So...i couldn't find any topic here with a list of messaging applications(I send a lot of sms's daily so im always looking for alternatives) so i figured why not make one and maybe other users could point me out to the ones i dont know about. Here goes the list of the ones i know and have used:
- go sms pro ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jb.gosms&hl=en )
When it comes to theme support and functionality this one is probably the best, but it also is bloated and kinda slow sometimes=/
- Pansi sms ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pansi.msg&hl=en )
Probably one of the fastest sms apps i have used, but the UI is kinda dull
- Handcent ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.handcent.nextsms&hl=en )
Can't remember much about this one because i only used it for a little while
- Chompsms ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.p1.chompsms&hl=en )
Same as handcent
-Messaging Metro Beta ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zapnus.messaging )
This one has a lot of potential! An awesome WP7 UI but unfortunately you have to pay to get some features like system notifications=/. And sometimes it lags a bit
- Messaging 7 ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.np.wp7msg&hl=en )
An awesome WP7 UI with very good animations (better animations than Messaging metro) but unfortunately they lag=/
If you know more please share!
I've used a lot of those and frankly I keep falling back to the stock SMS app. With the new dev features that have been added to it in most ROMs it covers really all the needed basis except for maybe person specific notifications.

The one in black bean 5 can be customized by the user. If I remember correctly the1dynasty helped with it.

Hello dear community!
Our CM7 stands in the wings and most of us are reporting bugs to CyanogenMod.
But apart from the bugs, there are other things that could be improved.
I noticed for example in the SMS app, that there is no way to force the line break through the return key has been replaced by the key for emoticons.
Okay, what's the problem, are now some thinking.
You can use a different keyboard or simply another SMS app such as handcent. Well, would not be a problem, but honestly - who would not like to have everything from one source?
I'm really pleased so far with CM7, the stock keyboard is better than Swiftkey or Smart Keyboard Pro and i like the stock SMS-App much more than other alternatives from the market.
Here my request to you:
Issue 2898 - CyanogenMod - Enhancement: Swap Smilie-/Returnkey in Stock Messaging App - Project Hosting on Google Code
Give the project a star, if you also like to have the line break back and if not, still give the star that does not hurt you and increases the chance that the project is implemented.
The whole was unfortunately already tried, but it has been there for more than 8 months and only 3 people starred this. I hope this time on more resonance, especially by the large community here. This is why i've opened this thread.
With best regards
Olli
Starred. I find this terribly annoying too as I never use the emoticon button but frequently want a line break.
Is there a way for toggle "android:inputType="textShortMessage"" ?
I've just decompiled mms.apk and deleted those lines from
..\res\layout\compose_message_activity_black and ..\res\layout\compose_message_activity
then compiled again and now i've got the returnkey back.
But that's only a workaround, can this be put into a option?

Ok let's keep it constructive... This annoys me limitless too. Is there a workaround meanwhile?
Just wondering, I love the reports of a better battery life but all the other bugs would just get the best of me.
i am running beta 2.3.3 roms and they have no issues for me.
I wish I had waited and just rooted beforehand... now I can't root and it's a buggy phone

Well after reading the community forums at sprint.com and android forums, Ive seen people getting different results/bugs such as:
-Netflix stopped working(posted on this forum)
-Other Misc applications not functioning
-Shortcut icons appearing default with no detail
-Voicemail notification continuously appearing with no voicemails
-GPS Icon appearing even when the GPS is turned off
-Text messages taking longer to send
-Calls not connecting
Im sure there is more but these are the ones that caught my eye.
So thats why I was waiting to make sure there isnt another update to fix some of these issues.
Not having Netflix after getting a taste sucks the most
I can say that my gps icon is on and it shows off on the top. Text messages show a number when there are none. Great I updated and now I cant root.
I waiting until the bugs are fixed,
Not updating till then.
Waiting on root also

+1 (Except that part about root, since there are already rooted OTA's)
Or until Synergy is finally released.
O wow, actually just replaced my evo through sprint. they sent me a brand new one, in an envelope(no accesories) thank god I have been living with a buggy refurb for almost a year.
Only problem is it is preloaded with 2.3!?!?!? the sprint rep said it was funny also 2 other customers received brand new ones, thats unheard of from sprint IMO
maybe they want to make everyone on 2.3 because so many using the wifi hotspots...idk
so I would have redone the universal root method like I did before hand, but read here first ......so no go on universal root?

This. How did they even find about xda & why are they still here lol
It seems like Android Central would be a better fit...
The icons in folders not appearing is fixed by a fast boot.

Runs smooth no problem. I wish they upgraded sense it would make the phone more Customizable. But, I'm running on mik 2.1 3.0 sense it's a great rom try it out your self.

It's called "gaining knowledge, keeping informed, and keeping the options open". Some people, do not necessarily wish to modify every device they use, at every single opportunity. Since discovering XDA, I have had 6 or 7 different devices, and though I have not flashed a custom ROM to each one of them, I've done a couple. Flashing or not, this entire forum has helped me in some form with each device.

Seriously, I guess you'd have to ask yourself, "how did I find out about XDA?", in order to answer that. At one time, everyone on these forums was a stock user. The second part of your question is answered above.

I was running Mik 1.3 for a few days and upgraded to 1.4 yesterday. From the above, only two apply on this rom: The Netflix & the GPS icon. The GPS works, but in my case, it appears as off whether I have it on or off. The NetFlix problem is an issue that NetFlix is working on and not a "bug" of GB. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I read that somewhere on here when the problem first came up.
Having 2.3.3 and Sense 2.1 grealy outweight those two bugs for me. Out of all the 2.3.3 roms I've tried, this one has been my favorite by a long shot. You just have to set up the phone properly. It took me a good couple of hours to format the SD card and upgrade the ext3, transfer all the files back and forth from the SD card, restoring all my apps and reorganizing my phone, etc.
Well worth it, IMO.
The only issue I have noticed is my Exchange inbox icon sometimes shows that I have a new/unread email when I don't. Besides that, everything is working faster and smoother. The battery life improvement is by far the most dramatic change, imo. One more thing that I personally like is the message received notification toggle is now the first option under message settings...def makes shutting off the notifications faster, which is good when you need to hide new texts from the gf
I have a family member who was talked into purchasing a Nexus S by a Sprint salesperson. They were coming from a Blackberry so Android was quite a shock. At first they liked the phone as it was really fast and did so many more things than the old BB.*
*
However, as they started talking to other Android users, they figured out they they really wanted their facebook contacts to sync or they wanted to be able to type in more than 160 characters in a text message.
*
And of course their 30 days have passed and they will need to wait another 2 years before Sprint will give them another deal.* I know there are 3rd party apps for texting and to sync the facebook contacts, but I am not sure that is for them.
*
So here*are my questions - What options do they have?* Should I have them pick up a used Evo or Epic*off of eBay?*
*
I hear a lot about "rooting" here, but I am a newbie and I have no idea how that works.* Would that be good for them?*
*
If rooting works - can someone point me to a tutorial that explains how to do it (for a Nexus S)?
*
I want to help them but I need some advice.
Thanks in advance!

If you want facebook sync there is an App in the market called facebook sync. I haven't tried it out yet so I can't give my opinion. The other thing you can do is to root the phone and flash(install) a custom rom. Cyanogenmod7 and miui both have facebook sync. A for the text limit I don't really know much about it because I mainly do short texts. I do know that miui splits the text for you when send it out. I don't know if that is what the person wants lol.

Oh yeah for rooting the phone it is really easy. All you have to do is download the 1 click root method and it is really one click and your done. Instuctions come in the zip file. You can also return the phone to stock just as easy, there is a 1 click unroot method

First off if u need to ask what rooting is you don't need to do it. Not trying to be mean just saying
Second, app it up there are a million apps ive added apps to sync fb photos(once and done), an app for visual voicemail(once and done), .. What IM saying is you can make the phone do anything thats the joy of android, alot of apps are just easy set up and they do their thing never worry about again..
Experiment, try an app like it keep it, don't delete it... The phone has plenty of space.. Down the road if they want more freedom then look into rooting, read up on it make the decision and then there is a ton of help already here and you'll know what your looking for

I didn't know what root was this time last year, now I can root my refrigerator with my eyes closed I think everyone starts somewhere and a nexus is a good place to start.
I wouldn't switch to an evo or epic because they are essentially gonna have the same features as the nexus. There are a ton of people here that would be more than happy to help you make your family members first Android experience more enjoyable. Whether it be installing handcent to split 160 or whatever, people will help. .

Thank You for the advice. I will try to find some apps to get the phone to act the way they want.
My first two Android phones were the Epic 4g and now the Evo 3D. I feel kinda lucky that my phone has always been how I want it right out of the box.

Tim Hutt (from this forum) has done a great job of packaging the standard ICS launcher, sms app and calendar and sticking them on the market. You can get them here: (original thread)
Launcher, Calendar, Messaging
I've also removed that horrible chatON. Go to settings and click on Application Manager, click on the All tab, then find and click on chatON. Click on Force Stop and Disable. This will stop it appearing on the lock screen. The same thing can be applied to all Samsung bloatware, such as backup, account, software updates, etc.
This solution has turned out to work really well for me as I actually some of the new features on the phone, such as the motion bits, and the water unlock.
The dialer is the only thing that gets on my nerves still so if anyone has any way to get the original, do tell.
And if you also get annoyed by the icons and want the original ICS ones, get the ICS icons from here, and get QuickShortcutMaker.
You can now make shortcuts to the camera, dialer etc but use the original icons. It's anal I know, but I like what I like
Root your phone and use titanium back up then delete what you want

After tinkering around with a few AOSP/AOKP ROMS this weekend, I have come to the conclusion that the Touchwiz phone app sucks! It requires way too many taps to make a call from your favorites list, and is ugly as **** compared to CM10.1's. I would honestly like to continue using AOSP rather than TW, but since bluetooth is not quite working just yet, I've decided to continue using TW for the time being. I would really like to know if there is a way to get rid of the default phone app and replace it with a superior one. Any suggestions on how to do this?
