[Q] Need suggestions - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I've looked at some threads here but I am still not sure what to do about ROM/Kernel. I currently flashed ParanoidAndroid 2.99 beta3 on my N7 and it is fantastic. I am pretty sure I am running the stock kernel right now so do I need to flash a better kernel? I'm looking for something that can conserve battery life. I'm losing like 3% per 20 minutes streaming.

ROM & Kernel with the best battery life?

Hi, so far the only rom I have used is CM6, and the battery life is just absolutely terrible. Maybe its just my nexus, maybe not, point is I want a new ROM.
A ROM that you guys have tried and decided to stick to.
Battery life is VERY important to me.
Try IntersectRaven's CFS kernel, best I have found for CM
For ROM try Enomther, battery life pretty good on that one

I had been using CM 6 for a while and just recently switched over to Enomether's latest TheOfficial ROM. The battery life is now DRAMATICALLY better. Just looking over the Juice Plotter graphs shows that the standby time overnight is almost flat. Say 3-4% drop every 3 hours or so. With CM6, the battery level is on a constant and steeper decline, even when not in use. I didn't take any records, but my N1 on CM6 would be down to ~45-50% overnight if I forget to plug in the charger (from full). I heard that SetCpu will help, but I don't think it worked out for me.
Enomether has its own CPU Governor and while it doesn't offer as many features as SetCPU - the ROM's default settings work well right out of the box - no tweaking is needed really for the CPU governor.
I too was having really poor battery life with CM6, losing about 50% within 8 hours after charge, without even using the phone much! I'm trying out other roms right now just for fun. I'm using Evil's Nxsense but with the kernal posted by Autinhyeu (post # 8541 in that thread). So far seems to be holding battery extremely well. About 5 hours since charge and about 90% battery.
LeoFroYo Rom is pretty good with battery
try the leofroyo rom latest beta. i get great battery in standby with the stock kernal that it comes with. 2.5 hrs per 1% battery. typically in a day making calls and using the internet, i lose about 30%-25% battery. not too bad.

2.0.1 beta 3 is the latest version that i'm using

cm sucks when it comes to battery life in my experience. i tried the 6.0 version when it came out (first stable release) and battery life was horrible.
5 hours since charge? only standby or some usage?

That was mostly standby with setcpu profile setting cpu to minimum when the screen was off. But even with those same settings on CM6 my battery would be about 70% after the same amount of time.
I just reflashed cm6 but with that other kernal so I'll see how well it works today.
MIUI has the best battery life of any ROM I've used on my N1.. idle drain of about .5% / hour when using pershoot's kernels from droidbasement.
I'm using shadow rom2.1 stripped down and I get about 16 to 18 hours usage.

I'm using CM6 and my battery life is great. I got rid of my Seidio extended battery to get an Otterbox case and the stock battery on CM6 is awesome.
My phone has been off the charger since before 1pm and now at midnight its on 46% and thats with heavy use of Angry Birds, text, emails and web browsing !
My battery life is also acceptable on cm6. Not amazing but acceptable. Then again I put mine in airplane mode overnight and get about a 4% drain, which I kind assume might be something to do with my Widgets.
Okay, so I decided to try one of these two ROMs:
Enomther
LeoFroYo
not sure which one yet, and not sure what kernel to use with the ROM I choose.
I hate switching ROMs cuz of the wiping and restoring and all that crap.

Rodrigo's miui is the best I've seen.
Easily lasts the whole day
do you guys know if the leofroyo rom will work with slcd nexus w/ updated HBOOT??
i posted in the leofroyo rom thread, but no replies yet. itching to give it a shot.
cm6 is eating battery like crazy!
rods miui has amazing battery life It lasted two days for me on release 1.3 I think he is on 1.5 now

[Q] best rom and kernal for battery life

i am sure there is a thread on here already for this but i can't seem to find it i am looking for the best kernal and rom combo with the ultimate battery life with also o.c. supportive as well i am wondering what is it that i can do or flash i am currently running g.b. stock rom with a cynobenmod kernal i am wondering what everyone else best experience is also batteries ext. does anyone have a great cheap battery that extended there life on the evo i use tethering about 5 hours a day and i really need that to work to last all day and making 6-7 phone calls thorugh out that day just so you know i am using a evo 4g
if you don't mind AOSP-based ROMs, try Deck's ROM ([6-21-11][ROM] gingerbread-evo-deck [1.2][2.3.4 Stable] - xda-developers) and then flash a Tiamat kernel (I've been using the latest and its been great) ([Kernel][AOSP] Tiamat | 2.6.38.8 | 6/6/11 -xda-developers). You can also try viperboy's undervolt mod [MOD]viperMOD for AOSP Kernels - v3 beta RC2.4 |Updated 6.14.11|*App in Progress!* - xda-developers on top of the kernel...helps out with battery life. Try the -100mv first then step down gradually till your phone is stable again
I agree with cg about decks and viperboys script. I personally get better battery life and performance with savagedzen. Also try underclocking down to 691....I do and notice no slowdown.
I have been using MikG v2.15 and battery life has never been better. Also it is far more stable than the custom kernels with voltage tweakers in my experience.
+1 to what Ronnie said. I like leaving as much stock as possible. I am running MikG 2.2 and never have to worry about a charger.

I've used MikG, Synergy, KingsROM, etc. (essentially all of the GB Sense-based ROMs that were 2.1/3.0 hybrids). And yea MikG had the best battery life compared to the others but I would only get maybe 12 hours out of it. What are your settings??
I'm with the Deck's crowd here. I use Deck's with Tiamat 3.3.7 (too lazy to try the newer versions), and I don't usually hit 50% battery life till about 18-ish hours off charger with constant texting/Tweetdeck/push notifications and a few phone calls.
I am not using any special settings or tweaks. Using Google sync to access 4 email accounts, etc. Also I unchecked the Always On Mobile Data setting.
It has been 100% stable - no stalls, connectivity issues, or anything like that.
Nice thing about MikG is that it uses Sense.
Decks and the latest tiamat sbc w viper boy....2600 mah battery I'll get 40hrs

Try MIUI's newest release...not sure what it is off the top of my head. Definitely the best battery life I've ever gotten. Get a solid 15 -16 hours with medium to heavy usage. (fbook, youtube, calls, texting, web browsing, downloading).
Im with you - Im on MikG now I love the ROM but I do not even get 12 hours with a 3500 mah battery. That is on a heavy usage day on low usage days I get 18 houirs. Not horrible but not good. Was actually looking for a sense based ROM with better battery.
Cyanogenmod 7 with tiamat kernel, stable version gives me great performance and stability and GREAT battery life.
Check my sig for my setup, I am currently using my AOSP setup. I get at least a day with heavy usage, stock battery. I use Juice Defender too, it seems to work well, especially with AOSP ROMs.
Radios matter too, if you have high Android System usage or cell standby, flash some new radios.
NANDROID.

Starburst ROM + Pershoot's 1.4ghz Kernel Stats

Hello, Just thought I would post my stats using the new Starburst rom with Pershoot's Kernel. Getting great speed and the system runs very smooth but it feels like my battery is draining quite abit faster...
I have setcpu set as "OnDemand" 300mhz-1400, 256mhz when screen is off. Is this battery drain normal? Ran for 4 hours idle while working, then during break i used my tablet for about 15 min, idle another 4 hours and then after work I only got about 2 1/2 hours of use from my tablet before getting the 15% battery warning (79% to 15% in two and a half hours).
Before installing any TW rom and using Pershoot's older (non-TW) kernel with same settings I was getting atleast 4 hours after having the system idle all day while i work (10 hrs), this was with about 40%+ battery left to spare. Please take a look at my stats and feel free to give any suggestions to help me get more battery
The performance now is very good, but before TW i was getting about 150 less points in quadrant (2950ish)with the extra battery life. Also i dont let any apps run wild while idle and have gps, bluetooth, wifi turned off during working hours.
Quadrant Score, Starburst TW + Pershoot's Kernel Aug/9/2011 builds (score:3100).

Battery Stats, notice the steep drop at the end? Thats the only time I really used my tablet... about 2 1/2 hours, web surfing (14 hours 35min total on battery).

why is your screen on and awake bar completely full if you only used it for the last 2:30?
In GENERAL
Screen on time 8-10 hours
Standby time ~100-500 hours depending on whats on/apps installed.
No idea why it says the screen was on, it was not... And I had the unit on but as far as i know there isn't a sleep option so the unit was awake but not being used.
If you know of a sleep option please let me know, thanks for your reply
Yeah I'm still testing this exact rom/kernel combo and there is something up with it.
On a reboot, does the battery level go up? Does it stay up for a little while then drop back down?
Also have you done a battery calibration? If so, how?
I'm just trying to narrow down what could be causing the problem. I'm no dev by any stretch of the imagination, but for some reason I really want to find out what is causing this. It doesnt seem to affect all machines so in finding the simularities of those that are having this issue, we can squash this bug....
I was using this combo and my google music kept force closing.

it should goto sleep automatically, and if screen was off it should be indicated as off. maybe something is wrong. im currently on pershoot's kernel as well and have had some issues with battery calibration (reporting bogus stats).
i think pershoot is looking into the issues on his thread.
im using 10.1-Wifi, Touchwiz UX (OTA, GT-P7510)
It's a kernel problem. Try going back to stock or an older version of pershoots.
It'll be fixed today from what I've read.
Late last night reinstalled Starburst with its original rom, after my 10 hour work day it still has 95% battery left (after some galaxy on fire 2 during my break), hella lot better than it was yesterday.
I will wait for Pershoot's revised kernel and test it out again. And thanks again for all the devs making custom roms and kernels! Much love to ya! <3
*Stock Starburst kernel is showing my screen being off (when it is off) and my system as not awake when screen is off under battery usage in settings

From what I've read, he claims there is no problem with the kernel, the problem is with the user. We havent calibrated the battery correctly according to pershoot himself. Problem is, I cant figure out the secret to a correct calibration process....

Flash Starburst or stock rom then charge your tablet 100%, once your battery is fully charged flash Pershoot's kernel.
I have not tried this myself but from what I have read it works, right now im happy with the performance on stock Starburst kernel, quadrant is at 2300 compared to Pershoot's 3100 but its running so smooth I cannot notice the difference. Going to wait for Pershoot's reworked kernel and then flash it, I gots to have my voodoo!
Update:
Today I reset my battery, and installed Pershoot's kernel. I'm still getting battery drain, used for 5 min this morning and its down to 80% (just browsing web)... Also my clock got stuck at around 5:08am and my alarm did not work this morning until i turned my screen on. After I installed Pershoots kernel alot of apps were acting up and not running properly but after a reboot my clock and apps started working as normal.
And I have to hit/hold the power button like 5 times to turn on the unit now. Going back to original Starburst for now.

Darn. I was just about to give this a try. Oh well I'll try it anyways, nothing to lose. Just remember all the issues that may or may not be caused by the kernel is actually user error
Did anyone try the newest version of the kernel? Posted 19/aug/2011.

I'm using it now & it's a very good finish product. His last version gave me battery issues like no other. I believe he withdrew it after numerous complaints over battery issues.
Working great.
I always wipe Dalvik and Cache before flashing the new kernel.

Best battery conserving kernel for stock ICS 4.0.4

Ok - I normally don't use a kernel, but my battery life blows on ICS.
Anyone have a suggesstion for the NS4G?
I'd like to avoid overclocking, but I guess if the kernel has it, I can revert to stock with setcpu.
Thanks!
Depends on what you define as good battery life. I manage 17 hours, which is fine by my standards with my usage pattern. Some people can pull a day with normal use and I mean 24 hours on stock battery. I've stuck with Matr1x because it has what I want in a kernel. Stability, decent battery life, a variety of governors to toy with, and Voodoo sound . I'd say give it a go. There are so many out there and I've messed with a few. The life hasn't really changed between them though. It just seems Matr1x hasn't given me any issues.
For stock, thalamus provides an optimised stock kernel.
http://forum.oxygen.im/viewforum.php?id=18
Pick your poison. It doesn't have all the voodoo, bld, etc, but I get 18 hrs with about 3 hrs of screen time on it.
Trinity kernels are also excellent and their colours are spectacular. They have all the bells and whistles.
Ultimately it's up to you though. Try a few (after you've made a backup of course) and you can always go back should you encounter any issues.
Sent from my Nexus S
I also would say Matr1x, I was able to get 5 hours screen on time with 15 hours of total use yesterday, not sure if you will get the same result on stock but it should help

PA 3.99 terrible battery drain

I haven't really been using my phone cause I've gotten the Xperia tablet Z
But running PA 3.99 on my nexus 4, I'm getting really crappy battery life..
I'm walking home and using Facebook and music player and I'm losing 2% every minute or so
I've re flashed PA twice but there's no hint of any improvements
Gsam is telling me that there's a wake lock and the kernel that is draining my battery
Does anyone know how to fix this battery issue?

If you are losing 2 % every min I would say your battery is messed up.. I doubt anythig other than 3d games can drain battery like that..
yea that's what i thought too but i really don't know whats going on with my battery i'm gonna reflash to stock and see if i can get better battery life as i dont really use my phone anymore so i could care less what rom i use

With the new PA 3.99 RC2 and the newest franco kernel plus I'm getting an awesome battery performance.
I did a complete reset of my phone to stock 4.3 before I rooted and installed it to my mako because I had bad bettery performance and on screen time last month.
I charged my phone to 100% in the evening and with wifi on it loses only 1% per hour at night (without whatsapp).
The next morning I insatlled Whatsapp again and I'm still impressed!
I'm at 27% now, at 22:51!!
Yeah I honestly don't think PA is to blame here, here's a recent one of mine:
Facebook is a notorious battery drainer btw. Try installing Better Battery Stats or Wakelock Detector and have a look what's really causing the drain before starting a thread blaming a damn good ROM
