[Off topic] Opinion Poll - Atrix 4G General

Since I began working on devices I've began treating everything I do under the banner of a small company I'm forming as ZombiDev. The general consensus then was to not name my company that and simply continue as SamCripp.
So after a year or so of ZombiDev ROM Factory releases I think I am finally willing to give it another try rolling it as SamCripp.
So simply to see what you guys think as consumers. Here is my current landing page for ZombiDev
http://zombidev.info
Here is what would be the new home, depending what you guys think.
http://samcripp.com
Thighs ideas or arguments in pro or con are welcome. Thanks for you guyses input.

i like the 8 bit logo!
marketing.. when i see over the top presentations with lots of colors boasting "OMG so and so dev team presents, in association with..., an xda developers premier release" i generally associate that with amateurism. dont get me wrong, i still read the details and if its good its good but its a put off for me because it feels tactless. marketing is important but dont over sell it with flashiness. let the details sell it.
ive seen the name samcripp and your distinct avatar many times and coupled with the way you present yourself i associate that brand with professionalism. if ive seen zombiedev i probably ignored it because of what i said above and looked at the dev names and not the presentation.
tho im a hard target and a hard critic. obviously flashy presentations work on most people. i duno, just some stuff to consider =)

I know you as both, but more so as SamCripp. Personally I think that name just has a better ring to it. I will be following your work either way. At the end of the day, what do YOU prefer?
With marketing I believe you would be better with a wee bit of flash. You have a following from the forums, so for many if us this doesn't matter, but people who don't know your work will be initially attracted to some gloss, from where they too can get to know your work. Also depends on your target market. I know one person with a new RAZR MAXX who doesn't even know what the Play Store is. Other people like yourself dig deep, and folks like me are spread in between.

I pretty much agree with CaelanT. I don't know anything about marketing, but I think people could better relate to SamCripp than ZombiDev. People can also easily find your work as SamCripp.
Conceptually, I like the SamCripp site, but it gives me a headache. Kinda like playing NES for too many hours.
The ZombiDev site looks cool and is much easier on the eyes.
The main problem I have with both websites is that I don't see "the face".
I'll follow you either way.
Edit:
Your profile pic ("the face") would make a great background image or watermark for a website.
Also, you could add a poll to the post.

ZombiDev !!!

I think it all comes down to this - your work is your biggest asset and has big potential and is able to promote easily. You just have to decide which do you want to promote, yourself as an individual or your company as a "team" (even if you're the only one working there, lol).
As for the users... Eh, people generally don't like change (unlesa they decide for it I guess), but even if you decide to change everything to your company, I believe your work is so potent it wouldn't take long before users (both new and old) catch up and get used to it.
As for the sites... To be honest, I don't really like either of them. Sorry! I think the pixelated art on your personal page is cute, but both sites look like an angry fruit salad to me, and the company site is IMO not how a company site should look like (unless it's some joke company or something). I for one would probably never guess it's a company site, I'd think it's just another personal site, put together in someone's back yard. Either that or it's some hippie or steampunk company, lol.

Lol the company site is meant to look like a cheap bar metal show. A company doesn't have to always look professional.

Upgrading our android market and games for good

Hi guys
I'be been downloading tons of apps since I got my HTC evo last month, and what I see on the market place is pretty much the same thing every day... there is not much new stuff that can really catch your eyes. The only thing that may do are the sexual wallpaper apps that kids can get access to easily. In my point of view, those kind of apps should be removed from the market.
Talking about game apps in the market, most of them have crappy graphics and the ones that have good or great graphics are the ones brought from the Apple app store.
I would like to tell you guys who develop games to really put all your effort and come up with kicking ass games with graphics that would pop out our eyes because that's what people like me are looking for and are willing to pay for.
It's not cool to have outstanding phones capable of pretty much everything and running apps with crappy graphics and stupid sexual apps that can ruin our children's life and even the great image of Android.

Thank you for that astounding vision. Your cutting insight will hopefully make Android (and the world) a better place.
While you're at it, are you taking applications for your new communist state?
On a more serious note, if a policed marketplace and fluffy flashy games are your preference over functional but Spartan apps, perhaps you bought the wrong phone. The Jesus phone is what you describe.
Personally I wouldn't feel comfortable placing my kids on the internet without some sort of firewall to buffer. A good parent wouldn't trust a corporation to do his/her own job. I wouldn't trust even the holy Job's judgement as even he sometimes lapses, not to mention that apps are not the only way that Satan may spread his seed.

So much for a constructive dialogue, you guys take 1 of his 4 paragraphs and flame him for it, nice.
To each to his own on the sexual stuff in the market. Anyhow, what you are saying has been discussed quite a bit on this site and a lot of it comes down to a couple key pieces.
To sum it up:
1. IPhone has a standard arch that hasn't changed all that drastically which allows developers to code for one type of phone instead of several like on Android. It is more or so tweak s between IOS versions that overhaul like between an incredible vs a evo vs a Droid x.
2. Bigger end user community on iPhone.
3. More money developing for iphone than Android.
We are getting more apps and developers as we get more Android phones out on the market but it will still take time before we have a market place that has the quality of games and apps that iphone has but I am looking forward to it. I also signed up for the Android developer tool yesterday so that should be cool.

Am I missing something? Also I didn't flame, just provided a sarcastic counterpoint and even honest advice for OP. If fancy graphics and sex-free market place are important to you, then right now, iPhone is clearly the place to be.
As far as graphics go: It's pretty clear to me that the difference in games is due to marketing. Apple hyped their phone, did a great job marketing, and as such they got big attention from developers like EA. You get a big market, of course EA is going to want to make games for you. And of course, EA is going to have the manpower / resources necessary to make big full feature graphical games. I guarantee you EA and other companies making graphical masterpieces will come to Android as Android Market sales expand.

This is correct.
Currently the Android market is the only app store that has a refund policy. webOS, OVI store, BB store, and app store do not have one. So at least we have one at all, gives us an advantage. Reading that article from Appleinsider does not surprise me, they have been criticized for bad articles for a long time. Apple fanboys seem to be the worst of all the platform fanboys.
While the app store is a much better experience in my opinion, I don't understand why they boast that you can download apps up to 2GB in size on a device that has no expandable memory option?

The EVO has something like 300 MB of internal free space for apps. Froyo's move to SD feature doesn't move the entire app to the SD, just non essential, storage type of app data. So even if you have a 32 GB SD card, you'll still eventually be hosed by the limited internal memory. You could root and modify to completely move the apps to the SD card but it's not perfect and it only benefits the 1% of users who know about rooting.
The iPhone on the other hand has a 32GB version without that limitation.
True, it does contain facts. Unfortunately, they are buried deeply under all of the overly opinionated bs. I mean, they are pretty much saying that its a nice little facelift and all, but the app store will always be better because its made by Apple, and we all know that anything Apple makes must be the best thing ever, assuming you're holding it right of course.
Sent from my Evo 4G using the Badass XDA app of Awesomeness
Yeah most articles contain facts, somewhere, that doesn't make the obvious bias acceptable by any means.
And they neglect to mention the fact that, without root, you are free to download to, and install apps straight from, your computer...thus bypassing many of the complaints in the article.
How anyone can criticize Android for being "fragmented" then ignore that apple has taken the easy way out convincing a nearly blind mass that one device is "the best" and that it's not bizarre for everyone to carry around the exact same phone.. is beyond me.
Who knows, maybe apple isn't the only company trying to take over the world, but at least Google is giving anyone a shot at helping shape the Android experience.
Dear God, I really don't know how these people even walk around. Doesn't it physically hurt to be that much of a pretentious ass?
Mini-rant -
Almost every Android user can admit that the iPhone is pretty cool and has some neat features, while enjoying their own flavor of Android phone. However, I have only met ONE iPhone owner who has ever strayed from the path that Steve Jobs laid down for them and admitted that Android has it's own merits and advantages over iOS.
It's frustrating trying to have an intelligent conversation with an indoctrinated brick wall about the differences and awesomeness of both phones.
Good comedy on a slow morning. More facts were omitted than mentioned. Apple's invisible acceptance criteria for their own apps was totally ignored. Your app needs to benefit the future pov to be accepted. Can't blame him, the gui battle was painful.
Back on topic, it seems that itunes is the future hinge pin for apples' added capability. It offers an umbrella for moving content. So e-books and data and executables are all mac cloud by itunes.
So in as much as I have the utmost respect for apple, small minded blogs are really quite funny and indicate where the blind spots are.
Many years ago I learned to never discuss your competition unless they were a real threat and you were trying to divert attention away from your shortcomings by pointing out theirs.
We should consider it a compliment that a self proclaimed high end @pple resource found the need to dedicate time and bandwidth to defend their product by attacking ours.
And since Tom Tom was mentioned, who needs to buy a nav program for their phones these days? Oh, that's right, iPhone users do! Falling behind there, aren't they? I'll use my free nav and if I need something with on board maps,? I'll buy a whole PNA for around the price of the app. Apple has fallen far behind Android in navigation. I don't know how they can possibly catch up.
See how that works?
The problem with big games on the Android side is that there's been no equivalent to the iPod Touch and for the last 7 months, the dPad . The limited battery life off a modern smartphone still make it a relatively poor high power gaming platform. I bet without the Touch (and to a small part dPad), John Carmack wouldn't be talking favorably about the iPhone either. With the avalanche of tablets about to overtake us, that whole landscape may change. Meanwhile, we always have the Apple marketing created FUD that spews from their fanboi network to enjoy.

http://www.goodandevo.net/2010/09/hd-music-video-shot-with-htc-evo-4g.html[/URL]
I personally can say from expierence when I was looking for a new phone the two phones I had in mind was the HTC EVO and the Iphone4 . I looked over both providers (Sprint vs AT&T) and compared prices and such . At the start of it all both phones were neck and neck for me . Then the Apple antenna issue popped up , I stepped back and watched how Apple would handle the situation , still keeping the HTC EVO in the back of my mind . After watching Steve Jobs talk about how users were holding thier phones wrong and how it was actually AT&T's fault due to their network it became a total finger pointing fight . Mean while the HTC EVO was still sitting there in my mind with very few issues besides a issue with battery life . After doing more research I found the Iphone also suffered from battery life issues itself . Months prior to its release the iphone was said to be having a removable battery , that feature never came to be when it was released . Long story short , Apple changing the removable battery idea and the Steve Jobs blow out It pretty much pointed me straight to Sprint and the HTC EVO . Ever since then I have never been happier , but I still see videos of apple owners who litterally look like zombies when talking about apple products . Hell the woman who activated my phone at Bestbuy had a iphone 3G and her words were "The iphone4 is awesome I must have it , Im going to get one" . Granted the statement alone wasnt funny but the fact he eyes litterally buldged out and glazed over was the killer part .To add further insult to injury , there was a small crowd of Iphone4 owners there was well when I got mine . I over heard comments like this "Ohh you wont drop calls if you hold it like this." "No you are holding it wrong hold it like this" . I was littlerally besides myself laughing my ass off listening to the whole conversation . Apple owners might consider us Android owners lower than them , but I can say this much Id much rather be with the lower crowd then in that crowd ROFL

Just like Apple intended!

Which tablet is right for me?

I know most of the people here will favor android, but I have also posted this on an apple forum. Im looking for overall opinions.
I am looking at the Xoom wifi, iPad32gb wifi, and Galaxytab 10.1 (new one)
Here is my background and what I am looking for, any insight you may have will be greatly appreciated.
I have an iPod Touch, I have never used android. I have played with xoom and iPad extensively at bestbuy for a couple days.
I am in the military and will be shipping to Ft Gordon for about 7 months this june. I would like to get a tablet that will be easier to use and easier to maintain than a laptop.
Some of the things I am looking for is
Size/weight
speed, (I saw xoom can overclock, very impressive)
Usability
Apps
Facebook
Music
Video Chat with family members at home (Desktop PCs)
Email
Web
Also. The size and weight is important. Which is making me want to wait for the Galaxy Tab 10.1, as it has the dimensions of an ipad2, but the power of honeycomb.
The only problem with that, is it comes out june 8th, I ship jun 16th. I fear I will not have enough time to get it setup the way I like before I leave.
Anyway, im rambling, If you have any insight on what I should do in my situation. Please post your thoughts.
~Scott
Why do we have so many thread around "is this right for me"? Can I tell you that you should drive BWM and not Lexus because it is right for you? Or you should eat McD and not Carls Jr because it is right for you? Shouldn't you determine what is right for you?
The best way is knowing what you need and go out and test it out. That is why we have retail stores.
I have played with both, and am still undecided. I am looking for someone who has used both more than I have and has a general opinion.
If videochat is one of the requirements then I would recommend going with the Xoom. The 2mp camera and video gchat and other third party apps are much easier to use with Desktops than the facetime clients.
Gee, I wonder which one people on a xoom forum will ask you to get.
Ask on an Apple forum or a Samsung forum and see what answers you get.
This thread is pointless and if you searched even once you would have found 10 or more threads about this.

Wow, short fuse
Hello, I've tinkered extensively with both the ipad and Xoom. Here are my thoughts on those categories (btw I'm majory Android biased but I'm going to try and step away from that and be as honest as I can)
Size/weight - Definitely iPad, they make very sleek and weightless products
speed, (I saw xoom can overclock, very impressive) - xoom can overclock and that makes it freaking quick but out of the box, they are both very fast. I will say that Apple has an uncanny ability to make very polished products. But the Xoom is very close if not the same.
Usability - Xoom all the way, I just think you have so many more options and such a variety with widgets. Like I said, I'm an android fan but I am one because I love using it more than apple products (very limited and constrained, I just don't feel like I can do as much on them)
Apps - Apple wins but Android has equality where it counts. One note is that many many Android apps are free where as most of the Apple apps are costly. But Apple does have a lot of apps, and good ones!
Facebook - Same except for playing flash games on the Xoom. Heck, I play Rummikub on my Evo 4g in bed with my wife before we go to sleep. It's not polished and perfect, but I can do it with enjoyment.
Music - iPad has iTunes which works very well, if you prefer that. I love android because I can take my mp3 files from my comp, drag them on to the root of my android, and then listen to those files. Nothing beats that for me, and btw my first mp3 player was an iPod back before they were color and I abhorred having to sync with iTunes just to get music on my mp3 player, and the from there not be able to share that music.
Video Chat with family members at home (Desktop PCs) Google video chat seems easier to use with family members because it works with anyone with a web browser (a PC web browser) but I don't have a lot of experience in this matter so don't weigh an opinion on this.
Email - I love gmail and I feel this would be better on the Xoom
Web - Tabbed browsing, speed, and flash make me really like the Xoom.
Hope it helps
Davy
ON you tube there are a few comparison between ipad 2 and Xoom and ipad 1 on each category from size, screen, and usage.
hmmm let me see what tablet would help you out?

My Evo currently runs a Sense 3.0 rom, and even though the battery live is pretty lacking (even on extended battery!), I have had the fortunate opportunity to experience what the Evo 3D is going to be like, which changed my mind from keeping the Evo to pre-ordering the 3D, even before I know when the thing actually drops!

There are negatives you're ignoring. How about the fact that some of those leaks have lead to phones bricking?

I doubt they're worried about that, I'm sure they would be glad to brick a few phones through here as long as they catch it before it gets pushed out OTA. The whole having thousands upon thousands of people protesting and harassing you over a leaked ROM though. You already know it got the CEOs attention, and you can bet he's wanting to know why and how it happened.

couple things you might want to consider here:
the percentage of people that get excited about ROM leaks is a very very small part of their user base.
and like matty mentioned, an unfinished code leak with possible very serious bugs does nothing to further their cause, or improve the final product. especially when they are used as ports.
in relation to this, and furthermore, I think it is a great mistake to undervalue and diminish the talents and efforts of the people writing the original source code for these ROMs by calling the work "crappy".
without any insult intended to anyones work here, less than half of the devs here are actually "writing" any code, or improving on the work of the original source writers on a base functional level. debatable, some are, but most are not. with a few exceptions, almost all of the fully functional (imho), awesome (imho) ROMs are based on finished work done by those same original coders.
when a leak drops for the Evo, if it has serious bugs, those bugs most often stay until a gold drops.
(haha, just my two cents. im fulla ****)
all that being said, I am saddened to see a great resource disappear.
What I fail to understand is why people STILL underestimate the power of the "small userbase" that you all seem to well, underestimate?
I said it once and I will say it again, we are the people who show off the stuff these upcoming phones can do by showing people the latest leak that got ported to our phones.
Not one person on this site can say they didn't have some sort of influence on the purchase of someone they know. I find that one hard to believe. and these companies know it. That's why they often do things like sale phones with unlocked bootloaders and such.
Govt. must be crackin down.. a few of the other bootlegger sites I tried to frequent this weekend were shutdown.

Is Apple Better?

You tell me...

I gave credit to the Samsung Galaxy line.

smart.
The brand itself made the iphone successful..
I recommend iphone too to those whoever looking to get a smartphone, especially the ones I think are not really OS/smartphone enthusiasts..
Both android and iphone are great OS'.. It's just much simpler and refined iOS is compared to android.. I think the Galaxy s2 made it right out of all the android smartphones out there..
Thanks to its great specs and incorporation into the OS..
And also... We keep on waiting for the next iteration of android to work right.. We said that about gingerbread then honeycomb.. Lol.. Is honeycomb not that good either?
ios and android are just 2 sides of the same coin.
Android gives the user a more advanced and easily customizable interface as well as open source, minus side is stability and hardware/software compatibilty.
IOS gives you the security of a rock solid stable OS with the comfort of knowing your OS is built around your hardware, thus no incompatibility or unsupported features. downside is closed OS no source info apple controlled market and complete lack of customization.
Android = Mobile Technology Enthusiast
IOS = Business savy person, or parent, people who need to be 100% certain everything works 24/7 (or trend hopping teen)
i have an ipod touch, a galaxy S, I love both
I have an Imac and a self built windows 7 gaming rig, I love both
Mind you these are my opinions and as such yours may differ.
as a person who loves the best of both worlds i use Miui with the Vexillium Project icon set, this gives an iphonish polish and feel with the customization of android that i have grown to love.
Android is more for the tech savvy people, while apple is for people that don't really know much, with the iphone though, you don't get leaks, either your phone is supported, or its old and will forsure never get updates (apple).

I think it was best said by the first comment left (by Marcelo) on your article. Marketing! They make it look so pretty, so gleaming ,so slick, so simple to use. Kids want it, teens want it, Moms and Dads want it. Marketing! Its the one luxury that its in reach of the average American. Can't have a Mercedes like that guy, can't have a mansion like that guy , but hey he has an iPhone WTF I could get that! Marketing! We are a nation of consumers who are told what we want via a TV/Internet commercial. Marketing!

...j/k I don't live with my Momma but my wife tries to be.
One area where apple has a big advantage is how easy it is to change themes or customize iphones. My buddy at work has an iphone 4 and it jail broke. Thru cydia he installed something call a dream board (or something like that). Thru that he can go from theme to them within a few seconds and there are zero issues. Also its super easy to change signal, wifi icons etc... Now us android usuers know what a pain it is to change almost anything on your phone. Finding something compatible with your rom, make a back up, flash, reboot, cross fingers , say a prayer and hope everything works like it should.

Should I post ALL of the (what i consider pointless) threads that you have created?
How many times have I helped you?
My site has no ads and I receive no income.. I am, like always, just trying to help.
I swear XDA runs people away. I've already moved all of my guides to RootzWiki... and I am extremely close from removing myself because of comments like this.
Forgive me for linking to my blog, rather than copying/pasting the entire article.
And yes, I did try and interest people with the Title.. the title is the article's title. Shock Face.

I agree.. Marcelo had an amazing comment. So well in fact he has already written an article for the blog... can't wait to post it... I suppose I will not post it here since some people get offended by it.

You can post it here. I enjoyed the article. It's different if your purpose was to sell something, but even if you had ads, it's not against the rules.
As for the topic:
My wife's sister is an apple iPhone convert to Android with the Galaxy S Vibrant. Observing her everyday dealing with the phone would come to the conclusion that the iPhone is just simpler. She had her iPhone before I met her, so I didn't get to see her initial learning curve into the smartphone arena. She often complained about the Galaxy's constant crashing, slowness, and terrible battery life. (She's the type of person who only charges once every three days). A custom ROM did not make things better, and shouldn't have to as she put it. She loves the Market and all of the nifty apps that she can download. She uses that often. She didn't have many apps on her iPhone.
It makes you think. I've found that a lot of features that I used apps for previously are built right in to the MIUI ROM and negates the use of an external app. I believe that a lot of features should be implemented into the OS, and should not require an external app, or custom ROM to access it. This is something that needs improvement. To me, an intuitive UI isn't only about being pretty, but being complete in the sense that I don't have to customize it in order for it to be fully functional.
iOS has superior apps, a superior user interface, a more battery-friendly design and superior media ecosystem (iTunes Store, etc.).
Even where the same apps exist, the iOS version is most often better.
Also, the build quality of the iPhone is superior to practically every Android device on the market. The only other smartphone I've owned that came close was the HD2 (boy has HTC gone down the ****ter since then?).
I simply can't deal with it because a 3.5" screen isn't enough for me. I need 4" at least on the screen. Anything less is not usable to me as a daily driver.

That's because it is pretty, gleaming, slick, and simple to use.
It's not marketing. Go to an AT&T or Verizon store and look at it.
It's so good, that even Samsung tried their damnest to copy the Look and Feel of it, and Android even borrowed many UI elements from iOS.
Lots of people got Vibrants preciecely because it was a 3GS look-alike with Android on it (skinned to look like iOS) and they didn't want to get AT&T's service to get an iPhone.

That's true to an extent. But not every android phone can run GB. So that's not an option for everyone. Plus apple os is pretty slick right out of the box. No need for custom roms.
Bi-winning V3
In terms of build quality yes and in terms of efficiency their iOS is efficient but there phone is a nightmare for people with big hands which is why I generally see more women own iPhones and more guys own android phones
While this is all true i think google knows this an thats where ice cream sandwich comes in cant wait an gonna be open source so that mean CM8 unlike honeycomb
