[Q] Nook frozen - Nook Touch General

Hi.
My Nook Touch is frozen on the Read Forever screen, with colors reversed (white on black). The problems began 3 days ago when it stopped booting with the battery. It continued to work normally, but only when connected to the computer or to the wall charger. Two things only were different: 1) the battery indicator showed an interrogation mark, 2) the device rebooted by itself when connected. The light stayed amber.
I tried different things, but I wasn't careful enough: I disconnected the device from the charger while it was booting. Since then, the screen hasn't changed. I tried booting from the memory card with the salsichanooter, with noogie and with my backup image, but none worked. The light is green.
My Nook is 14 months old. I rooted it successfully with salsicha under firmware version 1.1.0 several months ago. I can use Windows 7 64-bit and XP 32-bit.
Is there any hope of recovery ?
Thanks

I don't know. How long is the warranty on a Nook? I voided mine pretty quickly.
Take it apart, disconnect the battery, reconnect the battery, connect the charger, power up.
Use either UsbMode or
Code:
am start -n com.android.settings/.BatteryInfo
to see what's going on with your battery.

The warranty is 12 months, I believe.
Yes, I want to open it. But how do I do it safely ? I wish you could tell me where are the clips that hold the 2 parts together.

The Nook Touch comes apart pretty simply.
You need to first remove the SD card.
Then pop the power button carefully off using a knife blade between the top edge of the case and the button.
Underneath is a tiny screw covered with a sticker.
Remove the sticker and use a Torx T-5 to undo the screw.
The top and the bottom will slide past each other about 3/8" then come apart.

Renate, thanks to you, my Nook is up and running again. UsbMode gave me this:
Request: write error
State: b_peripheral
Vbus drive: Vbus off, timeout 1100
Vbus sense: off
Power: battery
Status: full
Health: good
Regulator: disabled
Max current: auto
Battery: 4.162 v, 100%
Temperature: 22 C, 72 F
Is there anything I should change, and how ?
More important, what was the cause of my problem ? Did I wait too long before recharching ?
Thanks again

I had to reset the NST and reroot it. Everything is ok now.

[Q] black screen and white stripes (CM9)

Update4: (14.01.2012 1244): This method didn't work. I sent my Defy back to Amazon and they repaired it under warranty
They will send it back to me next week. It seems that it was a production failure.
Anyway, thank you very much for your help cengiran!
Hi Guys!
I do have a big problem with my Defy.
I updated the CM9 onto the newest version and had to activate my google-acc. I didnt finish the smartphone registration and put my Defy to the side. Today morning the battery was empty and I reloaded the battery. After that I turned the device on but the only thing it shows is a black screen with stripes (even in cwm and bootloader). Does anyone know how to fix my Defy??? The Defy boots completely but the screen remains crappy ;(
Please help me!!!
With best regards
HT
Edit1: (27.12. 1421): New day, same problem ;( Still found nothing helpful...
Update: (27.12. 1736): Flashed a new fixed sbf with RSD Lite. Still the same problem. Could it be a hardware problem??? LCD-Display broken or stuff like that? Didnt throw the phone through the room like others (^^);
Update2: (29.12. 0801): Error still remains... Is their anyone who had the same problem or who can help me? Do I have to replace my Defy? Might there be problems with Amazon (warranty) because of root and stuff like that?
Update3: (30.12. 2217): Now trying the tip by cengiran:

hi there,
i have the same issue but not due to CM9 installation but due to hardware issue. judging by your writing, this has nothing to do with software and so hopefully this helps.
My screen is also black at boot with some part of it are stripes (and some bad white and blue square w/ noise) and looks like a broken LCD monitor.
This is due to hardware malfunction (probably your battery went bad) in my defy the battery have some water damage and somehow it screws up the voltage regulator or the grounding part, but does boot with the correct screen using some techniques on every boot.
Try this solutions:
1. completely discharge your battery, take it off, hold the phone power button for 30 seconds to make sure every power stored in phone is out. Put the battery back on and connect the charger while the phone is still off. DO NOT turn the phone on. Your screen will look all mess up when showing the green battery, wait until 3hours and take a look at your screen again. In my case, the screen showing the the battery charging image is clear again after i did this. - this is to make sure that your screen is actually okay. Try turning your phone now and see...if its still bad then go to step 2.
2. turn phone off, open the battery case. Connect phone to charger again without turning it on. The phone will do its regular boot up until showing you the battery icon again. when the battery icon is there, PULL the BATTERY out of the phone (the charger cable is still connected to the phone). the phone will reboot itself with the correct screen usually, if it doesnt boot itself, quickly pull charger cable and reconect it again (with the battery still detached from your phone).
mind you if you get to the okay screen, this will not boot your phone, this will bring you as far to the battery icon with a question mark (we know for sure is just battery issue now). regardless screen is okay or not, proceed to step 3.
3. turn off phone, battery out of the phone, and press the power button for 30 seconds. release power button and re-insert battery and boot. (usually still bad but this is to ground any left voltage in there). after it boots (with the bad screen, if the screen is okay then proceed to using your phone like usual) before the LED lights blinks (the 2nd.init lights) pull out battery, press the power button for 2 seconds, re- insert, and boot. repeat this as necessary until it boots with an okay screen.
tips:
battery empty is for step 1 only, steps 2 and 3 needs power form the battery.
You can actually go to step 3 if you wishes, but my experience is by using step 2, it will talke less retry until i boot with the okay screen (i need to do this everytime i restart the phone mind you, so its a daily thing) .
the LAST tip: there no rules of thumb on how many retries it needs, if you have been retrying for 20 minutes on step 3 with no avail, revert back to step 1 or 2 and retry step 3. If this is sill fails, then you might need to consider purchasing a new battery, or take it for a repair!
Im still waiting for my new battery, but now it only takes me 5-6 tries before it boots correctly, in the apst it took me 15 minutes of constantly retrying so be patient, but still need to set a line when to give up!
Hope this helps and good luck
how does it go?
to completely discharge your battery is tricky...and actually not recommended because i heard our kind of battery should never went completely gone, it can mess up the battery capacity. i suggested it because thays what i did and in this case, battery cost much less then actual repair,,call it collateral if you will.
heres what i did to completly discharge it...after the phonse turned off automatically due to battery running out, it still have around 2% in it so reboot and enter 2ndinit/boot loader. let it stay there until the phone turned off on its own again. in 2nd init, the phone wont turn off screen so it will continue using whatever is left in the battery. keep n mind that even at very small amount of juice left, this process can takes up 2hrs or more.

Hi cengiran,
thank you very much for your help. I will try this immediately. The only problem I do have that my battery doesn't want to go empty XD
There are so many people who want their battery to last as long as possible and now I want to get it empty a quick as possible XD Irony
Since 26th December 1004 pm my Defy runs with one single battery charge XD I think thats a pretty good battery life for a smartphone ;D
If your tips don't work I will sent it back to Amazon and hopefully they send me a new one or repair my old one.
Thanks again and I will post if your method works.
With best regards

P.S. Amazing that this thread is the 1st Google search result for this problem XD

Thanks a lot, a mix of these two works for me !
My problem arise after a month that I switched off defy for replacing it with a new smartphone (Xiaomi M2S).
I removed battery to force it to switch off, because I couldn't see anything.
I replaced the battery, I connected the phone to charger and after ten seconds (more or less) I removed the battery.
At this point I can see the Motorola logo. I've re-inserted the battery and it shows that it is at 97%.
For sure, the lcd is working

[Q] Nook Simple Touch not responding?

This was what happened - my N2T went dead, and I charged it up to 100%. It has previously been rooted with TouchNooter, and since my market wouldn't open, I overrooted it with TouchSalsa. Or so I remember. It may be different. I just remember that I used 2 different roots over each other. Didn't think anything would happen...
Anyways, all was fine and dainty with the N2T till the day the battery's charge was depleted. Charged it to full - Battery Indicator went green - and then proceeded to unlock it.
It was still responding at the lock screen, but once I unlocked it, it went straight to my Android home screen, and it just hanged. It has been showing the Android homescreen for quite a while now (probably due to the static e-ink screen, I believe it has died for a long long time), and nothing I do will make it reboot. I thought about forcing the battery out, but it was not user removable.
n2T-recovery wouldn't work too, as I can't make it reboot.
Any answers as to how I could make it rebott and/or restore the firmware like how I could force an iDevice into DFU mode?
Any help would be appreciated, as I imported this device into my country and it is not possible for me to send it back .
If anyone has encountered this problem before, feel free to shout out here too. My Nook Simple Touch has died for around 2 weeks now. I was hoping that the battery would run out and I could charge it but.... the battery indicator STILL shows green when I plug it in.
Also, whenever I plug it into my computer, the connected sound that happens when you plug in a USB drive just sounds - followed immediately by the disconnect sound. This happens in a loop until I plug out the Nook.

Same issue, i already open the cover and remove battery, the screen still display screensaver. Then I plugged NT into wall charger , then removed (to try make it reboot). Plugged battery into again but , plugged charger . But nothing happened, still the same.
Any other solution?
Just a hint: It appears that the Nook won't boot without the battery in.
I don't know if it's an interlock with the temperature sensor on the battery.
The chip that does the power management is capable of powering a CPU with a dead/shorted/missing battery.
Guess no one had a similar issue?
It is the same with my NST. It was bricked when I root it back to factory restore. The battery light is green, do everything you did to the battery, still no respond. I am not in the US so I can not take my NST to the local B&N store.
I get my NST only 1 week...
PS:Finally I get my NST back following this thread

Formatted internal memory, battery drained, wont turn on

Hello
Well, i have problem.I erased all partitions on internal memory and accidentally ripped of wires from battery while opening case of my NST. Friend of mine successfully soldered wires back in correct order. Now, when i connect nook to charger, light is green, when connect without battery, light is also green.
Wierd is when i connect without battery to computer, first flashes orange light, then green constantly. Also, immediately Win7 looks for OMAP 3630 driver and disconnects.
When battery is inserted, immediately lights up green light, and after 10 seconds of pushing power button, Win searches for same driver and disconnect.
What happened to battery, is it dead, drained or something else. Before ripping wires, battery worked good.
I readed somewhere that nook cannot charge battery while off, so my question is what happened to battery and how to revive my nook to restore backup. Can Nook boot noogie without OS? Currently, Nook wont power on, screen is not flashing.
Sorry for my poor English , any help will be appreciated :fingers-crossed:

Sounds like the battery is dead indeed. I had a similar problem with my old Motorola Defy, flashing went bad, battery was dead and unfortunately battery wouldn't charge in that state. I did manage to get it working though using the McGyver trick!
Check this thread out for info on how to do this, it explains using the Motorola Defy but I imagine the process would be pretty similar here.

Not working, same thing, always green light. My friend soldered and jumpstarted again, and nothing. Maybe sometthing hapened with electronics on battery, with temperature sensor, i dont know...
Gevara
Let us make an assumption the the wiring is soldered correctly and there is no internal damage to the circuitry.
If you have symptoms like: (1) NST won't start and doesn't respond to any key (2) green light indicates full charge.
... then (usually) the controller in the charging circuit "thinks" the battery is full while it is really empty. You need the controller to "forget" that the battery is full.
Just disconnect the battery and let NST lie there for, say, an hour (although usually 10 minutes would suffice). Then connect the battery again and try to charge once again using a USB charger, the type you plug into the wall. Do not use a PC USB port for charging since it simply cannot provide sufficient charging current for a completely drained battery.

[Q] nook w/o firmware ?

Hi,
last week I was in US and bought a NST. First start at home .... nothing . Screen leaves initial content.
After a lot of test from a lot of boards e.g hold buttons for a long time and so on - I gived up.
Today I found this forum. Some threads talking about serial interfaces on board with boot screen....
My hope is coming back to make the nook alive.
My location is Germany. I will not exchange my nook at B&N - I want to find the problem.
- Without battery the nook shows also the green led on bottom but no reaction on power button.
- While connecting to my Windows-PC I can see that the device manager sometimes see a OMAP3630
for a really short time.
- My Knowledge in Linux is not bad but Hardware is a 'red blanket' (we say in german - means: less than zero).
My current Idea is to prepare nook with an serial interface to see boot messages. After this it should easier to
find the problem.
No my question:
What I must du to connect a serial Adapter to my nook ? Is it enough to put cables on right pins on board ?
Also welcome any other idea .
Thank you
Serial interfaces are fun, but the Nook's capability of booting up on the SD card is the easiest way.
Put noogie on an SD card, boot up and see what the problem is.
Try to save your /rom partition.
Put ClockWorkModRecovery on an SD card.
Put an Nook update image on the Nook and update.
Good idea

Hi 'Renate NST',
I tried to boot with noogie.img. But it is the same - my nook will not change the screen.
At bottom of nook is an 'green' LED is nook is connected to PC or power adapter. But if I remove USB cable this LED is off. If I then press
power button it leaves off. Is this normal ?
A new idea is welcome now .
Thank you
What is the screen showing exactly?
Does it say "Rooted Forever"?
Does it ever flash or show any change?
You've tried pushing the power button for 20 seconds?
The green (or orange) LED is only on with the charging cable connected.
It might be that you have gotten your Nook wedged.
Others have reported this, although I've never seen it.
You can take your Nook apart, disconnect the battery and reconnect it.

* Since I have opened the original B&N case. It never started until now.
* yes , 20 seconds ... done - no changes ( also in combination with 'n' button )
* disconnect battery I have already tried - no changes
a live sign ?
Hi,
Today I tried something I have read in a old other thread.
....
- disconnect battery
- connect usb power cable
- plug in battery while usb cable is connected
Now my nook show some live signs via led.
If I press the power button the led shows for a short time after ca. 2 seconds a red state.
Then it falls back and shows a green state.
If I hold the power key it goes red after ca. 20 seconds. Also only for a very short time.
What do you think - can it be a battery issue that my nook will not run ?
Oh, that's the factory screen.
Not good, it shows that your Nook never worked.
You're probably confusing u-boot.bin swapping batteries.
If the Nook gets some power (from somewhere) it starts booting.
It's u-boot.bin that checks for existence/status of the battery.
If it's unhappy it goes back to sleep.
It could be your battery.
If you have a friend with a Nook, try their battery.
If you were local, you could try my battery eliminator. :cyclops:
See: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2487055
Can you measure the battery?

I wonder, is your problem that your nook is just simply completely discharged; if it is then it will do very little.
Leave it charging for a good 5 hours+ and then hold the power button down for 10seconds+ - now see if you get any life?
second battery is now empty

After changing the battery I plugged the nook on power to charge it. After 8h I stopped charging and I was able to start nook. I have registered and played a little bit with nook.
The battery state was 78%. Next night I charged it again. Orange LED was on but nook started in the morning with 70%.
I used the nook the hole day and now I see a screen that my battery is empty and I have to charge.
If i connect a cable I see on nook screen a charging symbol - but nook does not charge. (LED is orange)
I think the charging eletronic is wrong. What do you think is a good next step ?
- Charge the battery external ?
- Try to repair the nook by myself (I hope anybody can assist) ? Has anybody done such problem before ?
- Use nook without battery (I think there is an article howto prepare a nook to run without battery)
thank you
We've got a few variables here:
Did the new battery make a difference?
Did it pretty much just come in charged, got used up, never charged back?
What is your charging device, are you sure that it is good?
Does the charge light never turn to green?
Take a look at my UsbMode.apk
Does it show that the regulator is enabled?
What does the current limit show?
Does pushing the "1.5A" button make a difference?
It would be nice to measure current into the USB connector.
It would be nice to measure the voltage on the two batteries.

Switching to ART and got the Red Light of Death

Hi there,
Yesterday I decided to dive into ART just to see what the differences may be. I ran into some trouble. I got it fixed but thought I would share my experience in case it may help someone else.
What I'm running:
Nexus 4 (mako) with Faster binned chip
Purity Rom 11/27
Franco Kernel 195
SuperSU 1.65
CWM Recovery
When I decided to switch to ART I had about 70% battery remaining. I did the switch and the phone rebooted to change over the lib. The phone booted as it would normally and was optimizing applications. I noticed that the phone had got really hot when I picked it up to check it. The screen was off at that point and I could not get it to turn on.
I connected it to a USB charger and I got a flashing red light. Crap. I followed the guides out there which advised holding Vol Up and Power for 60 seconds, releasing, and connecting power. I let it charge for over an hour as prescribed. This did not resolve my issue. I tried a few different chargers of varying output and found that the lower powered chargers gave me a blinking red light (trouble indicator, I believe) and my new iPad charger would give a solid red light (charging from a very low battery indicator). It still made no difference in booting however.
If I held down the Vol Up and Power and connected a lower powered USB charger I could get to fast boot which led me to believe that the system board was not fried. When I disconnected the power while in fastboot the phone would switch off. Seems that somehow a fuse (electronic I'd guess, I'm not an electrical engineer) was keeping the battery from powering the system board.
To resolve the issue I had to open the phone, disconnect the battery ribbon, wait 10 seconds and then reconnect it. Fired right up after that.
To open the phone you'll need a t-5 torx screwdriver, a non-marring pry tool and a small phillips head screwdriver.
Hi,
Thank you for your solution. I have the same problem and I couldn't fix it through flashing a factory image. I am confused though. Do you know why the problem is fixed by reconnecting the battery cable? I'll try whenever I get the tools to open the phone and I'll post back if it worked or not!
tommyboy76, got same problem, but fixed it by waiting about 2 hrs with "dead" phone, I didn't connected charger until it chilled down. Then after I connected charger and everything seems OK. It charged and turned it on as always.
I think it is an overload protection built in.
