Here is my idea:
I wanted to order a pair of Raspberry Pis to offload some work from my main laptop, like downloading torrents, streaming music and more.
My HD2 became useless after I got Nexus 4, so all the time it was resting on the shelf. I thought - damn, it would be nice to make a use of it without actually using it.
So I am going to install debian lenny on HD2. (tonight)
It will be visible to the network over wifi (preferably usbnet), and with a hard drive attached over the network.
It will run transmission, nginx with php, teamspeak and airtime server.
I think this is brilliant and f'ing genious
Had anyone done this before?
P.S. There will be no luck with teamspeak and airtime - they ain't compiled for arm... sad.

Can I sync the music and videos of my iphone with my tab....or perhaps I could read and play its(iphone's contents on my tab) contents??
Is this possible...?
Sent from my XT720 using XDA App
pretty sure NO
can you access your iphone by wifi ? or bluetooth ?
anyway I am pretty sure that iP.. not allow that kind of things > or you need to buy the ultimate dongle made in apple store to allow the connection at the price of $99.99 (sarcasm?)
Why to buy a dongle when I can connect it using normal usb port....if android devices can sync thru itunes....then why not...oor is there any app available on apple to let me share via usb??
Sent from my XT720 using XDA App
hummm did you read the word sarcasm ?
- I am quite sure if you use an iphone stock you will "not be able" to sync or else... because so far I remember iphone require itune... but anyway.
also... if your music are bought from itune... they got a DRM so then you cannot copy them on another device especially with iTunes...
but I maybe wrong, I am not so far an iFan or iUser.
I try to link my Camera Photo, to the Acer, nothing, because it's not read that kind of device
but... 3.1 I think will allow USB HOST so
and concerning application from apple, ask to apple forum...
Howdy,
So alas I have moved past my good ole flashin' days of the G1 and got the new blackberry 9900 about 2 months ago (loooove it).
But I found my awesome G1 in my closet and have a mission in mind. To transform it into a rockin GPS Navigator. Alas Blackberry (nor iPhone for that matter) do not have an amazing GPS Navigator like google's navigator (they pale in comparison). So I am thinking itd be swell to use my g1 solely for that purpose.
I am going to worry about the specifics of tethering it later, or possibly just load up the maps via wifi before I leave my home..
I am also going to buy a dashboard holder thing (any suggestions) and a car charger. However right now I am focused on getting the actual software on the beast.
I flashed it to SuperD (a 1.6 rom) which is super stable and fast and not flashy. Which is exactly what I need.
Basically I am asking for suggestions or any hints you androiders can think of to help me in my quest to made the g1 into a solid GPS. I will keep this updated on it, hopefully with photos down the road in case any one else would like to follow suit. Do you have any tips for using the navigation app, or ideas for the best settings or rom/which version of android to use?
Thanks!
And stay strong G1-ers
Let me know how it turns out.
I might I do the same.
Thanks in advance.

Ha sorry to leave you in supense.. I didnt go forward with the quest. It ended in miserable failure as I ran out of time and ideas.. And then I got found out I can save tons of money on a monthly plan by getting a HTC G2 and tmobiles prepaid plan for $30/month..
Sorry! I just use my g2 now as a sat nav
I did make my G1 into a media player and mp3 player. Then the both I had broke.

Can anyone think of any serious uses for our G1s? On the net there are tons of pages with funny stuff like using old phone as a doorstop (the G1 would be too fat ), but who would use a G1 as a media player? We have new phones or dedicated mp3 players, and it's not good enough to use as a retro emulating games device. Any ideas?
I replaced my G1 with my LG G2X.
My G1 would not even play angry birds, It would show the loading screen and never load or goto a black screen, Crash and end the APP.
You can get a cheap prepaid ANDROID phone for under $50 on sale that will walk all over the G1. Also check Craigslist for some good deals.
I have a CRICKET ZTE 500 SCORE.
It has a lot of uses and including a media player. VOIP and GPS.
I use it with a Bluetooth speaker to play MP3'S at work.

My thorough search for a compatible wifi booster has left me empty handed, and with a headache.
I am a paramedic, and am usually never sitting still, but when I do I would rather not have to park my rig on the router to get a signal.
Everybody knows the wifi signal is weak on our A500, is there a compatible antenna or booster that would allow me to get a decent wifi signal? Little side note, it would need to be portable, and slightly compact.
Thanks in advance

This is as good an option as you have. Sorry wish there was more....
No usb type antennas ? I do not have any knowledge on soldering nor do I want to mess up my tablet trying to figure it out.

In a word, nope.
Of course I don't know everything and am quite unqualified at a lot of this kind of stuff. So your solution may still be out there.
That said. If you find a better solution. I am certain that there are many of us that look forward to hearing about it. So don't forget to share.
Working solution..
Here at our home we have over 1acre lot.. its very deep and not so wide . but we have a Gazebo type structure about 400 feet past our back deck. our router is in the basement its a a average price netgear.. I bought a netgear router . that can be set in repeater mode.. this router we have will find all wifi signals and boost them.. I have used it on Construction sites as well. in a similar fashion from my work van to boost the 3g from our work computers in there...
So get a cheap router i think they are like 40.00 for the netgear one. make sure it says on the box with Repeater mode. i think is how its worded.. it will pick up open networks with a bit of setup.. you can find all of that on there website..
back when i was in the pc repair business NETWORKING WAS My big thing..
Good Luck..
Thanks er, but I'm looking for a portable solution, like maybe a plug n play antenna or something, I'm rarely at home, mostly mobile.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using xda premium
my router i use for a repeater.. is pluged in the garage.. .. The one in my work van plugs into a invert-er.. its very small.. i think 1x4x6 to 8 inches.. they draw very little voltage..
But yes i do understand what your looking for.. I have looked for something similar for gps.. as you with wifi no real solution..
Good Luck...
This is a shot in the dark, but, .....
I see you are on T-Mobile? Happen to have an WP7 or rooted android phone?
Go the tether route, it really is your best and only solution.
Many, many options at that point, from paying for a tether plan to *ahem* 'circumventing payment'....
- for instance -
I have an HD7, the last update HTC gave out included 'internet sharing' - basicly a mobile hotspot when turned on - and I have not paid for, nor have been charged for a tether plan *seems I got lucky*
As far as android is concerned, there are some apps that will do tethering for you, and sets the data through a proxy, as to lessen alerting the phone co. as to whats *really* going on.
Good luck to you!
I do have a rooted android, the ability to tether and as well as a wireless hotspot. I use that when I can, other areas where tmo service isn't that great is what I find wifi for, and when I get capped lol.
Just trying to find an alternative to siting store front or on their router. An antenna is all I need lol.

Hello. Just wondering if anyone is using Teamviewer on the Nexus 7 to remotely connect to a computer? I have been using the app on my rooted AOKP Nexus 7 to connect to my work iMac for about a day or so. It seems to be work pretty well and from I read on the internet it "seems" safe. I am the only one who has the lD and password. That being said a couple questions:
-Can someone hack into my mac or nex7 using a backdoor exploit to bypass my password? How about the developer of the app? Do they record my password and username for any reason? Does teamviewer key-log?
-If I have the teamviewer app or program turned off on my mac or nex7, does that mean that even people with the password cannot remotely access my devices unless the app is turned on?
-On a side note, anyone use chrome remote desktop from a computer? I shouldn't have to worry about keylogging on that when the program isn't running right?
Not trying to be paranoid. Just have a lot of project files at work I need to keep safe. Thanks.

Team viewer is a well respected and widely used application. I would expect that if there were any security risks, we'd hear about it. Whilst the product is free for private use, the licence terms are such that you have to pay for commercial use, and the company relies on their reputation to make money.
The only way we'd know if TV was vulnerable would be if someone actually hacked it, and it became public.
Only the developer could tell you if they had a back door. If it turned out they did. it would hit their reputation so hard I wouldn't imagine it was worth the risk, even if they thought of it.
The same applies to others of your questions.
If TV is not running as a server, then it can't be logged on to from a client machine.
Personally, I'm quite happy to trust the programme. and use sensible password practices.
Nick

Thank you. Everything I have read about them on the web has been good so far. The app works great compared to what I was using before which was Splashtop HD. Didn't know much about TV until I came across them earlier today.
Teamviewer is an excellent program I have been using it for years with no problems. You should be just fine.

I'm afraid I'm also not using mine for anything, sitting a draw, but like you I'm definitely gonna keep onto it.
Alarm clock? You could get a 1.0 ROM or something and delete almost everything but the clock (and probably need a launcher for it).
Doorstop? It's pretty tough and chunky, and the chin might help.
A remote/Bluetooth keyboard for some other device, e.g. tablet. Idk how this would work, I've looked into it before but can't find answers.
Def sounds like a good idea for a remote. Maybe for you tube app on my TV or something other. Maybe give it to my daughter and tell her to have a ball.
Funny, I just found one of these phones at a garage sale today..... Perhaps some resource-unintensive Linux distro could be ported to it and it could be used as a small Linux box.
Still using mine as a WiFi hotspot. Since I have a free data only SIM with a volume monthly quota of 30GB
I'm using mine as a sacrificial phone when I'm kayaking. It's perfectly capable of calls, SMS, and MP3s still. The touchscreen works through a transparent drybag. I can be confident that if I should wind up in the water and the drybag should fail, it's no great loss.
Mine is with my 2 year old daughter. She play games on it ,really there is no other use.

I want to use my G1 as a screen keyboard and mouse for my raspberry pi. It would be great if I could make it usb plug and play so I could just plug it into any pi and be off.
I'm using my old mytouch 4g as an IP camera. The g1's camera isn't as good but that's another idea.

Mine is sitting in a backpack full of electronics. The camera is broken, though. It doesn't matter; It's running a ICS ROM which doesn't have camera working, anyways.
I lend it to my friend, he still uses it as a primary device !!! he was never interested in smartphones, so he is very satisfied with that phone
I Love G1
Mine, I'm still using it as my primary phone, I really love it.
I just picked up a package deal consisting of an HTC Radar 4G, a MyTouch 3G and this G1.
I have unlocked all of them (using a Lycamobile Sim). Unless I really fall for the Radar, I will probably sell it (worth more than what I paid for all 3) and keep the Dream alive :good:.
But first, need to get it up to Froyo. It will do what I need. It's the model T of Androids.
The MyTouch had a bad sim card holder, so I needed to do some solder work and hack the holder so that the card just falls in from the outside rather than slides in. The back holds it fine, but it probably not very salable (though the outside is in perfect shape)
Update-
Got the G1 rooted and running on Cyanogenmod 6. It was a struggle to find coherent , relevant, current (not really current, but currently working) info on how to work this ancient piece. It has given me a taste for it , anyway and I hope to try another ROM.
Frankly, I am just rambling to get my post count to 10 so I can ask a question in the modding forum....
It was sitting in a laundry hamper that I was using to store a bunch of old CDs and other stuff I don't use on a daily basis. It so happens that the hamper fell from the top of my bedroom closet and now I'm thinking of ways to use this thing, but the first thing that came to mind was to use it as a distraction for the kids. Now that I think about it, it could be used as a remote with keyboard and all. It's running CM6, but I'd like to know if there is a ROM that is very minimal. My phone has no ability to make calls anyway, but everything else works. Any ideas?
