[Q] Wait to RMA? - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So my device has the whine that deals with screen brightness, however I'm not sure if/when to RMA it. This seems to be the only issue. Display seems great and nothing else is wrong that comes to mind. But if later down the production line they remove all the kinks, would it be wise to try and RMA then if I so choose (say 6 months out)?

Screen burn in issue

So for the past few days my screen on the Nexus 7 has just been effed up. With the lift, burn in issue (well not bur in, but what I am assuming is a bad digitizer and screen), super bright screen for about 2 minutes and then it goes normal until you turn it off... then it is back to the waiting game. You can see the "burn in" under the pattern unlock.... so you tell me what you think.
This tablet has been babied beyond belief, if it is not in my hand it is in it OEM case being carried in my backpack.... so this is an issue with the actual tablet. Has anyone else had this issue yet?
Also, I started the exchange process before everyone was informed they would need to pay $280 again and wait for a new device. I will not give them more money, as I do not even do that with computer companies like Dell or HP. I would much rather just send it in and wait.... because if I get another one that is messed up it would be a nightmare of $300 staying out of my hands at all times.
Money is not the issue really here, it is the fact that there is a noticeable amount of "bad" devices out there in the first batch that should be recalled.... I suppose we shall see.

What defects do I need to check for?

Going to go buy one in a bit at Staples. I've read about the screen lifting, dead pixels, color/tint problems, and screen flickering. Is there anything else I should check for so I don't end up noticing it outside of the 14 day return policy?
Don't look for the defects straight away! Just enjoy the device and then if you notice one, return it. The whole point of buying a new device is to enjoy it, not look for defects first thing.

But if you want to get your checklist outta the way, check out the threads on defects, specifically the ones with polls, so you have a nice handy list right there.

I would at least check the screen for any bad lifting/wobbling but otherwise just use it normally and enjoy.
After 2 previous devices with several different faults between them, I'm now on my 3rd and even after several days of use I find myself handling the thing as though it will disintegrate at any moment!
It's like "eek, was that a creak then?", "gasp! that dot there, is it a dead pixel?" etc, etc.
None of my worries have turned out to be anything, this unit has been rock solid and perfect in every way but the previous experiences have made me overly conscious of everything and spoiled the experience a little.
Just enjoy it, if it has a fault or develops one down the line, deal with it then.
Staples isn't going to stick you with a defective device ....or will they? If its defective I'm thinking they'll take it ba

Just based on the complaints here (keeping in mind my N7 is completely defect free from day 1...read my story here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1814856) I would check for:
1. bad speaker
2. screen lift
3. dead pixels
4. properly maintaining and holding a charge (should get about 8-9 hours of general use easy...you know, not gaming, but all the other stuff)
5. screen bleed
6. creaking edges around the bezel area
7. able to connect and maintain a wireless connection
8. doesn't overheat
9. doesn't shutdown, or reboot without your consent
10. Is able to shutdown and/or reboot with your consent
11. color saturation or some such nonsense
12. screen flicker (mine does it only in Tapatalk leading me to believe it has something to do with the software...I don't think it's a hardware thing personally)
13. touchscreen dead spots after playing something that pushes the GPU like a Tegra 3 game.
14. charges correctly (should take less than 4 hours or something)
There might be more, but these seem to be the most loudly complained about that I noticed.

How many times can we request a replacement?

I know I'm paranoid, but since many ppl complain about the light bleed I started to think it is a common issue. However, I paid almost 450 for it so I have to be happy with it. My unit also has light bleed and I already requested a replacement. The customer service is great with no question asked. But how many times can we request a replacement? Once in the nexus 7 sub forum, a guy said he did it 6 times. I don't want to return it to get money back, I just want to be happy with it.

I think I recall someone being cut off either around 10, or they just gave up (with the Nexus 7 anyway), I'm not entirely sure though. In any case, I would probably either suggest waiting as long as you can before requesting a replacement (unless the issue is severe-enough to hinder daily use) and waiting to see if any hardware changes are made/newer models available.
Although I don't really know what's Google's return policy. I think the Nexus 7 from Play Store had either 15 or 30 days to be RMA'd via Google, and then afterwards, you had to deal with ASUS directly (other retailers having similar policies). Not sure what the case is for the Nexus 10 and Samsung though.
As many as you want till your satisfied. Eventually you'll give up and either accept one with light bleed or get a refund.

in their policy they stated that they may give you a new one or a refurbished one as the replacement. So if you exchange it later, they might send you a refurbished. a refurbished one with fixed issue and a new one with issue.. not sure which one I want lol.

And you are saying that based on experience with multiple nexus 10 devices? Yeah....
Based on my experiences with the N7... infinite! Seems like I returned that many. They were supposed to be all new, but I swear they were just giving me returns because every one of them had bad screen lift or dead pixels. Now that was with Asus as the manufacturer, so Samsung may be different. I have a touch of bleed in the common area of the lower right corner, but otherwise it's an flawless device as far as I can tell. With a widespread minor issue like that though... you may get worn out trying to get a perfect one. You will probably end up with a device with no bleed and a big fat yellow spot, or dead pixels, or reboots. This has happened to me in the past. I returned a few Nexus S and the "perfect" device I got ended up having a pretty screen but a really low thermal threshold... it wouldn't take much to get the thing to reboot. Most custom kernels were unusable. The Nexus 7 was an awesome device, but I could not get one without light bleed, or screen lift (biggest problem), or dead pixels (like 8 dead pixels!). This Nexus 10 has amazing build quality compared to those devices. I'm blown away, and unless I go to the boot screen with full brightness, I absolutely don't see the bleed so I'm just going to hold fast.
After two you should seek a refund instead of wasting everyone's time.

Have to vent- 2nd RMA in Progress

So, I just have to vent. My Nexus 7 is now in the process of its 2nd RMA. I bought a reconditioned tablet off E-bay for during one of those $129 sales. Less than 18 hours after receiving my tablet, I was in the middle of a game and it rebooted, only to then stick at the Google Screen. Nothing would work to fix it, Wug's, or even ADBing the image files. So, off to Asus it went. They apparently replaced the entire motherboard and sent it back, with a note that the issue was a LED (Error) Indicator, whatever that means. My tablet then functions properly for about 80 more days, and then suddenly, when I go to reboot it, it turns off, but will not turn on, no matter what. The battery charge indicator does not function, no LED, nothing, and it was as if the battery was suddenly disconnected internally (it has not suffered any drops, jolts, etc.) and lives in a protective case. If I hook it up to the computer, I get a weird driver I have never seen before (not APX but something else, which I cannot recall at the moment), I would have taken it apart and done a battery disconnect if I was not still within my RMA period. Is such an excessive number of issues a problem for this device? I have never had this many issues with any other android device I have ever had. I cannot complain about Asus's RMA process but it is ridiculous that a remanufactured device would fail less than 24 hours out of the box, and then need to be RMA'ed yet again less than 3 months afterwards.
I love it when it works, but have others had devices that have had so many issues? I am not sure if it was the remanufacturing process and poor quality assurance with it or what, but seems there are a lot of similar hardware issues from those remanufactured lots on here.

I've had my nexus 7 since launch and no problems here. Never had it in a case or anything. You did buy a used tab... I Will say that my tab would do random reboots so I finally rooted and unlocked my tab last week and put on a custom ROM. My tab is flying ATM. Maybe throw on a custom ROM on??

I bought mine second hand, running android L developer preview and runs like a beast and the battery is outstanding ! Shame to hear you are having issues though
I have also had mine since launch, and I think OP simply got a lemon.
I have the random reboot issue that most people seem to have, but a part from that, none I've heard about have anything even close to the kind of trouble OP had.
The most common weakness I hear about from my friends owning the N 7 is battery drain, and that's not a hardware problem.

Thanks all. Got my tablet back from RMA, and works like a charm. They had to replace the board and some heat shields it appears from the packing slip from the RMA. Fingers crossed, as the tablet absolutely rocks when it works. Battery is outstanding compared to my 2012's. Hopefully the 2nd time was the charm.

can you still process an RMA without receipt. I bought my Nexus 7 from Staples less than a year ago, and am planning to RMA because of dead pixels.

I bought mine online, off eBay. I never had to provide a receipt for mine, though I was asked when I purchased it and where. As a remanufactured device, it came with a 90 day warranty, so you may just have to tell them the purchase date and location.

If you enter the correct serial number for your device it should auto populate those fields, but if not, it is under Eee Pad as the Product Type, and the model is Nexus 7 (2013) of course.
If anyone else runs into the reboot and freezing on the Google logo error (even after forced restarts), you need to pop the back off and disconnect the battery for a few seconds. Easy enough to do, but it's a pain in the ass and shouldn't need to be done in the first place, but if you want to avoid an RMA and shipping and such, this will fix it.
Also, Lolipop preview completely fixed my random reboots. Not a one. Before that, when I 4.4'd, Franco's kernels also completely fixed random reboots.

Thanks for mentioning the battery disconnect fix pbassjunk!! Fixed my problem, and good thing because I'm way out of warranty.

screen retention (ghosting)

Anyone having issues with ghosting on there v20?? Any fix if so r is it Rom related. In on vs995 weta Rom 5.0.7 7.0
I'm starting to have issues with image retention on mine.
I'm stock unrooted.
I wonder if this is covered under warranty.. it's not super annoying but still.
I am having a curious issue with the second screen. Under bright light or sunlight, the top right corner of my screen starts to flicker. Well, the brightness increases and decreases. At the beginning quite slowly and then at a higher pace. However, when I'm indoors it doesn't seem to happen, or at least not too foten.
I've tried with and without automatic brightness. I have also tried installing Lux and the issue still persists.
What I realised is that the flickering comes from the backlight of the second screen, and if I disable it, problem solved. I might Have to give it a hard reset and hope is not a hardware problem.
Has anyone experienced the same?
I posted something similar a while ago on this topic. On my left side of the screen I could see what seemed to be screen burn or something. It would be a yellowish tint that would display the keyboard and part of a screen from the app. But it seemed to be the same app everytime. I never found a solution, I had to turn the phone in for a different reason. The ffc just stopped working and would freeze my phone up.

I haven't tried to take the phone to see if it can be fixed, but I have done some research and after reading many posts of people having either the G4,V10 and V20 most have been honored under warranty having their screens replaced but the problem comes back, some people claim having their screens more than one time.
I think I can live with it.. I don't wanna risk having the phone scratched or damaged somehow by the person making repairs (I like to keep my phones in mint condition) and I have a Huge OCD problem lol
I think joining XDA is an indicator of having a degree of OCD
Although I'd class mine as low I'd not be happy with the retention exhibited in those pics.
Thankfully my V20 hasn't presented any inherrent problems so far, just the odd temporary ones that happen when modding, but they're soon remedied.
Since @emdroidle gave us root for the H990ds its been great having the chance to open it up and explore more of its potential.

As far as I've read this is just a quirk of these LCD screens that LG uses on their phones. It should go away pretty quick as the only time mine shows up like that is when the screen brightness is all the way or very bright for like 5 or 10 minutes. Mine goes away after 5 or 10 minutes.
Download sfilter from play store activate it at 10 % and image ghosting will go away ?

I was looking into the Warranty as well and just read that it can take up to 4 weeks to inspect and repair a unit, so no mobile for maybe 4 weeks or more and I'm not even sure they will accept the retention as a fault of the mobile itself, but give me the blame for it as there are some minor surface scratches from normal daily use.
So it seems the warranty is pretty much to the bin and reading stories from others about sending there phones with issues does not really make me want to send it back either. Who knows how long, and if declined giving me the blame, what a waste of time it has been. feel like iv Wasted enough time already.
They told me to make a full factory reset, which would of cause not solve the issue at all as I already knew - but I did it and sent the video of the retention afterwards - then I was told to look for scratches and I send them a video and 2 pics of what I could find and now being pointed out that maybe if they find out it is from damage that it just might be send back. Damage... Got to give me a break.
I'm not even sure what they would do with it if they accept the fault - would they begin to toy around with it or would they send me a new phone out of the box.

For a +500 Euro phone - retention/ghosting should not happen and yet it does. First phone I ever experiences this issue.

I did ended up replacing my phone, not under LG warranty though I paid 60 bucks to Sprint to get it swapped. I thought it was better than sending out my phone to LG and wait weeks..
Convenience was the what made me toss the 60 bucks for a new unit.
Though a month later I switched to T-Mobile and upgraded to the V30+
They paid the rest of my installments with Sprint which was half the cost of 2 V20's and also got to keep them.
I use my V20 as a multimedia device now.

Nice - seems like I'm not going to get much from the warranty on the screen issue and still not sure if I should send it back as I'm afraid they do something stupid to it. Well, if my phone melted down at some point I would still buy an V20 in replacement. Battery and SD card is just a win for me even with all the phones faults. Just so sad that LG did not fix a better screen for the V20 in regards of getting Ghosting/Retention.
Anyway - I just tried one of the fixes I found without jail breaking the phone and it does help a little but far from solved the issue at all. I have ghosting/retention all over the screen now and most likely just going to get worse over time as it has from the beginning of it.
I think the image retention is a bug. It randomly happens on mine. At first I thought it was a crappy screen but then it went away. It will even show dark image retention like using xda. And most of my retention around the inside 1/4 of the screen.

Sadly did not work here. Still have ghosting. 20% won't do either - il try 30%.
Ok I was getting ghosting which has been getting worse and wore the past month but in the past 2 weeks its been getting really bad on both displays, ontop of that my phone was dying in 20-25% range and going up to 100% charge just to drop like 10 minutes later to like 50% probably just the battery idk
I sent my phone in and here is what they marked on the warranty page
Symptom: Software failure
Repair: Download new software
I honestly hope they don't think its because I wasn't on the latest version of android because I kept putting it off or i'm gonna be pissed, especially since my warranty ends 3/18/2018 and these 2 issues have slowly been getting worse.

The culprit behind this is low contrast with high blue-output or cooler color temperature. If you are rooted, you can easily tone down the blue channel by a count of 20 (out of 256) and all is good. Also you don't have to use the phone as maximum brightness all the time, the screen itself is way too bright even for the least level.
2ndly, this ghosting is temporary and develops over time of use. It goes away for LCD.
OLED screens suffer from the permanent ghosting aka burn-in, though its coming over time is delayed by quality and improvement of the manufacturing process. Honestly, OLED's have higher saturation, more vibrance, higher contrast which makes them appeal to human eye but it comes at a cost.

Oh cool. thanks for explaining that! I am not rooted... 1. too nervous of causing issues after root .. 2. mine isn't rootable (on most recent security patch)..
so is there anything I can do to help with the blue output?

yeah that seems to be what i've read too... I just typically keep my phones for a while and burn in or ghosting worries me...
