[Q] Entire line of red pixels - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I bought my N10 through the Play store on launch day and received my unit in what seemed like perfect condition. Sometime last week, I came home and booted the device and noticed an entire row of red pixels appear on the left side of the screen. I'm torn between sending in my unit to Samsung for repair and getting into the whole RMA roulette hoping I'll get a good unit. Has this happened to anyone else?

I would rma it.

Dead Pixels?

Anybody else having issues with dead pixels on their xoom?
I got mine from Motorola.com over a week ago and did not notice any problems until I found a pixel in the middle of the screen that was constantly red/black. I don't know if it was there from the beginning but I kind of doubt it because I had been using the xoom constantly from day 1.
I called support and after a few issues, they mailed me a new xoom which I received today. I set this xoom up and noticed 2 pixels this time that were exhibiting the same behavior right out of the box. More to the edges so not as noticeable but they still were not operating correctly.
I called support again. They had me do a factory reset which did not solve the problem. Instead of sending me another one out, he said I would have to mail my second xoom in for repair.
I searched and found at least one other member with a pixel issue which he returned to the store. Any other people had similar issues?
BTW, I love the xoom and only disappointed that i will be without my xoom for a week.
I had a stuck red pixel on mine as well but did not notice it until I switched out the default wallpaper for the one with the line of androids on the white background.
Took it back to Costco and checked the new one completely before leaving. The new one is perfect.

[Q] Kindle Fire just arrived, yellow upper right corner.

I didnt notice it until I fired up an episode of Lost, but one of the corners is yellow. It's a gift for my dad who will mostly be using it for night time reading and it's gonna be glaringly noticeable there. Anyone else got this? Wondering if I should wait before hitting up customer support or do it now.
Ive seen this before on a few other devices when they are brand new. Its something to do with the adhesive not being completly set and it should go away.

leave the screen on for awhile then?
Not sure if that helps. For me it just went away after a few days.
If you dont hear of anyone else having this issue i would return it. Ill check mine when I get it tomorrow.

Mine literally was just delivered to my office not 10 minutes ago and I have it charging away. I don't see anything like this that your describing on mine right now but I have also not done anything with mine other than plug it in.
Mine looks fine. I would wait a week and see if it goes away.

One for my wife showed up and I played with it for an hour or so while she was out setting it up and checking it out. I thought it was decent for what it is.
No issues with the screen. For what she is looking for... it is great so far.
Contact Amazon 8663218851 for a replacement.
yeah they're sending me a new one. It's for a christmas present for my dad so I'm not worried.
If anyone was wondering you can totally sideload ADW and have it work.
Mine's fine. no tint issues.

Couldnt find a GS3 without stuck pixels

Hey guys, about 3 weeks ago I bought a Galaxy S3 (after waiting for MONTHS to get one, by the way) at first I was delighted with the performance and looks, but after 3 days I noticed I had a stuck pixel (it was black, on a blue screen) using the *#0*# test
Okay, I got a bit sad and went to the store to get it replaced, and so I did, second one......noticed the same problem some time later
Tried AGAIN, went to the store, this time they let me open as many units as I wanted to , to find a perfect one, I went through SEVEN , ALL OF THEM with stuck pixels in some color (green, red, blue) after more than an hour looking I TOUGHT I found a flawless one.....went home with it to apply a screen protector, while I was doing that I found another stuck pixel, couldnt believe what I was seeing
Went to the store ONE MORE TIME to get ANOTHER replacement, the LAST one.....took it out of the box, and there it was, a black pixel on the green screen, just gave up and got my money back
What the hell is going on with samsung? I just wanted a flawless screen, afte all, its a state of the art device, should be flawless!!!
By the way Im from Brazil and the phones were all unbranded
Might be the imported batch .
Mine is flawless .
jje
Must be the batch, mine is flawless on the LCD test.
No stuck pixels here.
Perfect here too haha. Wait two weeks then go back and try again.

Tested a few and no stuck pixels on any colour background. Bad batch for sure.

Perfect screen here too. Honestly, I have yet to buy a device with dead pixels or similiar flaws, lol. Guess I'm lucky.
Mine is flawless as well - no dead pixels at all. So you waited months? It was released at 29th of May, so in the worst case you waited about 1,5 months.
To be perfectly honest, I don't believe your story...
When I said "waited for months" I meant: I was going to buy the S2, after finding out the S3 was gonna come out I decided to wait, and in my country it was only released at the day I bought it (about 3 weeks ago) so yes, I waited for about 6 months just dreaming about it
If you dont believe me I have one good solution for you:
The big X on the upper right of your screen, click it and witness the magic
For everyone else I hope it was just a bad batch really, for christ sake I loved the device but I cant stand anything but perfection on a US$1000 handheld (its how much it costs here on Brazil)

He probably waited since it's announcement and possibly even before. But that's pointless to calculate, since one might say I've waited for years to get it... Which btw is true since I knew that more or less the 3.generation would be around roughly at the time my S1's 2year contract was over.
but after 3 days I noticed I had a stuck pixel

I'm very sure you've not found a single Samsung Galaxy i9X00 phone with a stuck pixel and you probably never will. AMOLED screens have no moving parts so the pixels cannot get stuck as with LCD but either die (dead pixel) or react too slow (lazy pixel). Factory-defects such as pixels lighting at the wrong time or shorting with others are of course also possible.
I went through SEVEN , ALL OF THEM with stuck pixels in some color

Have you actually tried apps designed for stuck pixel / dead pixel repair? Often enough the pixel can be revived regardless of whether it's an (O)LED or LCD screen.
My dear friend im sorry for using the wrong expression.....im used to LCD screens and I would call it a stuck pixel because it cant reproduce one especific color (for example the pixel which presents itself black on a blue screen)
Yes, I tried the "unstucking" apps, left them running for hours and hours, like 12 hours at least, it didnt make any difference
Guess I'll just have to wait 2 months and try again, lets hope Im luckier this time, since its not looking to be a general problem...
That was (very faint) humor, so don't take it too personal :silly:
I think everyone understood what you meant, you just used the wrong term for the technology in question
Hmm, that definitively sounds like a bad batch. However I'm surprised, since Samsung's quality control might let one or 2 units slip but ALL of them having defects? I dunno, but that kinda sounds strange...
Maybe your seller got duped into buying units which Samsung's quality control filtered out. Only a hypothesis but well...
On an interested side note: How hard or easy are the dead pixels to spot? Maybe some of us got them but are unable to notice.
The brain is very good at interpolating missing parts of an image or color. Also how bright was it in the room?
I've recently seen a darker splotch on the screen on the red color but can't find it anymore. (Maybe it was just dirt after all...)
Probably a bad batch, I also bought in Brazil and it is perfect.

i had to take my gs3 back to the shop because of a fault with the phone but that was my own fault. but ye the man behind the counter said the gs3 has never had a problem no one has brought one back apart from me to the store so the phones that you went throught must have been fake or something because these are the beat phones out and you dont get any problems with them.

Lets just get one thing straight, a black pixel is considered as a dead pixel, other colours are considered as stuck or bright pixels, it's also normal for a screen to have upto 3-5 pixels problem according to the international standard, so you are luck the shop will allow you get a refund after all the unboxed you did, not that anyone will blame you if you get a dead or stuck pixels in the middle of the screen is quite annoying.
anyway here is my story with problems
1 st unit was a in store inspection, out of the box the power button was stuck.
2nd unit, instore inspection the phone had a few specks of dust in screen.
3rd unit seems fine, and thats the unit I took home until I made and received call, although calls made instore were fine, 99.8% of them, the calls will just cut off between 3 minutes and 7 minutes.
Next day
4th unit had more dust in the screen.
5th unit had a black dead pixel in blue screen.
6th unit with instore inspection seem ok, took this home and then I noticed there was a problem with the wifi.
Phone detects wifi but won't connect, just saves into the memory and sometimes it will connect.
Also my router has 3 ssid set, guest, 5ghz and 2.4ghz, most of the time it will just detect one of the 3 ssid while the other 2 will be detected about 5-7 minutes later.
I also have one of the air drive where i can stream music or video from a portable box, most of the time it won't even connect, but the phone detect the signal, if it connects, it won't stream.
If a wifi signal connects, just moving a meter or two away from the router will disconnect.
In all cases the wifi signal detected is very strong.
Next day
7th unit in store inspection found a dark grey stuck pixel in a dark grey background using pixel testers.
8th unit, the greyish silver side of the phone was made very bad.
Next day did not exchange phones
9th unit one tiny speck of dust right at the top of the right corner of the screen.
10th unit, there were two white spot on the bezel, one next to the ear piece and sensor and the other on the side near the volume, both on top next to the screen.
before I check the 9th and 10th phone I did say I will check 2 more unit and if unlucky I will return it to samsung and have the phone's wifi fixed instead, as I did have a good screen.
Well I took the 9th phone as the 1 speck of dust didn't stand out that much.
upto now the phone is working very well.
there you go, my short story.
It's interesting to see that there seem to be quality control issues with devices sold by Hong-Kong retailer and a brazilian retailer.
Both locations are known to have a lot of fake or "fell of the truck" electronic devices, so I stand by my earlier hypothesis that they might not be devices from a batch Samsung ever intended for sale.
(This does not mean the seller knew about it, any part of the delivery chain can be the cause)

[Q] Should I return my N7 32gb? (Screen lift)

Hi all
I bought the new nexus 7(c90) 32gb a few days ago from PC world along with the 2 year guarantee. Out of the box it was working perfectly and I began setting it up as you do .
Anyways after around 10 mins of using it a tiny flake of the silver plastic bezel felt loose and then fell off so I have this 4mm black "scrape" on the corner of my N7's bezel but as this is so small (I will try to include a pic) I am just putting it down as wear and tear
However here is my bigger issue. After reading how many 8gb/16gb N7's had the dreadful screen lift I decided to check mine. It seems that the middle of the left side of the screen is higher than the right side and does not sit flush with the bezel however it's barely sitting a width of a hair above it. I can run my nail from the middle of the screen to the right and feel the bezel is higher than the screen however when I do the same to the left side my nail simply falls off. If I hold my N7 horizontally and look down at it , the left side is higher than the right as the bezel cannot be seen towards the middle of the screen. If you look at the left side you can sort of see the screen bulging out by the smallest amount and if you push on the screen you can see a very very small amount of screen flex.
I would really appreciate any advice. I asked my parents to buy this as a Bday present me as these N7's are really good value for money and this being my first proper tab I really wanted to flash roms ect but due to the screen lift/bezel issue im not sure what to do. PC world claim to refund or replace any item that develops a fault within 21 days. Spoke to my parents and they tell me if it's that small of an issue I’m just better off leaving it. Yesterday I want to a large shopping centre and tested out some N7's(not sure on gb's) and 2 of the 3 displayed a similar issue however due to the rush I’m not 100% sure. Also tested Tesco’s 16gb and there was no screen lift.
I'm worried that after a while the screen issue may get worse. After some reading last night I read that 32gb's are excluded from this design flaw so Is there a possibility of me owning a faulty one? . Do you think PC world would accept these as "faults?" . If I'd never seen the thread on screen lift then I most likely would have never noticed anything. .
Hope all this makes sense, any questions please ask!
thanks!
I bought one yesterday mate from Currys and I didn't think mine was bad until I compared it against the display model in store today. Mine had a lot of screen lift and I could easily get my finger nail between the screen and the bezel, the quality was poor to say the least.
I took it back today and had a really good chat with the guys at Currys and they were mega helpful. I ended up exchanging it for a new unit and its near on perfect so I'm chuffed to bits.
You won't get close to getting a tablet of this spec for the money. Take it back and get another one.

thanks for the reply. I'm also able to wedge my nail in the gap between the bezel and left side of the screen. I am strongly considering returning it back in the next few days however I'm not sure if they will accept it as the screen lift isn't that noticible initially . Also how did the exchange process go?, did you just get a new boxed replacement or did you ask them to open up a few?.
Cheers

Definitely get it replaced.
-Brought to you by Marino's Nexus 7-
Mine was quite noticeable because even though I hadn't had the tablet a full 24hrs there was already dust and bits gathering down one side of the screen which made it stand out even more. The screen lift was something I could only see getting worse. I actually took the back off for a nosey before I exchanged it and I could see there were missing screws down the side of the bezel which I believe is how Asus are trying to combat the screen lift.
The two guys I spoke with at Currys were obviously in to their gadgets as well and were aware of the quality issues with these tablets and said if I wasn't happy I could have my money back or exchange it for something else, or they said I could try another one and see how I got on. I personally didn't suggest opening them until I found one I was happy with as I appreciate they wouldn't be able to sell them then.
I'm happy with my new one though and I'm really glad I exchanged it.

I took 2 back to tesco both within 48hrs, both suffering screen lift, my 3rd has it ever so slightly, less than 0.25mm but as it's in a case it hasn't got any worse so I'm happy to live with it as is.
So yes take it back as it is a known fault.

I bought one from Staples and after couple of days of use I too found the screen lift on the left side. I finally returned it yesterday morning. Then in the evening I got a new one from Office Depot. So far its free from any defect. I hope it stays that way. Also my new one starts with serial no. CA0K. The one was defective was C90K.

Yes even though there are known issues and we've had bad experiences, don't get clouded in to thinking this isn't a good tablet because it is and I personally think it's well worth the perseverance. I've now got it in an official Asus neoprene flip case and a zagg invisible shield screen protector, looks the dogs

Thanks for all the replies!
I will be going in for a replacement tommorrow, I just hope that they will accept it. Like I said before, the screen lift is not very apparent however it is there. If the staff disagree and kick up a fuss that there is no screen lift or the screen lift has no negitive effects then what's the best course of action?
Since buying the N7 and discovering it had screen lift + chipped bezel I don't have the satisfaction of it being "mine",really wanted to flash roms and experiment but the confusion in returning it or not kept me stock :crying: . The N7 I have does not have any light bleed, ghosting and I'm pretty sure the colours of the screen are normal. Should I check this on my replacement N7 when I get it?
Also I'm looking at a N7 starting with C90 right?
Another thought is getting a refund and saving up for a 32gb nexus 10 . Also A N10 would cost me around £200 extra . I initaily went with a nexus7 as it was cheap for the high specs, In my budget and as it is my first android device & tablet allows me to learn & tinker with it with no regret compared to a almost half grand N10. I have also heard on here that many users downsized from a 10" to a 7" . Could anyone shed their opinion?
P.s: I have attached some images
I'm returing mine for black lines , the only thing is I can't find the warranty card . Do I need it ?

I'm so shocked that Google hasn't stepped in to improve the quality on the 32 gig models after all the problems with the 8 and 16. I love Google products but quality must come first not quantity. I used to work for Sony and this would've been totally unacceptable.
Return it and open the replacement right in the store and continue to do that until you get a good one.
Return it right away. The more tablets that get returned because of this "screen lift" the better. Maybe next time they will not repeat the same mistake.

Just an update
Went in and was able to get a replacement N7, Checked this one in the store and it had pretty much no screen lift apart from a very very very slight lift from the left towards the bottom. We also checked another one inc a display model and they were much worse. I also went snooping in various shops to look at the N7 and all of them had some sort of screen lift.
Overall I'm quite happy with the new one, my only complaint is that there is a small amount of backlight bleeding in the bottom left corner if the brightness is set at 100%. If the brightness is on auto or below 50% you cannot really see it unless you are actively looking for it.
I've heard much worse issues with the N7 so I'm happy with this one. Am I right the LED's are only located on the left side of the tablet?
I'd return it again. I've returned 3 and my newest is flawless. there are good units out there, you will find one!

Dark red areas while watching Netflix

Just started using my GS4 to watch Netflix and areas of the screen were completely dark red. The picture wasn't pixilated at all, but there we clumps of this red mess here and there in every frame. So it's not that the video wasn't loading correctly.
Is anyone else having this issue? What could this be?
Also, this is already a replacement device but I am still in my 14 day return period. Will I have any luck with AT&T giving me a second replacement since, yet again, I got a shotty device?
I left Samsung behind after having problems with the Infuse... Came back to them for the S4 thinking I was going to get top of the line. Seems like there QC dropped the ball though.
