Okay. I just had the weirdest experience with rooting my Note 2. I had the Pakistani ROM installed, rooted. Flashed with latest French ROM without unroot and used Exynos Abuse, which said already rooted. Unrooted and rooted again. Used voodoo root keeper. Updated OTA without further reboots. It said modified. Now, my status only shows normal if I'm ROOTED. Plus, Samsung Apps now shows a counter of -1, after saying one update when there were two. Any way around that.

I have just received an OTA update to 2.3.6. I have been connecting my Note to my laptop using Kies for the last few days to see if it was available that way but there was no mention of an update. So I was pleased when I did an update check using Settings on my phone and discovered one was available OTA. It is good getting OTA updates just like on the Nexus One so there is no risk of installing the wrong firmware or making a mistake using Kies.
So what difference does the update make?
received my note yesterday and had OTA 2.3.6 XXKKA also 15 megs size.
also interested to know the differences
i bought from carphonewarehouse and got OTA 2.3.6 this morning too.
ps. its stock phone with no root.
So this removes root and CWM?
Edit: apparently root and apps are not touched on this update according to the other thread about this.
Just downloaded and install failed, it said to try using kies...

Have the same. It failed to update, said to try by kies. I also have rooted stock ROM.
Maybe we should unroot ?

That may be the case, so I'll probably do this later today since it's almost 3am. I don't want to set everything up tonight.
Or we can just wait for a custom ROM that will have the update.
Edit: I don't understand though why people who are rooted in the other thread got it to work.

Thanks for the thread! I've nicely updated my phone
Also got 2.3.6 OTA today. Phone is from the Polish Plus+ telco. Seems much snappier all around. Will be interesting to see if battery life improves too. Also the stylus seems more accurate but it's hard to say...
Bring on ICS!
mine fails the wifi update. tried 3 times. my phone is rooted.
fire up kies and says that kj4 is the latest
perhaps its to do with the method you used for rooting.
iirc, there are a couple of different root methods, some of them seem to affect the tamper counter (cant think of what its really called). maybe the update is only available for those who still have the counter at 0?
dont quote me on this though, im still a nubblet on the tweaking side of android.

It seems rooting has nothing to do with it. I've rooted by the CF-Root method 2.
Maybe any other changes make the problem (theme mods ?)

No I had to revert back to the stock theme since the dialer had problems. Worst case scenerio I may have to wait for a custom ROM, maybe ill try updating through kies later.

I rooted my note with Chainfire's tutorial using the zergrush method and installed the new KKA kernel.
My phone downloaded this new update but failed to flash it on reboot. I think I'll just wait and see if Chainfire releases his own version or there is a rom with it built in.
Alright, to start off, I apologize if there is a thread already on this (I searched but couldn't find anything).
I am a complete noob at rooting and don't know much about it. I plan on rooting my Nexus 7 in order to get Stickmount for additional storage on my device. My worry isn't about that, after I root it, how easy will it be to update it when a update for the Nexus 7 is released? I heard of stuff like flashing a rom with a updated software or flashing a modified firmware. Will tutorials be available for this when the time comes?

After you root, install OTA rootkeeper from the market. I assume it works with the Nexus 7, not sure why it wouldn't, but this keeps your device from losing root after an OTA. You can also install clockworkmod recovery and install any ROM you want which makes more sense considering this is a nexus device after all

i can confirm this works.
i tested out a few different scenarios last night.
booted up device, ran update, unlocked bootloader, put bad boot.img on
restored to factory, rooted, booted, used OTA Keeper, ran update, rebooted and root was gone. ran OTA Keeper to restore and BAM! root was back

I just looked up that app, it seems it's already integrated into SuperSu (that's the one I'm planning on getting). I just want to know if it's easy or not to upgrade the device once it's rooted.
OTA rootkeeper is on super Su ???

"The application doesn't support original Superuser and not SuperSU for a very simple reason. The same feature OTA protection feature is already present in SuperSU."
That's what it said on the app overview section.
SuperSU Premium has it and it worked for me on my T-Mobile G2x when I updated to new OTA. Don't know if free version has it

I'm a noob to this type of stuff so if free SuperSU DOES have the OTA rootkeeper, does that mean I can update my device without any trouble?
If it doesn't, what methods can I take to update it without causing any damage?
Pretty sure its only in the paid version its called survival mode

OP: You should calm down. I mean that in the nicest way possible. This is a Nexus device. You can unlock your device anytime you want. You can simple re-root if you happen to lose root, there well always be a method. If you like to be on stock, you can just flash the updated stock firmware. Chances are someone will pack a nice stock rooted firmware within a couple hours of it being released, possibly before you even get a notification that there is a new update.
Sorry if I came out as panicky, it's just that I never did this before so I don't know what's right from wrong. Well I'm sure I'll get used to it eventually, thanks for the help.
Hello,
Being new to the Nexus series I am curious to know how things work with OTA. I never got those one that SGSII. So I've looked through a few threads and I do not see a clear answer to the question of "do you lose root after OTA update? Assuming your stock rooted nothing else changed. No custom recovery. If you do lose root. How do you get it back? Can you just use one of the toolkits to fix it? Do you have to wait until the devs figure out HOW to root this particular version again? Again someone without a custom recovery just a stock rooted phone. Thanks for your help. I'm just debating in staying stock without a recovery. I tried several roms and now I'm back to stock and I kinda like it....

If you have stock and a custom recovery then your custom recovery might be able to keep root for you. Alternatively you could try OTA rootkeeper but that is not guaranteed to work. I was rooted stock with a custom recovery when I received the 4.2.2 update and it installed fine through my recovery but after that I lost root and my custom recovery.
You can use voodo root keeper from play store, it saves root and can be restored after update. It has worked every time I have used it

It has worked on my nexus7 from version 4.1 to 4.2.2 and on my n4 I've used it for 4.2, 4.2.1 and 4.2.2. Just remember to save root/ unroot before update and restore after you receive ota. Hopefully it will work for keylime but only time will tell.

Well I am on the horrible MF3 that requires the safestrap recovery to flash any compatible file. So I am not on a custom ROM I am only rooted.
I recently saw the notification that the new 4.3 update is ready to download .
My question is if I update will it still update and just take the root away? Or will I have to unroot and then upgrade?

I am still waiting on an answer for this also. I do know that it has been confirmed working to retain root when upgrading to 4.3 using "survival mode" in SuperSU. I purchased SuperSU Pro and enabled "survival mode". Then I defrosted the AT&T software updater (had it frozen previously to avoid the update) and Let the update to 4.3 download. I tried this twice and both times the 4.3 update failed to install at 25%. Maybe because I had previously uninstalled some of the AT&T BS apps. So I think I wasted $2.50 for SuperSU Pro. I have searched the forum and there are many people talking about having upgraded and retained root via this method, but nobody seems to want to clarify the steps of the process.
Some I am guessing maybe if you haven't removed any of the bloatware from your phone, you can use survival mode in SuperSU to retain root and take the 4.3 OTA update as normal. If you try it, let me know your mileage.
If I had any idea about MF3 and the locked bootloader I never would have gotten this phone. I hated iOS 7 and decided to come over to Android thinking modification would be much easier on the platform. With carriers locking bootloaders now, it's actually WORSE than having to wait for a jailbreak for an iOS version.
I accidently ota to mk2 from mf3 and re rooted with the mj6 method on att s4

Take a chill pill bro. This phone is still better than an iPhone. There is a safe root method now so no need to use survival mode just have to find a way to get to 4.3 which is all over the discussion boards.

so im completely lost. after flashing a new rom yesterday, custumizing i have seem to have "lost root". superuser was working fine and i was doing things that require root. today it just stops working and i cant get root access on anything. i installed a root checker and it says i dont have root. what gives? so i was rooted yesterday and today im magically not rooted? should i just start all over and root my phone again using de la vegas tool? any suggestions to what the problem and solution will be greatly appreciated
by the way this has happened to me on quite number of roms but not to this extent where i literally have no root acess. on the other roms superuser just decided it didnt want to work anymore and i was able to fix it by unistalling it and installing a different superuser. but know i can even uninstall this one since it built into the system and you need root to unistall/delete the apk

Friend of mine just lost root on his Note 3 too. I wanted to show him some program requiring root and he was surprised he had no root anymore. Could be some Samsung silent update?
After you flash you lose root. That's how it is. Unless you use custom ROM that it's rooted by default. If you flashed Stock Rom, just go ahead and root it again.
