Acer Aspire One (D257) can upgrade to Win8 Pro or not? - Windows 8 General

I have an Acer Aspire One D257 netbook with system:
32 bit system
CPU: Intel Atom N570 (Doul Core 1.66 GHz, 1M L2 Catch)
RAM: 2 GB
Screen Resolution: 1024 x 600 (MAX)
I want to know, can I upgrade to Windows 8 Pro with this screen resolution? What are the common issues that I will face after upgraded?

Windows 8 32bit is fine.

I worry about the screen resolution, especially the metro app of win 8...

The OS will run fine. However, you will not be able to use "Metro" apps at that resolution. You'll basically be limited to the Desktop. You'll get the advantages of the faster boot times, lower RAM usage, greater security, and the refresh/reset features of Win8, but otherwise it will be pretty much the same as Win7 it terms of what you can do with it. Your CPU won't support Client Hyper-V, your display won't support Metro apps, you don't have a touchscreen to take advantage of, you (probably) don't have cellular data to take advantage of the Win8 features there, I'd guess you aren't using multiple displays with it very often so the improvements in WIn8 with multimonitor won't be relevant...
Also, WTF? That's a lower resolution than many current phones have! Sounds highly unpleasant to attempt to use; are you sure it wouldn't be better to just get a device with decent specs?

So do you recommend to upgrade this mini Acer laptop to Windows 8 Pro? (It is now using Windows 7 Ultimate) :silly:
1024 x 600 is the common resolution of most Acer netbook series...

I guess it depends how much you feel the extra RAM is worth it. Running Win8 instead of Win7 will give you back probably at least a few hundred megs of RAM do the de-duplication process, which on a 2GB system may be a pretty big deal. On the other hand, at that resolution, you probably aren't multitasking much anyhow... so maybe you don't care.
The security improvements are mostly only relevant on 64-bit; a 32-bit system will derive much less benefit over Win7 in this area.
It's theoretically possible that there will be Win8-only non-Metro apps that you want to run, but it seems unlikely. If Win7 is working out for you, I'd suggest you stick with that. Your hardware just isn't going to let you take advantage of most of the Win8 features. In the meantime, you'd have to deal with the Win8 mis-features, like the fact that Start search now requires extra clicks to access things listed under Settings or Files, and you'd lose the built-in games since the Win8 ones are Metro.

Hack to get Metro working

Metro apps will not run in less than 1024×768 which the Acer can’t do but there is a hack.
The hack involves setting display scaling so you can set the display to be a non native resolution. To go this you need to load up REGEDIT which you can do by clicking on Start, then start typing REGEDIT, this will bring up the search screen and then click on the app.
Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Video
Then find you display devices , I had four listed and it was the 2nd key. Click on the display (it will be something like {CA7B02A8-373B-4A4D-8E4E-4196CF23A532}
Then select 000
A whole list of keys will be displayed, find “Display1_DownScalingSupported” and set the value to 1 and then quit Regedit and reboot.
After a reboot you can then go in to display settings and change the resolution to 1024×768, its not a native resolution so it doesn’t look as smooth as the native setting but you will find that Metro apps will now load.
I hope this helps. always set a restore point before making any changes to your system.

I have tried this hack on my sons Acer One. However whenever he starts a metro app, the computer hangs so it wasn't much of an improvement.

Are Wizards Slow

I'm considering making the move from the Blue Angel to the Wizard. The only thing is that I keep hearing that the device is slow so I wanted second opinions. It definitely didn't help that the device took so long to switch teh screen to horizontal mode in the cnet review video:
http://reviews.cnet.com/T_Mobile_MDA/4505-6452_7-31678156.html
The Wizard isn't all that slow, to me, its almost feels the same as using the apache. even though it runs at 200mhz, it is a dual core processor. overclocking it 240mhz also makes it faster. tweaks and hacks can speed up overall peformance and decrease the time to switch to horizontal mode when pulling out the keyboard.
I went from a BA to the wizard. and in day to day use i see no major speed diference. even my gps navigation software runs at about the same speed. go for it i dont regret my move to the wizard for a second
i find the wizard generally slow but i can understand why its done. I have 3 day battery life and great features and this is at a trade off of being slightly slower.
I run an xda 1 and 2i and find it slower running some apps than both devices
tomtom is a good example, runs faster epecially starting up faster, on the xda 1 and 2i but by choice i always carry and use the wiz for everything. The others are back up devices for me

it's slow but can process everything.
In the past month and a half, I've gone through the Blue Angle, Exec (not sure what that's called), and now finally the Wizard.
So far, the wizard has been the absolute fastest of all. MUCH faster than the Exec!
b
The was slow for me at first but then I upgraded to the "unofficial 2.24" version and it's much faster for me now.
I also have a program called x-cpu which can modify the device to have a 100mhz processor up to a 500mhz processor however it will disrupt services such as bluetooth...not sure about the phone though but the dang thing was lightning fast when that program was running.

Depends on how you intend using it. I have used almost all the Models of HTC and believe it or not WIZARD is one of the best when it comes to the battery backup. See the POST ON THE TOP BY maltloaf Maybe we can relate this to a slower(though slower is no the appropriate word) rather controlled speed.
But mind it please, if you have an address book of more than 4000 contacts with 5- 6 entries in every Contact Including E mail id and web address, u might find it hanging while using SPB diary for example.
Keep a watch on this thread and read others experiences.
This FORUM Is excellent and enriching !!
I was disappointed at first because it was to me it seems like running xp on a 386. I figured what the heck I don't like it now so I'll update the roms and get rid of all the misc junk Tmobile put on and overclock the thing. Wow, what a difference, it's a heck of alot faster, runs everything and is generally a pleasure to use. I've clocked it up to 240mhz but found beyond that it will drop a phone call now & then. It's a great little machine.
... runs smooth to me, coming from a SK2. Overclocking helps, but at 180 on the 2.24 rom I have no complaints!
Sometimes I wish it could be quicker, but the most lovely thing is to work with different programs opened simultaniously without any problems, like: SKYPE (high cpu), pRSSreader, IE, Word, TRE register-editor and WMP all together without any lapses in the music-sound.
The only problem is the battery-life while continiously surfing the web: it lasts only 1½ hr.

Imagio Overclock? HTC Performance

hey everyone!
I have been loving my imagio with the Orange Slim Rom on it, but there is always room for improvement... i have been reading about the HTC Performance overclock for the older qualcomm processors msm7x00, and was wondering if anyone had tried it on our Qualcomm 7600..
Anyone Care to be the first to try it? Im kinda scared since i dont have insurance on my phone.
Hey, I'm giving it a go now. As they say, you only live once, right? Or twice (insurance helps with that ). By the way, the cab you have didn't have the shortcuts to make the actual changes. I found one labeled "__with_shortcut_" floating around the internet somewhere that actually let me use the thing. It's about the same file size.
I haven't noticed anything too dramatic, but here's some of the things I think got better:
- Lists like the contacts or All Applications seem to come up faster.
- Populates the complete lists of songs on the touch flo music library much faster and maintains them better, especially after a reboot when everything's fresh.
- Speeds through the phone's setting menus now, where it used to slow down in a lot of places.
- Google Maps approximates my location the moment it starts now, whereas it used to take a couple seconds after coming up (I don't know why that is since it finds you first by using cell towers, but it's just better at it.) It also loads the maps faster when moving around.
- Weather animations appear smoother.
That's about it. No other applications load or work any faster for me, and animations are just as smooth as they've always been. I've enabled landscape support for just about everything on the phone, and nothing rotates faster either. That said, I'm running the Imagio's stock rom with nothing more than the SSK TP2 Dynamic Resource Proxy and Manila NoPushInternet to keep the memory usage down, so I don't really know how what it'll do for a custom rom. I'm really considering removing it though, since the gains I've seen are too small to run the risk of bricking my phone or draining the battery faster, which I feel like it's doing. It is very stable though, so I see no problem in giving it a try. It never locked up and nothing crashed. Hope your experience fares better.
Thanks for the Review of this app. I think more people (including myself) will feel a little bit more confident in using this app, knowing that we havent had any brick problems... Everyone that has downloaded this app please leave your view on if this app really works or not.
SPB Benchmark is very long in the tooth, but using mainly the gfx & cpu tests on
a fresh install of nrgy may 16th:

using nuedynamic clock to underclock the phone 384mhz VS 122mhz Note the voltage was set to 0 (least):
FWIW i also tried the near defunct nueoverclocktest cab to go from 524mhz to 768mhz. i hard locked ASA i switched it to 768mhz on both AC power and 100% batt power.
http://www.nuerom.com/BlogEngine/post/2009/09/07/nueOverClockTest.aspx
so in conclusion, i highly doubt HTC Performance does anything AFA changing clocks & we apparently can't overclock.

[Q] Run Modern/Metro UI apps on the desktop?

Hello fellow Windows 8 users!
Not sure if this should be in development, but i was wondering if it was possible to run the Metro/ Modern UI apps on the dektop screen in a window? It seems the new office does this and I really liked it. I find it extremely annoying using a fullscreen app on a 24" screen on my desktop PC.
The new Windows literally kills windows. I don't get why they would do this to desktop users.
Office 2013 is desktop apps, not modern apps.
I understand that, I'm just using it as a reference for what I'm looking for. Its a desktop app but its in the style of a metro app that runs in a window and I want to know if there's a way to run real metro apps in a window.
I'm with you on this one. It would be nice especially with a dual-monitor setup. Anyone know if this is possible?

It would require hacking up a large portion of the OS. I don't think it will ever happen, if only because the metro apps can almost all be downloaded as regular desktop apps/browser windows. Netflix, Skype, etc...why go to all the trouble porting them when they already exist independent of the new UI.
This doesn't exactly answer your question, but have you played with Snap mode?
You are limited to a narrow, 400px width snap area (left or right side of the screen) and can only have one app/application running in the Snap area, but it is the only out-of-the-box way I'm aware of that can (somewhat) do what you're looking to achieve.
Just seen this app on Neowin. http://www.neowin.net/news/windows-8-based-retroui-gets-update-to-retroui-pro
I has a feature that puts a metro app in a window. it's working but it's still really unpolished.
Here is a pic of me playing wordament on the desktop. The app has some rough edges, hopefully it can be improved. The main problems are that it makes Windows really sluggish, and it's really unstable. It doesn't give taskbar items for the metro app and the second the metro app losses focus the window disappears.

Great find!!!!!!!!!! will go back to windows 8 now....first 2 trials lasted 2 hours only, couldn't get over the fact that all those metro apps run full screen, as multitasking was down to 0
Thank you
You also don't have to use Metro at all... the only things I use it for are Mail (crappy, but it works most of the time) and Skype (which is actually fantastic when snapped to one side of the desktop)

Windows 10

Untill we get a new subforum for it, i suggest we use this thread to talk Windows 10.
Personally, i wanted to discuss the 4 things mentioned below, but don't at all hesitate to give your own comments/pros/cons, this should really be considered general Windows 10 chatter, if you have some question google cant answer yet, this would be a great place to ask, if you want to share your experiences with the upgrade process, this is the place, etc.
Tablet mode
First off, tablet mode, i have to say i'm quite shocked by this, while i do actually appreciate that Microsoft made a much clearer split between touch and 'desktop' input, that touch interface is just ridiculous, im running W10 on a so-called Convertible (a cheap Chinese one, a Pipo W3) and i've already disabled tablet mode as a whole a mere 30 minutes after finishing up the W10 installation.
To name some of the weird quirks it has, for example, you can open the start menu (or metro overlay? whatever its called) by clicking the windows button/key, but then you cannot close it with the same button/key..?! Or the fact that you cant right click the desktop. Or what about when you start putting (program-) windows side by side, and then you cant properly change those windows anymore without closing the side-by-side view..
Whats also quite the bummer, for the people that do wanna use it, you cant seem to set it up in such a way that if something happens (say, the keyboard gets detached or the device rotated to a certain angle) it will switch to tablet mode, you just get a little toggle button in the notifications area that you press to toggle between tablet and desktop mode, kind of a missed opportunity. (it does have a "when this device automatically switches tablet mode on or off" setting, but yea, the actual automatic switching is nowhere to be configured)
Having said that, im fairly sure tablet mode does have its good sides too, one thing i did like is that you can actually set up your task-bar to show different things based on if your in tablet mode or not, which is a nice little feature, but besides that i simply haven't used it long enough to see more of its good sides.
If you dislike tablet mode like me, then you can go here to 'disable' it:
Start -> Settings -> System -> Tablet mode
Just set it to go to desktop when you sign in, and to always ask before automatically switching, and your good to go.
Windows update doing "half assed torrents"
This is something that i didn't really notice yet, until i saw an article about it on some dutch news site, it turns out, theres some sort of update sharing going on in Win10, if i download and install update, and a guy near me then goes to download it, he may actually get the update from me rather then from Microsoft, in effect, eating my bandwidth. While i totally understand why Microsoft did it (lowering the load on their servers) im not all that happy with Win10 just whoring my connection, it might be another story when its done in a local network (which is actually an option) but using this feature online, no thanks.
So, if you wanna mess with that setting, go here:
Start -> Settings -> Update & Security -> Windows Update -> Advanced options -> Choose how updates are delivered
I suggest switching it to only do it for your local network, or just turn it off completely.
(i should note that its doing this over p2p connections, although apparently you can have multiple connections, which is why im calling it "half assed torrents")
Scaling
This is something i guess i cant really blame Microsoft for, its just what the world has come too (thanks too bs 'retina' marketing mind you)
When you've just installed Win10, it will have way to large UI elements, most likely because a lot of small devices these days get high resolutions.
Microsoft prolly figured that everybody's gonna install it on a 10 inch 2560x1600 screen, so on default, the UI scaling is set to a whopping 200% which is way to big for my taste, if you agree, heres where to change it:
Start -> Settings -> System -> Display -> 'Change size of text, apps, and other items'
Personally i set mine too 150% though ideally i would like to set it to something like 135%, 125% is a little to small, 150% still a little to big, but i cant choose it with that much detail, the options are limited too these four: 100% / 125% / 150% / 200%
UI Consistency
Last but not least, this just has to be mentioned, im a bit disappointed by the fact that Win10 still has a random mix of "old interfaces" (windows 7 and before) and new interfaces (windows 8 and after) wich makes the whole of it look a bit messy and unfinished here and there. One of the best ways to underline this is to just link too this guy's tweet, couldn't have said it better myself:
Pick a menu, ANY MENU... AND STICK WITH IT PLEASE.

And the rightclick menu's are just one of the things, theres more flaky UI all over the place.
So far with my comments on Win10, they're mostly 'things that could be better', but theres plenty i do like as-is in Win10 aswell, allthough nothing really pops out, obliviously the return of the start menu is great, the fact that you can have multiple desktops is cool, Cortana isnt half bad, and some other things, but in general, i was mostly just looking for "a proper windows experience", which Win10 does deliver, once you find your way around.
Now how about all of you? what do you like/dislike? what are you running Win10 on? got any tips (perhaps similar to the ones above) on getting a better experience out of it? Discuss!
Edit: Ok, guess i misjudged interest to chat about Win10, sorry
No comments is sad in deed
Personally haven't installed W10 yet. To much cloudy business going on.
Though I wanted to try in on a 8.1 tablet, and guess what. It doesn't upgrade... nice going MS. ?
It is a smart move from MS to attract mainstream folk to conduct this launch hype and lure
People to share there information in the background etc..
I have been using Windows since 1.0. But I have to say I'm a bit disappointed the tablet
didn't upgrade. It's standard for tablets to use wim set up, yet they(MS) seem unable or unwilling to add a decent upgrade mechanism even after al this Windows 10 poeha.
Yes, I could install it in a more technical tinker manner. But I'm not that motivated to waste my time on this.
Btw, the added tweet is funny
i love windows 10 on my tablet. massive massive improvement for tablets/touchscreen.
as for tablet mode, just click the notification symbol, then tablet mode on/off (bit quicker than above posters method)
i still prefer windows 7 for my normal desktop,

WIN 10 new 20H2 fall update

Hello to all...
As Windows user and tester I will explain some major things happening in new win October update aka 20H2.
First of all...
ANNOYING CORTANA rises from dead...
As soon update is configured and Windows boots up, take Cortana offline, it is just like virus, it must know everything you are doing and gets me very annoyed just from opening interface on startup. Is this some Microsoft new development of UI to take over your machine ? Who would know. Looks like Cortana is just like COVID 19 , Microsoft spread this globally and then let's you to know that the cure will be developed in near future (win updates again). In simple way to wxplain ... Microsoft once again push Cortana and hopes that people will embrace it and start using it, while not knowing that just like Google history search, it saves any history of using computer and sends it to Microdoft for processing (providing your computer data - all).
Second thing is...
UPDATE RESTORED FIRST DEFAULT SETTINGS after update.
I don't know if you guys are expiriencing this, but why everytime major update kicks in and restores default settings, changing colorson screen, lock screens settings , etc.
I noticed that update removed color from my START MENU (my accent color) and got default grey , now it looks so monochromatic. That's a major update to fix some stuff in Windows
In adition you can't go to the old control panel / system icon anymore. Now it takes you too settings in tab ABOUT.

- that looks like About your phone in phone settings (first clues Microsoft is converting Windows slowly in Android base style OS).
Third...
Microsoft is pushing newly (but old) EDGE browser while integrating it slowly in shell like Google Chrome does, and possibly not giving the user right to erase browser in any way (this is not tested yet, but will test EDGE properties, use and removal of it).
Fourth and last...
Launching your SAMSUNG phones apps in Win desktop.
Why only SAMSUNG phones??
Other models and brands does not exist ???
Microsoft is expanding the “Your Phone” app with more features designed for “select Samsung devices.” They said.
If you have one of these phones, you can now access your phone’s Android apps directly on your Windows 10 PC. They’ll be running on your phone but you can launch, see, and interact with them on your Windows 10 desktop. They said.
Running apps of Android in Windows 10 is a good idea but I mean it is most likely be better for all android based phones to have this support. Which turns me back to JAVA. After all this years JAVA and FLASH (which support ends in about a month) were taken seriously by Microsoft and they developed a interface NOW in 2020 to get apps working in WIn 10 enviroment. Clearly , let's face it, Microsoft is losing the battle with apps and their Microsoft store.
I opened this thread for all of us together and to find any abnormalities, good things and mistakes made by Microsoft and their H2 updates. I hope that everyone viewing this will manage to find extra times to discuss future Win 10 updates as they impact on everyday computer use.
Please everyone write some of yours expiriences with new update.
Thanks and Cheers !
Microsoft keeps getting worse and worse... 1709 remains on of the best versions of Windows 10 but unfortunately RTX 3000 series are not supported.
You could join communities interested in Windows debloating and tweaking,I'm part of one but probably I cannot link it here.
2004 was a good update,some increased performance but higher latency.I didn't test 20H2 yet
