I plan to buy a Nook Simple Touch during Black Friday deal (Sear $39.9, Target $49.9), and then root it.
My primary goal is to use it as an advanced e-reader. (really hate to carry heavy IPAD for reading in subway everyday). I hope to read PDF in landscape mode, using ez-pdf reader, and zoom in/out is supported during reading.
Anyone can point out a link(s) for a rooting way proven to be stable, less chance of error, and hopefully latest. Such kind of suggestion will be lifesaver for a newbie like me.
Thank you very much for your help.
Watch for which software version is installed on your nook.
If you get a nook with glowlight, version 1.1.5, then use these instructions :

Hi guys,
I've searched both these forums and google - and if I've missed something obvious I apologise, but I was just wondering if anyone knew of a comic book reader for WM6. Ideally something that would work well on the diamond, with zoom and pan functions using touch screen or the wheel.
Yes I could just unzip a cbr file and view each image in turn, but it would be nice to have a dedicated app for this.
Bump.
I've been searching for a comic reader for a while, and everything that I find is from about 5 years ago or incompatable. I have the first 1000 issues of Questionable Content in 4 cbz's, and the only time i ever think to read it is when i'm away from my computer.
Thanks in advance!
yupe, would be great if there's one. My Nintendo DS has a homebrew cb reader but this phone is the one I carry all the time.
i've just been changing the CBR file extension to RAR, unpacking the files on my phone, and using Resco Photo Viewer to read it...that's the best solution that i have found so far
I don't know but i found this ...

Previous link is unavailable so I'm not sure if it's the same, but I found this

The best comic reader I have found. Only ever found one other but didn't like the other one. This one is pretty much perfect.

THANKS !!! YOU GUY S help people like us every time ...thankyou
I love htc for reading but pdf has always been a pain in my head, I would like to encourage with this thread to gather tips for reading in the best way.
foxit reader great software but at the moment you cannot pinch for zoom, and the little bar that appears when manually use zoom disappear in 1 second, it is not in my opinion optimized for touch mobile phones.
adobe reader LE, great software but when you want to read in the horizontal landscape mode, you have to swallow the half centimeter of the bar that do not disappear, and of course also 1 millimeter can make a big difference when you want to read for hours, in not overstrain the eyes!
the tips is really easy, and maybe a lot of people already do, just install girator and voila you will be able to read the the pdf in landscape mode, because the bar will go on the bottom of the screen and not on the right side!
so at the moment according to my experience
1) pdf= use adobe reader le with girator
2)read in dark environment= install lumos
and that's it I do not want to go further because I would lose conciseness in explaining the differences in highlighting, reading and bookmarking ebooks in a finger friendly way comparing ubook, mobi and proreader(that is hard to install on my default rom)
Cheers
4 directional pads
cancelled by the autor, sorry
Personally, I save all PDFs to text, and read with AlReader (fantastic for ebooks), just another way
I've been doing a lot of reading since I got my HD2, I reccomend Freda for the HD2 and Calibre for converting your books from pdf to epub books. Works like a charm!
+1 for freda books, a great little programme. just the thing for reading all my sci fi e books.

Hi all. I was asked by a family friend to prepare a tablet for use by a person who is confined to a hospital bed. He has limited mobility, I think only one side of his body. Additionally, he is very old, so I imagine his eyesight is poor. I have not met with him yet, so I don't know all of the details, but I'm trying to prepare myself with some knowledge about what I can do when I meet him.
So, here I am asking for suggestions. I have a plan for mounting the iconia, so I'm good there; what I need is software suggestions for programs that he can use. His interests are:
1) web browsing
2) email
3) writing
The other thing I need help with is finding programs that will make the iconia easier to use generally: larger text, brighter icons, ?
For web browsing, I think Dolphin for Pad will be best, but I'll install opera too, just to see which he likes. Anyone know if there is a browser that would be particularly easy to use? Also, I don't know what news sources will be best, but as far as I can tell, the CNN app is the best for the tablet (even though I detest CNN. The NYtimes app has tiny text and is not fun to navigate...)
For email I think the default email client will work. If he uses gmail, I'll do that, if he has more than one I'll aggregate them in the gmail client. If he's stuck to hotmail (he's old...) I'll use the regular email client unless someone has a better suggestion.
For writing I have Docs to Go full and Quickoffice Pro. I also have the Flex T9 keyboard. Anyone have better suggestions? \
Thanks all in advance! I know this is going to be a challenge: I don't think he's ever even used a tablet, so the learning curve here will be steep. If this doesn't work, we may try an iPad (gasp!) just because it's harder to **** up, but I'd prefer to stick to the android so I can provide remote support (I'm keeping my galaxy 10.1!)
You've got yourself quite a hard task ahead of you. Mostly because there are almost no accessibility functions or applications available for Android devices at all. And you say that he's physically disabled, possibly not being able to use the other side of his body... so, how's he going to hold the tablet up and use it at the same time?
I personally feel a regular laptop would be a better choice. Sure, it's heavier, but there's far far more software for accessibility uses and it can easily be used even one-handed.
you can also try the w500. windows contains a lot of disabled functions.
Thanks for the two suggestions. In my original post I omitted the part about it being mounted above his head (the post was getting pretty long). He will not have to hold it, nor could he. We have already determined that a laptop will not work. I already have the iconia, and I'd like to try to make it work. Again, thanks for the suggestions, but what I'm really looking for is software for android or settings withing android that will make this work.

Android simply was not designed with accessibility in mind.. :/
Bump. I know that some of you have some real ideas, not just naysaying. I didn't mention before that I'm not rooted but would be happy to root if there would be any advantages...
(please - no more discouraging responses. I have some ideas on how to do this, and it will probably work, I'm just looking for other ideas that maybe I hadn't considered yet).

You are sooooooo wrong.
Many Android users have disabilities that require them to interact with their Android devices in different ways. These include users who have visual, physical or age-related disabilities that prevent them from fully using or seeing a touchscreen.
Android provides an accessibility layer that helps these users navigate their Android-powered devices more easily. Android's accessibility services provide things like text-to-speech, haptic feedback, and trackball/d-pad navigation that augment the user experience.
Your application should follow the guidelines in this document to ensure that it provides a good experience for users with disabilities. Following these two basic rules will solve most access-related problems:
Make all of your user interface controls accessible with a trackball or directional controller (d-pad).
Label your ImageButton, EditText, and other input widgets using the android:contentDescription attribute.

You can use Desktop Visualizer to make the on screen icons larger
try to change the LCD dpi in build.prop. use a Bluetooth mouse as a pointer or a those ipad pens. The rest is trying to use the voice for launching the most important applications. I think it can be done and he will enjoy the tablet.
Good Luck

Can anyone confirm that this will make the screen icons larger? I don't think he's blind to the point where talkback will be useful, but I do think that larger type/icons would definitely be a positive. I have a few cheap soft-tip styluses; is there a real difference between them? I will get one of the $20 ones if that will really make it easier to use.
Also, looks like I need to root this thing. I'm comfortable with that; I have rooted more than a few gizmos in my life; anyone have a suggestion for a good ROM (or anything else root related specific to my question)?
Wtf?

Don't you love how the Internet makes everyone an instant expert?
Tried going to settings accessibility screen reader?
Android may not have a lot available yet, but accessibility is definitely in mind
Slack, first off I commend you for helping him, your a good man. For News try News 360 & World News papers. Each one you can touch zoom what your reading & the latter formats what your reading on the page. CNN,AGREE ! Don't forget a stand for him to use on his bed side roller table.
Good luck,
Bob
I forgot, Fox News just came out with an Android app. Not bad.

Hey guys, WereCatf is pretty good as far as helping people out around here. I understand how she sees the current accessibility options. They are pretty weak at this stage. For instance, if someone wanted to change their font size globally, without root and slack04's spiffy trick they would have quite a time. There are no contrast controls that I know of in the accessibility options, or anywhere else. That seems to me that it would be included for the visually impared if much thought had gone into it at all. There looks to be a huge absence of apps for the disabled. Ripe and waiting for some developer to tap into.
Maybe you fellas should consider taking a look around at some of her posts. Perhaps you might rethink the comments.
I want to use Nook simple touch for reading lecture notes. The thing is that notes contain a lot of mathematic symbols, the format i use is pdf. I tried other format and everything was messed up. When i use pdf version in normal letter size everything is ok but letters are too small for relaxing reading, so when i try to increase letter size everything is messed up (mathematics types are lost or get confused).
Does anyone know how to deal with that?? I tried some other reader apps but everything is much worse than the default reader. Unfortunatelly i can not use a lot of reader apps. It is rooted but android version does not support a lot of reader versions.
Thank you very much in advance.

WHAT TO DO WITH
___My Nook Simple Touch
I would like to create a thread to help people to make their choice about what to do with their nooks.
What mod should I choose ? why ? can i do this ? to avoid the "if only i've had installed this mod
instead of this one at the time".
Should I update my firmware (now 1.0.1) and to which version ? is there any disadvantage ?
Update to 1.2.1 , you will get a good dictionnary and there is no real reason to stay on earlier versions.
Which Mod should I get and install ? Advantages and disavantage ?
NookManager seems to be the latest and best firmware for now. (30/01/2014)
Can I update android ?
You can't, you will stay Android 2.1 forever
What app should i install ? Compatible with nook ?
Best apps for Nook simple touch (@mantion thread)
Offline wikipedia
Others ?...
Should I install a norefresh tweak, which one is the best ?
Tweaks :
AZERTY Keyboard and Language + general settingsMust have
Nook Color Tools (working on Nook Simple Touch) You can choose your keyboards settings, and under "Settings/Developpment" you can choose your language for the whole system. It also changes your keyboard to your region's one (azerty for me)
to install Nook Color Tools, use a file manager to move the .apk to system/app, then install it
Keyboards
Download the keyboard you're willing to use, with file manager move the file to system/app then install it. Then use Nook Color Tools to choose the Third Party Keyboard you wanna use. (Also possible with the twitter app from whati saw : Long press on text field/choose input method)
I wan't to get a keyboard. Which ones will work, which one are you using ?
( I'm personnaly looking for something like this but this one is bluetooth only

No one has any advice ?
- The latest firmware, with its good dictionary, is best.
- NookManager is the latest and best.
- It's Android 2.1 forever.
- Offline Wikipedia is wonderful.
- for best apps, search the website.

I'm waiting for any advice from someone who tested a "norefresh" patch. Which one is the best if there is many and is there any downside ?
I'm also waiting for any others tips you would like to share.

My opinion may be different than others because I am not a big fan of multi-use devices. I only use my Nook for reading. If you want to do something that needs "norefresh" "fast refresh" or whatever, go buy a tablet.
I have rooted my 1.2.1 Glowlight with NookManager. I have installed YouVersion Bible 2.4.1 and Orion PDF viewer. NookManager installs Button Savior. These are the only apps I really use besides the stock reader.

I agree with you my nook is to be for a restricted use. However this thread is created for any user willing to know what are their options.
In my personnal use. I'm willing to use it for reading : blogs, books, PDF, wikipedia. And maybe for writing (if i find the right keyboard and app)
So its my "knowledge device" output (reading) and input (writing)
If norefresh tweaks have no downsides, It could be better for writing (see the letters showing as fast as they are typed)
That's how i see it.

I use the free Aard Dictionary (aarddict.android.apk). See http://aarddict.org/index.html and http://f-droid.org/wiki/page/aarddict.android.
I use the NST for reading novels with CoolReader, and read bridge (card game) on pdf files with APV PDF Viewer, and Word documents with Mantano Reader. All work very well, but APV has no book-marking, and choosing the best fonts settings for the NST on CoolReader is decidedly tricky. For occasional web browsing, Opera Mobile is fine. For quick notes, I use Color Note Notepad . I also use Dropbox, Titanium Backup and Adfree.
Rooting the NST far exceeded my expectations. I uses it twice as often as I did before rooting, mainly because the stock NST will only read epubs properly.
post updated with overall language tweak for android/keyboard/nookapps (with Nook Color Tools)
