sync music via zune - HD2 Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting an

Hi there ..
I have a problem with my device. Actually i dont really know if its because of my device or my fault.
I have a mp3 playlist on my computer. Its synced via dropbox to my work computer.
When i try to use my playlist at work, the file never works. Its because the playlist also stores the exact location info,
Not only "be my lover.mp3" it stores as "c:/be my lover.mp3" format.
So my work computer does not have a be my lover mp3 in its C, it never playes.
I remember that in the beginning of mp3 times, i did save playlist files and they always worked in other folders, i could move my albums as folders and i had no problem with that. Now if i move my album folder, the playlist would not work because of false references..
BTW when i try to sync "be my lover.mp3" format (no exact location info) playlist, my hd2 wont accept it..
Is there a way to make my playlists work somehow?
How are you guys doing this??
What format are you using for zune playlists..
I only have 2 playlists on the locations that i'm defining on my zune, bu unfortunately zune never recognises one of them.
I'm using Aimp
Hope this helps..

If i do my playlist this way, i will lose all my playlists on my computer when i format it.
And it will be impossible for me recover them anyhow.
I am creating my playlists using AIMP (winamp-like player).
I'll tell you how i do it.
I'm going to settings, collection, i press manage for the music folders to be synced..
And selectioning my new folder that i have just prepared with its playlist exported via AIMP.
Right now i have 4 folders marked over there.
My music, public music (which actually are not important at all), playlist1 and playlist2.
My zune starts to process the files inside the folders and then in my collection i can see that playlist1 is in the playlist tab..
Playlist2 is not recognized.. so that i cannot drag and drop it to my device...
Playlist1 is drag and droppable! if ıyu want to delete the playlist including the songs all you have to do is unselect the playlist1 in your settings, collection, manage option..
Why??? i have no idea..
For external playlist support please look here
I tried both PLS, M3U and AIMPPL...
There should be a way.

OK folks, i've just found the way..
And thats easy one...
I'm gonne post a new tutorial for that later
It would seem to be a little "exploring Americas the second time" but i'm so much sure of that a lot of you guys dont know it...

Use Winodows Media Player to Sync: Music, Playlists and Pictures

Windows Media Player (WMP) is a great application and works great for syncing to the Android platform.
The Music and Pictures application on the Android work with the file structure and playlists from WMP. It is an easy solution for managing content on your computer and having it sync automatically.
Benifits of using WMP to sync content
Sync Auto Playlists and User Created Playlists
Sync Pictures with options to resize to save space. (keeps folder hierchy for easy browsing)
You can reserve space so WMP does not eat all of the usable storage
You can prioritize your synced content giving you control over fresh content, or managing your favorites.
Sync 4 and 5 star Rated pictures and music from your computer
Examples of use:
Sync Pictures added to your computer in the last 30 Days
Sync You favorite songs first, then by playlist, and then fill the remaining space with the rest of you library and you can still leave room for other reasons like pictures taken from the G1
Researching the following:
WMP can convert and resize certain video formats and TV recorded from Media Center to a mobile sized WMV. I am researching to see if WMP can be tweaked to use another format and resolution
WMV playback on Android/G1
I have read alot of questions from users about media management. I wanted to start this thread as an awareness for using WMP to manage content. I see alot of G1 users feel like the link between the computer and android is not there. I think it is designed for an open platform, so you don't have to use one app for everything (i.e. Active Sync, itunes, ect.)
Moderators: please feel free to delete or redirect if this thread is out of place.

How to Setup Windows Media Player (WMP) to sync to the G1
This guide is designed for Android version R29 or later and the use of a Micro SD or SDHC card already installed in the device.Earlier Android releases have different steps in mounting the device to the comptuer and are not in this guide.
1. Connect the Device to the Computer via USB Cable
A Notification will appear in top bar. Slide down the curtain and select the notification labeled "USB connected". Select the "Mount" option.
2. Open Windows Media Player on the Computer
Make sure you are on the "Library" tab of WMP, if not select it. If your device is properly installed and connected, your memory card should be listed on the left pane and would be titled based on how you formated the card or set by the manufacturer. [See Figure (1) Attached Below]
3. Right Click on the memory card from the left pane and select "Setup Sync..."
[See Figure (2) Attached Below]
4. Name your device and click finish
Choose a name that will be easily recognizable for your convienence. If you are using multiple cards, you can setup different media to be synced to each card.[See Figure (4) Attached Below]
5. Right Click on the memory card from the left pane and select "Setup Sync" and choose "Sync this device automatically"
In the list on the right remove playlists that you do not want to sync to your device. You can add more playlists by selecting the "Available Playlist" drop down box and select "Sync Playlists". This section will allow you to sync your picture library and possibly video and tv in the future (not availble yet). [See Figure (8) Attached Below]
Set your Priorities: Change the priority list that sync to your preference. If you have "All Music" at the top fo the list, all of your music will sync first until the card is full. If the card is not full it will move to the next sync list and so on. I recomend syning your favorites of each categories and then use sync All Music or All pictures last. See reserving space note to leave room on your card.
Click Finish when done and device starts to sync.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
How To Set Conversion and Space limits
Right Click on the memory card from the left pane and select "Advanced Options" to set quality preferences
A - On the sync tab: if you leave the "Create folder Hierarchy on the device" select it will sync over pictures and music in the same folder layout as it is on your computer. If you uncheck this box all files will be placed into one folder. Pictures are harder to browse on the device if you choose this option because they are all grouped into the main picture folder.
To Reserve space: you may want to reserve space so that your synced content does not take all of the space available on your memory card. Move the slider to the right to reserve space in 5% increments. If you are unable to move the slider you must stop any current syncing. [See Figure (10) Attached Below]
Note: To Stop a sync in process, close or cancel the open window and right click on the memory card in the left pane of WMP and select "Stop Sync" [See Figure (9) Attached Below] B - On the Quality Tab: if you leave the "Convert music, pictures, videos and TV shows as required by this device" selected, the computer will resize images down to save space. Uncheck this box if you want the full resolution version of the image which will take up more space. You can also set the quality of the music by checking "Select maxium quality level" and setting the max bitrate for songs to be synced.
Note: Video and TV are not supported at this time and is not an option that you can select.
Click Apply and then OK when finished.About Playlists on the Device
You can create as many playlists as you wish. Note that the “Recently added” playlist is a system playlist and cannot be deleted or renamed. Also, if you make any voice recordings as part of a MMS message, they will be stored automatically in a playlist called “My recordings”. Supported Playlists: Playlist formats supported are M3U, WPL, and PLS. WPL is the Windows Media Playlist format and is the default format that WMP saves to. This playlist file will sync to your device if saved in the Playlist folder on the computer.

WMA Metadata:
Which tags/data is not bieng recognized? 99% of my music is in MP3 format, so I have not run into this problem yet.
About Cover Art for MP3s:
Cover art is recognized for 80% of my music. I believe it because the android sees cover art that is embeded in the metadata and not reliant on the folder.jpg placed in each album folder.
Note:
After you initially sync, open up the Andoid's Music player and choose Albums. Let the Andoid update/find/process cover art for a couple of minutes and make sure you keep the device awake. Don't switch to another application or it will stop processing the cover art.

Thanks for the great detail.
I have started to use media player as my primary music app since installing media center. Syncing with media player and my G1 is something I forgot about.

When I open the music player in the phone and select albums, I get a list of albums without the cover art being displayed ( I have the phone set on never timeout). How long does it take for the cover art to be displayed? I let it sit for several minutes and it hasn't done anything. Do I have to initiate the update process or is it supposed to be automatic?
Not sure if this will help/work, but I've had a bit of experience working with getting mp3s with cover art in WMP.
I find the easiest way is to update the albums in WMP using the 'Find Album Info' option. This should pull art/track info from the web and alter the embedded art and id3 tags. It can be a bit hit and miss sometimes (occasionally the art/tags won't update properly).
You should also be able to drag/drop the art (folder.jpg etc) into WMP when sorted by album.
Syncing it after this should then push out any changes.
(my G1 is arriving tomorrow, so won't be able to confirm if this works 'til then)

You should see the artwork start to appear one by one, if you don't see this happening it might be the way the cover art is setup in your library.
(EDIT: when I says start to appear, I mean about every second as soon as you open in Album view. If you leave it in this mode and let the device fall asleep it will still update the cover art, just don't open another application on top of that or it will stop. Scroll around and see if it is updating, it should be very apparent if its working)
We are all new to this so alot of my reasoning is just speculation at this point. The artwork that shows on my G1 is cover art imbeded into the mp3 file and not a jpg in the album folder.
Let me know if this helps.

i need of real help
i have read threw your post and its help full but what has happened is that my phone use to sync even my play list from media player, but now its only syncing the songs and not the playlist can you help?
Although I am completely against Microsoft and feel it is wrong to sync the almighty Android with microcough, it actually does work really well. I stole a bunch of music from a friends computer and was surprised how easy it was to sync with, a lot easier than ipod/itunes. Too bad I run Fedora on my laptop (well not really "too bad" but you get the point).

I have the same problem. All my playlists, both normal and smart playlists, are in my Playlists folder. But unlike what the instructions say, the playlists themselves will not sync to the G1. I can add a playlist to my automatic sync list and songs on that playlist will be synced, but the playlist file and the playlist itself will not sync. Any ideas about how to get playlists to sync between WMP and Android?
i have had issues with the cover art as well. i ripped a lot of my CD with wmp and it found the album art just fine, but when i loaded them to the sd card on the phone they never came with it. i also had a lot of music that was downloaded years ago that i put on and it is terrible for listing them in any sort of order even after redoing a lot of the tags. its not that great in my opinion and would be better if it would browse by folder like i have it on the card

I have the same problem. Syncing playlists with windows media player only add the songs onto the phone, not the playlists themself. I solved this problem by copying my playlist folder on my computer onto the memory card. Everytime you sync playlist with WMP, make sure you copy the actually playlists from your music folder onto your memory card too.
This is really stupid. Syncing playlists and it only puts the songs onto your memory card and not the actually playlists. I mean, WTF dude?

I'll try this, but on my phone, it actually synced the playlists as well... the only problem is that when I tried to play the playlist on the device, it can't find any of the files! I have to manually play them.

To the best of my knowledge, WMP uses .asx or .xml and Android can only read .m3u. Am I missing something, 'cause I'd LOVE it if syncing lists with WMP was as simple as all that.
Just picked up the Samsung Capitivate a couple of weeks ago. I'm a heavy playlist user as this is how I manage my various Podcasts daily to keep them playing in the order received. First thing i did was sync up my Android device with WMP as that's what i've been accustomed to for years now. I'm a recent WM convert.
Syncing is just as straight forward as any other media device as far as i can see. Playlist, album art, mp3 and unprotected wma are syncing. However my playlist are synced in reversed order for some reason. anyone else seen this?
HTC, Motorola, and Samsung all have options to sync with WMP that will also allow the syncing of playlists... but if you mount just as a "Mass Storage" device, then the playlists will not sync properly.
A work-around is apparently to copy your playlists folder to the Music folder on your SDCard... testing it shortly and will let you know.
If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know!

Loading Music Files

Hi all,
This may be a dumb question but as a "newbe" to he HD can someone tell me the correct method and or directory structure required when copying music files to the storage card? I tried puting them in Music/"album name"/ but my HD did not find them. I followed the manual and used actisync and WM11 but it still did not work. Have done a hard reset as after trying these two methods the original two songs did not show either. Any help would be appreciated.
You need to add the Music Tracks to the Windows Media Library - once you've copied the files across onto the Memory Card (it really doesn't matter on the Directory Structure) go into Windows Media - it normally takes you straight to the Library - then from the Menu select "Update Library ..." and wait a while.
Many thanks
Hi Paul,
Thanks for the quick response, I new it had to be something simple.
Adding Music to TF3D music player.
Hi there,
I was struggeling with the same thing.
Remove; Application Data\HTC\HTC Album\AudioManager_Eng\'Audiomanager_Eng.vol' and softreset.
If you can't remove this file softreset first and try again.
After the file is removed and a softreset is done TF3D will add your music automatically to the library when you scroll to the today music player.
It is music/artist/album.
You might want to get a small piece of software on your PC to check the music ID tags. I had alot of problems to start with and found that deleting the album no and comments gave no problems.
You dont have to use active sync through WMP11. You can simply use the explore on active sync to find your music folder and then drag and drop.
To delete audiomanager.exe you will have to disable touchflo.
I'm having the same problem with the TouchFlow3D media player. However I don't seem to have the folder structure you mention. I have ...
"Application Data\HTC\HTC Album" but there's no "AudioManager_Eng" folder. My "AudioManager_Eng" folder is located at "Application Data\HTC\AudioManager_Eng" and in there I DO NOT have "Audiomanager_Eng.vol".
Any other suggestions?
Thank you,
Mike
1. if you add a lot of music files it will take a long time for your HD to find them. a very long time!
2. to test, start with 1 or 2 albums in mp3 format
3. take care that each of the mp3 files to have the same album name on the Id Tag
4. on your card you can have any structure. i use something similar to my PC: music/artist/album
5. you can add a picture (artwork) within the respective folder for each album and it will be displayed on the tf3d player (the name should be folder.jpg for each picture)
if you respect these steps for sure it will work. you can also use s2p and the albums pictures will look very cool when you wil slide them
good luck!
Any update on this? Mine doesn't work..
Help!
I don't know what's wrong with my HTC Diamond. I got the Sprint version. It was working fine until a few days ago. Everytime a play a song on the TF3D player, it plays the songs, but then it stops the songs halfway thru, and then it wont continue playing unless I restart the whole song. I tried doing the Hard reset, soft reset, follow the steps above and it still does the same thing. On the WM player, they work fine, but not on the TF3D player. Pls help

How to correctly upload songs to HTC HD2

Hi all
Uploading songs to HTC was a messy affair initially.Following are the lessons i learned the hard way.Hope these may come handy for a new user of this amazing phone:
Mistake 1:First i created a folder in Storage Card-->Music-->English and uploaded around 500 songs into it.The result was that the music player took ages to load and was extremely sluggish.
Lesson learned:Never upload more than few(20-25) songs in a single folder.
Mistake 2:Next i used Windows Media Player to sync the music with HD2.The syncing was super fast with songs automatically organized into artist folders.Neat.But wait, when i opened my music player, the albums were blank. The songs where there all in the storage card but some how the music player was unable to read them.
After many unsuccessful tips gathered from net,i finally solved this by copying all files from HD2 back to my PC and pasting them back to Storage Card-->Music-->English (of course after deleting all files from there first)
Lesson learned:Never sync with Windows Media Player(this also leads to few other problems)
Mistake 3:Use ID3v2.4 UTF-8 in Mp3tag.When i did this,HD2 was unable to show the album/file cover art.
Lesson learned:Use ID3v2.4 UTF-16 to tag the files if you want the album art displayed.
Why not use Automatic album art update?:The Automatic album art update in HD2 works like a charm but it always go for the lowest quality image.
Finally:
This is how i upload music files to get the album art display correctly:
Tag files with Mp3tag using ID3v2.3 UTF-16 (Tools-->Tags-->Mpeg.Check ID3v2.3 UTF-16 in "Write".Leave other options unchanged).
Active Sync HD2.
Explore-->My Windows mobile based device-->Storage Card-->Music.
Create a artist named folder in Storage Card-->Music-->English (or any other name of your choice).
Just copy and paste the song/songs of your choice into this.
It works just fine for me
Hope u too will find this useful !!!
very useful post thanks for sharing
should be made a sticky because it is actually a very common problem
thanks again
right no offence here but surley my method is easier, if your tracks are tagged properly which most peoples are create folder on storage card called music, i have mine like this
storage card >band name>album
pop them on the card.
album art rename the picture in the album to folder.jpg
works simple
I must be lucky. Never had a problem using Windows media Player to sync music to my HD2. Works flawlessly syncing to my MicroSD card. No extra steps required. Album art transfers fine for me too but I have noticed that the Update Album Art feature does sometimes provide better quality features.

over 60gig's worth of music is album art tagged (mp3 tag) and levelled out (mp3 gain) on my pc and using sync is sweet for me. after uploading an album to my phone i always refresh the sync button though as i once bricked my phone after putting 20 albums on all at once...

I have to completely dissent
The only sane way is trashing the builtin eye-candy media player and disable its tab, install mortplayer and copy your music over, wherever and however you prefer, then simply add it and press play
It's not like you're watching the animation of albums and songs passing by when you listen to your MP3s, you're most likely keeping it in your pocket with the display off.
If that's only for the sake of impressing friends, you may just keep the music tab and use it with 10 songs to show off the graphics
well, using a 3rd party software is the easiest way out....but i want to use the default player with full features on.
Also I want to see the album art while selecting a song and it completes the experience....nothin 2 do with impressing friends.
In btwn,Mortplayer indeed is a good player..... I liked GSplayer too...

So if I'm reading your instructions right, I have to create a folder of each artist then transfer the music over? Even if I do that which takes a lot of time, when you transfer the music over using activesync it tries to reformat the songs and that could take forever. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks, I'm brand new to WinMo.
I think to make the transfer of the files faster, use a card reader, load all the songs on the memory card, pop it back in, and off you go.

ok then, I stand corrected you alone can decide what you want your phone to be doing Me, I tried using manila player, but gave up after couple minutes, realizing that it just picked up the mp3s at its own leisure without me being able to control it in any way. Another manila tab off the hook
so i simply cannot put all my music into storage card>Music? i have to make new folders within music folder of each band name and album?? i guess my question is.. whats changed?? from touchflo 3d to sense??
because i uploaded my music just like that... on ym fuze.. and everything worked perfectly... and it was all under the music folder. no individual band names necessary... so did they change up something or what??

How is removing the SD card, load the songs then pop it back in different from connecting the phone to the computer and selecting the Disk Drive option instead of ActiveSync? Also, do you have to remove the back cover of the phone, not the batter cover, to remove the SD card? I had a hard time trying to pull that sucker out. Thanks.

I checked the the Media box is checked. It got stuck at 89% transferring so disconnect the phone, connect using Disk Drive, delete everything under the Music folder and I am going to retry again. I have also put a movie under the Video folder but I couldn't locate it anywhere. I tried Pictures & Video, I tried looking at the document folder, nada...sigh.

keep the media box unchecked.otherwise the folder will be formatted each time u active sync with pc.
if u find it hard to create artist named folders on your own, sync using media player;it will do the job for you.But then sense music player may not detect the songs. If that's the case, try opening a single song with file explorer or phone media player.then soft reset.the songs may appear.for me it dint work as i mentioned in the first post.so i copied all folders in "music" to pc and deleted the folders in "music" and re pasted the folders to "music" from pc.

OK. I followed nessqn's instruction and all the songs are there along with the album arts. But it freezes everytime I go to Music. I have to take out the battery or do a soft reset. Is it because it's trying to compile the library therefor it's slow?

A way to manage music and playlists on wm (HD2)

I think that a post like this must be done, because I can't find anything right, and i have read many other people questioning about :
my device HTC HD2 Leo must be the best mp3 player!
-2 days ago I was thinking: yeah this hd2 is a great device, but to complicate to do some things and ecc.. I'm not a programmer, i can't do by myself I alwas have to wait to find solutions and twaeks.. even music, i can’t import a simple playlist.. i don't know.. I never try an iphone. Probably is simpler, it's almost a legend, it's firstly an ipod… At least music will be perfect... i will think about..
-yesterday i tried an iphone: i wanted just to test the music software, but i immediatly realized: Wow is this an iphone?!?! it seems a toys!!! and the music soft it's even less powerfull and functional then i was thinking! Always too enphasys on this object! it just slide well!... and i can't do anything different here..bhaaa
No matches, come proudly back on my wm hd2... !! at the end it really eats all other devices, and i have to solve his problem!..
Spending again time in serching, finally i found a way to manage music pc-device for good. yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!! more complex than expected, but damn, it works. As usuall for McGuiver’s breed\wm users .
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The first problem is the music software on pc, you can choose obviously what you want, tranfer just songs has no problem for all. The problem is playlists exporting in ALL cases. I want my (sorry it needs months) mood-auto-playlists, or 4-stars-upper or everithing else both on pc and device with the ability of playing them when i want..but…but…but.. nothing?!?!? Are you joking me?? it’s so strange I want it, without rebuilding all playlist on device?!? Not perfect sync pc-device and reverse device-pc..just my playlist on device when i sync..
unlucky, it ‘s so because of some issues in devices and pc software options ...
1: pc music software in my experience:
Windows media player 12: good default software but limited. Even if is the windows software, now it can't tag music, and syncing it's unable to export the playlist file on device, only songs. (i belive probably we will see a windows phone7 ad hoc software, there no answers to that strange support, probably they want to make wm7 more attractive..)
MediaMonkey: the best music managing player! and not only the best, if you really want to organize music in deep way, it's the ONLY allinone solution. but as for the hd2, you have to search and learn a lot on the net, I had many problems in first experience. In the end, it can do everything on devices and pc. There's just one problem, it exports well playlists(m3u) but on wm device with storage card they were ‘wrong’written. argh! (but now i can solve!)
Itunes: personally i don't like it, but it's a good manager. Nothing really better against the others, it’s just comfortable if you have an apple device. if you depend from it, you can find solutions like pocket tunes software, or else.. but why when i have MM, and many software music player device?
Winamp, foobar, vlc.. they where appreciated software too, but for me MM still does everything better..
2: I conclusively choose MM. But how export well playlists? The problem remain that when I export a playlist, MM can’t recognize the songs file path written in playlists. So you’ll have readable lists imported, without the right file association. If you look in playlists opening them with notepad, songs playlists path will be: music\artist\album\song ..instead of the right (for most device player) storage card\music\artist\album\ songs…
In these way the only device software able to read these ‘wrong’ playlists will be that great free software called S2p from A_C, that can be extended with S2U2too. It works well, and probably on any wm device, but in my opinion on my Hd2 I would like something even better if possible..
I took a look on other software, and even if they are not all free, they all have their + and -. Playlists are featured not so much and well too.. Between them I personally prefer these two:
Pocket Player: the best in general, scrolling ,playlist,nowplaying,ratings,albumart..
haven't tried with 10 gigs jet, but it’s really the most powerful, usable, music oriented one.. even if some things are still not perfect, I hope they will be fixed on 4.2 release. It reads M3U playlists and other.
Htc audio manager(manila/sense music tab): It’s the only one with that beautiful landscape mode. - : must be tweaked to scan the right folder on SD, navigation has not alphabet scroll, and at the end I think that PP works better, but it’s good and already installed. It reads just ASX playlists file.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Converting:
Everithing you choose, the important is to understand the right file format for playlists on your device player. HTC->asx, PP->m3u, others->…………. And converting will make you free
As said the only auto-exportable playlists files, seems to come only with MM, and being my player I’ll work with these. It ‘s stupidly complex, I have to admit, but … works! Hoping that someone in future could make it simpler (in MM or in wm devices, please!!):
After I sync device with MM importing mp3s and playlists files, written playlists’ songs path, as said, will be readable but wrong\incomplete for all player except s2p. And all the other players remain unusable in this way.
To solve, the only solution I found is to convert that file in working one, and you need two tools:
-m3uToAsxConverter (for pc) http://electron.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=29731
-and PlaylistManager (on device) i don’t remember link, sorry( Google it)
In this way, if you drag and drop the imported-device-not-working-m3uplaylist-file ( that has not ‘storage card’ write in paths) on m3uToAsxConverter.exe file. It will be converted automatically in an asx file (good for htc audio manager) with also the right path rewritten.
Now re-import manually the converted playlist on device, and open that with PlaylistManager.
If you want to insert it in HTC AM, go for file , save as HTCoption….
Or if you want it for others players, choose simply save as , for example in PP folder, and convert the asx file again in an m3u file.
Finally you’ll have all your playlists on device too, remembering ,thanks to McGuyver, to update them when something change on the pc library.
That’s so! Yhahuuuu
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hoping this could help others, I’m quite a newbie in Wm world, so I don’t know if all this is the best solution , but in all the time I spent searching about, this is the only working way..
Let me know if you discover\do something better please!

Thanks for taking the time to share. I just started looking for a solution to this today!
A simpler way?

The path in the .m3u is dependent on where you tell MM to save it. So I moved all my files to a folder in this path on the pc: "c:\storage card\music\ . . ."
Then I saved the playlist to the "c:\" and the playlist now includes the "storage card" part of the path. You don't have to put in root at c:\. I can go anwhere, but you have to save the playlist in the level above "storage card"
When I moved it to the HD2, it did not work! I saved a new song on the hd2 to the same playlist, moved it back to the PC to see why it would play, and not the songs saved by MM. It turns out that MM saves the path as "storage card\music\ . . ." It does not put in the initial '\" in the path. It should be "\storage card\music\ . . ."
So, now after I save the play list with MM to c:\
1. Open playlist with notepad
2. type Ctrl+H (Replace)
3. type "storage" in 'Find What'
4. type "\storage" in 'Replace with'
5. select 'Replace all'
6. save the file
7. sync to hd2
That's it. The file is on correct format with the full path. The point is to have identical paths to the music on both the hd2 and PC.
Hope this helps . . .
Strange behavior...

I use Windows media player to hold my music and playlist on my PC, i then make an auto sync of my HD2 with wmp for all my playlists and they all work perfect in sense?
my music AND my playlists on my PC gets transferred and recognized perfectly?!?
EDIT: by the way, for tagging my mp3's with information AND build in image witch also gets shown everytime in sense, i use NCH stamp id3 tag editor.. works like a charm

dogg,
Thanks for sharing. Could you please share versions of wmp on pc? ALso, what type of playlist (.asx, .m3u, etc) is created on PC? does it sync as-is, or converted to another type on hd2? Also, what is the folder structure of your music (and playlists) on both PC and HD2?
Thanks . . .
This is my solution for those who use Itunes and especially those who prefer to use the simplicity of the unix platform within the mac.
The software for syncing my music is called double twist which runs both on Mac or PC, this great piece of software recognises the HD2 straight away and imports everything from your itune library which you just copy to your SD card. It even now support itune s the Android Market for those that may want to port Android to their HD2 in the future when it becomes available.
Once you have connected your beloved HD2 a sync music panel appears with 2 options, sync all music or selected playlists, I use this section for only syncing my podcasts because that is the only thing that changes each week, this is how I do it;
1. Create a playlist in itunes called podcast
2. start up DT and go to library > music> source >itunes and select the podcast playlist you created
3. Now go to the file menu > library > add to library
4. Now the playlist will appear every time you connect and you just need to refresh this playlist which can be doe automatically in the preferences.
Every week I start up itunes and wait for it to finish downloading my subscribed podcasts and then drag them into my podcast playlist, after deleting the previous weeks podcast. Now just start up DT with HD2 connected and press the sync button and my podcasts are now on my my HD2
This solution is excellent for those who realised that owning a MBP running virtual box with windows 7, best of both worlds. This set up allows you to take advantage of the apple MBP and still be able to flash ROM's from the one set up.
<p><em>hope</em> this helps</p>

This is probably WAY too late, but as I had to sync my first WMP playlist to my HD2 today and ran into the same issues as everyone else before finally working out the secret, I thought I'd update this thread. Best of all, you don't need to download or convert anything, syncing does work as it is supposed to.
- First of all Restart both your computer and HD2 (this is a precaution and can't hurt).
- After making your playlist in WMP attach your phone via USB as normal. IMPORTANT: when your connection options appear, make sure you select 'Active Sync' and NOT 'Disk Drive' (even though this would be a faster transfer the playlists won't come across this way). Press Sync on WMP.
- After Sync in WMP is complete, make sure you ALSO 'Sync All' in Active Sync. This might take a while and may even create an error at the end. Don't worry. If you don't do this, you may find that even though the Playlists appear on your HD2, none of the Music actually plays.
- Launch your HD2 Player and let the scanning complete, but don't play anything.
- Unplug and Restart your HD2.
- Now (hopefully) your playlists will appear AND play.

Am I reading this thread correctly...
Does the HTC Sence player read .asx playlists only?
If so where does the playlist have to sit for the sense player to pick it up?
If I read this correctly should it go in the phone root?
If so I have a problem: I have placed one there and the sense player can't see it :-(
I am using MusicBee to create and export my playlists in.asx format. I can even get it to map the paths correctly from PC path to HD2 path so may have a simple working solution if I can just get sense to recognise the .asx file.
Any help on where I should locate the .asx file so that sense player will see it greatly appreciated.
I can't even find the ones that I have created manualy through the sense player itself!! WTF does sense do with them??
Regards
Clive
HTC HD2 playlist location and format
I have done some investigating. It appears that the audiomanager does NOT use ASX format playlists, but basically m3u style with just the path to each song, one song per line. The location of playlists is \Application Data\HTC\AudioManager_Eng\playlists
The tricky part seems to be that playlists are in a BINARY format. If you use Playlist Manager to convert a playlist for audiomanager, then copy that playlist from \Application Data\HTC\AudioManager_Eng\playlists you will be able to open it in Notepad and it appears to be an ordinary text file. In fact, you can add songs to it in notepad, save the file, copy it back to \Application Data\HTC\AudioManager_Eng\playlists and after a soft reset the playlist will have your new entries. However, if you were to copy and paste the text in that file to a new text file, copy that to the HD2 and soft reset the new playlist will appear empty.
Examining the files shows the playlists produced by Playlist manager are substantially bigger than an equivalent plain text file. A hexdump shows that each character is padded by a hex 00, and there is some extra stuff at the start.
In short, Playlist manager (http://mobisapienz.com/index.php?option=com_jdownloads&Itemid=82) is the way to go. Make plain m3u playlists (making sure the path is relative to your phone, not your pc, as described in other posts), open them in playlist manager and use it to export them to HTC audiomanager - then soft reboot.
BTW, playlists made this way can't be edited in the phone. Changes will be lost when you reset. Deleting them seems to be a bit tricky, too.
Edit: Playlists created on the phone are stored in a single binary file in \Application Data\HTC\AudioManager_Eng\AdioManager_Eng.vol

Samsung Playlists

Does anyone know how to sync a playlist file that the stock Vibrant Music play can actually read? I've tried everything I can think of such as:
1. Doubletwist
2. Samsung Kies
3. Sailing
4. Tunes Agent
5. Media Monkey
6. Windows Media Player
The default music player is not reading any playlist file formats created by those options. I've spoken with Samsung and TMobile and they couldn't offer an advice. This is terrible frustrating to me as the stock player is rather good.
I believe that the stock music player is only reading playlist files from a partition that we can't access as none that I've created are visible.
Thanks for the help.

Open doubleTwist > Playlists > select playlist

I'm pretty sure that the OP means creating a playlist that will then show up *as a playlist* in the Music Player app on the phone when it is synced with the music. Or for that matter just copied to the drive.
If someone has an answer, I'd be very interested, as I have a ton of different playlists I've created out of my collection that I'd prefer not to have to recreate on the phone from scratch.
I'm planning on using Banshee (in Fedora) to sync my music to the phone, I don't know if it will get any playlists across or not, but it doesn't sound like it.

I, too, am very interested in this. Creating playlists on my Vibrant is a pain. I want to be able to create them on my computer and then move/copy/something them into my Vibrant.
Playlists with iTunes
I not an apple fan but I do like iTunes as my music manager so this what I am currently doing. I have tried iSyncr and it works except it cost $2.99 and doesn't grab all the tags the way doubleTwist does. This method seems do do the same job as iSyncr except more manual work and time is required including not grabbing all the tag information so I guess I need to find a way to fix that someday :-( Nothing is ever easy.
Apps Needed:
iTunes Export http://www.ericdaugherty.com/dev/itunesexport/#Download
iTunes
Steps (Note you have to repeat the steps for each playlist):
Remove all media listed under the built-in playlist Recently Added in Samsung Music Player
Mount the phone to my computer
Run iTunes Export and select ( the ctrl or command key depending on OS to multiselect iTunes Playlists but with my method I do one at a time you will see why as you read on). I set the output to the mount that is the internal storage of my phone in a folder named MusicLib (name it to whatever you want). I also select Copy iTunes Structure under the Copy Files pull-down menu and all files under the File Types pull-down menu. Playlist is just m3u but I delete that file from the phone.
While it is running you may think the app crashed, but it hasn't just be patient. It will show a screen saying Playlist Exported when it is done.
Now eject the media from your computer and wait for the media scanner to finish
Open the Samsung Music Player and go the the Playlist Recently added, press menu -> "add to playlist" then "select all" -> "add"
Now you are at window that wants to create new playlist do it and finally select the playlist you just made and all the music you selected above will go into the playlist
This sucks I know but it is free and it works.
I discovered a way to get MediaMonkey to sync playlists with the Vibrant:
