Note 2 failed drop test - Galaxy Note II General

Just came accross this youtube video of Note 2 torture test... the phone survived other elements including water but not drop test...

I wouldn't put much faith in drop tests. Each situation is different.
My one x fell out of my pocket while I was riding a bike and only the tiniest scratch. Dropped it again from half the height while standing still and cracked the screen.
Its all about the angle that it lands on and your luck really. Most phones will crack if it lands on an awkward angle

gorilla glass really is glass....

Found out the hard way, it met concrete
Phone works fine though
Yep I shattered mine a few weeks ago. Replacement glass is about $50. It's really not that difficult to change. Make sure the glass you buy comes with adhesive attached. That will save a lot of time. Also wear rubber gloves so you don't smudge the inside of the screen.
Did you get it on ebay? Just wondering if the ones from ebay are not just plastic knock-offs

Wow! That looks awful. I guess screen protectors don't really offer much protection. XD
If i did not have screen protection the glass would fly away an i woudl have lcd exposed..... it hit the ground with rhe corner where the camera is anx this part was not covered by the foil... there is actually a small hole there.
I will by another ishieldz after repair for sure!!!!

I am VERY disappointed at the Atrix's gorilla glass, but I should have known better than to trust marketing. I've managed to scratch two screens in less than three months with zero effort.
The first was by brushing a nearly-blunt knife's edge against it, the second by letting it drop exactly TEN centimeters on a metal table. This is ridiculous, by all the marketing involving it, you would believe it to resist it to anything short of a point-blank shot. Long way from that to knife-rubbing.
and that is why I purchased two phones
No seriously tho where did u buy ur part from? Ebay ?if so is it the same?
It really depends on the angle it falls on. I've dropped mine on concrete once but I had a basic case on and it saved it. Get case guys its worth it try ebay.
Yeah the Gorilla glass is terrible. I have a non Gorilla glass phone and it has no scratches but my Atrix has dozens of tiny hairline scratches all in it. It kills me just to shine it in the sun. I'm wondering if it's really just a film on the glass getting scratched rather than the glass itself though...
completely agree with all of you. the atrix gorilla glass is terrible. I have had 3 iphones and never a scratched screen despite no screen protectors. I am very careful to put it in a pocket with nothing else. I let my slip in the car while putting in the car dock and it slid on the dashboard. picked it up and it has a 2cm long scratch in the middle of the screen that I can feel. this glass stinks.
Folks, you really need to look up the specs on Gorilla glass. It's not indestructible. There is a thread somewhere here from a couple of months back where I posted all the specs, and they are not that fantastic. Better than the regular glass used, sure, but Gorilla is especially susceptible to pressure.

I have had three phones with gorilla glass and haven't managed to scratch a single one of them. Brushing agains a knife isn't "zero effort" in our universe.
Am I just crazy lucky then? I've dropped my phone numerous times and the I as of yet don't even have a single scratch on my screen let alone any type of serious cracks. Compared to previous phone screens this thing is indestructible.
I guess next time make sure it hits the concrete with the corner where the front cam is
What sux is that all 40 dollars screens on ebay are not oem parts. Oem is 110

I managed to have mine fly out of my hand as I took it out of my pocket and it fell right onto concrete from like three feet. And of course it was the day that I didn't want to put it in the case. No scratches or shattered glass on the Gorilla Glass, just some scuffs and dings on the battery cover. I got another battery cover from Motorola for free and you can't even tell I dropped it. Works fine. Definitely got lucky. My wife dropped her iPhone 3GS in a parking lot and it totally shattered.
Hmmm.....I understand that Gorilla glass isn't indestructible, but it sure is pretty scratch resistant IMO. I am in a trade that my hands are dirty pretty often and I have yet to have a single scratch on my screen. I am still pretty impressed overall with the screens. My Captivate was the same way.
The picture from the OP shows that it took a hit in the corner, probably the most vulnerable (and probably common) place for it to break. Any phone would suffer the same fate. (unless you have a good case of course).
Not complaining... It was my clumsiness. $36.54 plus shipping for OEM part replacement from these ppl:

Screen chipped after 6 days of ownership!

As per the title.
I wouldn't mind, but I haven't been abusing the phone in any way. It has not been dropped, bumped in to or had anything placed or dropped on the screen. It has always been placed in a pouch after use and there is nothing inside the pouch that could scratch or chip it. But there it is, 1cm below the 'S' in Samsung - a 1mm diameter chip on the screen. It wasn't there yesterday, but it's there today.
I phoned Orange and told them, expecting to be told to take a running jump, but they are delivering a replacement handset to me tomorrow, so that is one bit of good news for me. A screen protector will then be applied ASAP!
Is this screen, purportedly made from Gorilla Glass, generally just ridiculously easy to chip and/or scratch? Or have I just been very unlucky? Or is Gorilla Glass just generally **** (which is the conclusion I am being drawn to after hearing plenty of scare stories regarding the latest HTC phones, and seeing a colleagues Desire S which is absolutely chipped and scratched to buggery)?
It's strange, but I've come from a HTC Desire after 18 months with no screen protector having ever been applied and being kept in a similar pouch to my GS2, and there isn't a mark on the screen...
Bizzare, i have mine a good few months now and have dropped it twice and it's fine, granted i have a case and a screen protector but i was hammered drunk the weekend and took my phone out of my pocket to answer a call in a crowded bar and someone barged by and the phone went out of my hand onto the floor face down, cue me picked it up and not a scratch on it so i have no idea what happened to yours mate for a phone so slim it's amazing, one only has to look at this video.
That can only be unlucky, I dropped mine down a flight of stairs in a pub and watched as it went like a £400 slinky with only a £3 ebay case to protect it and it was fine. The screen is pretty tough.
I've beat mind to death since release and nothing noticeable.

Sounds like a manufacturing defect in the glass more than anything else.
Its probably a good idea to use screen protectors and some form of a case to anyone else reading this that hasn't bottom one yet.
I'm not trying to be the "I told you so guy" (I hate people like that) but I was in the same situation as OP myself using a different phone, and I'd like to save someone else from suffering the same fate...

I'm inclined to agree. The phone certainly hasn't been mistreated in any way, so I can't think of any other reason for it to appear.
Dropped my phone yesterday onto solid flooring tiles at work and it just bounced a few times and not an issue.
It's a plus of the plastic used IMO. Yes it feels tacky but it's damn strong and absorbs force extremely well. Weight also helps.
I had my Galaxy Ace get a scratch in the top-left corner about .8cm long. Sure, Gorilla Glass seems more resistant to minor scratches you get from being in a pocket, but it's by no means invincible.
I scratched my screen on the 2nd day of having it just by it being in my jean pocket on its own. Since that I always put it in a soft case if I'm wearing jeans, but still managed to get another one in roughly the same place... I had my Desire for about 16 months and dropped it many times and no scratches on the screen lol typical. Can only see the scratches if I look for them though so not too bad.
defected glass is the biggest possibility. My GS2 unknownly got out of my pocket when I was sitting, but no scratch at all
Gorilla glass should have a somewhat higher surface hardness, that's all. Nothing magical about it, except the hype.
And increasing surface hardness usually makes a material more brittle, meaning it chips and cracks more easily (and dramatically).
You can't have it all...

Whether or not a gorilla glass, i always prefer to apply an invisible shield by zagg, as soon as i take out the phone off its box. I have seen the result and its tremendous.
One phone had shattered glass but because invisible shield was applied, touch screen was still usable and one phone fell off from about 10 feet hight and nothing happened to it as because of the same.
Just my two cents.
Cheers
my phones bn gud past 3 months.. i think u r "careless" bro
I also chipped my screen.. I had a bottle opener on my car keys and forgot which pocket 2 put them in. So they can get scratched quite easily although the chip is tiny. I think a pocket pouch would probably have prevented this. I love the slipperyness of the screen and will never cover it.

i actually have had the same thing happen to mine.mine cracked above the ear piece to the out side edge where the glass is at its thinnest point.i have a case and it hasnt been dropped.almost as if it was point loaded from underside of glass.pissed me off as i imported my phone on release.just learnt to live with it

Note build quality. 4 metre fall

30 minutes ago I accidentally dropped my note. It fell about 4 metres down on a floor. Result: not a scratch. It still works perfect. And my heart also started beating again...
Kudos to samsung

wait you mean it fell from 4m and has no bumps/damages of any sort? you had a protective case on it?
youre lucky some have reported broken screens and stuff from 1 meter. Guess it wasnt on concrete

My Note doesnt have any covers or screen protectors, i dropped it while i was standing. It fell on concrete and there is only a tiny dent on the corner where it fell. if the bezel wasnt there the phone would have been damaged far worser.
Maybe u got lucky..

Same happened to me. Fell on a concrete floor (in a parking house), and the only damage was a small dent on the corner. Didn't have any case or other protection on it.
I've dropped my Note more times than I can remember (at least half a dozen good drops) often on to concrete and two of those times it skidded along the ground on the screen.
The battery door sometimes pops off and the battery cover is scuffed. I have three dents in the light grey plastic trim around the sides (where the buttons are), some barely-visible scuffing of the black trim that stands up around the screen and light, short scratches on the the glass face BUT only on the bezel area surrounding the screen. Interestingly there are no scratches on the glass over the screen.
This is with a bare Note - no cover and no screen protector. I would say that's pretty good build quality. Whenever a reviewer speaks ill of "typical Samsung plastic construction" I chuckle. It's a feature of the phone to me!

funny i quite agree with this as well... whenever i see a post that says scratches on the note's screen just by putting in pockets makes me smile... i feel as though i am one of the lucky few to have a really tough device... i dropped my note half a dozen times about a meter in height and still working flawlessly... i do have 1 or 2 slight (barely noticeable) dents on the bezel as a result but very satisfied with the note's build.. who said plastic aint worth a s***
i myself prefers the screen to be bare, no protectors... just doesn't feel right with any of the screen protectors
It boils down to the angle the phone hit when it land and the surface

I am not so obsessive with the Note but I stay away from alcohol.
You got lucky. Mine fell from just over 3 feet and it chipped the side of the glass. Thankfully it didn't crack the screen or damage the LCD.
I stepped over my note by car accidentally twice , but thnx god my note survived it,cause i got the latest ICS update...↖(^▽^)↗

I've dropped mine about 7 times or so. Just yesterday as I was getting into my SUV with track pants and it slid out and hit the pavement. Landed on the glass surface and slid. A few dents and nicks on the bezel. No scratches on screen to date.
I don't know why people buy a case for the phone. When the phone is in a hard plastic case when you buy it. Basically you are protecting the case with a case.
My S2 screen got scratched when I sat on it with my keys in the same pocket. My mistake.

Scratch Test Gorilla Glass 3

Gorilla Glass 3 is unscratchable (if that's a word) ?
It does not appear that he is using much pressure but none the less nice to see that it may be more resistant to scratches. I can't believe that it would not show any marks but it does look like a move in the right direction.
http://www.sammobile.com/2013/04/22/samsung-galaxy-s4s-scratch-test/
Reminds me of the Ginsu knife commercials from years ago.
Those test are a joke. Use a diamond or rub some silica on it. Guarantee it will scratch.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Xparent Cyan Tapatalk 2
Get some silica like mentioned and see how fast it scratches.
Sent from my GT-N7100
Yeah, been posted a few other places. The real test is if it resists sand, since it's pretty easy for that stuff to end up in your pockets and on your clothes, especially if you're in the Midwest or you go to the Beach.

[Q] Gorilla Glass 3

What have been your experiences with Gorilla Glass 3? The unit on mine cracked with a minor drop, although given it was a drop suffered directly to the face. But a two week phone already cracked. I had better experiences with Gorilla Glass 2 on my galaxy s2
How do car windshields sometimes just chip and sometimes crack all the way across, with a similar sized hit from a rock?
I wouldn't blame your glass, just luck of the draw.
Plus isn't GG supposed to be scratch resistent(not that it totally is) moreso than impact resistent?

Consider yourself lucky if you ONLY cracked the glass. A number of us, including myself, have had experiences where the OLED broke off a "minor drop". In all honesty, you were unlucky AND lucky. If the phone still operates and you can look past the obvious cosmetic blemish (or scar, however you'd like to see it), then ride it out until the price of Gorilla 3 glass comes down. At least you may still have something that operates. Better that then seeing your phone go completely black.
One more note: can you show us where the phone landed on? I'm willing to bet 100 internets that it landed on the sides or corners. A large number of people here have had face down drops and come up clean (as in flat impact on flat surface.)
That sucks bro, I work a pretty labor intensive construction job and I keep my phone in an otterbox with the provided otterbox screen protector. I have dropped my s4 from roof to basement (roughly a 30 foot drop) and my phone is still unscathed. Same with the s3 I had for about a year and a bit. Probably dropped it 200 times, never had a problem. Just lucky I guess.
i guess it really depends how the phone drops, my friend also work in construction, he dropped his S3 from the 3rd step of a ladder last years and it shattered, his S4 fell from the top of a similar ladder and had a very slight chip on the plastic strip around the phone but no screen damage. Corner shots can be especially deadly
You guys need to quit playing around with your phones while at work. That's the problem - your punishment for goofing off.

No but i do agree. If you're careless, or accidentally drop the phone, you should be responsible for your acts, i have dropped my phone a few times before, thankfully, nothing ever happened, but if one day it does, the only person i'll blame is myself, not the construction of the phone, and definitely not gorilla glass 3. It's a phone, not a tank. Nothing is ever specified in any documentation that the phone is supposed to resist any drop.

Samsung's flexible display is awesome.
My experiences were good for the first 30 hours of my phone ownership, although I guess I can't be too upset at a thin piece of glass shattering upon contact with concrete.
Is there any clear cut way to tell the difference between a broken digitizer and just a broken glass? I can touch anywhere on the screen and it works fine, until I get a shard of Gorilla Glass in my thumb... I could always just shell out $220 for a whole new assembly, but I'd really rather not considering I spent a good amount of my check last week getting the phone.
ouch, you should be more careful.
The glass and digitizer are built together. You will need to buy them both built together. Disassembling the phone isn't too difficult though if you are good with fixing things you might be able to install it yourself.

When the digitizer is broken the touch capabilities don't work. It rarely breaks as its a piece of material more than anything

I dropped mine when getting out of the backseat of an SUV. I had the phone in my lap, forgot it was there, slid out and heard a loud SMACK on the rocky asphalt. I looked below and saw my phone laying screen down upon the dirty, New York stone parking lot. I reluctantly bent down and sighed, resigning myself to a $650 charge on my credit card next time I hit up an AT&T store. I picked it up to inspect the damage and...
Nothing. It was perfect as the day I took it out of the box. <3 GG3
Dropped it On a tile floor, bounced around, and very minimal damage.. Dropped from my hand without a case so 4-5 foot drop. The chrome dented where it dropped and the glass sorta cracked/chipped a layer.. There are no breaks, just a small area of damage.. Was quite scared that more damage would be inflicted based on some of the criticisms going around about the poor build

If the material is soft enough to be flexible I doubt how scratch-resistant it is going to be, and would a screen protector even stay on? I predict people whining about scratches.
