yeah I sound stupid, usually you ahve to check in details the specs before buying device (I do own a TP2)
Anyway no IR port sucks... I like controling my home appliances with my phone and this si not possible with the TP2
Have the competing phones (iPhone, latts Acer, Xperia X2, N97, etc...) kept an IR port ?
*Edit* Sorry this thread should be in the General section of Rhodium, if someone could move it that would be better

In these day and age, mobile devices are excluding IrDA port already.. its pretty useless for file transfers.
Besides, if you are looking at remote controls, recent devices have only included lower class consumer IrDA ports. Which means they only function at very very short distances.. you are better off using your fingers on the buttons..
Hi, trolling in on the converstion here...
I have an old IPAQ PDA that came with a decent range IR port and stock Nevo Software.
It was awesome! I could control TV's, Videos, etc with it just by matching a code through trial and error.
I used to have great fun in shopping centre's turning off display tv's, then watching sales or demo people standing around scratching their heads as to why it would turn off or on or change the channels all by itself - hours of fun..!
Juvenile, yes - but lotsa fun.
Newer devices did shorten the IR range, which did make an IR port all but useless as a remote - shame, it was a handy thing to have with decent remote software like Nevo.
(Sometimes progress is not progress at all)
Cheers

I expected such models.. If the topic starter or anyone can name a few models which they had used the IrDA port with an effective range, I bet it would be old school PDAs.. Models in recent years have just really short ranged IR.
I also like the remote controling function.
I don't know why,for the designer, usually it's difficultly to carry out an useful funcation but easily to cut off an useful function.
Are there no Bluetooth to IR devices that would work?
No I've only seen a IR to Bluetooth devices on the market and that is the opposite of what your looking for it would be great if it was available. Somebody should put a request in to a developer who has experience with fabricating new hardware.
behold the solution to your problem!
no worries, I am working on a universal IR adaptor for phones, its coming along great; I killed my LEDs a while back so I had to wait for a new shipment and had problems with that, but delays aside, we are still set for a September release of our first products and delaying the boosted IR module to later this year (we will focus on software and regular rage IR instead).

Sorry Guys not a specific X10 question, but as an X10 owner I thought this would be a good place to pick your brains on Android tablets.
I'm Looking at getting an android Tablet to mount in the dash of my car for using as a sat nav, music player etc, There are alot of cheap 2.2 Android tablets for sale such as this Flat Pad one.
http://pcvision.co.uk/shop/product_...ium=product_search&utm_campaign=google-simple
Alot of them have USB ports for web cams etc, do any of you know if there are there any aps that would display the camera output so it could be used as a rear-view camera?
Can you plug in external HDD to the USB port so the memory could be expanded above 32GB supported limit for SD cards? (necessary if to be used as an in-car media center)
It also states "GPS Capabilities (when connected to wifi)" why would GPS not work without wifi?
Also listed is Skype. Is the android market different for Tablets. I know that skype mobile is coming soon for all android devices, but it seems that a version of skype is already out on Android Tablets.
Thanks in advance for your replies.
I didn't know such pad existed until you pointed out, so thx
From what I can tell from the description;
1. You can plug in external hdd
2. Android 2.1 not 2.2
3. The reason you need wifi for gps to work is because gps on android uses data, so you need wifi or it says you can hook up a 3g dongle, which makes more sense for using gps in car
If somehow you get this android tablet entertainment setup to work let us know and post some pics, would love to see them
Good luck!
If you are going to buy one, research it first. There are some very cheapo dodgy looking ones around, make sure it has good support and supports apps you need.

I know I have seen cameras that can connect to Android devices via bluetooth. Can't find them now, so might want to make sure they are available before getting the tablet.
You would need Wi-Fi with apps like Google Maps because it downloads the map as you're driving. Check in the market, there are apps such as Co-Pilot where all of the maps are pre-loaded, so you don't need an internet connection for navigation.
I'd wait for something like the Galaxy Tablet.
I bought a $110 7" Tablet (EKEN) out of curiousity Even with a lot of people customs rom to improve efficiency, they just suck. They're slow, poor battery life, tons of market issues and the screen response is poor. I'd wait for somethign reputable before throwing any money down.
I bought one made by Archos, its a 5 inch screen tablet. Cost me about $200 on Ebay but it has 1.6, Though it is a good product. it uses WIFI and is great for an internet tablet. I also think it has GPS built in, but cost money for the service.
Edit: I remember, not all archos 5 tablets are android. You have to make sure it says 'andriod'.
Imagine the idea of an xperia pad..........

Wait for the Notion Ink Adam, coming out Dec this year. The Pixel Qi display even allows reading in direct sunlight, which could be useful in a car.
I guess I need to do quite a bit of research first, prob best to wait untill they have been out for a while and there is a bit more info available. Battery wouldnt be an issue in car as it would be plugged in. When I do eventually get round to it I will be sure to post some pics.
Something that would be good for a tablet is an app that would let you run more than one app in split screen as there is plenty of screen space.
As announced, JB 4.2 will support miracast which allows display mirroring through wifi-direct. I donĀ“t understand whether this feature require certain hardware, and my question is wheter this will work on my 16 GB Nexus 7 when it is updated to 4.2? Anyone know?
Tegra 3 supports it and it uses wifi direct so I'm confident it will be supported.
Sent from my XT910 using Tapatalk 2
I hope that's true. All the hardware indicates it is able to support it, but not necessarily that it will actually be made available. The Nexus 10 doesn't have the option for Miracast, despite having WiFi direct/Android 4.2.
I don't get what all the worry about will it support it. The only hardware thing necessary is does the device have hardware encoding, and this does. Yes the N7 has wifi direct but ANY device could be upgraded to support wifi direct. It's not like wifi direct is some additional hardware on a wifi chip. Any wifi could technically support wifi direct.
So I would be really surprised if this doesn't support miracast. From what I've read the hardware encoder has a big influence on latency (as does the cpu). So one question that I would like answered is, how low is the latency? Movies/browsing etc doesn't really matter, but for gaming.
Has any article mentioned how low the latency is with miracast? This will vary from device to device of course, but even knowing for one device might give a ballpark of what to expect with the n7
I can't believe miracast is not supported by the N10! Mind boggling...
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
yes I just read that. Does it not have hardware encoding? The nexus 4 definitely has miracast enabled but not the nexus 10?!
Where is written that N10 doesn't support Miracast? I watched android developers hangout on YouTube a few days ago and if I remember correctly then they told both N4 and N10 support it. When someone asked about N7 they first told no, but then said they don't know for sure. Unfortunately YouTube is down, so I can't double check that at the moment.
Here:
Miracast is the Wi-Fi Alliance's standard for wireless streaming of video, and its addition to Jelly Bean made us very excited -- Android finally has a response to AirPlay. Imagine our disappointment, then, upon learning that Miracast isn't supported in the Nexus 10, at least not yet. It is there in the Nexus 4, a perplexing state of affairs that Google wasn't able to give us much clarity on, but it does appear that this is not a hardware limitation, since all the communication takes place over WiFi. If Miracast isn't going to be software-enabled in every Android 4.2 device then we're struggling to see how it's actually part of the OS, and we're definitely feeling let down about its potential to improve the platform as a whole.

It's not like the nexus 10 ships with 4.1.2. It comes with 4.2 but yet miracast is disabled?! But he's wrong about pointing out wifi as the potential hardware limitation. Everything has wifi (and could potentially support wifi direct as that is done in software) the hardware barrier is hardware encoding. Does anyone know the details of the chipset the nexus 10 has?
Interesting... Cnet review says it is supported, but they didn't have a dongle to test it.
I believe even the Verge/Google video said it is supported, but again, I can't check that either at the moment. Why is YouTube down when you need it the most?
Does anyone know if Miracast supports audio only? I know that it supports audio and video, but what happens if I want to connect it to my AV receiver and use it for audio only?
Edit: YouTube works again. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z92fwFQntG8 at 56:30 they say that both devices have HDMI and Miracast.
I think the software in review devices wasn't final. Some N10 review devices didn't have user accounts either, but the final software clearly will have that, so I believe its the same case with Miracast.

That's what I want to do, but is it possible? Does the Netgear ptv3000 work if it's not connected to TV?
It is possible that it doesn't allow connections from android device if its not connected to TV. For example Nexus Q doesn't allow streaming YouTube to it if its not connected to TV.
I'm thinking it should bypass through the a/v receiver but I am simply speculating... it's going to be one of those things we will have to test with or a/v systems
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
I would buy and test it but I can't I can't find this product in any shop in Europe. And US shops that have it in stock don't ship to Europe.
I'm in the u.s. and I will buy it once the 4.2 update and miracast are official for the N7. Then, I will report back with my findings on how the netgear miracast box interacts with my a/v receiver.
I'm so pumped for this feature!

I never thought about audio only. One thing I hope is possible is to turn off the n7's screen but still stream. It's one thing if you are interacting with it, but say you are streaming a movie, why have the n7's screen on for 2 hrs? Or even a game where you are using a gamepad and you aren't touching the device at all.
I've wondered if that functionality is in the spec, but I doubt. The other thing I wonder about is how low the latency is for gaming.
I found a US store that has it in stock and ships internationally. Only bad news is that shipping costs more then the device :| I'm not sure I want to pay that much for it.
About games, I have no idea if the screen can be off when streaming, but I hope so. One interesting thing that was discussed in Google developers hangout was a api that let's app developers use the two screens (tablet and connected display) as separate displays. For example the game runs on TV while your android device has buttons or whatever else on display.
I been thinking about getting the new Nexus7 with cellular and use it like a phone with a Bt headset. I figure this should be entirely possible from a software standpoint, or did google place some limitations to prevent this?
The obvious reason is the bigger screen, though I know the S4 on the N4 beats the crap of the Tegra3 on the N7, and theres also the problem of no back camera, but screen real state is a big deal for me.
At the same time carrying a tablet even a small one is not the same than a phone, and thats a con
The other big plus of the N7 is that with cellular it has 32GB while the N4 for the same price is a paltry 8GB.
I have the 8Gb version that I use as a phone with Google voice. I only do it when I'm in the house though. I really couldn't see using it in public. My intent was to get the Note 2, but since it wasn't released for AT&T when I had hoped i opted for an S3 and the N7.
What you mean "in public "? You wouldn't put it against your ear, that what the bt headset is for
I thought of doing this, but...
- There's no guarantee that the radio modem in that N7 version will support voice/SMS. It may be data only. We need to wait and see...
- In general, using a 7" as your sole device (instead of 7" + phone) seems to fall down if you want the latest hardware specs in your phone, e.g: BT 4.0, GPS with WAAS/EGNOS & GLONASS, proper camera (as you say), barometer, etc.
It's a nice idea though; I wish Google did a 7" with the same hardware specs as a top-end phone, then I'd happily use the 7" for everything, and dump the phone.

Thats what worries me, being stuck with a data-only tablet. And I'm short on cash right now so I cant simply get both.
Still the N7 has a tegra3, thats hardly obsolete and afaik it has GPS and BT4 so for its good enough.
And I too wish google did that, it would be awesome, but tbh the nexus lineup is already pretty cool, I mean look at what other companies are charging for total crap phones and tablets
I didn't really mean obsolete, more that it's just missing some nice features. But for the price, it's amazing, no question.
Yup, the N7 has GPS, but I don't think it has GLONASS; not sure about WAAS/EGNOS.
And I read that it has BT 3.0, not BT 4.0.
amusing, I have one here, but it's a present for someone else so I've not played with it... yet
You're right its 3.0, bummer
It has a compass but I couldn't find anything about the other stuff.

Finally got around to checking:
No barometer/pressure sensor.
No WAAS/EGNOS (mind you, does any Android phone support this? I've never had one that did).
No GLONASS
So, as I have eluded to in the tittle, could Android Wear run on a MotoACTV, theoretically?
For those who don't know, the background of the MotoACTV is that it runs GingerBread 2.3.4, has Bluetooth LE, WiFi, 256MB RAM, etc... (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motoactv for more info).
From my admittedly superficial look into Android Wear, I am assuming that the only hurdle here would be getting 4.4.2 or above running on the hardware?
im really excited about it hope motoactv receive a port of this os, altough i think it will not happen,
it will run on a 3.4 kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=51260100&postcount=1
no chances for our small beast

on the other hand in the post i mencioned it says "<d:gl-version>2.0</d:gl-version>" if it is what i this it is (http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/graphics/opengl.html) maybe android 2.2 is the minimum version API level 8.
fingers crossed

there s nothing yet about minimum requirement of AndroidWear it s on KK 4.4.2 and min API is 18 (JB 4.3)
there should be hack method for motoACTV to install custom rom on it

Keeping my fingers crossed... would love to see some more options for this watch.
This would definitely be possible but whether anyone will invest the required time to do it or not is another question. The hardware in the MotoActv will be powerful enough to run Android Wear but without quite extensive work a lot of it wouldn't be compatible. I am aiming to bridge the gap in the meantime as I plan to work on a project to build a ROM with an Android Wear style experience (hopefully with ports of some of the actual Android Wear applications) on top the already functional Android Gingerbread base that we have.
I won't be able to start this properly for at least a month but I have ported the bootanimation from the LG G Watch system dump that was just leaked to help bring a very small part of the look and feel to the MotoACTV. See here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=53150797
I have a motoactv as well and am taking great interest in seeing android wear brought to it, even if its just for me till all options are out (moto360, asus, etc) if no one wants to try to make it I guess I can try but I have no previous rom making skills, if anyone is interested in helping me figure this out please do so we can get this going!
i too will participate in testing - this would be awesome! the motoactv should have been what all these smart watches build off of. i wish the new smartwatches had standalone GPS.

P.S. Any suggestions to solve the Motoactv.com sudden death? Where to save our workouts?
I have a Motoactv and would be willing to participate also, but why would you really want to use it with the Motoactv?
I was pretty sure Wear was pretty highly dependent on the microphone for Google now. In theory you could use a Bluetooth headset, but Google now was meant to use your phone with Bluetooth, and obviously you can only have one device connected at a time.
On a philosophical level, what I like about my Motoactv compared to modern smartwatches with Wear is that I'm free to use whatever app on the Play Store I feel like using no matter how sadistic, for better or for worse
Not completely tangential, but has anyone read Ron Amadeo's review of the Moto360 on Ars?
http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2014/09/moto-360-review-beautiful-outside-ugly-inside/
TL;DR - It's got an old processor that drags it down. (1GHz TI OMAP 3) and drains the battery quickly.
Doesn't the MotoActv have the same class of chip? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2170917
Could it be the same one, just overclocked? Would this help in getting Wear onto the Actv?

Yes it does seem that the internals are based on the MotoACTV (likely to bring the cost down) which sort of makes sense because they did say at one point that it was their reference platform for the 360 during development. They both use OMAP 3 chips, clocked at 600MHz in the MotoACTV and 1GHz in the Moto 360. This would indeed potentially make it easier to port Android Wear to the MotoACTV.
The thing is though, as @m33rkat pointed out above, the MotoACV lacks a microphone and so it would not actually necessarily be all that great with Android Wear as it is quite largely driven by voice commands. It would also mean loosing access to many of the sports features we have now such as the Motoactv.com sync, activity profiles and use of ANT+ sensors.
I think the MotoACTV might be better used as it is with Motorola's fitness software. I also wish Moto had used a newer chip in the 360 such as the Snapdragon 400 because the OMAP 3 is pretty damn old!

I think this may be more interesting once the next version of android wear is released. The GPS and offline music playback support would be better suited for the MOTOACTV since it contains GPS and the storage capacity to allow offline music. Can you overclock the processor in the motoactv? I wouldn't be surprised if android wear can run at a slower clock speed. I could imagine using the headphones (wired/bluetooth) to control the OS while running. Sucks there'd be no vibrations.
