KFHD 8.9 Browser - 7" Kindle Fire HD General

I've been looking to buy a nexus 10, until a week or so ago, Amazon dropped the price of KFHD 8.9 from $299 to $250 for just one day though (using a coupon). It got my attention, since the price difference is big enough ($150 less compared to 16GB N10). I checked out the device at Staples, and really like form factor. Very light, and soft touch grippy material. I'd like to buy one, but have a few questions that I am trying to get answered. Hope some of the owners of KFHD 8.9 can help.
1. I tried out the device, and the Amazon UI wasn't very appealing. Will need to install CM10 to be usable for me. From looking around the forums, CM10 is still under development, and not fully functional yet. Can anyone speak from personal experience?
2. Browser
A lot of what I'll use this device is for browsing. Amazon's 'Silk' isn't exactly that. Loading of pages takes a while, scrolling choppy, and pinch to zoom, at hit or miss. Has anyone tried alternatives to the browser? Dolphin, boat, any others? How good/bad is it for browsing with multiple (5-6) tabs open at the same time?
Appreciate your time, and TIA.

Hello!
1. I rooted and sideloaded Nova Launcher Prime. Looks and feels like CM10 except the home screen transitions are laggy, don't know why. The app drawer transitions are perfect. So until further notice I left the home screen with just one screen so no more transitions there but it looks and feels great.
2. Loaded default ICS browser and works great and feels faster than Silk. Will post a link if you need, I found it on KF HD 7 forums in a post with useful applications when rooted.
Both launcher and browser were loaded in system/app.

Thanks kls2k.
How's the performance with the ICS browser? Loading up a site like theverge? scrolling, zooming?

Engadget.com scrolls smooth but pinch zooming lags a bit.
I think dolphin browser does a better job there.

Sorry, meant theverge.com
Engadget.com is fine scroll/pinch zoom. Buttery smooth.

Seems far off from roms, don't expect to flash CM10 right away. Most people rooting and getting a new look with launchers. I like the amazon stock gui, I'm weird I guess :/.

How smooth is the browser?

I know the stock is not as smooth as IOS but what about hardware accelerated browsers like dolphin and opera? Is it silky smooth like the ipad?
Mine stock seems pretty damned smooth. It renders text quickly and once everything is up it scrolls with no hesitation. Of course I have plug-ins set to "on demand" so normally its like the ipad, no flash.
Even with activated flash it's smooth.
As an owner of both an iPad (1st gen) and a TF (Stock and Dolphin) my experiences are:
Websites optimised for tablet/mobile - No difference worth noting
Full desktop websites with lots of pictures - TF faster to render, Ipad a little smoother to scroll
Websites with flash and lots of dynamic content - TF wins hands down.
At the end of the day both of these devices look awful next to Chrome on win64 but they are starting to feel like decent browsers.
Completely subjective: All in all the iPad always "feels" a little smoother to me at everything. Web, just using the OS and everything. But it's a funny comparison - It's quite clearly not as good at any of the individual tasks and slower in general but somehow feels more graceful at the same time. I geuss that's the whole thing with apple though. Personally - I prefer the functionality of the TF.
With the latest update of opera I don't see how it can be smoother

If you turn off the open GL rendering the browser is extremely fast. The rendering isn't even needed.
With the new Opera Mobile 11, I could finally go back to the 2010 mode instead of the classic mode on xda.....

Oh, that reminds me, that I forgot to mention, that my stock browser is set to desktop instead of mobile ... the later makes no sense on a WiFi-only tablet in my opinion ... except when tethered to a cell phone maybe.
Also worth mentioning is, that the stock browser doesn't render some bad designed sites correctly ... e.g. golem.de
As a good alternative for such cases I use the tablet version of Maxthon, which is realy great, but also has two downsides ... it doesn't have a fast scroll button and it has problems with popup content like the player of accujazz.com radio. The stock browser does a better job here though not perfect.
Maybe a third browser is needed
I didn't try Opera so far because it's said, that flash implementation is still Beta state.
Personally - I prefer the functionality of the TF.

As all others here too
As long as you aren't a professional photographer, who needs the more accurate colours & higher colour depth (real 24 bit) and RAW image conversion iPad is the worse choice.
Hackers might be the second group of people who might prefer the iPad ... I noticed, that WiFi hacking tools e.g. are available there, but not on android ... astonishing fact, isn't it?
I find HC browsers faster than the iPad one (I only tested iPad 1) on most sites. On some with a lot of flash they can be slow. Smoother? Didn't notice, didn't care.
eli.kennedy describe the differences quite accurately to what I experienced.

Mine appears smoother with it on.
The iPad2's browser is much faster and smoother than the iPad 1's. It renders about 4 times faster.
I find the ipad2 browser much smoother than anything on my transformer. If browsing is the reason to have a tablet, AND you do not care about flash, than the iPad2 is a great choice.

Really, I can't understand why anyone smart enough to hangout on XDA would be recommending a locked-down, locked-in turd like the iPad2 (which is basically the default choice for people either too stupid, or too lazy to explore alternatives).
Sure there may currently be a lag problem with the Transformers browser when docked with the keyboard, but there are plenty of workarounds, like using the vastly superior Opera 11 browser, and it's doesn't affect page rendering speed, which blows the iPad2 out of the water.

I didn't know this is a known problem. I just got my Eee and dock and have been trying to fix this lag on a browser issue, but no go.
I tried changing the browser (Dolphin HD), change the Keyboard (Uses Asus and Android).
What is the workaround?
Heavily embedded java severely slows down the browser which is not an issue on other HC devices, or in fact, on the TF with Opera 11 so it should, and will get fixed.
Other than that, the browser is really zippy. As zippy as the Ipad 2. When your on par with speed, plus chrome bookmark syncing, tabbed browsing and flash, its no contest whose the winner.

I have tried accessing website with little Javascript embedded and still see the lag in both stock browser and Dolphin HD. So are you saying, currently, ONLY Opera 11 does NOT exhibit this problem?
Opera 11.1 seems to be the best, smoothest, most fluid browser yet. I prefer it over the stock, firefox, dolphin, etc. It just is so damn near-perfect.
What we'd like I'm sure is a full desktop port of Firefox and Chrome so we all have access to those delicious addons and extensions.

For me at least.
This page here:
http://proximityone.com/demographics2020.htm
was lagging for me in the stock browser, and works perfectly in Opera. I also can type in XDA easily while in Opera but in stock I cannot. Goggle instant works well in Opera but in stock it does not. Google apps such as reader, gmail, etc.. within the browser works well in Opera while the stock does not. This is the pattern I am making an assumption on.
All of which are non-issues in the stock browser for the Xoom. So, something has to be up with the stock browser.

Very strange, why do we have such different experiences? You Run Android 3.1, don't you?

new A500...looking for better browser

I picked a new A500 yesterday and I like the way it feels and looks but I'm disappointed with the browser. Everything feels laggy, even as I type this post. I feel that my iPhone 3Gs performs better. It came with 3.1 out of the box. Any tips on how to resolve this lag and poor browser experience I'm going thru? Thanks
Stock browser is good for me. You could try Aurora (experimental version of Firefox) it works well on the A500.

Dolphin for pad was good for awhile, but it hasn't been updated since July, 2011.
Back to Dolphin HD I went. Still better than stock, and if you get the bookmarks plugin, you can backup and restore all your bookmarks at will.

I think Maxthon 1.4 is better than 1.5
I like the previous version
+1 for Dolphin browser for pad. Although it's technically a beta release, I've been using it for about a month on stock 3.2 without any issues. It's very fast and the interface is a little cleaner than the stock browser. Bookmarks are only a swipe away, and other gestures also are supported---though maybe not obvious (touch the right-facing pointer icon located on the right end of the toolbar and enter your gesture anywhere in the shaded area). I've used Opera, Dolphin HD, etc. Like this browser the best so far.
best of them dolphin for pad , it runs very smooth when you are @ 1.4GHz
the neverending story... the browser! I tested all, and all in every new Version that came out, but so far... there is only one Browser i use, not cause its the best or the fastest...no:
Did anyone realize, that EVERY Browser, stock, Maxthon, Firefox, Dolphin etc. have all washed out colors, unsharp text, pictures and so on. The only one with really good looking sites, like on Desktop, is Opera. Try out yourself, open all Browser, look at google news page, then compare...
WHY IS THIS?
Opera has maaaany maaaany problems on Facebook, the Chatbars, Posts not posted etc., Youtube videos sometimes crashes, no adblock, but... fast and good looking!
Can anyone explain me this issue, or is it only my device? A500 Stock OTA update, not rooted...
none of these browsers will play facebook games such as ravenwood, too laggy. I posted a thread on this a month ago and someone said he got it working but the settings he came up with were NOWHERE , it was like he was just making up crap...something about flashmx offline settings.looks like I will have to wait until ICS comes out.
Browser
I like the boat browser myself.
firefox 9 has a revamped ui, especially designed for tablets: it behaves differently in portrait. It's still based on xul I think, but I find the startup to be quite fast and of course with the gig of ram it should stay loaded. quite stable too, but still doesn't run flash.
I use Maxthon the majority of the time. Firefox just doesn't give me the browsing experience that I want but I think eventually it will be pretty good.

Chrome performance

Is it just me or is chrome a fairly laggy experience with browsing? I mean I love everything abut it except that its very laggy with scrolling and loading on the nexus 7 . My evo 3d is smoother when browsing and its not even comparable with the new ipad. And i cant compare chrome on my 3d because I get tons of graphical glitches. I just feel that for being the standard browser on this device it should perform better. The aosp browser that comes with cm seems much faster and smoother but I get a lot of "this page is not responding" errors with it.

No, it's not just you. I have the same problems on my 12-day old Nexus 7. This is my first tablet and the whole experience has been disappointing. I will be returning it and begin a whole new search . I have never and do not own an Apple anything but more and more it seems I may end up with an iPad. But I'm not willing to give in just yet. The touch screen is a disaster. Although there may be a fix in these forums, I guess my thought process is, "why am I fixing a brand new tablet?" I didn't expect perfection with this first release but the basics like touchscreen, Chrome & speakers should not be problematic.
Try a different browser, Dolphin is really good, Firefox is good, Xscope (I think it's ugly) I hear works well, Tint, Boat (iOS Safari like), etc.
I've noticed that some web pages just don't work well on mobile, the newer XDA themes (the current one and the previous) have been laggy on every Android device I've read it on. The old yellow theme is perfectly smooth. Android Central can get laggy too, but there are tons of other pages with lots of content that are like butter. I dunno.
Chrome is pretty laggy in my experience. I just found out that the AOSP browser is actually better than Chrome in terms of speed and consistency. It even supports Flash!
Erm... Works fine imo? Switching tabs can have me waiting seconds fora page to render but besides that everything seems pretty close to optimal.
Imho Chrome isn't ready for daily use. Just installed dolphin, very fast, my browsing experience improved a lot.

I use Chrome on my Nexus and it's smoother than the stock browser,IMO. No lag or other issues at all. Very quick and snappy.
[Sent from my Nexus 7. Pardon errors.]
It lags for me when I open 9 tabs.
Will the next nexus have a longer screen?
I get some severe hitching sometimes where a page will start to load then I attempt to scroll and the UI doesn't respond for seconds. I kind of get that sometimes in other programs but Firefox or Dolphin seem much better about never freezing up for long periods and you can actually scroll when the page is still rendering. I use Chrome mainly because it has excellent integration with the desktop version which actually might be contributing to that problem. I was thinking about turning off the sync of things like omnibox history to see if it would make it get stuck less doing whatever it's doing. More likely though it's a problem with how it's rendering the pages and fitting them for the tablet but I can't do anything about that so I try to change little settings.

I agree 100%. After playing with everything on the market I have not found anything that handles flash as well as the older browser.I miss the full screen mode in firefox but being able to have flash work correctly is more important to me than full screen browsing or syc. Google should have left Crome as an add-on and used the regular browser on the N7.
Try firefox , it's awesome. Despite all good things about Firefox on android I still hate their UI .

Best browser for N10

I'm just looking for a good browser to use on a regular basis while Google gets their act together and fixes the freezing and crashing issues that exist with Chrome and the N10. What have you found works best with the N10? I'm using Firefox right now, which is fine but I would like to use something that handles tabs better.
Thanks.

If you like the feel of the normal stock browser on the phones I would suggest giving ocean browser a go. Personally I use that and chrome. Ocean is noticeably faster but some pages it looks a bit strange, like the screen ratio is a bit off. Hard to explain but other than that it's great. I'm hoping chrome will become decent with a few updates
If you are rooted you can download and copy the good old stock android browser into /system/app. Its extremly fast and fluid.
I highly recommend Scope Browser. I thought is was my Tablet causing crime to crash and lag. Been using it with no complaints. Its a paid app, but the dev keeps it updated
I really enjoy using the boat browser.....best one I have tried so far.
i agree with boat browser
i agree w/ dolphin and boat
they give the best desktop-like experience so far
You can't really go wrong with the ocean browser. Its the fastest browser experience on any android tablet IMO. Almost on par with the iPad
I've settled on the Boat browser after Dolphin and Opera abandoned Flash for I want a desktop experience similar to using Windows on my laptop without needing to install loads of apps to use some sites like Apple.
I tried the Ocean browser but gave up after it crashed when selecting full screen mode and there was no option to have desktop mode on all the time and got fed up re-selecting desktop mode every time a site changed it.
I paricularly like the Boat speed dialer implimentation and I use it for all of my book marks. It does mean that I need to return to the speed dial page for my bookmarks but because I have set that as the Boat home page then that is easy and quick to do.
It means my book marks are all stored within the browser and are not taking up space on the Android home screen which I can fill with app short cuts.
It also means there is no need for multiple tabs to be open at once for the Boat speed dialer page becomes the multiple tabs.
The bookmarks can still be saved as they are seperate from those on the speed dialer page.
AOSP Browser for me. There's something about the AOSP browser that I just love. dunno what it is though!
I love the layout of ocean, but for me, its not any faster than chrome on 4.2.1
for me its ASOP or Ocean they seem to be smoothest
I like chrome's layout, where it has the back and forward button built into the address bar which is nice since the N10's centered buttons are not rhe best design choice. But its really glitchy sometimes. It will run fast and smooth on some websites, then just call it a day and slow way down on others.
Dolphin Browser Beta has great potential it's quick scrolling and zooming, almost never stuttering. But Is very much a Beta and likes to close itself when things don't go quite right.
Regular dolphin browser felt the slowest on my N10
Ocean is Very fast and I love running it in full screen. But I've had some issues with websites not loading correctly.(scored 1,037 on Peacekeeper)
Boat is good all around. Stable, decent interface. it just seems to be a bit more sluggish than ocean and Dolphin Beta.
I did find another Post where someone figured out how to fix the Opera 12 User interface so it's not tiny. I'm giving that a shot for sure. Opera runs great on my O-Gnote.
I think any of these four is a Good choice depending on who you are and what you like.
I want to root and put the AOSP browser on there to try it, I'm just really gun shy with rooting.

That's true, ocean does default to the android agent.
I don't mind Boat at all. It's very good and is still installed on my N10 so I can bounce back and forth. I just find myself going back to Ocean more often because I like the popup controls. You mentioned before it was crashing on you, I haven't had that issue so far.
I do agree with your earlier post, being able to set the user agent to desktop by default would be a nice option to have in ocean instead of having to hit request desktop site everytime.

10.1 Pro Experiences & Performance Tips

I recently bought a Tab Pro 10.1 and I was quite disappointed with the performance of it. For a device that -- on paper, at least -- was really powerful, I felt like the entire experience was very sluggish and clunky.
I wanted to share a couple of tweaks I made that helped boost performance dramatically.
1. Ditch the Samsung launcher. As cool as some of those tiled screens looked, it felt really slow and choppy to me. I gave Nova Launcher a try (I've also heard good things about Apex and Launcher Pro) and was extremely impressed with it. The tweaks that yielded the best performance gains were:
Scroll Speed - Faster Than Light
Animation Speed - Faster Than Light
App Animation - Slide*
* The stock animation on the Galaxy devices [the window that starts out minimized and then grows in size] is very choppy; let me add that the "Icecream Sandwich" option offers even better performance, but I thought it looked a little tacky.
Because the device is running such a huge resolution, these animations still look fine when set to such a fast speed. On my phone (Galaxy S4), I toned the settings down a little bit, because they were too fast. On a huge tablet though, they feel great to me.
2. Tweak the Scale Multipliers
In order to do this, I had to unlock Developer Options. Unlocking this mode can easily be done without rooting. Simply go into Settings -> General -> About Device and click on "Build Number" tab 7 times. This will unlock Developer Options (it'll show up as an entry in your left menu). After unlocking this, go into it and change the following settings:
Window Animation Scale - 0.5x
Transition Animation Scale - 0.5x
Animator Duration Scale - 0.5x*
This settings netted huge gains. The tablet felt so much more responsive for me, especially with regards to animations. In particular -- and perhaps this is a complete placebo effect -- I felt that scrolling (web pages, app lists, etc) was dramatically improved. Sluggish scrolling has always bothered the hell out of me with Android devices. This seemed to help a lot (again, it could just be a placebo, but I genuinely think it helped).
After making these two changes, it seriously feels like a brand new device (okay, well, I just bought this 2 days ago, it already is a brand new device). I went from being extremely disappointed in the performance to blown away by how snappy / responsive everything feels now. I know the 10.1's are sort of lacking with the ROMs we have available, but these tips will help a lot. Please note that all of this is sort of generic advice -- you can find most of this info available on other sites. However, I just wanted to share the changes I made that netted me the most dramatic performance improvements.
I'm guessing a lot of people are probably well-versed in suggestions like this, so hopefully I'm not preaching to the choir.
I hope this helps!
Thanks a lot. I am looking to buy one. but can't decide which one I should get, the 8.4 or 10.1
I don't like that samsung cpu alot. And I think the 8.4 come with snapdragon 800. but I like the size of 10.1. sigh....
Thanks for the info. You're right, just switching to Nova Launcher (and rebooting) made a difference in the RAM usage. Tried your settings, they're nice and snappy. Plus I must admit having the launcher bar at the bottom feels a lot more natural.
I did not believe it really fast .. I do not recognize tablet .. thank you
This worked wonderfully!

The tablet is not necessarily "slow" per se, but it feels slow and sluggish. For whatever reason, stock Android animations have always been terrible. Have you ever used an iOS device before? I prefer Android for about a billion reasons, but one thing iOS absolutely nails is their animations in their user interfaces. Everything on those devices feels as smooth as butter. One thing I've found is that that this is all a matter of perception; for some people, it doesn't bother them at all. For others, it drives them crazy. It's subtle, but once you notice it, it's really annoying. It's almost impossible not to notice if you've used an iOS device for an extended period of time (I owned an iPhone for a couple years). Responsiveness is something that Google has focused on (check out search Google for "Project Butter" for more info).
With every Android device I've used, the animations have looked cheap and clunky. They're not smooth (and never have been). They are choppy and they stutter; the best way I can describe it is like when you're playing a computer game on high settings and your framerate starts to drop. It doesn't look smooth and natural anymore -- it looks inconsistent. Android animations often look like frames are missing.
With the stock settings, go to your home page and start cycling through the pages quickly. For me, whenever it loaded those tiled pages (the thing with the calendar/email widgets, or the digital newspaper page), there was a noticeable hiccup. Successive cycles through the home pages would often feel smoother -- it seems that the device must temporarily cache some of the rendered data for a while. However, when it's of memory and needs to render again, the stuttering returns.
Also, try opening an app. By default, it plays that animation that looks like a window maximizing from a taskbar. That animation was always very choppy for me. Again, it looked like it was missing frames. Using Nova Launcher, I've switched to the Ice Cream Sandwich-style animation (sort of looks like a tube TV turning on), and it feels way more responsive and instantaneous to me.
Again, none of these changes are actually speeding up the device. It's just lowering animation times so that things feel faster.
Fresh owner of Pro Tab 10.1 T520 here :fingers-crossed:
i'm also kinda disappointed, i've rooted, changed kernel for better performance ditch the Samsung bloadware but still kinda lagy
I'm really considering to replace it with Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) i need Snapdragon power
I already had a 8.4 and bought a 10.1 because they are selling them so cheap. After disabling all the bloatware, I think that the speed is just fine, no lags, stutters or whatever. Make sure you really disable everything. To me it's not a big difference in speed with the 8.4.
Hello everyone,
I'm waiting to receive my SM-T520 10.1, replacing a Galaxy Note 10.1 (GT-N8010) broken.
I just tested these settings on my Note2 (GT-N7100). Antutu gives me before your adjustment in economic mode: 17941 And after with your settings. 18476, a real gain.
@ New tricks.
My SM-T525 runs fantastic with Cyanogenmod 11!
I've been hoping to get rid of Magazine UX and the rest of the bloat since I first fired up the device!
Hey guys,
i am about to get a 10.1 and i was wondering if i can use the multi-tasking feature (2 screens on the display) with Nova or Apex launcher or is it only for TouchWiz?
Best regards
I use it with Apex Launcher just fine.
Works fine with Nova too.
I tried these settings, along with cybertronics v5 kernel and graveds rom. I am not disappoint! Very impressive responsiveness and feels ridiculously smooth. Everyone should do this. Thanks!

I am about to get delivery of a 12.2 Tab Pro. Really excited at having all that real estate to play with. I travel a lot for work and can't wait to be able to watch movies on that monster screen. Anyone else here have one of these beasts?
BTW upgrading from a Asus Prime that served well and will now be handed down to my kid
