why root

ok hi im a newbe i have a htc g2 about a year old just wanted to ask what is root and why would you want to do it can it help with things like making the back speaker loulder if it can i need to do it i love this phone but the speaker sucks thanks in advance

Its like a jailbreak. To get full control of the phone. With rooting, you can try different roms, mods, overclocking, better proformance ~ reception ~ battery life, ect.

You can boost the volume of the back speaker with volume+ app (requires root), increase overall phone speed by flashing Cyanogen roms (CM7), and save battery life or speed up the phone dramatically by overclocking. Much more too that you will learn and find more useful after rooting your phone. Its worth it... trust me
ONE THING THOUGH... VERY IMPORTANT!
Do your research first. Don't just fly into it blindly. Know your risks and requirements and then follow the directions EXACTLY. It seems scary in a way but if you read carefully and follow it... you'll do fine! Good luck and hope to see you in the CM7 threads soon

Its a pain in the asre, but the best thing to do is spend as long as you can reading about the following:
ADB
Root benefits
Clockworkmod recovery
Rom manager
Bootloader/hboot
Of 5 phones I've rooted, this was the most complicated so read as much as possible.
Root itself is administrator rights to the whole file system. It is a linux term (android is based on linux). You can do a lot of damage but also, with a little knowledge, can have great control over the look and performance.
Ps. Flashing custom roms is addictive

And there isn't a "one click" method for our device, but the wiki is very thorough, and if you research a bit and follow the guide step by step, you should be happily rooted in no time.

I was in ur shoes a couple of weeks back, and I must tell you, rooting the phone is like breathing a new life into it. U will have endless possibilites to customize.
Anyways my two cents to the issue is to tell you that in other for you to root ur phone after the gingerbread update u will need to downgrade it back to froyo first, then u can then have ur pick of several rooted custom roms based on gingerbread.

Once you're on Froyo, this method (link below) is my suggestion. I used it a couple months back and it worked great... zero problems and it took all of 15 minutes. It uses gfree which is the preferred method according to the wiki... speaking of, the wiki offers a wealth of information. Bombadier linked it previously.

I've actually bricked a device for those reasons before and its never fun. Especially when its your wifes phone lol! Even us who have been in the IT field for 10 years make mistakes

For sure. The method I linked is actually a bit older and the OP doesn't appear to support it anymore (he didn't support it back when I rooted, but I read the entire thread). It worked perfectly for me and I've seen posts from users who downgraded from 2.3 and then had it success with it. I was even able to refer back to, a couple months after rooting, and flash the engineering hboot with no problems whatsoever. Too bad the guy isn't around to take credit for his guide.
Are you gonna try out the new stable CM? I kinda want to, but how can it be better than the nightlies? Stability? I feel like the nightlies are stable.

the latest stable is just build #225 so I just flash the nightly and keeping going with those. but yeah, nightlies for the past few months have been nothing but flawless

hahahhahaha! I know! I even was a cell tech for 5 years hehehehhe (i do PCs now)! I bricked many a phones in the past but they were easy to fix with the right tools. but bricking the old lady's phone is a BIG non no

The easiest way to root on froyo is by using z4 root or universal androot
You can also use the tool for the pc called superone click roo

It might be the easiest, but I've heard of many users who've experienced problems using that method. I'm not knocking it, I'm just saying the wiki is probably the safest bet.

How to Root Your SGS2:

3) Connect your device to your PC, Run UnlockRoot.exe
4) Click “Unlock Root”, Enjoy

OK then I will remove the words "easiest and symplest"
No doubt CF-Root is the best and simplest for those who already started using the Odin.

CF Root method :
1) Get into Download mode
2) Open ODIN, select the file
3) Connect phone and select start
4) Done in under 30 secs
Much easier than this "unlockroot" method...

This may not be the easiest way to get root for us.
But for somebody who doesn't know what odin is, Windows user who doesn't even know there is a download and recovery mode on their phones.
Or for someone who doesn't want to mess up with jigs and flash counters.
For them, this could be the easiest way to root and unroot their phones.
That people will find this usefull, others should shut up.

LOL.Well done mate!i mean even if you haven`t tried yet how do you know what da hell is this?do not comment and please shut up.Also i have rooted my old htc desire with similar method and it took less then 1 min without a hassle.it could be useful for someone.

I know a couple of people who used this on there galaxy S and they've not had any problems.

People can root their device using any method they want.
When you tell people who have helped many many users unbrick their device to shut up Im guessing you are saying leave it to you to help from now on since you know more than them.

How to root my Nexus 4?

I got my Nexus 4 the other day, and now I want to root it. I was browsing through the forum, but it's all clutter and I don't understand anything (first time using Android). I found some threads, but they were updated a long time ago so maybe they're outdated.
Basically, I want to root my Nexus 4 but keep it stock. I want to do some screen calibration and stuff. I'm on Android 4.2.2. I don't really care about my data because there's not much on my Nexus 4 right now.
If you guys could help me or point me to some tutorial that works and is easy to follow, please do.

you dont need root then. if you dont understand what you are doing, even after you have root, you will soon be starting a "i bricked my nexus 4" thread. best learn about it first before you root your device.

I also used a toolkit to root my Nexus. I understand that it's recommended to learn ADB, however I'm very careful about what i flash on my device. I think as long as someone can read AND follow instructions, chances of bricking their device are slim.

Easiest way is the toolkit, its only a few steps. But take some time to do some research. If you mess up, you waste a lot more time.

Root question

I want to root my phone, the s4 as listed below. I am new to android but I think I understand how to root it. My concern is that there is no recovery. I am not sure what that means. Does that mean that one cannot unroot or does that mean that if you install a Custom rom that there is no going back? Or, does it mean something else? Thank you.

I think you do not understand how to root if there is no recovery. keep researching. you're a long way from safely rooting your phone.

OP, if your S4 is on the MF3 firmware then look around in the general and q&a sections. there's some material there that will point you in the right direction.
in short, if you are on MF3, you can root only (which i advise against for beginners as there currently is no recovery option). cheers

My question wasn't "what can I do with root?" I wanted to know if it was possible to "unroot" which apparently it is not yet. I would want to root to be able to get more out of titanium backup and Tasker as well as block ads. But thanks for the help.
And yes, I am on MF3. I had root on the prior os and I had to unroot to get the MF3 update which had features I wanted. I just don't know the proper terms I guess. I don't know what a recovery is. To unroot before, I had the two files I needed to delete. I foget what they are. I am sure you guys know. I used to always have my iOS jailbroken. I didn't need to understand too much about it. I could just follow instructions and jailbreak. It was too easy to unjailbreak.

It just wasn't clear that you can't unroot until a recovery is is out there. I thought maybe a recovery was needed if you used a custom rom. I just wanted to use the stock rom and unroot if I wanted to.
Again, I'm not a hacker, just a user that wants more and not a whole lot of time to learn all the in and outs.

I suggest you do a little more research. There is a thread with a method to unroot that multiple people have claimed works with MF3. Of course, you never said what firmware you have...and it does make a difference. But honestly, don't take the advice if you think you don't need it and do what you want Good luck.

You were right, recovery is used to flash custom ROM, back up and restore ROM; but there is no recovery for MF3.
If you just want to use Titanium Backup, adblock then root is enough. And you can unroot.

Afraid to root my nexus 4

Well I just got a new one in the mail and I'm kind of afraid to root it, I rooted my htc evo 3d now it's bricked dwith a red light. Windows detects it but it won't boot but that's another ordeal. Anyway is it possible to brick my nexus 4 on 4.3?

I wouldn't worry about it. Just root using one of the software packages, or do it manually. There are many guides for this. It really is no big deal and almost nothing to worry about IMHO.
The biggest worry is that once you unlock and root, you'll want to flash. Then the addiction begins!!!!!

Just read and do all your researches. Go for it.

did you find that here... This is your first problem if you ask me, you come to xda to ask questions but you do not use the multiple root options that are stickied(for a reason mind you). Try to use a root from another area. Do yourself a favor and read the wugs thread or mskip. No need to go looking elsewhere since its all right in here.
If you have bricked other phone and not sure about what to do then I suggest you enjoy HSPA+ and try and deal with the buttons. Its a great phone and selling cheap now but that does not mean your brick it if you are not sure about rooting.

IMO the only thing daunting in this is the unlock procedure. Once unlocked then rooting, custom recoveries, custom roms, mods, themes, and all else become possible.
When I did it I went old school and used adb and the sdk and did everything manually. I learned a lot on the way, even as I was nervous and worried. I strongly recommend this approach though as it will help you to understand your phone and its operating system. And you also can begin to appreciate the beauty of open-source.
Just follow the directions in the guides posted here at XDA. Go slow. Read. Download the requirements. Be patient. Be meticulous. You will be ok... And if you really don't want to get your hands dirty use one of the 'kits' also available for download here at XDA.

The weird thing was I installed superuser just fine then went to install a few roms and couldn't get anything to work..
I'm just afraid of having a new phone and it instantly being paperweight.

sounds to me that you are not sure of yourself or have not done enough homework prior to flashing or rooting.. If thats the case leave your new phone alone and just enjoy it. Rooting is honeslty easy and fun but if you are not sure of yourself it could be a nightmare.
Its unlock bootloader run a command to push recovery and flash and su.zip quite simple by original 40 step Evo root procedure back in the days

That's the reason for old school. If you get a handle on the basics of adb your phone is almost indestructable from an OS and software standpoint because you can just return to stock images if things go south a little bit....

So guess what, I rooted and everything got Miui rom installed went to restore now my phones stuck on fastboot menu.
Any links on how to get 4.3 back on or am I screwed? cmd still detects my phone, theres gotta be a way to get out of this?
