Should I disable or enable FSYNC? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know this is a noob question but please enlighten me. Because I'm so confused on how to perfectly run jays buttery goodness. I'm using SmoothRom 4.2.1 and M-Kernel @1.4ghz on a performance governor. Thanks! Any recommendation is totally appreciated.

It really matters on which you want more... performance at the expense of possible data corruption, or data integrity at the expense of some performance.

If you get a database corruption, what is the likelihood that you can recover from that if you have a nandroid or adb image?
Also, what if you do that apps2sd mod, do you still need to disable fsync?

Does encrypting your GT P7100 affect performance

Was wondering whether anyone knows if the use of the encryption function on the P7100 will result in any noticeable loss of performance on the device...Does the encryption of the file system result in a greater use of processing power...?
Thank you..

What is a safe level to over clock?

Hi all,
I am using a rooted n7.
I have over clocked my galaxy s2 to 1.5ghz before, but I am not sure what is a safe level to over clock the n7 to.
What is a is is for battery life and performance?
And which kernel do u guys recommend
?
Thanks in advance
Cheers

I run trinity kernel on my Gnex and N7 and on my N7 I keep it stock speeds because I've seen no reason to realistically OC it. Most of the improvements I see are from the kernel software changes over stock. You can OC to 1.6 safely but I'm not sure of the power usage difference but I'm pretty sure the loss in power isn't worth the gain from OCing.

I have mine at 1.6 just for the hell of it, I get a good 4 or 5 hours of continuous usage out of it.

For the benefit of the community, can you tell us any major changes at 1.6 GHz?
Is there anything noticeably faster?
Hi, I have a related question but can't post since I'm new.
Using the glazed rom which i like but it apparently has gpu overclock. I would like to know how to adjust that back to stock setting or at least see what it currently is. I found the CPU section but there is no gpu I can see.
Is there a tool I can use?
Sorry for the hijack...at least its sort of on topic
IMO over clocking is a gimmick, its the kernel build

My thoughts exactly. I play some light games and web browse on my Nexus 7.
For those purposes, my Nexus 7 is already extremely fast, so I don't think I would be able to notice if it was over clocked.
But I guess it depends, maybe there's a big difference when running GPU heavy games.
I have OC mine upto 1640 MHz for bench marking alone for half and hour or probably more and it went fine although the tablet was getting warmer more than usual.

Hi,
I decided to flash trinity kernel.
I am currently OC to 1.5yghz, is that a safe level to keep it at full time? Or can that burn the cpu out?
Thanks again
Cheers
Corey
Edit,
I over clocked my galaxy s2 ages ago, and I noticed a huge difference in performance.
So that is why I want to over clock my n7 too lol

there is no such thing as a safe overclock. overclocking, by nature, carries some risk. that said, i havent seen anyone brick their device from overclocking.

Just wondering
Why do you feel the need to OC?
I go to 1.6 but use the Trinity App to go back to stock when OC not needed
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
I have not over clocked the Nexus 7 yet but one way to test your devices max is to use setcpu. Make sure you do not have "set on boot" option selected. Then step up your cpu. If your cpu can not handle the over clock it will force restart. If you do not have the set at boot selected it will revert back to the last good state on restart.
Each device is different on what it can handle for over clock.

To be honest I doubt you'll notice much increase from oc the CPU since the CPU already is so powerful nothing pushes it to max really.
Only thing worth overclocking is GPU really. And at that, your not going to notice a difference unless your playing some intense games.

Why does this thing lock up all the time?

This device is blazing fast most of the time, but it will inexplicably lock up, completely, for a few minutes at a time for seemingly no reason. Right now it's frozen on a youtube video and I can't turn it off or use the screen. The device is also unusable really when installing apps, and will lag heavily in Google Now sometimes.
Is this just me? Or 4.2.1?
Just you. My N7 is still operating at warp speed and doesn't lock up..

Are you stock? If so I heard people saying turning off the sync for currents will help, for Google now lag I feel its performs better if you turn off the hot word in setting. But with that you can't say Google and start voice search

I'm stock 4.2.1 and don't have those issues. I do have currents (and various other apps) disabled, so like previous response said try that. Otherwise maybe go with a factory reset.
When my gnex updated to 4.2 it's performance suffered until I factory reset, now it's been much better.

My best guess would be you have installed an app that is not compatible with 4.2.
How about posting a list of what you have installed, if you use multi-user, and if you are stock (not rooted), and we can give comments.
I agree. I'm running PA and rock solid. I was also rock solid on stock.
I've never had it lock up. I flashed a Trinity kernel once that caused sleep of death... but it was a known issue.

I have a pretty decent amount of apps installed. I'll post them in a minute, but no, I'm not multi-user, and I'm stock. I'll root and put a new rom on this thing if it's worth it, I figured it'd be fine the way it came.
btw, here are my androbench results. Are these slow?

thanks, I'll try disabling those.
Over 100 apps in total, my andronbench write speed is clearly an error so just compare read and app open macros.
My apps open much faster than yours, which I'd put down to PA ROM and kernel. Maybe your write speed is a bit slow?
Can you download "forever gone" from market and try a full fill and delete? Apparently helps reset the memory controller to improve performance.

I did forever gone earlier today.

I just want to know if I should restore, root and flash a new rom on this thing. Can someone check out my androbench scores and tell me if they're normal?

Under clocking on stock ROM?

I've noticed that the default clock speed for the Nexus 4 CPU is 1GHz - 1.2 GHz (for my phone, anyway), but any attempts to underclock either of these values with many of the available CPU control apps have been useless, for after about a minute of usage, the clock speeds return to default, despite the CPU governor remaining as my choice.
I'm wondering if it's actually possible to effectively underclock/overclock on a stock ROM. If not, are there any battery-life optimized roms/kernels out there?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Are you rooted? If you are, I don't think you should have trouble underclocking on stock. What app are you using to change your CPU frequencies? Try using a different one.
Trinity Four kernel has given me the best battery life so far.

You need to be rooted, use setCPU (app) or flash a custom rom

Fsync - on or off?

Does turning off fsync make a noticeable real-world performance difference? I know it brings faster app installs and such, but does it also make a difference in everyday usage?

Kind of risky... checkout this thread...

Rgrds,
Ged.
I am aware of the risk, thanks. So I am wondering if the risk is worth the potential benefit.

After flashing I always Fsync off (understanding the risk).
I don't do this for a higher Quad score but to have somewhat faster web loading.
(just my 10 Yens worth - ymmv)

Well... I've just tested... disabled Fsync using TricksterMod... and 'Set On Boot'.
Upon reboot, I noticed a very marginal speed benefit... but not enough in my opinion to justify the risk.
----
There are no objective answers here... you'll have to try it for yourself, I'm afraid.
Good luck.
Rgrds,
Ged.
Well, I have tested of course too, but not sure if the speed gains I have observed are real or placebo. Does anybody know if disabling sync requires reboot?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Do not need to reboot. Just try it, for me it made the horrible io lag the nexus 7 has less noticeable when doing heavy io like downloading apps or flipboard, things like that.
I went from stock kernel to Franco and didn't see a huge improvement until I disabled fsync. Now my experience is much nicer. Faster wake from sleep, less io lag, overall less lag.

Give it a try and find out. (If you are one of those folks that OC's and isn't concerned about kernel crashes, make a backup before you begin)
The writes have to happen eventually. (Hopefully before a kernel crash or freeze!)
The point is that it's not something that gives you something for free - it merely moves sluggishness from one point in time to another. I suppose it also means that it (transiently) uses more RAM for caching of dirty pages that have pending writes.
good luck
