Galaxy Note 2 - Liquid Pixels - Galaxy Note II General

Pretty neat video~
Samsung and the Galaxy Note II introduce Liquid Pixels. A short film documenting a piece of interactive water art, controlled solely using the Galaxy Note II and its S Pen technology. The concept was created by Daniel Kupfer, and took 10 days to create and used over 3,000 connections, which were all fitted individually.

I expected something cheesy when I clicked that link, but that was pretty neat! Things like this need to reach the masses, they should set these up in big shopping malls all over the world and let people write and draw things.
Preferrably they should set these things up right outside some stores that sell Apple devices. :good:

Such awesome video. If only they play this on TV, imagine the increase in sale.

That's f'ing awesome

If it has a 10.1" screen no point in calling it "Note". It's against the basic motivation "all in one ultra portable" behind the "Note". I think it's just a Samsung employee mistyped.

I suspect with all the patent wars going on the "Tab" has a poor rep with distributors and retailers. Rebranding the tablet as the more successful and undamaged Note may work well for them.

As I know from the last rumors... Tab = with pen
Peter and chaosdefinesorder both have good point but I think it may not come out as well as expected for Samsung. "Note" was on the right path through becoming a real brand icon with some unique features as the name "iPhone" recently is. "Note" is probably the truly first device i-people consider changing their iPhone for. If they use name "Note" for tablets with pen I think they will lose that chance for good. I mean nobody calls iPhone as apple brand phone right? So it's better if Samsung keep "Note" as a brand name for specific highend models with s-pen and tablet-phones upto max 7". And they shall not release various different Samsung devices like 7"version and 5"3' with brand "Note" at the same time. They should release new version only once a year like iPhone does to keep Note brand name as perfection for ultraportable phablets if they wanna keep sales so good as it is now. So when people hear "Note" they will know exactly what it is and can picture it clearly instead of letting them think about it's one of Samsung phones among various different models.

I am pretty sure these will be new tablets with the digitizer pen, hence the name note. No one ever said that note should be just a phone, note name is connected to the pen not the phone.

Why would you want to limit the phone!? If you don't want to use a large device as a phone, just don't. But other's might. I just don't understand when people ask for limitations.

Just a question. At the end of the superbowl add for the note someone holds up a tablet if i remember rightly which i thought was odd. Why put a year old tab in it maybe its an easter egg lol

The Galaxy tab 7.7 seems like a perfect fit for those wishing for a bigger 'Note'. It has phone capability, so grab a BT headset and go for it.
http://www.samsung.com/global/microsite/galaxytab/7.7/index.html?type=find
For me I want the 'phone' size of a Note (I really do not feel it is large at all after a couple of months), and have a good big tablet for home use for playing games & surfing. That may have to spend a lot of time charging, or have some meaty batteries.
for me best phone/tab would be : galaxy note plus
5.3" screen
quad core cpu
1.5 gb ram
12 megapx camera
2x usb ports (for connecting hdmi adapter and other one for charging phone)
better battery
and the price of this phone i wouldnt care

My fond farewell to the Galaxy Note

I got seduced by a Galaxy S3...
I know, I am weak
I saw the younger, sleeker model and my lust got the better of me. I have enjoyed the Note and it has been a real multimedia device, but the combination of Nexus 7 and GS3 means it's time to go to pastures new.
Thanks to all on the Note forum!
aww no way Another sucker for the SGS3 !!
It is an awesome machine tho, I must admit. Good luck on your travels Maybe see you back here when the Note 2 gets released

I brought my Note just a day or so after the S3 was announced. The Note was cheaper and the S-Pen and larger screen are what I wanted more than a quad-core processor, which is quite unnecessary for my usage.
Good luck Joe.
The GS3 is a nice device. Awesome, actually, and there is no denying it is more popular with the general public.
My Note is my niche and my next leap is Note-2 which will be rocking a serious set of upgrades.
Only thing capable of seducing me into leaving my Galaxy Note is the Galaxy Note 2

Same here.
Not to mention that while I'm certainly fond of my toys, I'm not going to dump a perfectly good terminal just to get the latest one.
I got the Note because I broke my Streak.
OTOH, TIL that there actually are people that change their smartphones every six months. (removed my thoughts on that before posting )

Hope you won't regret it after 2 weeks like i did...had to buy myself another Note. Couldn't stand smaller screen. The S3 is amazing though...
When the S3 was first released I said to myself "not this time Beards. Yes you bought the original S followed by the S2 but when you bought the Note you clearly told yourself you did not need the S3".
All was well until I started receiving blogs in my Inbox..... Then came the TV ads followed by more Online hype.
I was slowly being drawn in.
That was a couple of weeks back.....
Yes, I do miss the larger screen and yes I do miss the Pen but the S3 gives back a lot more in other areas where the Note simply has not got.
I love being able to launch the camera either by pressing and holding the Samsung Lockscreen and twisting it 90 degrees to launch the camera. Or without touching the S3 by simply saying to the S3 "Wake up Galaxy", followed by "Launch Camera" then finally saying "Shoot", or "Capture", or "Cheese".... CLICK. Shot of myself and my Brother taken.
Then there's being able to carry out a screen shot simply by waving the edge of my up righted palm across the screen.
Or how about whilst browsing through my collection of photo's in the much better Gallery App I notice the shots taken have Names shown and by simply taping on that name I can email the photo directly to them from the Gallery App.
There's a lot more but going back to the Lockscreen where I started this reply I really like how Samsung have made it in keeping with WidgetLocker. Granted it's not as good but then again WidgetLocker can't show me a News Ticker scrolling at the base of the screen.
There's loads more reasons... so let me leave it with the Notification Tools at the top now has a scrolling list of items you can either select or un-select.
B.T.W...... I am fortunate.... I still have my Note but it doesn't get the full attention any longer.

I've been really really REALLY tempted to buy the S3 lately. I am getting it for $400 new unlocked. But as much as I am trying to like it over my note, I am unable to do so. Screen is the second biggest factor actually for me. First is everything you mentioned. All these features are really great but stock based. I would most definitely be installing AOSP if I were to buy the S3 so all those features would be gone. And then it would just be a Note with smaller screen and two additional processors in a different casing, wouldn't it?
And the pen.. I was so skeptical of getting the note, now I just can't leave it unless I get the note II..

Buying a Note 10.1 ?

Hey guys,
I'm thinking of buying a Note 10.1 with the Note 2 in my pocket I find it useful and fun to use, and I perfect selecting text etc with the S-Pen.
However I've got some reservations. I've looked at one 3 times (I know WTF am I doing?) and I've been resitant on buying one as all of them are running 4.0.4 and I'll be honest I found it a bit clonky, and not as rapid as the Note 2.
Now with mention of a possible GT-N8200 which is a possible successor to the N8000 is it wise to buy one? with rumors of the Nexus 10 screen, an updated spec and possible S-Pen improvements I'd hate to buy one and the N8200 pop up 2 months later. One of my reasons for such hesitations is there £379 here in the UK and haven't really dropped in price since there introduction is this because there isn't a replacement or are they just expensive,
When there is the likes of the Tab2 for £265 and the Nexus10 £319 While neither offer the S-Pen I found all in store demonstration models on 4.0.4 are quite laggy and not responsive enough with the S-Pen detection being too slow to realistically use it for drawing I'm finding it difficult to spend more when the S-Pen doesn't seem to work in a way where i'll actually use it.
Can anyone give me a unbiased opinion on how well it works, I know this is the forum for it, but I'm hoping you guys and gals will be able to tell me how it is, as in store demonstrations don't make me want to part with the cash and buying one blind without trying the 4.1.2 up date is financial suicide imho.
TIA
Luke.

so I have only had one tablet, this one and I bought it a couple days after its release. the 4.1.2 update definitely improved just about everything for me. ~10 hours per charge, another after the update, and expanded multi window. I understand your reservations about buying now and having a newer model. The display isn't good enough for some, and adequate for others look for the nexus 10 vs. note 10.1 thread, it is debated ad nauseam. perhaps is because my eyes are beginning to fail me somewhat but the screen works fine for me. keep in mind higher resolution requires more battery and cpu usage. fwiw, this note was announced Feb 2012. and took 6 more months to be released. my honest opinion, you won't see the next note 10.1 till July- August time frame. that's my gut feeling.
I find the s pen to be plenty responsive, there is a thread with art work done in the note 10.1 and I'm amazed at what people create.
Like I said I have only used this tablet and have never regretted my choice. my advice would be to peruse some of the threads reporting problems, but honestly there don't seem to be as many of those threads as opposed to some devices.
don't trust the store displays, watch some you tube videos, I always have power saving on and it never slows down.
good luck!
Please don't trust a unit in the store! When I went to worst buy to play with 1 the screen was covered in jelly lol. I love mine & could care less about retina displays. Whenn they come out with the note 10.1 2 I will buy it but until then I'm happy with my purchase. There will always something else newer coming out when you buy a tablet. Hell I bought the galaxy note 2 & now they already talking about the galaxy note 3

Thank you for taking the time to give me an idea what the Note is like.
I will go get one based on this new information, I really wish stores would update the devices they sell as Jellybean seems to have transformed the Note by what I can see, meanwhile the general public see them and obviously prefer the iPad, is it any wonder when some of the Android devices are running so badly.
Even on ICS I was impressed at what this baby could do compared to my old transformer prime. Jellybean has turned this baby into a multitasking beast! Thank god I didn't get the Microsoft surface. Lastly the speakers on the front of the tablet is something I've been hoping a company would do forever. There's nothing worse than having to cup your hands at the back of your tablet to get the sound to fire in your direction

I love my 10.1. I did however buy a different stylus (the Wacom Bamboo feel) because writing with the original stylus can be a little awkward due to its size and shape (for me, anyway). But for school, it's been a great alternative to carrying around multiple notebooks, and I can use my Note II hotspot to easily connect to the internet when not near a router.
I think the note 10 is the most underrated tab around, I had the original n7000 and this is considerably quicker, I even like the touch wiz implementation (mostly) on it, something I never thought I'd say...
It also made me realise I didnt really need a phone with an spen, as I used this one 100x more than the note one.
Use it for drawing all the time would like a higher res screen though.
They have been reduced btw, argos were selling them cheaper, and Samsung were doing a rebate on top of that for uk purchases.
Check old hotukdeals.com topics for those.
Not sure when I'm down in London next, other wise I'd say you're welcome to try mine out,

Samsung Galaxy S4 Unpack Event for all who Missed it

Samsung Galaxy s4 Official Page CLICK HERE
ARE THESE FEATURE WORTH BUYING OR JUST SAMSUNG GIMMICKS WHICH WE CAN GET SOME TIME LATER ON NOTE 2 ?WHAT DO YOU ALL THINK ABOUT IT ?
Air Gestures: Refers to hand movements made above the phone's display, without coming into contact with the display, that controls the phone. Common gestures include waving your hand over the display to skip a track or waving left and right to switch between open web pages in the browser. These gestures only work with specific Samsung apps.
Air View: Like the stylus on the Galaxy Note 2, you can hover over the display with your finger to view information about certain pieces of content. For example, hovering your finger over an email shows you a longer preview without opening the message; hovering your finger over a date on the calendar shows you a quick view of what to expect on that day.
Drama Shot: Camera feature that shoots 12 photos at once and shows you a time-lapse of all the action in those photos combined into one picture.
Dual Camera: Activates both the rear camera and the front camera, so that the photographer can superimpose himself or herself into the subject of the photo. Samsung gave as an example someone watching football superimposing himself or herself into the game.
Dual Video Call: While video-chatting with someone, you can show them both your face and the view from your rear camera while you chat.
Group Play: Allows multiple Galaxy S4 owners in close proximity to join a private network in which they can, among other things, play a game.
S Health: New app that acts as a fitness tracker and food diary. The Galaxy S4 has a built-in pedometer to count your steps, and you can take photos of your meals each day to keep count of your calories and eating habits. Samsung will also sell a fitness bracelet, a digital scale and fitness belt to measure blood pressure, pulse, glucose levels and weight for those interested.
S Translator: An app in which you can input any of 10 languages and receive a translation, either spoken or in text. Also works to translate text on your email, text messages and a few other Samsung apps.
S Voice Drive: New hands-free function for drivers that allows the driver to operate the phone with his or her voice.
Samsung Adapt Display: The Galaxy S4 "learns" what you are viewing and adjusts the display's brightness accordingly. If the phone senses you are reading an article, for example, it will illuminate from a more muted brightness.
Samsung Adapt Sound: Similar to Adapt Display, your audio can adapt to the content you're listening to (video, music, etc.) and optimize itself to that content.
Samsung Optical Reader: Camera feature that can snap a photo of a business card and import that information into a new contact in your phonebook. Was not working as of demo time, but Samsung reps assured me it would be fixed by the time it shipped to consumers.
Samsung Smart Pause: When watching a video, the front camera can sense when your eyes move away from the screen and pause the video automatically if you aren't looking.
Samsung Smart Scroll: When you are reading an email or article on the web, you can scroll up and down by tilting the device up and down rather than swiping with your finger.
Samsung WatchON: A built-in IR sensor lets you control your television set with your smartphone. Comes with a standard remote and a program guide depending on your cable provider. Can also control certain cable boxes and DVD players.
Share Music: When linked with Group Play, multiple Galaxy S4s can work as surround sound speakers, all playing the same song at once.
Sound & Shot: Allows you to record up to nine seconds of audio at the time of taking each photo.
Story Album: Templates that allow you to create a digital photo journal or scrapbook from a certain event. You can also then order and print out that story album for a fee.
Omg this is exciting I am buying one for sure is there any image of the actual device ??

Agreed, the actual hardware of the s4 isn't that Much better than the Note 2. For my uses the Note 2 is already fast as **** and with plenty 0t battery life. It strikes me that most of the desirable functions of the s4 are software based, and even then I don't think they are exciting enough to make me want to give up the s-pen. It's just too damn handy to be able to use your phone just like a pen & notepad.

Wait, i'm not so expert, but i read about the Octa that works like two separeted Quad. So the point is that S4 is not 2x much powerful, but only for the Ghz of his best Quad... Maybe I'm wrong, but I suppose that will be no problem for the feature that are not requesting the IR sensor or the umidity sensor or something similar.
This air gesture is a pretty old feature which I was using on my old Nokia, it was a 3rd party application that used the front camera to detect the motion of your hands over the screen and swipe photos or pages. Nothing new and certainly not a samsung innovation. Really disappointed as I find it too hyped up.

Btw... Am I the only one who is disappointet by the lack of HDR video?
patience guys......most of the software features on s4 are going to come to the note2..(as confirmed by the top guns at samsung)....but need to wait for the updates..4.2.2
At the first impulse, I wouldn't mind selling my Note 2 and getting an S4, mostly because I think I wouldn't miss the extra screen size (0.5" now) and I would like the decrease in chassis size/weight. Also I'd really like to have an IR emitter to be able to control the TV and other devices.
The other features are mostly software, not a big step up from what I have in the N2.
However, I think I would miss the SPen - I got really used to it and don't consider it a useless gadget anymore. It is great. Extra precision compared to any fingers and a screen that is always clean and shiny.
Plus I finally stopped thinking about battery and plugging in and charging. With the S2 I got an extended huge 2700mAh battery and even that could not compare to the Note2's battery. I now use the device fully from when I get up at 0730 till 1am and when I go to sleep it is usually still around 55% battery. I don't want to go back to a puny battery...
Note 3 will have same spec like S4 with more big screen, battery n S pen..thats for sure if following its history..

Flagship Phones from Galaxy series (S 3, Note 2) to get new software features
In an interview with PC Mag, Samsung VP of Portfolio Planning, Nick DiCarlo revealed that most of software features found on the Galaxy S4 will make their way to the Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note 2 via firmware updates.
Features like the S Translator, S Health, the new S Voice Drive and basically any new software that you can find in Samsung’s Galaxy S4 and isn’t dependent on the new hardware and sensors should be available to the rest of the company’s high-end devices soon.
Whoa this just blasts iphone 5 away. It looks like apple will have to keep up with their 5s.

The s4 would be good for those who have note1 and s3 below (or made the mistake of buying an iPhone 5).
The more i look at it i think it's a Note 2 mini on steroids.

I love my note 2 but I'm going to change my wife s3 to s4 which looks better in my opinion. I'll wait for note 3. I hope that size will stay pretty same just screen will be stretched like3 on s4 form 5.5 to max 6!

[OFF-TOPIC] Other Device and Upgrading Phone Discussion

I've spoken with one of the Moderators and he's given this thread the thumb's up.
Please use this thread to discuss all other devices and comparisons. That way we can avoid a half dozen threads that are all duplicates.
Thank you.
I'd generally agree - but what I hate though, is it would be all over the place - say S4 vs Note 2 or HTC One vs Note 2 for instance. Now if I want to look it up, searching thread is quite tedious. What do we have to discuss in general section anyways, except mainly upgrades and comparisons?
My 2c of course.
Just my opinion, but the search function actually works better on a single thread than across all forums. Half the people that create these duplicate "GN3" threads don't bother looking at what other threads have been created. Same for the folks that create a new thread every time Sammobile has a bowel movement.
Example, there are 5 threads on the front page that would all qualify for this thread.
There shouldn't be even a question about what phone is better than the other. Do research or go to your local handy shop and play with them.
Plus I think everyone has their needs for a device. That's why Samsung sells the most phones world wide. They make such a variety we all get the handy for our needs.

An offer came for me from Galaxy S4. The Note 2 will be upgraded to Android 4.3 but not compatible with Open ES3.0? This is the question for games... the S4 in this offer is $ 1,000 less than the normal price. I like the big screen of Note 2 and SPEN. I want opinions for it...

What says that it won't be compatible? Also, the Note 3 isn't finalized until someone puts up a display unit. The rumor mill is being given too much credit and they're just guessing like the rest of us

Iphone,Ipad, S2 S3, S4(octa) etc..etc and another generation of, 2011 2012 not compatible with ES3.0.
Open GL ES 3.0
Android 4.3 introduces support for Khronos OpenGL ES 3.0 but requires special hardware to run. Nexus 4, Nexus 7 (2013) and Nexus 10 have this capability, but not all devices have it. Open GL ES 3.0 offers new texture formats, texture compression ETC2, the latest shading language, geometry instancing, GPU accelerated culling techniques, multiple render targets, and others, providing the foundation for higher quality graphics.

Let me continue from this. If this is true then it means that note 3 will be able to play 4k videos from other sources as well?

This is really annoying, I miss the old format of having separate threads.. Now it's all clamped up. Thank you very much, apallohadas
Is this the front of the Galaxy Note 3?

Only downside of such a thin bezel would be accidental screen touches.
But I would rather have the occasional poke than a phone too massive to fit in any pocket
Don't worry I am sure CrApple will sue Samsung over the ultra thin bezel and anything they did to prevent accidental screen interaction.
Wow... general section pretty much died with all the locked threads. A sub-section with comparison threads would be much more useful. Having only one thread is such a turn-off and doesn't make you want to discuss phones (in a phone forum).
So exactly what was being 'discussed' that can't still be discussed?
Do tell, because I'm not the only person that got tired of the "Wahwah 4.2 update when wahwah" and "GN3???" threads being created and bumped with little to no content other than a link to Sammobile.
Sorry OP... not gonna waste my time stating the obvious since you're already convinced you're right.
I hope this thread will die a quick death and that moderators quickly will discover their mistake and let people discuss new devices in a more freely matter as current devices are getting older.
Feel free to post in those other forums once they get created.
Apparently more people disagree with your need for a new thread covering the same info over, and over, and over...

Well, might as well get the party started:
Although I love my note 3, I'm always interested in something better:
I'm pretty happy with my Note 2, so I'm not particularly interested in performance related "MORES" i.e. more CPU, more memory, faster GPU.
More screen/more battery is always welcome. my pockets can't take too much more vertical length though. (I wish phones focused on shrining vertical bezel rather than horizontal).
Screen that's brighter in sunlight.
I really don't use my stylus all that much. I do use it sometimes, but I could easily justify losing it for more screen/battery or something.
I don't see many contenders -
Experia Z immediately lost my interest with no external flash - I use that flashlight a lot!
I'll probably hold off buying a note 3 until I hear what the HTC one has to offer though. No rush this time. Note 1 -> 2 was a near no brainer.
