Hi,
since at this point it is unknown whatever updated 10.1 will still run on Tegra 2 or something else (Exynos 4201) I would appreciate your opinion on this matter.
What do you think will be inside?
If two versions will be available which one will you buy?
Of you hear any thing new in this subject - please post here.
Since Tegra 2 has some limitations (video playback) I personally hope it will run on Samsung's own SoC, will play all video formats and divix/xivid with DLNA and playback from SD will work beautifully.
I have an issue with Sammy using their own chip for one reason. When every other phone was running a Qualcomm chip and the Galaxy phones were using Hummingbird chips, there was some optimization in the android code that was not included for Samsung chips.
Since Honeycomb has been built around the Tegra 2 chip, I fear the same thing will happen.
Don't believe HC was built around Tegra2...hence the reason for no Dual-Core spec requirement. Hell, it's up and running on devices of all sorts as we speak.
I want Tegra games more than support for h.264 high profile video playback.
So, I want Tegra

If you want games you should wait for a SONY tablet ;-)
Why do you assume that it will have a worse performance in games than Tegra 2?
I think that it will be better than T2 in both cases.
BTW: thera are gossips of new Moto tablet coming out around fall with T3 (QUad core Tegra) inside...

Assuming he's talking about the PS3 and TegraZone games that require a Tegra chip. Other chips could probably play them, but think Nvidia has it so they look specifically for the Tegra chip.
Not that gaming is my main priority, but I saw all those "Tegra optimized" games on the Tegra Zone.
They are all nice games
It will be sucks if they don't perform as expected on non-Tegra tablet.
Because as I said, I could care less with that H.264 high profile. I can still "convert" them or stream (via future app ala AirPlay on iOS).

by this summer, tegra2 will be one and half years old since announced, and tegra3 will be only half year away

More than likely, Samsungs SoC will be nearly identical to the Ipad 2's A5 SoC, which has already shown to be several times faster in the gfx department vs a Tegra 2.
Also, the Tegra 2 is missing the NEON optimizations in most other A9 SoC's.
So I put my vote toward Samsung's SoC.

But like all great hardware, it's only as good as the software it runs. I'd rather have the Tegra if it has exclusive content or specialized support from Google.

There were news reports that Google was going to make Tegra 2 the reference platform for Honeycomb but that never happened. Now it looks like Google is working with LG to come out with a Nexus tablet this summer so it'll be interesting to see what they are putting in that.
Personally I hope Samsung steers clear of Tegra 2 and goes with their own SoC.
Isn't LG already releasing the G-Slate? Are they gonna release another one in the summer? Thats just not a great strategy me thinks.
In sweden there is now a IT fair called Dustin Expo, and one off or bigger computer sites reported that Samsung not going to use Tegra2 like the other manufacturers.
They will use there own dual-core ( probably Exynos ) and Adeno 220.

Looking forward to hear from Samsung whats up, and what spec the 8.9" will have and some reviews on how good there skinn on HC is.
The hardware that Samsung is about to release i really like, but they sucks on software updates and improve the products thay have released. So should i get the big and heavy xoom whit updates or the light and sleek Samsung without support
There is also Asus Transformer to choose from.

Besides Touchwiz, I say it depends on how you're going to use it. If I decide to get a tablet, it'll most likely be the new Galaxy Tab because (I'm going to assume here) that it'll most likely play any video and audio format I throw at it. I think that's the big difference (codecs) between the two as of now besides Touchwiz.

If true that would be the best news of the current tablet season as Tegra 2 sucks BIG TIME!
I would also want to know.... how close in design is Apple A5 (the one in iPad 2) by Samsung to Exynos by Samsung
I wouldn't mind if it had their proprietary SoC as what really matters in these tablets is the GPU. It seems the T2 chipset is getting a bit long-in-the-tooth despite not being heavily utilized yet. If Samsung is pairing with the Adreno 220 then that's better than the Tegra 2.

Why would they add an adreno 220, when a Mali-400 would be a lot better? Seems like an odd choice to me. Also that prototype is running Tegra 2(assuming it's the same device that's been shown off at other venues).
Maybe we'll see the Adreno 220s on the SGSII as well?
Wasn't the prototype just a 10.1v?
@Toss3
Presumably, the SGS2 will be equipped the dual-core Exynos clocked at 1.2GHz. I say "presumably" because, just like now, Samsung hasn't revealed the true name of the processor, only the clock speed.
Oddly enough, there will also be a Tegra 2 version of the SGS2.

Hey Guys,
I'm thinking about picking up a Kindle Fire mainly for couch-gaming. I love the whole rooting/hacking scene and there seems to be a lot of dev support which is essential for any android device to suceed imo, but I digress.
How does the GPU handle the newest, current 3D games? If im looking for a tablet that will hold up to newer games, would this be a good or bad choice?
For example, I'm looking to start playing Order and Chaos again. I got it working pretty flawlessly on my HTC Flyer that I used to have. Does anyone run this on their fire?
Thanks for the info
The OMAP TI 4430 and the PowerVR GX540 do really a great combo. The KF handles new games without any issue .
However, keep in mind it only supports up to two touch points at the same time.
Do you want an E reader that can play games or a full fledged tablet for entertainment? Because the KF is not a full blown tablet by any means.
Kindle Fire handles hard core 3D gaming very well. Games like Shadowgun run like silk

All good and well what the Fire can handle but for $50 more, $250 list, you can get a full blown Android tablet in the Galaxy Tab 2 from Samsung. That 50 bucks gets you: Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, GPS, a micro SDHC slot so you can add 32GB more storage, camera (admittedly not so great of one), compass and other sundry sensors. Uses the Ti OMAP dual core processor which does rather decent graphics.
Edit: I knew I forgot something as I was writing this and just remembered. A full Android device will also have Bluetooth so you can use wireless gaming controllers.
Just something to consider.

The issue is that most people don't pay 199 for their Kindle Fire's if they are on XDA. You can get a refurb device straight from Amazon for 139 and probably cheaper if you look on Craigslist, etc (around 100).
Kind of makes that "50 dollars more" argument turn into 120+.
Mind you, I'm not arguing the fact that for 250 you do get a full fledged tablet device in the 7" form factor. The GTab 2 is a fine device.

Hello guys!
Do you know if there have been some testing on Windows 8 Tablets with gaming (yes its not out yet, but many tec sites tested it)?
Or did you tried comparable hardware on now available devices with games? I mean like crysis or medal of honour warfare 3 with minimum details / or maybe higher?
Which announced tablets would you recommend for such decent gaming?
Thanks for you infos.
Cheers and best wishes
If by "decent" you mean games that require discrete gfx, then forget it. All Win8 tabs announced thus far use either Clover Trail (Atom Z2760) w/ PowerVR, or Core CPUs w/ integrated HD4000. If you want to know how well those work for games, just look up gaming benchmarks for those respective GPU cores. Suggest perusing Anandtech, TomsHardware, or similar sites.
Games will need to be redone for tablets, even x86 games, not only to optimize for the lower GPU capability, but to also incorporate touch. "Decent games" as a definition will change over the course of next year. For current games, the answer is: none.
Hello!
Let me begin by saying sorry for the monstrously long post - I honestly wanted to make it shorter but it got out of hand pretty quickly.
If you're like me, then the minute you've got your hands on the S III Mini you went to the Play Store to test some games, right?
If yes, then you may have noticed that some of them state that they aren't compatible with our devices... and, if you're like me, then you may have tried some "unofficial" sources for, oh let's say Gameloft goodies.
After installing, they either crash at startup, crash during or after the loading screen or, more interestingly, display white boxes instead of the actual textures (this was my experience with Nova 1, Hawx and a couple of others). In this thread I'll try to explain why. My sources are some wonderful threads here at XDA, but if I'm wrong in my assumptions then please correct me so that in the end, we can paint a more correct picture. Of course, some crashes and incompatibilities will be related to completely different things, but here's my take on it!
First of all, the chipset used in the Samsung I8190 is the NovaThor U8420 (a custom 8500 actually), which includes two Cortex-A9 CPU cores clocked at 1 GHz and a single-core GPU, the Mali 400MP. The Mali-400MP is a pretty old GPU (first launched in 2008), but a decent one nonetheless - it's actually on par with the Adreno 200 and 205 in some tests, but that's irrelevant.
Well, that's our culprit - because of the Mali GPU, a part of the games on the Play Store won't be available to us. That's because it's an older model, which only supports ETC compression for 3D textures and games usually rely on all manner of other formats nowadays. So, we go and torch ARM for their GPU, Ericsson for their chipset and Samsung for including it, right? Actually, no.
Here's where it gets interesting - ETC (Ericsson Texture Compression) is a free algorithm, a rather good one at that, but it doesn't support transparency in textures. Developers need to create a kind of "gradient mask" for transparencies (I believe it's similar to Photoshop), so instead of a one-step procedure, this needs two steps to perform. The other algorithms support compression of textures with transparency, so that's why we see white boxes in our games instead of actual textures - the Mali can't display them, so they all get changed to white "placeholders".
The thing is, the ETC format is the only standard accepted officially by OpenGL, so in the end, all the other formats are basically "wrong"! So, it's actually not Mali's fault, nor Ericsson's or Samsung's - it's the developer's fault that they use proprietary formats! Some users (that seemed to know what they were talking about) stated that the change to ETC format isn't that hard to perform and should take only a couple of hours to a resourceful dev.
Why aren't they doing this? Why isn't everyone using the accepted standard from the get-go? Because Nvidia, Imagination Technologies, Qualcomm and all the other GPU manufacturers want their products showcased and displayed in the spotlight. Tegra, PowerVR and Adreno each have to look like the best way to do 3D graphics, so the giant corporations behind them provide incentives, support and so on for their products, each trying to outdo the other's efforts. Thus, devs create a product (a game in this case) that is customized to run "best" on Tegra, or on Adreno or whatever - if it's an exclusive deal ("Tegra™-optimized", anyone?), even better!
This, in my opinion, is completely idiotic! Remember when in the '90 we had all those graphics card manufacturers? Remember how games ran only on Voodoo? Fortunately, the PC industry stabilized and we now have only the big two (Nvidia and Ati), but the idea resurged in the past couple of years on the mobile platform. It's also quite ridiculous, since we can't actually check and see if Game X performs better on Tegra or on Adreno, since it only works on one... so, how can we perform tests?
This is Android fragmentation at its ugliest! Take any modern PC game - no matter if it's "meant to be played on Nvidia" or whatever - you can still run and enjoy it on any graphics card, no matter the manufacturer. That's because of standardization! On the mobile platform, standardization of this sort isn't yet enforced, so in the end, we the customers have to suffer! So, if the game you bought isn't yet compatible with your device, go and yell at the devs - no, really! There's no excuse for using proprietary formats on a platform that boasts of its openness and customizability; there's no reason why we can't all benefit from GameX and there's no logic in denying paying customers of these experiences, all because of one more step in the compression procedure or some marketing hype! iPhone users can benefit from all games in the App Store because all of their devices use the same set of instructions and I'm pretty sure that we Android fans could as well!
So, in the end, Samsung and Mali actually did the right thing... It may not be regarded as such by us, who suffer in the end, but in the long run, enforcing the standard, officially recognized and supported method of compression is the right way to go. Seeing how Samsung sells millions of devices, I just hope that updates will start rolling for each app that presents me with a yellow bar under the Install button.
'Till then, we can only count on some brilliant guys here at XDA that can and do work hard on fixing things that should work correctly in the first place. Remember that I asked how we can perform tests if Game X doesn't run on both GPU Y and GPU Z? Well, one of the above guys is Chainfire of Windows Mobile 5, 6 and Android fame... with his 3D app installed, users reported that previously incompatible games were running perfectly on their devices, no matter if Tegra, Adreno or Mali was powering them. So, it doesn't matter which GPU is used, only the willingness to actually do it right that counts.
Here's to a more fun and usable Android!:highfive:
Note: I actually don't have any experience with developing games and the like, and all the info above is collected from threads here on XDA (especially those for Samsung Galaxy II) and googling everything I come across. I'm sure that the other methods of compression have their benefits and that at least some info above isn't 100% correct, but I still stand by my point. If you know more or want me to correct something then please leave your reply below and I'll see to it ASAP.

Hello,
I am going to buy a tablet PC soon. I have decided to go for a Windows 8.1 tablet, which are available for about the same price as HDX
My options are:
Dell Venue 8 Pro
Acer Iconia W4
Lenovo Miix 2 8
Is the Intel Atom Z3740D processor in Venue 8 Pro better than the Intel Atom Z3740 in the other two?
The benchmark scores available on different review sites are conflicting. While the Iconia W4 is ahead with HDMI output, the Lenovo Miix 2 8 is officially supported by the upcoming ConsoleOS, which would allow dual booting Windows and Android, getting the best of both worlds.
Do you have any experience with any of these tablets? Suggestions Awaited.
Thanks

The difference between the Z3740 and Z3740D is miniscule, considering the benchmark data I've seen.
From your list I'd consider the Dell as the best choice - that is: if they finally managed to get the digitizer to work properly and last more than a week or two
Personally, I've got an Asus Vivotab Note 8. It's in the same category as the tablets you've listed. It comes with a Wacom Digitizer (same technology as in the Samsung Note phablets) which I consider to be an essential tool for the tablet.
The screen is just too small hit checkboxes etc with your finger
And about ConsoleOS: I'd be careful. If it's actually being released: great. But I wouldn't hold my breath. Have a look at this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2782798

Thank you for the input. The digitizer is of little use to me because my purpose is gaming. I know that these are entry level tablets, but they still can run some recent games at playable FPS. There are some videos on youtube where these tablets are shown running relatively newer games like Skyrim (2011) and Tomb Raider (2013). There is even a video where the VivoTab Note 8 is running GTA IV! Besides, you could run loads of older games and even PS2 games.
As for ConsoleOS, the one thing that makes it look real is that the company behind it, MMV, has in the past created an android based console. This console was reviewed by enGadget at MMV's office.

better do some research.....they never delivered on their iconsole.tv and iconsole.tv apps store that
they were going to deliver in Nov./Dec. 2013.........and simply jumped to consoleOS in what June 2014......
said they had been working "in stealth" mode for 18 months yet cannot produce any code / downloadable code for test builds / etc.
their going to produce a special Apps Store with consoleos also...yet they failed to deliver on the iconsole.tv one...!!!
everything is a lot of talk.....NOTHING verifiable by anyone...the press only puts out what their given...as they dump massive amounts of
press releases....oh and their videos and appearances at different Intel developer forums......yet no one in the press has shown a download,
or a test build that they have used to verify any of the claims....the press is only interested in page clicks to generate revenue...no time to verify anything with the tough questions that really matter....all they have shown is the same things that others Asus,Dell, etc. had already shown, before Microsoft and Google shut down dual-booting of Windows with Android......
most likely a scam...
