Does anyone know how to the N10 as a secondary monitor?
(1) I want to edit documents on my laptop and view the output on N10
(2) I do NOT need an extended desktop (i.e. no need to drag objects back and forth between the two screens)
(3) My laptop runs on ubuntu 12.04, so I can't use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.idisplay.virtualscreen&feature=search_result
(4) A little google turns up suggestions that involve running a vnc viewer for android and setting up a vnc server on the laptop, but I can't find any details on how to do this.
Your help and suggestions are most welcome!

I think you could use Xdmx on your Ubuntu and install X Server on your tablet.
There are a few other X servers for Android on the playstore but the others were either pay or had bad reviews. Try thus first and then if you need a better X Swrver, look around.

Dear wizards of the coding.
Everytime I see my new devices I must say every purchase action depends on how much is supported in XDA-DEVELOPERS, so keep doing it.
Not sure if this is the right category to post this but as an advance user (not developer) I was thinking that could be interesting to develop an application to extend your current screen with Galaxy tab screen.
As I'm not an expert, I'm not sure if current USB bandwith will support it, but I ask to the experts to check if they see will benefit the community.
Another topic I've experienced is about bluetooth. I use to use a bluetooth earphone Sony Ericsson MW600 with OLED display. There are some devices where I can see son title or call ID name from my mobile phone. That doesn't happen with my SGT.
Sorry for the extended email and look forward to seeing these developments or threads.
Regards to all!!!

Not quite sure exactly what you mean, but if you mean using your Tab's screen as a second (or third) monitor for your desktop machine, you could do that right now on Macs - run ScreenRecycler on your desktop, a VNC client on your Tab and job done. The virtual second monitor of ScreenRecycler is shown in the VNC client on your tab.
I don't do Windows but a quick Google seems to suggest ZoneScreen does something similar.
The promlem with vnc is its slow. It moght be possible to do it over usb since it is way faster than bluetooth

Your solution is fine but I don't think VNC will be as fast. I was thinking on same way windows/mac/linux extend their screens using dedicated video ports/hardware but in that case using all potential USB bandwith for transferring such data.
It could have applications of monitor in the music industry (Imagin a DJ o composer controlling from SGT and playing other stuff on main screen), things like that.
Any hint on the second topic? (bluetooth realted to songs titles or call ID names being transferred from your SGT or Android Device?
Thanks!!
There is an application in the market called androidmonitor that allowsa phone to be used either as an extra monitor or as a keyboard input. It's $9.95 and the review so far are not good plus one notes that it does not work with the galaxy tab. With 15 minute return policy, reviews need to get better to try it.

Hey there,
Just thought I would link to a Samsung Galaxy tab article that also works with the Iconia. You can then connect into the Ubuntu session with your favorite Android VNC client. Just a couple of slight differences regarding the instructions below and what works for me.
My wifi works fine inside Ubuntu. I can't comment on any other devices such as blue tooth however.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=836022
1) Type 'sh ubuntu.sh' (./ubuntu.sh is not necessary)
2) Type sh bootlinux (In the instructions it says to type just bootlinux that doesnt seem to work)
Feel free to play with the vncserver geometry as you all see fit.
Also I would recommend resizing the image file when you get a chance, as by the time you log in, there is only about 100MB free for you to use inside Ubuntu.
Having a look at the packet manager, there is a ton of programs that can be removed. The install isn't exactly optimised for a tablet. I would expect that any Linux guru's here may be able to make an alternate image that would fit in quite well with the Iconia.
Also the links to the files are dead on the first page. They are around pages 3-5
Hope people here find this of use.
Cheers!

Please search.
So work is happening to accomplish replacing the webtop with a gentoo base img.
My proposition is to create a very slim gentoo so you guys can add as you please
So im making this post to hear from you guys what you would like to see in the Gentop.
So far my idea would be very basic.
Openbox + terminal + conky
and of course a browser.
So tell me, if this was your gentop. what would be there!?
In addition to your suggested items for a "gentop", I'd like to see more file viewers that take advantage of the lapdock screen resolution, like PDF, (Open)Office docs, even EPUBs.
I would add in some sort of rdp, vnc and ssh clients.. I could really use those. Thanks for all the hard work you do

Could you guys prepare a version with synaptic and lxde? Im sure there are people interested in the fastest webtop experience possible, but have 0 skill in linux encoding. With that, we can customize as we please with easy visual reference.
About ssh clients -- it should be mentioned that there is already an "rsync" backup for android freely available in the Android market. It installs rsync and dropbear ssh clients. So with a terminal app, your webtop will have access to cli versions of rsync and ssh. Then just do a symlink from the installed apk into /system/xbin/ and presto instant ssh and rsync.
Would we still have a phone view within gentoo like we have in webtop?
If not, would the phone screen remain accessible while docked?
How would this handle incoming phone calls?
I creating this thread mainly to share my experience with VNCing with Nook, and to find out, how many people using Nook this way. Also Im especially interested in how to set up fast VNC connection on Linux.
Im using RealVNC on Windows, and Remote VNC Pro - VNC viewer for Nook. Very important feature in RealVNC is mirror driver - it gives great performance boost, and allow achieve good response times and smooth working with e-ink display. Also I tried UltraVNC and TightVNC. TightVNC also gave good latency (after several tweaks with captures per second rate), but also it was crashing every time. Under "good response times" I mean about 0.5 sec and less. As viewer app I also tried RealVNC viewer for Android, but it was unable to connect to server to server, I think its compatibility issue.
With this setup I use computer on work, and pretty glad that I find this technique. Most of time Im working with code - and e-ink perfectly fit to this purpose. I find that, with Nook my eyestrain after working day significantly decreased, and that I can more effectively concetrate on my tasks when working with e-ink. Also its good to read articles on web just as e-book.
Main goal in this - good light. I use lamp with long bulb with two long tubes ending with horseshoe-like connection. It length somthing like 1.3 of longest side of NST, and it gives good, uniform light coverage of display. The only disadvantage is that lamb "head" needs to be placed right above ebook. Probably with more powerful bulb this limitation can be eliminated.
Now Im llooking for way to setup connection on Linux (Ubuntu). I tried x11vnc - and it gives me much worse performance. Now im thinking about tweaking x11vnc, and about trying RealVNC for Linux.
So - if somebody familiar with using Nook through VNC - comment!
I've thought of using Nook's screen like that, but didn't know how.
Can you make a little "how-to"? Do use Opera on Nook Touch rooted or the vnc android app?
I was using it for a while until I figured out I needed glasses more than an eink display!!

I use AndroidVNC + x11vnc on my Gnu/Linux machine.
To make it work you have to :
- set up port forwarding on your router, on port 5900-5901.
- check your PC's IP adress.
- run x11vnc
- connect to your PC's IP using AndroidVNC
Tip :
Use NookTouchTools to set up a key for 'CAMERA' button and 'MENU'.
- Holding Menu button will force Android keyboard to show up.
- Holding Camera button and touching the screen will act as the right mouse button.

Hey so I have a couple questions and I have not been able to find these out just browsing the web so perhaps some of you guys know.
My intention is that I want to be able to ssh into my computer/school server so that I can do my programming from some where with my tablet and be able to get some graphics to display. Mainly I have some C and python code that displays a plot via matplotlib and when I ssh into my school server I use ssh -X which I assume is for X11 forwarding for graphics(I use that when connecting on my computer not android)
1. How do I enable X11 forwarding on my nexus 7?
-I have connect bot installed, and I have X11 server by some MIT dude installed as well but I have not been able to get it to display anygraphics. When I try to get my graphics to work I get this error in connect bot: "_tkinter.TclError: no display name and no $DISPLAY environment variable."
I do not want to have to a vnc, or vpn or whatever that bs is. I just want to get x11 to work
2. If I cant get X11 to work....Does anyone know if Ubuntu Touch supports X11? I read http://www.xda-developers.com/tag/cyanogenmod-10-1/ saying that Ubuntu Touch does not use X11 so does that mean it does not support it? What I mean is if I use the Ubuntu Touch terminal and do ssh -X [email protected] would my graphics display? I'd like to know before I try to install Ubuntu Touch.
I would try to install Ubuntu desktop which I'm pretty sure it would work, except that Ubuntu desktop is mad slow and not very pratical, unless someone as a kernel that optimizes it for speed / terminal use.
3. Bodhi OS for nexus 7....is it faster than the Ubuntu Desktop?
thank in advance
Same question -- any easy way to open displays from another server?
I'm glad to see I'm not alone in trying to find this. I installed VX Connectbot, which lets me log into my linux server and type commands, but I cannot figure out how to get the graphics to display locally, or to open an emacs window on my server and have it pop up on my android device. I thought there might be an app for this, but have not found one. It just doesn't seem like it should be that complicated. Any suggestions?
You need to install an X server to display X applications (whether running locally or remotely): this seems to be the most used. I believe ConnectBot supports X11 forwarding, though it may be that only some forks of it do.
