"800 recharge cycles" - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've seen this number floated around here and there. What does this mean exactly? If the N4 battery life is anything like every other Android phone I've owned, I'll be charging it at least once per day, often twice. On my current GS2 I usually have to top off before I leave work so I have enough juice to last until I go to bed. Then I charge it overnight for a total of 2 recharge cycles per day. Of course my GS2 has a replaceable battery so I don't care if the battery weakens to the point I have to replace it.
But on the Nexus 4, if I am forced to use the same recharging habits, I'll burn through the "800 recharge cycles" in about 12-16 months. Will I be left with a worn out battery after a year? Anybody concerned about this?

I would pay my Nexus 4 more respect than I did with my Desire long time ago
I charge my desire only once a day, but it has only a 1200mAh battery and I really hope that the device is much more energy efficient than my desire. Maybe you can relate to the LG Optimus G, it has aslo 2100mAh battery, maybe it is the same...
Edit: LG plays videos for 7.9 hrs (tested) and ~16 hrs talk, S3 only got ~11 hrs talk and 7.3 hrs playback. I don't think you would need to charge it every day.

LG has also added some of its own home-cooking to the phone, including a battery that uses new technology from LG Chem to offer a lifetime of 800 charges instead of the usual 500, without any changes in size or weight from traditional smartphone

By the way I found out that these 800 cycles are a special feature. Instead of the usually 500 cyles
Yes other batterys often have only 500 times (official, it is just against warranty claims about weak battery I think)

It means it gets through 800 full charges before the battery capacity caps at 80%. The average battery gets through 500 full charges before the capacity caps at 80%

are all of us having this battery drain problem, unique observation

I'm referring to the fact that the battery drains rapidly in the first few minutes, and might drain more rapidly than it should the rest of the day.
heres a post i made on another thread, but created a new topic also because i feel i really want to start a discussion about 2 different things:
1 my perceived odd battery charge cycle.
2 how many of us have this issue?
3 if not all of us have this issue then maybe there's hope i can swap this out for a different phone with out this issue.
here is my original post:
i do have something unique to add to this discussion but first:
well i can say that i did try this "top off" thing and it does seem to work, but as soon as i discharge the battery though use and recharge that night i was right back in the same boat of having a battery that drops very rapidly in the first 10 minutes or so and then continues to drop faster than it should the rest of the day. so imo, this top it off method only works at that moment, ie, not a long term fix.
also, i charged my evo battery in my touch pro2 and the charge didn't drop rapidly in the first few minutes. Also it seemed to last all day much better then it previously. i was able to play around all day with the phone and the battey drain was surprisingly good.
ok, the interesting thing i observed and i can replicate is:
when using the battery graph app i can watch battery level percentages versus time on a chart. in this chart i observed a charge cycle pattern that has me concerned.
while charging the percentage line on the graph was gradually increasing at a semi steady rate from 0% till 90%, then changed its charge rate at 90%
here is how it broke down.
0% 114am
90% 309am steady increase all the way to 90%
100% 315am very rapid charge at this stage (probably not good)
basically it had a steady charge rate of .78% per minute until it hit 90%.
then the remaining 10% rate was: 2.5% per minute.
this last 10% of the charge cycle charges 3.2 times faster rate then the previous 90%. i don't know much about charging but this may be a hint to something that's causing this issue.
also, just how many of us have this issue? all of us, whether we know it or not?
some of use? will there be a fix? is this covered by a warranty or software fix, or so we need to "top it off" every charge?
i'm still within my 30 days and i dont want to swap this out for another if they all have this issue.
I think its the way evo charges the battery.. As I posted about my findinga that when charged in my tp2 I dont see this fast drop anymore. The drop I saw was a 1/8 of the battery icon within 15 min not using.. So more than 10% drainage.. Also its nice the tp2 battery is the same.. So I always have a charged battery so I just switch out batts.. Most of use have this prob unless rooted and tweeked with setcpu..
Edit: only charge batteries from tp2 not from evo anymore..

I have read that this is the way the Evo is supposed to work. The battery charges to 100%, then it quits charging and runs off of the battery until it reaches approximately 90% charge, Then starts charging again. This is supposed to be better for the battery. So, if you take it off of the charger when it is about ready to start charging again, it can drop 10% in the first 5 minutes.
Franky, it appears to work this way with my phone, but I have not had the rapid battery drain issues that some have. My battery regularly makes it through the day fine with moderate to heavy use.
Another thing I have noticed is that not messing with it helps a lot. After I upgrade my rom it seems to take about three days for the battery to get back to its normal cycle. for the first day it drains faster than normal, but last longer each day thereafter.
i have done the same thing with using the touch pro 2 to charge my evo battery. kinda rediculas dont ya think?
that sure makes for an expensive charger, i would much rather sell my touch pro 2 to offset some of the cost for early termination what not.
i talked to customer support and of course their response was the canned response of "your evo is power hungery thats all...yada yada"
do you think that all evo's have this issue and no one else is noticing?
What I find funny is you buy a heavy use device that is designed for using. Everything you do on this device uses battery. I went from the touch pro 2 to this device and I am happier with the EVO than I was with the tp2. You might be surprise how much battery life you would get if you turn off all the radios except for the phone portion and only us this as a phone.
After the touch, mogul, touch pro, and tp2, I am permanently an HTC customer.

The bad thing is not all of us have an extra touch pro 2 lying around to charge our evo.
When I leave my phone on the charger and not use it at all and it drains 10% in 6 minutes that's rediculous. even though my phone has technically been in standby mode and using the battery for the top 10% their hasn't been one time where I took my phone off the charger and it didnt drop in 5 minutes.
Mine is random. Some days I get great battery life, and others I get 5 hours. I'm going having two spare batteries and a wall charger will fix this.

The charging algorithm changes The speed in which it charges the battery at the last 10% of the charge.
This is probably the problem.
My tilt 2 does not do this. Therefore I get a proper charge and the charge lasts as it should.
Look at my findings above.

Can mod be made to that screen doesn't dim at 5%?

I've got extra batteries, so that isn't an issue. Could a mod be made, or an edit of a file, in a text editor, so I could disable this behavior?

I always have an extra oem battery with me too, but I'd also like to see this. I generally take my battery below 5% if I'm going to bed for the night soon and don't want to pop in a fresh battery and the battery has a little power left, I'll milk it

I too would love to make this a reality, especially because I have the ZeroLemon 7500 mAH battery. 5% left with that is fairly substantial, and thus extra annoying to have to use it dimmed.
You do know that taking a lithium battery that low all the time is very bad for the battery. If you got spares why would you drain it like that? Most lithium batteries will fail after around 500 complete charge and discharges but can last 1000's of partial charges.

I have heard this before but so far I have not seen proof. I have been taking my batteries down to zero since the S1. And my daughter is still using the S1 with the original battery in it. And it still gets more than a days charge out of it. And I have done the same with the S2, S3 and my S4. All of which are going strong.
I know mileage varies but after four phones it doesn't seem to have an impact. And if it does have any impact it is very negligible. Enough that I can't tell.
Take the S1 for example. It was purchased on launch day. So it is three years old. That means it has probably close to 1000 charges. It has degraded some but that is normal for a battery that old.
Also look at it this way. If I charge my phone once it hits zero I am charging once a day at most. So 500 charges equals 500 days. If I charge my phone partially I would charge it at least twice a day, probably more. So 500 charges would be 250 days. So it would all work out close to the same in the end anyway.

It is correct that lithium cells can be damaged if discharged beyond a certain point. However, most batteries containing lithium cells are "smart" and contain circuitry which will prevent the cells from being discharged (or overcharged) to the point at which damage will occur.

[Q]How to charge the battery in the right way?

I bought my N4 about 4 month ago,recently I found that the battery life of it from bad to worse...I has connected the extended battery nearly half a day,and charge all night when I sleeping.Does those behavior make the battery bad?How can I repair it or replace a new battery?

Avoid using extended battery life.. Charge your phone til 100% and used it till gets to/around 10% and then charge it again so that the charging cycle is fixed. If you are rooted make a full wipe and install any ROM you like with some good kernels out there that matches the ROM. :good:
It might also be a rough app that you recently installed. Use BetterbatteryStats or Wakelock detector this will show you what is causing the unwanted deadlocks and causing battery drain. :good:

Hi I'm new to nexus 4 and have a battery question. I didn't want to start a new thread. I bought a slightly used nexus 4 and charge it to 100% after only a minute of use it immediately starts to drop. Is this normal? I ask because I had an HTC sensation that I charged to 100% and could at least get 10 minutes of use before battery started to drop. Is there something wrong with the battery or is this just the way the nexus 4 operates?

Nexus 4 works this way.. Its all right if battery drops in a minute.. There are plenty of process and their corresponding syncs that actually causes the battery to drain.. Try some different kernel all are good you will get more battery backup.:good:
BUT Stock Rom + Stock kernel are THE BEST.
Maintaining battery health requires a bit of a balance. You don't want to frequently do deep discharges, but you also don't want to charge your phone every time it drops by 10%. If you're sitting around with a charger, plug your phone in when it hits 50%, then let it charge fully before unplugging it.
Overall though, batteries just degrade. You're not going to have a huge impact on the health of your battery unless you're charging it every time it hits 95%.
How about using a slower charger over night? I believe the OEM is what, 1.2amps? I have a couple 1amp chargers from previous phones I had. Will that charge slower/safer?

Modern lithium ion batteries are fairly robust and more chemically sound than early rechargeable batteries. However they do have a finite number of charge cycles.
But you have to understand what a charge cycle is, a full drain to 0 and charge to 100.
So for example Draining to 50 then up, then 50 again then up= 1 charge cycle.
So... Draining it to 95 and bumping it to 100 would take 20 times to reach 1 charge cycle.
Trickle charging vs the oem power used isn't going to make much difference either.
Being ocd about the battery is just going to make you pay more attention to it and thus making you more aware of drain...just use the darn phone and enjoy it!

there is no right way. plug it in when you need a charge, or when there is just a plug around and you want to top off. you do not need to discharge battery to a certain point then charge. just charge it whenever. all these other theories are just that, theories. at work all day, i bump charge it whenever i reach around 80-85%. my battery has not gotten worse. and when im not around chargers, my battery is built to last. i average around 5.5-7.5 hours screen on time, depending what im doing, and im a heavy user.

truth.
The battery will only be able to take 1.2 amps or what ever, for the first 10% or so of battery life. By 25% charge, its only sucking around 750ma, and by 50% you are lucky to suck a half amp. Lion batteries do not charge via constant current, they charge via constant voltage (with the voltage dropped for 25% battery charge or less due to over current). So as the battery charges (aka increases in voltage) it draws less and less current.
You want a tip from a guy that has to run the lion battery analyzer for flight modules, keep your battery between 15% and 85%, and long term story them around 30%-40%. A pack that is left on a good charger ($75 or more) charger and never gets below 98% will loose its capacity at double the rate of a pack that floats above 15% and only gets charged to full when needed.
Ive had packs in the field coming back for recal from 2003 still holding above 90% rated capacity because they dont leave them on the charger and dont let them go dead in a locker some where. On the other side ive had 2 year old packs come back that are at 80% capacity ( i fail them at 85%) or less because they sat dead for a year.

Above are all incorrect!
Charge at 50% and you can do it about 1500 times.
Charge at 20% and you can do it about 700 times.

I hope you dont do that for all your phones as it will destroy your battery way sooner. Charge it when it reaches 50% and you can do 3 to 5 years with the battery at 24/7 use. (Instead of the 1 to 2 years when draining the battery).
Yes, it is recommended to charge the battery when it below 40% and disconnect the charger when it reach 99%. Do not overchange.
There was a big test I did read and the best was to keep it between 40 and 80 percent.

Are you guys seriously sitting and watching until the battery goes down to certain percentage? And for what? Battery is easy to replace and not that expensive, it has a circuit to protect it from over and under charging, to avoid the damage and you get many more shallow charge/discharge cycles than deep ones as already mentioned. I charge my phone daily in the evening at my convenience, usually before I go sleep regardless of what's left (unless I use it so much it can't last until evening), so by the time I go sleep it's 100% and by morning it will be around 97% and normally last me whole day. I've been doing this for yrs and for example my 4yr old Nokia I gave to my friend, still lasts him couple days of light use on original battery. I wouldn't worry about it at all. Every few months you may want to fully discharge it to lets say 3-5% to have the meter calibrated and maybe clean the contacts with alcohol every six months or so, but that's all the maintenance my battery will get or need. If it fails before the phone, it probably had some factory defect or something, but no big deal as long as there is replacement easy to buy and with so many millions of notes sold, there should be.

Couldn't agree more, I charge mine on a evening regardless and phone gets me easily through a day. If I notice a massive drop in the battery not holding a charge then I will buy a new one. More important things to worry about in life than watching my percentage for the battery.

That is good as a principle but the numbers are still rather big and depend even more on the charging current - if you charge (even) from 50% with 2000 mAh it will never last 1500 recharges - that is why Samsung has slightly improved the Note 3 recharging algorithm so as to use (variable) lower currents (even if the charger is 2000 mAh), and also why it is still far, far better to recharge from a very good USB at under 500 mAh (actually 450) - and indeed preferably from over 40%.

As long as the charging current is lower then 1C (1 full charge for the note3 its 3200mAh) its not a problem and wont shorten lifetime.
But yeah charging at lower currents is better, but more due to less heat and induction.
Anyway its just sad that other people with little to no knowledge about lithium batterys are giving advice, and WRONG advice at that.
Just read the link i posted in previous post (page1) there are the facts. Dont believe just anybody, people are stupid. (yeah im people too )
The chemical reaction will be less when battery is drained and is hard to recover.
But if the battery seems dead, put it in the freezer for 2 or 3 hours and it will be recoverable.
Theres more to these batterys than people think.

Oneplus replacement parts availability for the next 5 years (battery, screen)

Hey xda,
I'm that kind of person who likes to keep his phones for 4-5 years.
To this day I'm still rocking my galaxy s4, many parts are available.
The oneplus 5 looks like a good phone to last at least 5 years, but as everyone knows, batteries fail, in my experience after about 2-2.5 years.
If I look for OPO batteries now, there only seem to be A: original OP batteries which have been laying in some warehouse for 4 years (bad for the battery) And B: third party batteries from questionable manufracturers (having bad reviews).
So my questions are:
What's your experience with oneplus 1/x/2/3 replacement parts (especially batteries) ?
Do you think it will be better with the oneplus 5 ?
(Should we push compagnies like RAVpower and anker to start producing op5 batteries? )

The oneplus 5 battery doesn't get hot when charged so theoretically it should last longer

Might be, but it also charges at a greater amperage. And eventually, it will fail..
It's probably too soon to see Op5 batteries on the market since the phone has only been out in Spring. And I think the OnePlus 3/3T was the first OnePlus phone that broke out of the niche market --and that phone is only a little over a year old so demand for new batteries probably isn't there yet. I would expect better choices becoming available for both phones since the OnePlus phones are becoming more popular. It seems possible this phone could last 5 years. I previously had Google phones and getting much more than 2 years out of those was like winning the lottery.
The phone may last, the battery not.
Batteries lose some of their capacity after a certain number of charge cycles, regardless what you do.
After a year or so, your battery will have about 80% of its capacity left. That's about 2400mAh after one year. By the second year you should be thinking about replacing it.
I think batteries in the past few years have gotten better. My one friend used his 2010 HTC desire for over 3 years before the original battery started to get weak (had like 70 percent of its original charge). His next phone I gave him was an HTC one s. The battery was still fine after 4 years when the amoled screen started to fail. Now he's using the 2013 moto x and the battery is still lasting 2 days like when I have it to him a couple years ago.
My galaxy s6 battery was still fine when I traded it in a few weeks ago. I've actually had quite a few older phones that didn't have any battery issues. The only ones I can remember having to replace the battery was a galaxy s3 I bought used and an HTC desire HD from 2011.
That said I'm sure we'll be able to get a battery because I do plan to keep this phone long enough to need a battery replacement. I'm guessing 4 years I will have to replace it.
With battery replacement costing $100+ you are probably better off buying a prior year midrange model than hauling around a clunker with severely outdated software for 5 years. For example, nowadays it is possible to purchase a Moto G5+ for around $220 NIB (there was a recent newegg deal).

My 5 years old galaxy s4 runs 7.1. Oneplus 5's developper community is even better so it'll stay up to date for a long time.

5 yr old battery consumption and processor speed
5 yr old other tech (fingerprint readers, camera, GPS, magnetometer, light sensor)
vs
nearly lastest for all of the above for $100 more. Note that unlike your S4 the OP5 is a sealed battery so unless you have the right tools you cannot change the battery yourself.

I can change the battery myself. I've had a few phones apart before. Its not that difficult. The cost of a battery will probably be like $20. The tech has gotten to the point where it's not improving nearly as fast. People will be using 5 year old phones 5 years from now. They cost double what they did 5 years ago for a flagship.

I don't know, I think the oneplus 5 is an amazing future proof devices, in 5 years galaxies will probably not have 8gigs of ram,
I don't play games so the 835 should be more than enough, fingerprint reader will still be one of the fastest (it's already kinda instantaneous) and 1080p works just fine for me
The reason I'm not going for a budget phone anymore is that've had bad experiences with budget devices in the past:
- The nexus 7 was unusable after only 2 years, freaking slow.
- The moto g2 is the slowest device I've ever used, I think it has some memory problems, it's slow on any custom rom I've flashed on it.
In addition to that budget devices just give a worse experience overall
Don't worry for the battery, repairing electronics is my hobby

That is an untrue statement. There is no set amount of time to determine lots of capacity. Look up BatteryUniversity.com and look for lithium battery page on charge cycles.
In short, never let your battery deplete completely. The depth of discharge (DoD) directly impacts loss of battery capacity. Your battery charge cycles is when your charge from more then 80% or less to full 100%. So for example... If you wait to charge your phone when it's under 25%, you will get roughly 250-350 charge cycles before significant lots of capacity. The rest goes like this... Charge at 25-50%, you'll get roughly 350-500 cycles and 50-75% 500-700 cycles and from 75%+ upwards of 1000 charge cycles.
My Nexus 6P was 18 months old and still had a capacity of 3100mah of 3400 (88%). So if you know what you're doing and take care of your battery, it can last much longer then expected expected.

How is my statement untrue? You just confirmed what I said.
No matter what you do, the battery will lose capacity. You can lower the amount of the capacity loss, but you can't prevent it fully.
And most people don't charge their phones until around the 30% range. According to you, that's about 250-350 charge cycles. And if you charge once a day, that's roughly a year.
So my estimate of the battery having roughly 20% less capacity after approximately a year was correct.
Not to mention the other factors that aid in the capacity loss (overcharging and heat).
Trust me, the average user doesn't take care of their batteries. I observed this at my friends and acquaintances. They always use their phones until it gets very low and then charge it.

I'm not staying they don't lose capacity, but why I said untrue is that you said batteries have a certain amount of charge cycles, and that will vary if you take care of your battery, and that after 1 year you will only have 80% of the capacity, and again, untrue. I was at 18 months and still at 88%.
I'm just saying is that is not set in stone and if people educate themselves on hour to take care of a battery it will last longer.
I'm also aware of this and charge my battery before it gets below 35 sometimes before 50. This is probably why so many phones I've had lasted well over 3 years on the original batteries.
