[Q] how to open the back cover - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello
I need to open the back cover of the device to cover the camera.
Has anyone already done it? Is there a video to this?

Not a video mate, but photos etc: http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Nexus+4+Teardown/11781/2

Why do you need to cover the camera?

Seems like tape. Or maybe even a sharpie would do the trick... A sharpie would be permanent until you rubbed it off with some rubbing alcohol.

A lot of government buildings don't permit camera phones in the workplace. Same with a lot of private defense or research firms. OP probably isn't allowed to have a camera in his workplace, but loves the phone. A few years ago–to fill this small but certain niche–RIM made BlackBerry phones without cameras that were otherwise identical to their camera phone counterparts.
Tbh, the camera sucks. White balance compensation is worse than it is on my original Galaxy S. Pixels don't really mean that much when the picture is poor quality. I can't imagine how bad the camera is on Galaxy Nexus phones if the 4 is considered to have significantly improved optics.

I find the picture quality to be better than my S2 international. But I'm no optic guru.

Actually, I noticed that outdoor photos are acceptable. At night, with the standard lighting you'd expect from any venue or abode, the white balance is terribly far off.

Is it possible to turn off the camera by software?
I mean when I click the icon of the camera, the camera will not work at all.

Root. And then use Titanium to freeze or un install unwanted stuff.

If i do the root and freez or uninstall the camera the other application that use with the camera still can work with the camera ?

No Apps that relay on a camera app will work, but apps with their own camera app (like PicsArt) propably will.

Save yourself the trouble and duct tape the camera hole!
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app

I just removed the back cover to play around. Really pretty easy.
1. Remove the SIM card tray, set it aside
2. Remove the two Torx (size 5) screws on the bottom of the phone.
3. Use a prying tool around the phone to pop the back cover straight off (I used a guitar pick and a small flathead screwdriver)
When you remove the back panel, it would be quite easy to put a little piece of paper to cover the camera.
However, even with the back camera covered, the front camera could still be used to take pictures... and removing/covering the front-facing camera is a lot more involving tear down process. I think a software mod would be your best bet.

Here is a great youtube on disassembly and reassembly of the Nexus4.

[Q] could someone post a pic taken with the camera?

i know a camera app is not natively installed,
but can anyone of you lucky folk to be playing with your nexus take a reasonable light level typical picture so i and others can get an idea of the image quality?
be much appreciated.
cheers.
p.s i'm thinking of bodging up a little mirror attachment to 'convert' the camera to (at least) 'upwards facing' or in other words, if the tab is held flat, forward facing...
i like dodgy things like that...
Arstechnica has some pictures taken during their review. Also they take them from both within Skype, and using a Camera App built for the N7 on the market. Huge difference, but its still a low end camera.
Here's a pic in my house with only the 4 kitchen lights on. http://www.imgur.com/u06De.jpeg
cheers, i guess its 'ok' for its purpose.
I got used to my ipod 4th gen camera for the odd snap when out and about, it seems it should do that job ok, and sure app thats aren't compatible will get an update to optionally use it. kind of kills 'augmented reality' though doesn't it? was the new big thing, and now, uh, nah sorry google says no.
worse cam is about the only loss of selling my 'pod i think, but will probably upgrade my phone package which should have a reasonable cam as they do these days.
cheers.

amusing contrast in the two pics there! -
i'm imagining you winning the pink mac girl over with your nice gadgets & N7 in the cafe or wherever then taking her back to... uh flash-beezy's room.
"oh... "
but maybe she'll won't care by then. my room is also a tip but my gf is past noticing, worn down.
anyway with a bit of natural light the pic isn't too bad, indoor is as expected, but for snaps to msg to folk or make note of things, seems ok.
thanks - keep the 'what N7 owners take pictures of' coming...

Lol. Haven't been able to put my Nexus down
Plus my Fiancé is suppose to clean her crap from in front of my TV LOL
just to mention, i see that instagram has updated their app to be nexus7 camera compatible, as it wasn't before apparantly.
so you can make those dodgy pics more presentable.
in other news, initial tests of my 'angled mirror attachment' idea seem ok using ipod as a tester. just need a little mirror that is less scratched than the one i've got at the moment.
i think being able to have a 'forward facing' (when tablet held flat) cam meaning you can visually frame things up would be handy for alot of folk.

Bad camera

I noticed that my camera quality is really bad. If you look close to that picture, there is much noise and all the borders are blurred. Even if I look at the spot I focused. The colors also are quite bad... My friends phone make better pictures, we compared them in the same situation.
A sample picture: http://db.tt/Ea3BQKwq
Can I do anything to make Google fix my camera or to get them do a full RMA?
I can't live with such a poor quality

There is nothing wrong with your phone's camera. However, poor lighting conditions and a shaky hand may have something to do with it ;P

All nexus 4 cameras use the same Sony sensor. RMA won't do you any good, as you can see Google's imaging software is garbage when compared to skinned uis like Samsung or even iOS...

I remember I read something about a better camera on all rev11 devices compared to the rev10 devices. Better satuation, less washed out colors etc. So I tried my friends rev11 n4 and the colors are better, the borders aren't blurred/noisy.

[Q] nexus 4 camera

We all know that N4 has a very bad camera..specially in low light photos..photos have very much dots..They seems good on mobile but when zoomed even a little its pathetic.
Was anyone able to find out what the issue is..? is it software or hardware..?
If its software related than is there any solution..?

Low light noise, no tap to snap picture, horrendous flash photos.
It's just not as good as the Galaxy S2+ I was going to sell.
The camera is the biggest disappointment for me as a one week N4 owner. I'm seriously considering selling the phone.
I tried the Moto X apk, which seemed to be a little better on the noise front, but I can't live with that aspect ratio. "Focal" was even worse than the stock camera.

No We are just expecting a decent camera..coz i think its a make or break feature for a smartphone..accept it or not..camera is not good enough on N4. And please i was just asking a question, its not about what i expect.
Just FYI i have a DHD and its camera is great..even in low light

I don't in any way think the N4 has a terrible camera. The pictures of takes for me at least are clear and sharp.. Way better than my S2 and honestly look just as good as my brothers Optimus g and NY wife's Note 2..
Not sure what your talking about..

Yea, I concur. I'm able to take great pictures with this phone. I'm not sure what the issue is. I mean I did come from the Evo 4G to this though, that phone had so many camera issues so I guess anything is better.
After reading around the subject, the only thing I've that gives me any hope is someone suggested using Snap Camera HDR app and fixing the ISO at 100. I'll be giving it a try in the hope of reducing noise in the pictures my N4 makes. Ta-ta, PmT
I am not expecting a 5DmkIII quality but I was expecting the camera to be as good as the one on my Galaxy S2 Plus (also 8MP).
My camera works great for a phone.

you dont have to tap the screen. long press the shoot button until its focused, then release. or in 4.3, you can hold down the down volume button then releae when focused.
btw some recent photos..
This phone sold for $200, of you want better camera you're going to have to shell out more money for other phones with better camera.
If you want less noise in low light shoot with iso 100. Or get n HTC One.

Blurry pictures

Anyone else noticing that when not in PERFECT lighting conditions pictures are blurry..
Yes - it's been driving me crazy... most of the time the pictures come out blurry. I've been messing around with different modes/settings and I cannot get a consistent clear picture. Pretty frustrating!

Yes, absolutely notice this. Brought it up in the other thread but no one thought it was worth checking. Have done tons of side by sides with Note 2 and honestly this camera is very touchy. Has a tiny field and it's often hard to see where that is in the pics. I really hope the camera gets a software update and it's not hardware because the camera has been the only thing I'm on the fence about. When you zoom in, even in good light, things in the taken pic get blurry and almost look like they have an effect.

I tried turning mine off but seems the same.
Pictures in bright env. seem fine but indoors just flat out sucks.
I can hold my hand a little away from the camera a bit and it won't focus on it. If I tap to make it focus it sometimes turns green like it did but my hand is still blurry.
I hope they push a SW fix soon.
I don't understand it. How can you not catch some of this before release? Camera is a basic function of a smart phone...

I really hope a update comes out to fix all this and it's not just poor HW :/
It's just sad that these basic obvious issues make it out the door.
They should have caught these things and I understand shipments went already but we should have had updates just waiting for us to fix em.
Oh well, time shall tell I guess. Sprint won't help I'm sure given how slow they are to push updates too...
Anyone mess with any video? How's that, clear, blurry mixture mess? lol
That prob has ability to be better or worse I guess. You've got 1080P mode and 4K HD, which when enabled seems to kill off a number of features.
I've not messed with it yet but just wondering.

I simply dont get very good pictures in anything that isn't natural full daylight. Not necessarily blurry, just extremely grainy. But thats rather expected with most smartphones.

Hi Again
I caved in an bought another g2 to see if my blurred pictures were a hardware fault or just due to a crappy g2 camera, looks like my new g2 takes pictures of simular quality to my s4
Sorry to say but sounds like your g2 camera module needs replacing or the phone itself.
