keyboard and mouse
- any brand usb thumb drive or usb hard drive (it can only read fat32 formatted though, unless you root it)
Don't have any experience with card readers or gsm dongles.
I can say for certain that a powered 7 port hub and 7 USB flash drives attached all at once works. The hub was a belkin and the drives were all PNY 4GB. It also "sees" a USB DVD+RW drive, but I didn't have filesystem modules for UDF/ISO so I couldn't mount it.
edit - oh yea, a wireless mouse(Rocketfish) and Razer wired keyboard.
I've tried using a microsoft wireless keyboard 800 through by plugging the dongle into the usb port, unfortunately i cant get it to work. Any advice on this? I'm using it on the a501 with honeycomb 3.0 btw (stock unrooted)

I fiddled around with the keys...it seems the tablet is detecting the physical keyboard because the touchscreen keyboard doesnt automatically launch in documents or other places when required. Unfortunately, the only buttons which seem to be working from my external keyboard are the volume button controls. HELP!!!

USB speakers?
Entirely USB, or just using USB for power and plugging into the audio jack?
I got a set of speakers at work that are entirely USB, and I have to try em with my A500 now!
I've always liked USB. Fiddling with what hardware works or not is part of the fun, for me at least.

[Q] Is is possible to use a mouse with CM7.2?

Exactly what the title says. I was wanting to connect a mouse to my Nook to make using Mini vMac MUCH easier to use.
Yep!
Yeah, absolutely. Download Nook Tweaks from the market, enable usb host from there, plug in a micro-usb to usb-female connector and you're good to go. I run a small usb branch with keyboard and mouse from in using this setup.
As to Bluetooth, I think there are some compatible mice, check this thread;

Thanks! Now I just need to get a cable. Do I need to get one of the OTG cables, or will just any cable work?

I think any cable will work, I just used an adapter and ordinary cable. But you may need to use a hub. I had to to make my flash drive work.

I'm pretty sure a Bluetooth mouse will also work (within the Nooks short range)

Yeah BT mouse/kb work, no need with the hassle of hub and what not.
Does someone feel like testing Mini vMac with a mouse for me before I go out and buy a bluetooth mouse or find a cable?

[Q] usb otg gamepad question

I have an otg cable, yet none of my accessories work with it and my RAZR MAXX. My question is whether or not I need a powered hub when using the OTG cable. I have seen set ups of other android models using a SIXAXIS controller and otg cable, yet no hub. In this case, it the powered hub not needed since the controller itself is supplying its own power?
Thanks,
Neverused

Download USB Device Info:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=aws.apps.usbDeviceEnumerator
When you open the app you should see 0 devices under Android and Linux tabs. Now connect just your OTG cable nothing plugged into it and hit refresh, something should show up, usually under the Linux tab that identifies the USB host. Even if the USB host doesn't supply power this will still work as I have tested it on my Touchpad which has no OTG power.
If you saw something appear when you connected the OTG cable, than OTG is in the Razr M. Now try connecting your gamepad and refresh the device list. If its not showing up then there is either something wrong with OTG or you need external power. This program will ID any USB device connected, even those which Android doesn't support since its just matching the device against a list it has. Try getting a USB keyboard/mouse working ad those are universally supported on Android and would confirm if USB host works.
Questions go in the question forum too...
Here's a dumb question. I just ordered a female USB to male micro USB. I wanted to be able to yank pics off my camera and drop them on my phone. Would I need an OTG adapter or does that plane adapter work?

An OTG cable has a extra pin in it that is tied to ground in a OTG cable which tells the hardware to switch to OTG mode. A regular USB cable will leave this pin open.
If I'm able to peel open this adapter that I got, and jump pin 4 to 5 should it work as an OTG cable?

Its possible, as shown here:
http://tech2.in.com/how-to/accessor...sb-otg-cable-for-an-android-smartphone/319982
For me I'd rather just buy an OTG cable, but if you have regular microUSB cables laying around, go for it.
Bought an OTG cable
Bought a simple OTG adapter from newegg. So far....plugged in a mouse and my camera. Both work flawlessly, my camera gives me the choice of either either MTP (?) that goes straight to gallery and image import, or Storage which prompts to a new usb mount. Have not tried a gamepad yet, I have 2 floating around somewhere but not sure what game to try.

[Q] things to buy

I have my NP coming next week! Now I need to know what I should order to go with it. Should I get a USB hub for it? Can I use the Logitech k400 if I wanted? Can I plug a 1TB HDD in somehow to play my movies? My computer recently died so my plex server is down :/
I'd like to change ROMs on the device too.. So please advise. Thank you!

Get an adapter cable from micro USB to USB female. Then get a powered USB hub - the passive ones probably won't be able to drive your HDD.
With Kodi, you won't need the PC-based server!
Lots of choices for a Bluetooth keyboard/mouse. I use my Logitech diNovo Mini.
I would recommend the Inateck HB4003 Gigabit Ethernet & 3 Port USB 3.0 Hub. It has the micro usb adapter built into it as well as an ethernet port & a hub. If you want to use your TV remote instead of the nexus player, I would recommend getting a FLIRC usb adapter as well.
Thanks for the ideas! I'm really pumped lol.. Kodi sounds like a perfect fit for me. Are there any restrictions on hard drive size that can be connected?

One thing I noticed with the HB4003 it looks like a regular USB end not a micro and the cable doesn't detach. Where you saying get that and the micro USB to USB female adapter? Thanks!

My mistake, you are right. Its has been so long ago since I put together my setup. I forgot that I also have a HooToo (HT-CT01) Micro USB OTG + 4 port charging hub as part of my setup (used to charge my cell phone, tablet, & game controllers). You will need a micro usb OTG cable if you go with the HB4003.
Regardless of which OTG cable you go with, make sure that it is a straight cable for OTG. If the otg device is a right/left angle cable or a short adapter, it won't work because of how scrunched the cables are.

I've been thinking about this, and in this case it's better to get a powered usb hub, and plug a usb-ethernet adapter into that hub.

For me, it hasn't been an issue that the HB4003 is not powered. Then again, all I have connected is a FLIRC adapter, mini usb receiver for my Lenovo N9502 keyboard/mouse, & a thumb drive.

I chose the adapter to reduce clutter & reduce my millions of wire behind my TV. The way I see it, having one less USB connected device is one less thing to diagnose (I am always flashing roms & plugging & unplugging devices to the USB hub.
Hmm is this a viable option?

Yeah, but now having a ssd to increase userdata space is a valid method, it changes a limitation of the NP. For me personally I'll just hide away the clutter.

This is what I have. Click here for my review on XDA. However, there is only 1 USB port that is connected to the OTG. The remaining 4 ports are for charging purposes only. If you need more than 1 USB port fort OTG purposes & possibly an ethernet port, I would get the HooToo and the Inateck.
The way mine is wired is:
Nexus player ---> Micro USB Cable (provided) ---> USB extension cable (OTG cable is short and wanted to hide the hub) ---> HooToo Hub (back HooToo USB OTG port) ---> Inateck Hub (Front of HooToo Hub)

If anything, removing the HooToo hub is reducing clutter, unless you need more than the OTG ports on the Inateck hub.
So micro to USB female > inateck hub with Ethernet is probably the best choice then.. I just wish I know it'd push a 1TB HDD and a Logitech K400.. Thats all I'd hook up to it.

Most probably not as the 1TB hdd will require a powered usb hub.
Unless it's one of those that has it's own power source.

There is a method to my madness! It makes more sense when you see my setup.
My setup:
1x Harmony Smart Hub (USB Powered)
1x Winegard LNA-200 Boost XT Digital HDTV Preamplifier (USB Powered)
2x Micro USB Cables (Charging Tablet & Phone)
The Hootoo hub allows me to charge/power all 4 devices using 1 power brick instead of 4 individual power bricks. Having a functioning OTG was icing on the cake.

Yes, that sounds right (make sure it says OTG). Is your 1TB HDD self-powered or is it powered through the USB port? If it is self-powered, it should work. I just plugged up my spare 1TB Fantom Self-Powered (power brick) HDD to see if it works and it seems to be okay. If it is not self-powered, it may be ymmv.
I have two HDDs actually. Both 1TB but one was in my desktop and I'd just order a powered enclosure for and the other is a western digital mobile drive without power.
So I'm pretty sure I'll go micro otg > inateck> powered HDD and Logitech K400.. That's really all I can see I'd use really. My TV is on the other side of the room. So not like I'll be walking over there much.
I'm stoked!

Why not plug the hdd into your router? It'll be accessible everywhere, easier to add/delete files on it.
My router is an older N 300 Cisco.. Sadly I've got no USB support for something like that atm. I'm looking into a router upgrade though. But the one I have has worked well for about 2 years now.

Certainly something to consider.
But seriously, if all you're going to put on that hdd is media, plugging it into your PC and sharing it works the same as plugging it into a router (only bad point is that your PC needs to be switched on for the hdd to be accessible). If you're going to be plugging/unplugging your hdd from your Nexus Player just to add files, it gets old pretty fast.
