My Nexus 7 will not boot at all. I have tried:
Holding the power button for 30+ seconds
Holding the power and volume buttons (also for 30+ seconds)
Charging it for 2+ hours and repeating
When I connect it to a PC the computer will recognize a device, but it's inaccessible.
UPDATE: Windows (XP) device manager does NOT recognize it.
The Nexus crashed while I was installing an app in the Play store (other apps were updating in the background). After this I haven't been able to turn it back on.
Any ideas on what to do or what has happened?

It seems my Nexus 7 seems to be hosed.
It was running the latest android os as pushed out by google (maybe 4.2.1?) Not sure what I did, but I am in the APX mode and I cannot exit it. The screen is completely dark, and I am not sure it is working when I press the buttons.
I have held:
Power button for 60+ seconds
Power + volume up
Power + volume down
Power + volume up + volume down
If the device is plugged into my laptop, I get a beep after holding any aforementioned combination indicating that the system detects the device but it shows up in the device manager as APX with a question mark.
I have opened the back, and disconnected and reconnected the battery.
Prior to noticing it was not working, I set a torrent download using µtorrent. My initial guess was that the battery discharged, but I have been charging it now for a few hours without any resolution.
Please help! I am past the returns for Walmart, and I do not want to ship it to ASUS to have it repaired.
Bump.
This is frustrating. I have never owned an android tablet before, and I had no intentions of rooting it. Now I have no idea if I can even recover it. Other threads are saying I am hosed because nvflash does not work on the nexus 7.
Any ideas besides throwing it in the garbage?
Try letting the battery die.
Or try these tips: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1789135
I've had my nexus 7 for about 3 weeks now. Was working great until last night. I haven't altered it such as rooting or custom ROM since I bought it. Besides some apps I have installed via the play store, it can be considered very very factory stock.
Battery was low and it started the automatic shut down because the battery level hit the critical point. It shut down and then I plugged it back in and turned it back on. It was halfway through the boot up (showing the multi-colored X) and the screen went blank and I heard what could be a farting sound, then nothing.
I've tried holding down the power button for more than 30 seconds (timing it on my watch) and I've tried the power button and both volume up/down buttons in the same manner. Nothing.
I let it charge overnight on the factory charger with factory cable. No change.
I opened the back up and disconnected the battery for a few minutes then reconnected. No change.
I plugged it into my computer and it detects and I was able to install the drivers for "Asus Transformer Prime APX Interface". If I hold the power button for 10 seconds while it is connected to my PC the PC detects that the device is disconnected and then reconnected about 5 seconds later. So the device does something.
I tried using the android-sdk to communicate with the device but nothing. ADB doesn't detect the device, fastboot doesn't either.
At this point, I'm thinking the device is as hard bricked as can be but hopefully someone here can tell me otherwise. If I don't get a response within a week, I will be attempting to get a replacement - my wife bought it brand new for me from a private seller on eBay, so I don't have an actual store to return it to.
Hi guys,
I have a Nexus 7 2012 which has become almost completely unresponsive.
Possible cause:
Last thing I remember is that I had it in my pocket and when I looked at it later - it was in bootloader mode. I pressed the power button and since then I have not been able to wake it up.
The device does not charge because I cannot feel the battery to be warm after a whole night of charging. I cannot turn it on no matter how long I keep the power button presses. I have tries two minutes on the clock. I cannot enter into bootloader by pressing power and volume down, even though I keep pressing them for two minutes also on the clock.
So I removed the back cover and pulled out the battery connector. Reconnected but there has been no change in condition.
The device shows the following signs of life.
When the battery plug is pulled out I connect it to my Windows 8 PC via the USB cable and I push on the Power button for about 10 seconds, I get in the Windows Device Manager in Other Devices a new(unrecognized) device named APX. When I pull out the USB cable the I hear the windows usb disconnect sound and the device disappears.
When I connect the battery, I connect the USB to my PC. I don't push any buttons and after 15 or so seconds I get a message USB device not recognized in the USB controllers section of the Windows Device Manager. When I press and hold the Power button (or Power and volume down buttons), after 10 sec The unrecognized device is moved to the Other Devices section and again is called APX.
I cannot turn it on. I cannon boot into bootloader. I have tried almost any approached listed here an on Google (about 10 different step by step guides) and I remain in this position.
Please help me bring it back to life. Hope it's possible. What should I try. I am fairly technical and can understand most instructions.
Had same problem, the only solution found charging via dock station. My 5 years old child broke usb port trying insert cable.
I have a 2012 Nexus 7 that I recently revived from the dead (posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-7/help/2012-n7-stuck-bootloop-bricked-unlocked-t2942705) I posted that thread and actually had fixed it shortly after.
I got it up and running with andoid 5.0 and everything was great. I left it charging while downloading some updates from the Google Play store. I came back about 30 minutes later to check on it and the screen wouldn't turn on. I held the power button for 10 seconds, then 20, then 30 and even up to 60 and it didn't turn on. Tried to load into the bootloaded with Power+Down Volume for up to 60 seconds as well, but nothing.
I plug it into my computer and it recognizes that it's connected and turned on. When I hold the power button, I can hear the USB connecting or disconnecting.
I have removed the battery for about 30 minutes and plugged it back in and nothing.
Any ideas? I had JUST fixed it and now this? I just want to use it again!
Well, I have a similar problem.
Yesterday I manually updated from Android 4.4.4 to 5.0 on my Nexus 7 2012. Everything seemed okay. Until today.
Tablet acidentally lagged - screen was frozen, and I could not unlock device, or do anything. So I just tried to shut down the device (holding Power, Volume Up, and Volume Down at the same time). And since that moment, I could not turn the device on.
BUT I, however, can hear the device connecting to PC (the sound of connection). Unfortunately, I can't do anything. So it is bad.
If anyone could provide a working solution, I'd be so glad.
Thank you.
Hi everybody,
i think my Nexus 4 died yesterday Was listening to music while i was in the workshop, suddently music stopped and the display wont turn on again. Tried to restart it a couple times but nothing happend. Than put it on the charger for a while, than my computer. There, it showed the charging animation if your phone is completly shutdown and when i pushed the start button it booted up quiet normaly, but "optimised" my apps again. After unlocking the Sim card, i pushed the homebutton and it crashed again. Since than, no picture on the screen anymore. It starts up(vibration from boot) and is even recognised via usb "remove mako" but i couldn flash a stock image with the nexus toolkit, it stucks in "waiting for device".
Was running CM 12.1 from end of june.
Is there anything i can test if my LCD died, or flash a stock rom without any displayinformation?
Best regards from me and my good old Nokia E51, which is no back in Service again.
Basher
Can you get in recovery mode or anything else accessible with button combinations? What happens when you hold power and volume down and up together for a couple of seconds? Try holding them for 10 secs.
