New Software Update for Nexus One phones
Starting today, Nexus One users will begin to receive an over-the-air software update on their phones. This update provides some great new features, and fixes a few problems that some users might have experienced, including:
Google Goggles: this mobile application will now be available directly on your device by launching it from your All Apps menu. Just use your Nexus One camera to start searching the web
Google Maps: the Maps application with be updated to a new version, Google Maps 3.4, which will include:
* Starred items synchronized with maps.google.com - access your favorite places from your phone or computer
* Search suggestions from your personal maps.google.com history - makes it easy to search for places you've searched for before
* Night mode in Google Maps Navigation - automatically changes your screen at night for easier viewing and driving
Pinch-to-zoom functionality: devices will now include a new pinch-to-zoom mechanism in the phone's Browser, Gallery and Maps applications
3G connectivity: we will provide a general fix to help improve 3G connectivity on some Nexus One phones
In order to access the update, you will receive a message on your phone's notification bar. Just download the update, wait for it to install, and you should be all set. This update will be rolled out gradually to phones - and most users might not receive the notification until the end of the week. We hope you enjoy these new features and look forward to your feedback.

Google is including pinch-to-zoom? Maybe it's the cynic in me, but I'm not buying this blogpost right now...
Edit: I just saw that's an official Google blog... wonder what made Google backpedal on their "one-handed operation" focus...

Maybe it was Steve Jobs comments about Google "dont be evil" being bull***t that made them include it in the update.

I'm happy for the Ameri...er, us too! Don't get me a wrong.. I'm a fan of one-handed operation, but we should have had the option from the get go. Plus this nullifies one of the iPhone fanboy's claims. They still have a better device built into their phone... but whatever. I don't listen to much music anyway.

Oh don't worry... they'll find something. The built-in media player being a case in point.
one has to wonder just how much apple asked for monetarily in order for google to update the phone with multitouch support stateside.
glad to see it arriving so quickly after the initial release of the phone.
the only thing I miss from my iphone is the application support. Pandora, Facebook, etc...they are years beyond on the iphone compared to android devices. I know they are catching up but that really is a pain point considering how fantastic a device this is.
Imagine what will come of iphone users when flash finally hits android devices world wide?
the rumor that i always felt had the largest grain of truth was that apple asked google to not do it because it could invalidate apples shady patents and since a google ceo was on the board of director for apple a one point in time it was kind of an ok well just for a little while also why not make google the default iphone search provider
so now my theory is that when apple started to proposition microsoft to use bing as iphone default search this obviously pissed off google and now multi-touch
maybe i listen to too much TWiT though
Okay whom ever here is in a relationship with a Google employee does us all a favor and take care of this for us. Thanks, really appreciate it. This country needs you!
hahaha, good one.

This guy says that Google is pulling it out over the air NOW:
Google Announces Android 2.2 Froyo
posted Today, 10:43 AM by Eric M. Zeman
updated Today, 11:44 AM
Today at its I/O Conference in San Francisco, Google introduced Android 2.2 Froyo. Froyo builds on Android 2.1 Eclair and offers a number of improvements. The largest new feature is built-in support for tethering and Wi-Fi hotspots. It also has a refreshed home screen that adds permanent "Phone" and "Web" buttons alongside the Menu key. Google has also taken pains to improve the performance of applications and the Android Market. Users can now update all their applications in one step, rather than each at a time. Google also said that users can choose to have their applications update automatically. Android 2.2 also takes advantage of the Dalvik Virtual Machine. This tool vastly improves the speed of the platform. By incorporating a just-in-time compiler, applications are five to ten times faster than with Android 2.1. Android 2.2 is now more Microsoft Exchange friendly, and includes features such as auto-discovery, contacts sync and improved security controls. Google says it has boosted JavaScript performance in the browser to make it faster, as well. The browser also now includes Adobe Flash Player 10.1. Some of the new APIs in Android 2.2 will help move user and application data from device to device. Among other new features, Android users will now be able to store apps on external memory, instead of the device's internal storage. This should allow for larger apps, which will include more advanced games. The Google App Market has long had a Web component to browser applications, but now users can choose an app from the Web-based Market, and the phone will start downloading the app automatically. Additionally, Google will be offering a streaming music service. Using an app on a desktop PC, Android users will be able to listen to their entire, non-DRM music library over the air on their Android phones. Android 2.2 Froyo will be available today to owners of the Nexus One. It can be downloaded over the air. Android 2.2 will also be made available to the Motorola Droid in the near future. Google also plans to make it available to devices such as the HTC Incredible, EVO 4G and Desire, and the Motorola Milestone.

Froyo is a surprise treat - not a demand
Ohai! Another thread for froyo!
As opposite to the previous link..this has some interesting news.
Many of the older device owners and early adopters will be glad to hear this one – I’ve talked to a bunch of Google folks in charge of developing Android at the Google I/O, and they told me that technically it would be possible to put Froyo on any device on the market now, including the G1.
Since I was trying to specifically concentrate on the G1s due to those devices having the lowest specs among all Android phones, a lot of my questions were asked with this Android dinosaur in mind.
During my discussions, I was told that even though the G1 had smaller internal storage capacity, it would be possible to package up an update without the extra Google apps, and then install them later on a different partition (or so I understood). In fact, Cyanogen already kind of does this whole Google app separation in his CyanogenMods but that is due to a C&D he had received. Either way, technically it’s already been shown possible. Also, when I brought up Cyanogen, the Google devs had no doubt he’d be able to pull off a Froyo update for the G1, regardless of whether the carrier would want to bring it to you or not.
Such an update would not be OTA and would wipe the phone, which is not entirely unheard of, considering the last Sprint HTC Hero update does exactly that.
Furthermore, I was told that there are unofficial test builds running Froyo on G1s within Google, and they’re speedy as hell compared to the previous versions, making up for the slower CPU and lower specs in general. Could it be that your old G1 will be able to shine brighter than it had ever before?
Of course, as far as official releases go, it will be entirely up to the carriers and the manufacturers to package up and offer the Froyo updates to their customers.

"Congratulations, Nexus One users! You'll be getting Froyo later today. Everyone else, you're just going to have to hold tight; firmware updates are largely up to the carriers and OEMs, and some poor saps only got their Android 2.1 upgrade in the last week. The more recent Android handsets should see an update in the next few months"

Hi All,
I thought I would just share my encounter with Samsung Customer Centre in Sydney.
I spoke with a rep this morning, below is my lose recollection of the conversation:
Me: "Hi, I was wondering when the Samsung Galaxy S will be upgraded to Froyo"
Samsung Rep: “It should be soon, but we really don’t know”
Me: “Well the websphere has been showing that the upgrade was meant to be end of August, then end of September and now sometime in October, so there’s still no news”
Samsung Rep: “No, what they are doing is working with the carriers to test the firmware, if there are any bugs the carriers are sending it back to Samsung US to fix, then Samsung US will send it back to the Australia carriers to retest. It can take some time”
Me: “So you’re saying that Froyo is in it’s testing cycles”
Samsung Rep: “Yeah”
So what we can see here is that release could be imminent as they are now going through User Acceptance Testing. This leads me to believe that whatever Froyo Firmwares are floating around out there, are likely to be as close to final as they will ever be.
For all the people out there who have installed the current Froyo builds who are expecting to see more, I don’t think that’s going to happen, but if some of the issues on the phones feel like bugs there is still hope to get them fixed.
I suspect Samsung will get out Froyo soon and once the angry mobs are abated, will then use their pressure free time to really optimise it.
Cheers,
Irwin Proud
I seriously hope that is not true, if what is floating around are the "final" ones, then we are in a deep crap load of doo doo here.
so many devices dead due IMEI damage, and many more dead due Internal SD overkill, and all the bugs people have reported... the future suddently just looks darker
I think the IMEI problem is a bug, so I'm sure it's being worked on. I actually think it could be a hardware problem, as I had to have my mainboard replaced after an Odin flash that caused the IMEI number to corrupt. I got a call from the Samsung repairer a couple of weeks ago and he was saying it was happening to more phones.
I think it'll work well (not great), it just won't be the powerful beast that it should be. Samsung may not have had the best judgement when they decided to make 8 phones with the same architecture, but slightly different specs. It means that they have to split their resources across the different phones just to do the one Android 2.2 update for them.
I agree with the canook there p), It seems that Samsung is using us XDA ppl to be unpaid guinie pigs. NOT HAPPY JAN!

From what I've been reading, apparently it is, it's just not optimised for hummingbird.
So in other words, blame the carriers. Something I've done for years. Greedy b all of them. Can just hope the mobile market approaches the "freedom" seen for the net and not the other way around.
my insider also told me the same thing back in 1 month ago..
and last week he still insisted it is currently under carrier testing and most probably will be done by next week...
so far all the soruces i got from him was true and accurate(like the date SGS released by optus and vodafone, galaxy tab details, etc)
Why is everyone lusting so much for the Froyo? Unless its the people that are experiencing the gps issue and lag. My SGS is perfect so far, none of the problems stated above, so for me when the update comes its welcome but until then am i missing anything much really?

My main issue is that Samsung releases a full GPS fix in Froyo, so I can use the phone as advertised. I can live with a little lagg now and again.
I just hope they sort it, or my phone is going back!

In regards to the GPS problem, whenever I was on google maps before, it would never give me my location and then after I updated the google maps app it found the locations perfectly.
But CoPilot Live has always worked well on my SGS.

For me the speed of the phone is good enough, I only install a dozen extra apps and they work fine enough.
The color is fine in my phone running Froyo JPK. Wifi, 3G, FM radio, video playback, work fine.
The GPS keeps being a Guessing Positioning System. It smoothes the path for 15 seconds or so, and when you turn 90º, it keeps showing that you're traveling along the previous street for several seconds. Then it starts moving the position to the new street, doing a curve... But this takes so much time that you may be on the next intersection before the dot is in the correct street. Then if you turn 90º again, the dot overshots the corner, continues along the second street, does a smooth curve heading slowly to the 3rd street...

That's exactly why I am eager for Froyo to be released for the SGS. My phone isn't as stable as others' handsets, the lag is a pain in the arse and there are features such as JIT, that will make my SGS experience much more pleasant, and Chrome to Phone, that will make more productive use of my time.

The only lag i have experienced is when adding app shortcuts. Which is not deal breaker for me at all.
And why would someone buy basically "hyper-phone" for calls only? Think about it little bit before making a statement like that.
And speaking about the standards, what that has to do with anything?
GPS works just as it did on my iPhone with Copilot.

Well thats bloody great! grrrrr.. Thats the only thing I wanted out of Froyo. Looks like i'll be staying on Eclair til maybe sometime next year when they sort out the optimizing. Man I'm lusting at the Desires as their JIT works and it more then doubled the Quadrant scores (yeh yeh i know Quadrant is a **** benchmarker)
Thank god for Cyengenmod team as I think they will do a proper release once Froyo source is out.
Since getting my phone back from the Samsung repairer after the IMEI corrupted, i've been reluctant to flash these beta roms using Odin.
So I'm more than happy waiting till it's official. I came from the Nexus One with Froyo, I went for the Galaxy because of it's superior specs, especially 4" screen and 2GB Nand.
I've also really appreciated some of the improvements that TouchWiz has brought to the experience.
But Froyo on the Nexus One was a game changer, it completely opened up the phone and made it fly. I would rather wait for Samsung to get JIT optimised, clean up their system and smoothen the entire interface before releasing Froyo. It's more their lack of engagement with their customers that's the problem.
Has anyone used Fennec, with their nightlies? That's the way to engage your community and get buy in for the wait.
Development cycles are not perfect and when you fix one bug a new one opens up, all I say is let us know its getting there.

I have had my phone for over two months and can honestly say that I have never experienced a lag of more than 2secs when opening any app on my phone.
Whilst I am looking forward to FroYo, I will definately be waiting until I have heard a few reactions from more experienced users before rushing to download.

10 seconds to launch an app? Never had that. Not sure on which firmware is that but my JM2 bog standard have never needed so much to open a app.
Copilot opens up for me in around 4 seconds. And thats after the reboot before killing all the apps that are running in the background.
I'm going to be honest here, i'm pretty shocked about the interconnectivity between the tablet and the smartphone.
Android has a huge market share, and a lot of people with android phones are going to go for the android tablet (obviously). So why didn't they go the RIM or HP way and allow text messages to be responded to on the tablet, phone calls to be denied, etc. etc. It would be a real big incentive to have an android tablet and smartphone. Not to mention it would mean your phone could go in your pocket and stay there while you use your tablet to do most things.
I might be harping for a feature that isn't necessary but it really was something I was excited about in the tablet market. The interconnected feeling of your devices. It really burns me up that the companies that are doing it are doing it only for their respective platforms :/.
Anybody agree this should be a in a future update?
Hell yea, i'm sure most of us would love to see this. I know i'd use it all the time.
I agree but we'll probably have to wait for ice cream for this. Both the phone and tablet will have to be ready for this.

I'd love if they could do it without having to enable bluetooth. Both devices are connected to your gmail account and gtalk, so it would be awesome if it just routed texts and notifications from the phone to the tablet automatically without having to enable any extra radios.
Dont know if anyone other than google could enable that level of functionality though.
I would like to think that Google wont let Android be out done by webOS. They are setting themselves up to be in the best possible position for this.
This is a feature that I believe the community will respond to. I think that google left some of the interconnective features between phone and tablet off of the devices because that is an area that can be filled by the community. I think many of the features people see as "missing" are things that Google intentionally let's the community customize. That is a very exciting prospective for me.

I would expect to see something like this coming from Google directly, especially given the way that webOS makes it happen so smoothly. Google has said that 2.4 for phones will bring a lot of stuff back from 3.0 and integrate into 2.4, maybe we can see something like this happen but I'm not holding my breath.
This isn't an app kind of job. Seems to have to be built in to be good.

I was twice the victim of the Internal SD failure. Both times Bell tried blaming Samsung, and Samsung tried blaming Bell when the issue was well known...
Mine died, got it repaired, running perfectly since...hardware defects happen it went about as well as it could have at least in my case.
We'll know very soon after SGS2 release whether GPS works. Myself I expect they won't make that mistake again, but perhaps some other mistakes as phones are never perfect....
Have fun waiting for Bell updates with locked bootloader...
im scared of no updates as well. Not sure what to do. Love the phone overall but if the phone is gonna be behind in the updates i might trade it for the desire hd/inspire. I wont however, trust any samsung product.
Its clearly a bit of a worry when you read that someone on the Motorola Owners Forum approached Bell, and asked about the .57 update AT&T got. The response he got was "what update??"
I'm going to be watching what happens over the next month. If AT&T continues to get updates, and the 2.3 update hits AT&T with no indication its coming to Bell, then I'm going to switch to an AT&T handset..
Looks like there is no chance the Atrix is going to be released by the big three carriers here in Australia any time soon either...
I'm finally finding out what a POS Motorola and Bell is using this phone.... I should have picked up the AT&T handset instead of the Bell one for sure

Like I said we'll know after release. Nexus S is most of the same hardware as the SGS, disappointing that they didn't fix it but who knows how 'deep' the problem was or what the timeframe was (they only released some 6 months apart).
One of the best mods for the SGS is BLN (backlight notification), basically lights up the soft-key backlights as a notification light.
If Samsung was really smart they'd pull that feature in to their stock setups, but really it will just be implemented by SGS2 XDA devs again.
A software update is now available for the Bell version of the Motorola Atrix!
- To download the update manually:
Go to: Menu > Settings > About Phone > Software Update
- I'm not sure what the size of the update file is, but I would suggest downloading it over WiFi as opposed to the Bell network so you don't exceed your data allowance and incur extra charges.
- Ensure that your phone is at least 50% charged before attempting the update. Idealy, charge it beyond 50% to be safe.
