Split screen display - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've noticed larger Android tablets have a split display for things like settings, where there's a vertically scrolling menu or options on the left side and the settings for that option on the right (like with iPads).
The N7 doesn't do this by default. If I go into settings I just get a list of options and tapping one gets me a full page of actual settings for the selected option.
Is there an easy trick/utility to get the split screen display?

[SOLVED]Can't scroll in Excel Mobile

I've done a search in both the Leo forums as well as xda in general and can't see a solution for my problem:
I am unable to scroll within excel mobile. Whenever I drag my finger across the screen it selects cells rather than scrolling. This isn't a problem if I wish to move up and down as the vertical scroll bar is visible and can be used. However, the horizontal scroll bar doesn't display even though it is selected in the menu.
Can anyone suggest what I can do to fix this? Thanks in advance.
bump
can anyone help?
When you open Excel, click on the right side of the screen (= scroll bar) and the scroll-button will appear. Use that to scroll up and down. The same goes for the horizontal scroll bar (well, it's on the bottom of the Excel screen and you scroll from left to right ;-)). Should be there, otherwise I wouldn't know.
Thanks for the reply but unfortunately the horizontal scroll bar isn't visible on the screen, even though when I go into view -> show the horizontal scroll bar checkbox is ticked.
The vertical scroll bar also works like a "normal" scroll bar in that the scrolling part is always the same size; it doesn't increase in size when the scroll bar is tapped on. However, I seem to remember that's how it used to work when I first got the phone, so perhaps in all the various tweaks and things I've done since I've unwittingly edited something that is affecting it?!
Oh well.
You're not in full screen mode are you?
And have you tried opening a new document?
No not in full screen mode, and I have opened various different (existing) spreadsheets, and tried creating a new one and the same thing happens in all of them.
I've solved the problem. A little look into HD2Tweak and I spotted an option for horizontal scroll bar which was set to none. I changed it to normal and a quick soft reset later and I was able to see the horizontal scroll bar again; not just in Excel but other apps too.
I don't remember switching it to none, but am just glad it's working again now!

2 Browser Questions (option setting or root tweak?)

First of all, I love my phone and I love the stock Android browser.
With that said, I see two ways the browser could be slightly improved.
I often find myself managing multiple tabs in the browser (4-6 at any given time). I find that when I go to my open tabs (Menu > Windows), it's very hard to tell which one is the active tab. I think they're listed in the order in which they're opened, but that doesn't help me when I constantly jump back and forth between them. There's no indication which tab is active, and the fact that the font is so large and you have a truncated URL and page title makes it difficult to tell what's what.
Is there an option or tweak that allows the active tab to be bolded/colored differently, font size to be reduced, display to be thumbnailed rather than listed, or to arrange the tabs in a different way (ie; last viewed on top rather than first viewed)?
My second question has to do with locking the orientation of the browser to either portrait or landscape. This would be useful if I'm laying in bed on my side reading webpages. I'd want the orientation to "stick" to portrait so that I'm reading like normal rather than have the browser switch to landscape and have to angle my phone so that the accelerometer switches back and stays on portrait.
Is there an option or tweak to force the browser to "stick" to either portrait or landscape mode for a given period of time?
Browser > More > Settings and check Landscape-only display.
Not sure about the other question though.

Hmm, what I actually need it to do is lock into portrait mode, not landscape.
You should check out Dolphin Browser HD. Tabbed browsing, orirntation settings, add ons, tons more. Just search for it in the market.

Here is a screenshot if how it looks. The tabs at the top can be scrolled to the left or right if you have a few.

HTC did a much better job at tweaking the browser in Android than Samsung. (myTouch slide is my other phone).

I agree to an extent, feels choppy when you choose a window on the slide though, and you're stuck with 3 tabs Max on it, I actually like HTC sense more than espresso.

Solution: An app called "AutoRotate Switch."
Works flawlessly! Tapping the icon toggles between locked and unlocked orientations. Amazing.
I read about it here: http://lifehacker.com/5621959/autorotate-switch-toggles-screen-rotation-on-your-android-phone
Still in search of a solution to problem #1 which was:
Is there an option or tweak that allows the active browser tab to be bolded/colored differently, font size in tab overview page to be reduced, display of thumbnail overview page to be thumbnailed rather than listed, or to arrange the tabs in a different way (ie; last viewed on top rather than first viewed)?

Getting rid of mobileview in stockbrowser?

Hi everyone,
i think thread title says it all...
I already hated this stupid mobile view of websites in my Android smartphone.
Now it sucks even more on my tablet. i want to see webpages in desktop view style. I have found no way to change that in the stock browser.
Only in the Dolphin HD browser I an choose wether I want mobile or desktop views of website. And it even works. But actually I would prefer the stock browser.
Thank you.

Try This:
1. Open the Android Honeycomb browser on your tablet.
2. In the address bar, type: about:debug and press enter (it will appear that nothing changed).
3. Now open the browser's settings by tapping the icon in the very top-right corner of your screen (it looks like four horizontal lines) and selecting "Settings" from the drop-down menu that appears.
4. On the left side of the screen, tap the section labeled "Debug."
5. On the right side of the screen, tap the item labeled "UAString," then select "Desktop."
6. Press the back button (in the very bottom-left corner of your screen) to exit the browser's settings.
7. In the browser's address bar, type: about:debug once more; this will disable debugging mode and return the browser to its normal state.
That should make it load the "desktop" versions of websites for you!
any chance of getting this change to stick? It seems that I have to change this every time I start the browser.

You change this once and then the change wil persist
only sticks until you reboot, kind of annoying wish someone could write a script or something to automate this.
Sorry but either will lose setting periodically for no apparent reason. Absolutely needs to be automated.
i would love this too..

SPEN request in "Air view" setting

I really like one aspect of the "Air View" setting in the SPEN settings and I really hate the other aspect. The one aspect I like shows the circle where you are hovering. The aspect I dont like is that if you are hovering at the bottom (or top) of the screen it scrolls rapidly down the page. Anyone have an idea where I can keep the circle showing at all times but eliminate the fast scroll that also comes with Air view?
Thanks so much
On S Pen setting, click on air view (just to the left of the on/off switch), and you can change some setting, including scroll
Thanks a million spidermoon!!! How the heck did you figure that one out!

The majority of samsung's options with an on-off switch have further settings you can get into by tapping on the option itself. Setting your own lockscreen shortcuts is pretty useful.

Blank Screen on certain apps and blocked bottom of screen of some others

Using AT&T 950. Some of the apps go blank on some screens. Others are blocked out at the bottom of the screen by the navigation bar.
For example:
Ebay app - when I click on the search icon, the screen goes blank, but I still see the keyboard and top info bar. It will allow me to type and when I click enter, the search does come up. I can't see what s being typed, but do see the results.
Navigon - When I go to the map manager, the screen goes black again. (except for the top and bottom menu bars). If I rotate the phone to landscape and then back to portrait, it then shows up.
Podcasts - when on the Collection screen, the Download text is half covered up at the bottom with the bottom menu bar.
There's more but I think this gives a good representation. I was running the latest standard release. I did update using Windows Preview for Developers didn't fix it. Thanks in advance.
