[Q] Easy root without losing data? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there an easy way to root the N4 without losing all of my data? I've looked around the forums and it seems like the only way to root the device is to unlock the bootloader, yet this will always require a wipe of the device. Also, most (if not all) backups require root access to use anyways.
I'm not looking to install a rom or anything, I just want to root so I can connect a PS3 controller with sixaxis since the dumb OTG is confirmed not working.
I have seen this thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1420351 but it looks complicated, probably over-estimating it though.

Most of that involves only copy & paste. The only thing you have to decide yourself is save path. No critical thinking needed.
And the whole thing is actually just one line of code. you can simply do:
adb backup -apk -system -shared -all -f C:\backup.ab
Which will save everything to C:\backup.ab
Also, the author of the post recommend to back up everything from SDCard first, kinda common sense.
And you will have to unlock bootloader, thus wipe the device before you can root.

hmm if it should be that easy then I'll give it a shot. Didnt realize only one line of that code was actually used

Note that some apps won't be backed up. I've heard some people say it's paid apps. I don't know what the criteria is but it's not specific to paid apps -- Google Authenticator won't be backed up and it's not a paid app.
Just be prepared. Or better yet, take a look inside the archive to make sure you've got the apps you need. If you strip off the first 24 bytes it's just a tar archive. If you know Linux you can run dd if=<backup> of=<optional-output> bs=1 skip=24 and you'll have a tar file in <optional-output> which you can run into tar.

You can root devices without unlocking the boot loader, which in doing so wipes the phones data, but it requires finding and using an exploit to be able to push the files to the phone. Since these phones have unlockable bootloaders no one bothers to take the time to find an exploit any more and really why should they. Best way to root is just bite the bullet, unlock the boot loader and root the device with one of the many available methods. I personally like mskip's toolkit but some of the purists on here like to see people learn how to use fastboot commands instead of the doing it the easy way.

real one click root???????

Does anybody know if visionary or another one click root app is
being developed??? one that will perm root my mytouch 4g. ive been having so much trouble rooting it that i guess im just going to wait for the total one click root meathod. plus help ive looked everywhere and cant find any info on it. thanks in advance
I have no idea, but I used the video guide from unlockr.com and although it took a few more clicks than one (not many), I got it done without any major issues.
Most likely there will not be 1-click roots anymore. Protection is way too sophisticated on these newer devices. However, I rooted my replacement yesterday and it took me less then 5 min (ultimate s-off, sim-unlock, eng boot).
Good luck.

Where are you running into a problem? This is by far the easiest phone I have ever rooted. It took like 5 or 10 minutes if that.
Im looking for something similar...the problem for me is I don't have a computer to connect to. Just my phone.
Any solutions?

I used Visionary+ with root files and terminal emulator and it took less than 5 minutes for permaroot, s=off. It really is very easy.
I also started rooting way back on a G1 and remember the first time rooting took me almost a week of reading up and more than 2 hours to accomplish just the root!
Ok basically when I download the root.rar file I right click on it which creates another root file our whatever I drag it over to my sd and when I unplug from my lap top I open astro and there is the root folder or file or whatever it is so I open terminal emulator get su permission and type the first command + enter and it says something to the effect like sh file not found or in astro if I click the wpx or hboot it says they are not file. Can someone please tell me when im doing wrong with this root folder? Thanks in advance.....
You are running Visionary first and clicking temp root right??
I know that akaskriller.com has a one touch root. Dont know if its perm root or temp root. You can check out his videos on youtube and he has his own web site. Last time I checked, there was a 5 dollar donation to get access to the link on his site and it seems to work pretty well. You can email him and ask him questions and even call him. He's always willing to help. I think there's even a thread on here about him. Check it out.

Stop! Do not turn this into another one of your "I can't root" threads.
Enjoy stock phone or get an iPhone..... you obviously do not have the brains or patience to learn.
Ok thank u for ur insult I will take that with a grain if salt. I am now rooted. Apparently there was a issue with my girlfriends lap top that is I could never get the correct root filer on my sd.this is not my first root anyway but the only only were her stupid lap top acted a donkey.

Lol, yeah, dreaming.nbh, that separated the men from the noobs.
This phone is stupid easy to root, grankin put out an .sh file that does it all in terminal for you. Much easier than when I did it when root first dropped, though it still wasn't very hard then. Listen, this may sound like an insult to you though I really don't mean it as one, but if you can't get root following grankin's thread, root just isn't meant for you. Once you have root, its so easy to mess up your phone if your not paying attention to what you're doing. All you need is terminal and VISIONary.

Couldn't agree anymore.
Rooting is a process that enables you to completely FUBAR your phone. IF you cannot get the directions down to root the phone. Then you really need to second guess Rooting the phone.
As far as the root.sh file and the unroot.sh files they are stored in a .rar format. You need a special unzipper to extract those files. I bet your GF's Computer didn't have that.

I've rooted a couple G1s, and my Nexus One (ha!) but I think the problem with this one is that there are several posts detailing how to root, and they are a bit confusing (where do I start? What do I really need? Was it temp or permanent?). Maybe some cleaning up of ALL of those threads and leaving just the ONE that truly details it would be a lot better (and listing if "ultimate S=off" is truly required). So yes, it may be super easy for those of us that have done this a lot, but for a noob the thread count is entirely too high.
If you're having so much trouble rooting......DON'T ROOT. It isn't for you and you'll just end up bricking your phone then asking for help here.
Do you really need a permanent root?
Student Driver is right when he pleads for a single set of instructions - the multiple sets are confusing for those without the experience to sort out the abbreviations, other shorthand, and implicit steps.
But permanent root might not be necessary for everybody. If all you want to do is eliminate the effect of bloatware on speed and battery life, you can use Visionary (free) and Titanium Backup Pro ($5.99). Set Visionary to temp-root on every reboot, and create a list ("label") of applications you want "frozen" under "Batch" in the menu in Titanium Pro. Then the user can remove the bloatware after every re-boot by starting Titanium Pro and carrying out the batch operation of "freezing" the stored "label." [It would be nice if someone wrote an app that did all this automatically--that is, temp root + freeze unwanted apps--on reboot right after Visionary did its thing] It takes longer to get the phone back in service on a reboot when you do all this, but there's no worry about bricking the phone or about making it impossible to upgrade, because all of the apps are retained, although not in use, and these processes can be automatically undone on the next re-boot.
This may be a reasonable solution to the effects of bloatware on speed and battery life for those who don't re-boot frequently and are satisfied with the stock ROM.
all of the guides are very easy to follow. If my wife can root her phone, and she has no Android tech background I'm sure anyone can

Freezing apps after temp root with TB will persist through reboots. All work is done in /data partition which is set to rw by default. If all you want to do is remove bloat - then no, you don't need to permanently root.
PS. You might want to detach frozen apps from the market as well so they don't update and re-enable themselves.

[Q] Will this idea work?

Hello,
I apologize if I am using the wrong terminology.
My company is looking at buying around 100 nexus 10's.
Utilizing the Google Nexus 10 Toolkit that someone here was nice enough to make, I have unlocked the bootloader, rooted, etc.
I then install anttek app manager and use it to freeze all the unnecessary applications my company doesn't want. (which is pretty much everything, except Zenprise, Junos Pulse and Citrix Receiver)
Now that I have the single tablet ready to go, I use my toolbox app, and create a NANDROID backup.
Which I am them hoping I can copy the backup onto a couple different PC's and then assemblyline unlocking the bootloader, installing custom recovery and then restoring the other 99 tablets using this backup I created. Rather than having to go through and freezing all the apps on each tablet
Does this seem like it will work, or is the most efficient way? I'm having problems where I get an error that google play services failed to open upon each boot up that I'm trying to resolve. Would this be considered a ROM? Can I name it? :silly:
Yeah, it should definitely work, I'd just relock the bootloaders on the other devices.
You could also script the freezing of all the packages, I believe the command is "pm disable".
I'm not sure, but it's possible you'll wind up cloning device ID numbers with NANDROID backup.

This sounds like it could very well be possible, you may want to factory reset etc. the first device to try to smooth out the issues before using the backup on any other devices though. In a technical sense you could indeed call it a ROM because you've taken the stock firmware and slightly altered the default system so you could name and then distribute it around the company as your ROM

Thanks folks,
And it's went off without much of a hitch. I'll have to check to see if the device ID's are duplicating. Thinking of naming my ROM "Turning $600 sex machine into a $4 terminal.zip" v.0.4, now.

Easy guide to root your tablet and keep your warranty

I must write this guide because I spent yesterday 6 hours of doing all of following steps (together with 2 useless firmware flashes and other worthless stuff). Why? Because it was really complicated for someone who is not really familiar with all the names, definitions etc. I just wanted to have my tablet rooted, keep my warranty and use my external SD card without limitations. It is not easy but it is DIFFICULT to find these few steps on XDA forum in tens of topics with many information posts and garbage around.
Important thing is that you can do these steps WITHOUT loosing any data! (Which I lost yesterday because of my lacking information.)
Here we go (written without tablet around, so some things can be generalised):
I did it on Z2 Tablet 511, firmware .402 (no need to downgrade as I did at the beginning...)
1. Open up your device’s “Settings”. Now scroll to the bottom and tap “About phone” or “About tablet”. At the “About” screen, scroll to the bottom and tap on “Build number” seven times. Make sure you tap seven times. You will then see a notice that you are now a developer.
2. Now you should have Developer options in the System settings. Go there, enable USB debugging.
3. Again in Settings go to Security options and allow installations from Uknown source.
4. Download Easy Root v5 here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=53448680 (guide is there also)
5. Download Backup TA v9.11 here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2292598 (optional for backing up your system info if you will later unlock your phone, install new ROMs etc. But if you need just root, it is not necessary. But it is recommended so you can be sure that you can get your tablet to the default status when it was bought and you can make a complaint in case something else will break down.)
6. Connect your tablet to your pc normally. Just have your tablet switched on and use USB cabel. Let it install all drivers.
7. Run Easy Root v5 (install.bat) and your tablet will be rooted in few seconds
8. For TA backup run Backup-TA.bat. Follow instructions and save your TA files. It will be created in the folder from which you run the applications. It is compressed in one file. Save it somewhere and keep it!
9. Reboot
10. If you want to use external card without limitations, install SD fix https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.sdfix
For common users who want to install apps which need root and do not want to install custom ROMs or do another tricky stuff this process is enough. Enjoy your tablet now .
There can be maybe some problems with drivers. Then you can try install PC Companion which should install everything for you. http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/tools/pc-companion/
Another thing from @stress40 who had also problems rooting the tablet:
1) I used easy root tool (on windows with Android SDK installed, ADB drivers etc)
2) extract easyroot v5 onto desktop (keeping extracted files together in a folder)
3) download towelroot.apk and put in Files folder of towelroot
4) reboot phone then plug in phone and double kick install.bat (so you get the ADB message on phone) and most importantly DON'T LET YOUR*PHONE*SCREEN*TURN*OFF (mine did so was stuck at waiting for phone but as soon as I turned it on it was fine) I was rooted in a few minutes after double clicking install.bat.
Good job, beats people having 3 tabs open trying to dissect which steps they should be following and then trying to piece together the timeline of events with other people screaming "read and search"
Sorry you lost data though, have you tried out Sony's backup app that for me was embedded in "tools" folder in app drawer? I hadn't noticed it for a while.

Not a big issue for me at this time. I just had to reinstall everything but data etc. are on cloud plus I have titanium backup just it was not used . For me tablet must be ready for summer when I will be off home. Now it's ok.
And yeah, there are like 8 topics with 49 pages in 5 subforums and then try and go through it. I don't know why there was no simple guide like this before. Only updated long ago created topics in first post plus other mess around in tens of threads.
Good guide for those who want to root it; and exactly the steps I followed, so I can confirm (again) that this method works like a charm.:good:

It makes things really easy as there is no more need for searching hundreds of postings
Would it be possible, to also have an "easy guide" for noobs, explaining how to go back to a stock unrooted tablet (in case you should need to send it in for warranty reasons)?
Thanks again!

A recovery makes it easy to 'flash' kernels, roms etc that come in zip files as well as make a nandroid backup. If you see yourself doing this, then yes install a recovery system. As a whole, it doesn't hurt to have one installed.

permission denied
Hey, thanks for a great guide!
All steps went smoothly and for the most part my Tablet Z2 now appears to be rooted.
For instance MyBackup Pro, Tasker, Secure Settings, App Quarantine all work.
However, there are some apps that have issues and they complain about permission denied in /system folder.
Apps are
BusyBox (unable to install binaries),
SuperSU (I was able to install it from Play Store, but as soon as I start it it tries to update to latest version, which fails)
AdAway (fails to apply hosts file)
Any ideas?
Your /system folder is not mounted with r/w permissions.
How do I do that?
I tried this app: Mount /system (rw / ro)
But it did not help
Is the only solution to install a custom recovery? Would be nice to avoid a full wipe if possible.

Your device is not properly rooted.
Please re-root.
All other attemps only lead to problems.
Perhaps you try the XZDualRecovery (rooting is included in the installation procedure), worked like a charm here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2794175
Ok, so you are saying that the method mentioned in the first post in this thread is not the proper way to do it?
The thread you are referring to, the method mentioned there will result in a full wipe, if I understand it correctly?

I suggest that the author of this thread should add to the description that full rooting will not be possible for the 314 firmware version.

Unlocking your boot loader is only needed off you're going to flash non-stock roms like CM or kernels that require it. If you only need root, there's no need to unlock your bootloader.

[Q] Pop/redirect adds all the time

I've done some searching and haven't found a clear answer other than a factory reset (trying to avoid).
Each time I unlock my phone, or use an app, or open chrome, I get redirected to the play store for an app...not always the same app. Sometimes Uber, some jewel game, whatever.
I've uninstalled every app that I've installed in the last 2 months (adds only started about a week ago).
I've scanned for virus with Clean Master Antivirus (been using it for a long time). I've installed two different Air Push detectors, neither found anything abnormal (twitter, weather app, etc) normal apps.
I installed Addons Detector and it found nothing.
Through some searching I came across someone saying that some apps will install a folder in the root of Chrome that you need to delete in order to stop the pop ups. Problem is, you can't root a Turbo! So I can't even view the folder no less, delete the folder if it exists.
Suggestions? Am I wrong is there a way to access systems files and possibly delete something if it exists?
Well, there is a method to root the turbo which you can find in this forum. It does cost $20 though, and does require flashing a custom image, but it may be something to consider if you can't find any other way.

The current method for rooting the Droid Turbo is Mofo Root. Is is safe, there is no way you can hard brick the Droid Turbo with this root method. What it does is flash a pre-rooted system image. Please note that there is still write protection so any apps/mods that require writing to system will not work. Mods have to be cooked into the image by hand.

A little off topic but would this root mean apps like FoxFi would again be able to create a wifi hotspot? Or is that blocked because it can't write to systems files? (it makes spending $20 on root well worth it)

"adb backup -noapps" (THen renamed the backup)
"adb backup -apk -all"
I restored both backups.
That was the only way to get some app data.
I've never tried the USB thing.
I usually have root so it's never an issue.
I don't have root on this phone and the only thing I really miss about not having root is add blocking.
I did find an add blocker that uses an on device VPN and it behaves sort of like a firewall.

I'm interested to know if this method works, I have always been TitaniumBackup user and this phone hasn't got a root yet.

Root (with Magisk) may be possible using the adb method, while not having a custom recovery. I haven't tried it, as I don't have the phone yet. I saw someone else post this link in another thread, but I can't find it now.
It's definitely not a "one click" solution or anything, so definitely read the instructions if you go this route. Whether or not it works on the Essential, I'm not sure. But it's the only possibility so far.

I don't care about root: I'm just asking about initial setup
